Tips on how to get busted when smoking pot
On Saturday I came in to read police reports. I don’t normally do that on a Saturday, but I’m way behind and was out of town so, given the lousy weather, I decided to come in and catch up.
Here’s what I came away with:
A lot of people smoke pot. Yep, as if this is a surprise, it’s in fact true. Here’s a list of facts:
A lot of people smoke pot. We established that.
A lot of people smoke pot when other stuff happens.
Examples of “other stuff happens”:
- Domestic violence or other arguments where someone calls the police.
- Loud parties.
- Loud parties where the upstairs neighbors call the cops about the smell.
A lot of people smoke pot in their cars. (None of them get speeding tickets.) They do get tickets for the following:
- Driving too slow
- Driving with improper lane usage—later contributed to the driver trying to open the Twinkies wrapper.
- Driving with improper lane usage—later contributed to intense head-banging to the CD.
- Getting lost.
- Getting lost again.
The reason we know that a lot of people smoke pot in the car is mostly due to the silly-stupid things they get into. First of all, don’t forget that regardless of your views, pot is illegal. That being said, when the cops pull your car over and find the ashtray full and the baggie on the console, you’re probably going to get charged with it. In some cases, the charges are left with a citation but most cases involve other things that lend the driver to a trip to jail.
We arrest a lot of people who were driving around, smoking pot, in a car with stolen tags or tags that have expired registration or no insurance. If you didn’t know, your tag says a lot about you. Insurance and any warrant info are on the tag registration. Knowing that, why smoke? The least you could do is warn the passengers that your tags are expired, you have no insurance, and your car is stolen. I’m sure they would want to know that before toking up. Talk about paranoid.
Pot is a material object. You can see it. The car is a material object and you can see that too. There is no magical invisible place inside the car. This includes the console, ashtray and under the driver’s or passenger’s seat. Once the probable cause is there, the cops are going to check further. Probable cause includes the piles of smoke that exit the window when you roll it down after being pulled over. I can tell you that in a given week, we probably have two dozen arrests in cars and apartments on small misdemeanor cases of marijuana possession because it was there to be seen.
- A man called the police and reported that his friend stole his i-Pod. The officer walked in and found the man’s pot, scale and bong on the kitchen table. Fact: Pot makes you forget to do important things — like hiding your pot.
- A man calls the police to report that his friend took his pot! No kidding.
Fact: Pot makes you think that dumb things are rational.
- A man calls the police and asks when he can pick up his pot. He was arrested for public drunkenness and had a little pot on him at the time. He wasn’t charged with the pot. Fact: Pot makes dumb people dumber.
- Several people who were in a car were arrested for underage possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana and related objects: bongs, pipes (the ceramic ones), one-hitters and several hits of Ecstasy. They were driving in one direction when they saw several cop cars with blue lights on down the road on a cross street. They turned onto the road going out of the way to see what they thought was an accident. It wasn’t an accident. It was a safety road-and-seat-belt check.
If you’re stopped and you’ve got pot on you, you might stay away from these well-worn excuses:
- The Oregano Syndrome: Oregano is commonly used as a spice for food. It’s normally contained in a metal can or plastic container. It is almost never transported in plastic baggies and never has stems in it. Oregano smells like oregano and not like pot. Chefs never travel with unmarked oregano. Oregano is plentiful and there is little need to transport it.
- “That’s Not Mine,” otherwise known as “The Guy” reason: This is the guy who was in your car and left his pot in the seat. He doesn’t have a last name and the driver was just giving the guy a ride. He doesn’t know him well.
- Astonishment Syndrome: The Astonishment Syndrome requires some acting and good luck with that — especially if you’re stoned. “I have no idea where that came from!!!!” That also might be “The Guy” who not only leaves it in your car, he plants it, too.
Look, just stay home. Life gives you enough paranoia. Why magnify it?

When you say things like “Domestic violence or other arguments where someone calls the police.” you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. No one gets stoned & beats up their girlfriend. However, lots of people get drunk & knock over a gas station or 7-11.
“Driving too slow”. Really? That’s a problem for you? What about people drinking alcohol who drive too fast? Given a choice, I know which scares me more.
Here’s a fact for you; I used to smoke every day (sometimes several times a day) for over 15 years. The only reason I quit was because Nancy Reagan decided to stick her nose in my business. I have to be able to pass a drug test or I would still toke. The fact is that I make a lot more money than the average person, using my cognitive abilities to reason out problems, and marijuana did not impair my abilities with long term use.
I am not in any way advocating for the use of harder substances. However, when you (royal usage) include marijuana in with things like crack, heroin and who knows what else, when kids try pot & figure out it’s not really bad for you, they’ll wonder what else you’re lying about to them.
Worry about heroin & cocaine and let people enjoy themselves.

As a police officer, I was conducting a roadblock. A vehicle approached and then stopped. I asked for his driver’s license. He said “sure” and handed me a lit joint as said “can you “hold this”. I said “sure”. I took the joint, then he presented his driver’s license and he was then placed under arrest.

He stated that police commonly come across pot when answering calls for domestic violence.
Example: Man beats wife. Wife calls police. Police enter house to arrest husband. Husband is sitting on couch. Pot is sitting on the coffee table.
Example: Couple have heated argument. Male breaks objects, threatens female. Female escapes to back bedroom calls police. Male storms off to couch decides to ‘light one up’ to calm himself down. Police arrive to find husband sitting on couch smoking.
Domestic violence calls are common calls that usually lead to the officers having to enter the house. Another common call would be disputes involving property… officer escorts the person seeking to get their items into the house, and what do you know? There’s a big bong loaded with weed on the kitchen table.
All stories are true because I was there.

They started out smoking pot.Then they escalated to things they stuffed up their nose,Then they injected stuff.And then they started stealing anything that wasn’t nailed down.Then they were in and out of jail.Their parents were pretty well off.Now they’re almost destitute.The men are 30 and 24 respectively.Never had a job.Never will have one.One finished high school,the other one didn’t.All of this started with innocent little weed.You know,the one that isn’t addictive and doesn’t make you do funny things.It just makes you brain dead.

Pot makes my housework enjoyable. When my significant other starts killing my buzz I lock his azz out after I send him to the store. Perfect strategy to avoid the cops coming to the house for domestic violence. If the neighbors call the police for the disturbance I will have already hidden the evidence in the attic and used all the Febreeze. His azz goes to jail and I get a vacation.

This is a stupid article, but before the next time you reefer heads do your “innocent” pot smoking read about all the people that are getting slaughtered everyday in Mexico because of the fight for US user’s drug dollars. They find bodies hanging from roadway bridges all the time. Police are murdered daily. Ditto judges. Decapitated corpses are common.
All this happens because of the drug demand up here, north of the border. Not to mention Colombia, Peru, etc. I wish you dopers would grow up.

Well, I’ll tell you one damn thing. If I wasn’t subject to drug testing, I’d be smoking me a nice bowlful every evening before bed for my fibromyalgia, neuropathy and other ills. I’ll be retired in a few short months, and then it’s ON.
And yes, there are narcotics and other meds which would work, but they’re addictive. I don’t intend to go to my grave addicted to anything. I know it works, and very well…vacations, you know.

OMFG! If weed is a gateway drug, I should be addicted to everything on Earth. I’ve never snorted anything, popped pills, injected or smoked anything except clove cigs and marijuana. There are more myths about weed than there are about big foot and people need to understand that weed is more beneficial to the human body than alcohol and most of the Rx drugs sold in the world. Besides, if weed is legalized, you’ll NEVER see an advertisement for it outlining side effects such as bleeding, liver failure, loss of vision, rashes on the skin and on rare occasions…..death. The main thing I want to say is, the best solution would be to eradicate the market for illegal drugs from the human condition. Short of suddenly finding a magical unicorn that grants wishes, this best option is out of reach in reality.
A lower drug use society is an attainable goal but it is only attainable if we deal with the evidence and world as it really is, not as we wish it to be.
The plant which the founders of our nation grew in abundance, which was promoted to farmers by the United States Department of Agriculture during WWII, and has significant applications in nutrition, durable goods, medicine, and dare I say it, as a safer alternative to recreational ingestion than alcohol is illegal for many reason… not one of them actually make sense to me and I’m dumbstruck that so many people can be blind to the counterproductive effects of cannabis prohibition, especially with the wealth of information about the inception of such laws. Do you know that the AMA adamantly opposed the original federal Tax Stamp act, but the record clearly shows a congressman announcing they supported it “100%” to a colleague who had not attended the hearing?
I support acts of civil disobedience which bring attention to laws which do us more harm than good. I was elated to hear of the recent planting of industrial hemp seeds by farmers & businessmen on the DEA lawn… they got arrested for trespassing, and they’ll happily pay their fine & deal with the small legal hassle to point out our country allows hemp products within it’s borders, but is the only industrialized nation in the world which does not grow it domestically. Even the conservative panel known as the Shafer Comission put together by President Nixon expressed that “the criminalization of possession of marihuana for personal use is socially self-defeating as a means of achieving this objective.” The objective being lowering drug use/abuse, limiting access to kids and discouraging crime.
I am thinking of protecting our law enforcement personnel from needless harm and wasted hours when I engage in the drug policy reform arena, and it’s difficult for me to understand the perspective that this law will protect anyone better than a regulatory structure which would limit access to kids, ensure quality controls and drive the criminal element out of the business.

ol’ lt. steve here knows the rope regarding reefer. Why? Cops are hypocrites. It’s all about the dollar.
More arrests = more fines. No one with three functioning brain cells should be out smoking weed and
driving, but law enforcement thrives on that. Why? Fines. While ol’ Tom, the cop busts jimmy for smoking a jay in transit, and then multiply this by 100, why it’s an increase of $$$$ to the police department, not to mention what gets confiscated during the arrests which later magically ‘disappears’. Then ol’ Tom the cop gets a award for his ‘efforts’ – picks up a 12 pack on the way home and smokes a joint. Cops never cared about safety, public or private, they care about money.

I don’t even smoke pot and I think it should be legal. Just from a logical perspective, how is it any worse than alcohol? I did smoke a few as a teenager but decided the risk of being arrested far outweighed the enjoyment it made me feel.
I think the policeman is basically trying to tell all you pot smokers that if you are going to smoke pot, smoke it in the privacy of your own home while not doing anything else illegal or drawing attention to yourself. In other words be smart. I’m sure Mr. Rose would rather spend time capturing real criminals than dumb pot smokers.

I feel compelled to list my fav ways not to get busted while smoke pot:
1. Never smoke joints. its a waste and you dont really need that much. Get a small pipe or a one hitter.
2. There is one spot in your car that is safer than most. It’s called crotching it. Cant say I was ever searched there back in the day.
3. Wind direction can be your friend. And your enemy..
4. When smoking while driving, crack a damn window.. Dont light when other cars are around. Avoid doing it at stoplights.
5. Dont bring a bong in the car. ( dont ask me why we needed that 2ft bong on the way to Spring Break…lol)
6. Worried about the smoke?? Blow it into a trashbag with a straw and tied up. Cup your bowl to prevent excess smoke to escape. Plus it puts out the fire.
7. Never ever drive with a beer between your legs, stearing with your knee while holding tinfoil with hashoil and trying to light it with the other hand.. (Joey Chitwood eat your heart out
)
8. Dont carry more than you need for the day, two if your in the high country…lol
9. Dont think the person behind you on the skilift can smell it?? wanna bet??…

This man is a higher-end police officer in a state with a record of corruption and abuse by authorities. The illusion here is that Mr. Rose is standing above all this crime and corruption when in fact, if this jackass says he\’s clean he\’s a damn liar. He\’s probably smoked pot before and just cares to pass it off like he hasn\’t. That, my friends, is horse sht.
Who is this guy called Rose? Well folks, he\’s a man paid to incriminate people and act as if he\’s on higher ground. Literally, that\’s what people in his job description do. Here\’s another little snippet for your pondering:

Why would people like cops stop crime, they\’d be without work! No, cops are not there to protect OR serve. They are there to make arrests and call it a night. Arrest is the answer for anything. You are what they refer to in the old world as \”a swung one\”, meaning your only place in societal matters is on the end of a rope. People like you are why the world doesn\’t work anymore.

Lt. Steve, all of these posts about you being corrupt and about how the cops arrest people who smoke pot just to get the “billions of dollars in fines” do not speak for the majority of your “fans”, of which I am one. I met you a few years ago when you were still with Fulton Co. You came to our company to do a presentation and it was awesome!
I’ll bet the law enforcement agencies out there just WISH they could have access to those “billions” in fines. I guess most people don’t realize that there are laws in GA which prevent police departments from having more than 10% of their departments’ budgets consist of revenue from fines. (For those of you who might have a problem following that statement… it means that for every $1 used to finance a police department’s budget, only 10 cents can come from fines.) In short, it’s the city’s budget that gets the bulk of the revenue from fines, not the police department.
The fact of the matter is smoking pot is against the law. If you choose to smoke it outside of your home you increase your risk of getting caught exponentially. Be smart, leave it home. DOH!!

I love the people on here who say things like “no one does something like get stoned and beats up their girl friend”.
Look, walk a mile in a cops shoes and you see a lot off things you would never have believed to ever happen. Ive seen someone who was only high on pot get into a fight with their wife and then stab their wife and son.
Ive been to a least 100 domestic disputes involving ONLY a fight about pot or money spent on pot, seriously.

I sure hope Tony isn’t a cop – knowing he would “love” to tase someone for utilizing their 1st Amendment right of free speech… I don’t agree with “Rentapig’s” rant but come on.. kinda just goes to show the attitude of the “bad” power tripping trigger happy cops that ruin it for the reasonable ones.
I am all for the legalization of marijuana, but I do think Mr. Rose here is right about not being dumb about it’s unlawful use in the interim. If you call the cops with your stuff sitting on the coffee table, or drive around in a smoke filled car like Cheech and Chong, you’re just asking to get arrested.
The problem with trying to change the law is that if you come out in support of legalization, you are incriminating yourself to some degree. Most of us don’t want and can’t afford that. Kudos to President Obama (and you definitely won’t hear me say that often) for directing the DEA to cease pursuing arrests on medicinal marijuana users and suppliers that follow state regulations. It’s a long overdue step in the right direction! Hopefully reasonable minds will prevail on this issue.
