Suicide’s an ugly thing, and you can help prevent it

(Editor’s note: Portions of this blog may be too graphic for some readers.)

Something that you don’t hear about in the news — because it is generally deemed not newsworthy, unless there is absolutely nothing else going on — is suicide calls.

A lot of people kill themselves. Unless you knew them or knew of them, you really don’t hear about it.

The latest was this week in north Sandy Springs. A man, about 30-something, with mounting debt and a failed marriage, walked back into a wooded area next to an apartment tennis court and shot himself. His body was in the woods about two days before a meter-reader found him. After a couple of days, it’s not a pretty sight.

When you get a call like this, it obviously comes over as a “body found,” so it’s a crime scene. The first responders, after determining the victim is dead, set up a crime scene. Thanks to radio scanners, it takes about five minutes before the media folks from the assignment desk call.  Once you tell them it was a suicide, they retreat because they generally don’t cover suicides unless it has an odd twist like murder-suicide.

It has always perplexed me as to what it must be like to be at the final place and time that a person decides to go ahead and do it. Men typically shoot themselves. Women, for the most part, prefer to overdose. People kill themselves for a variety of reasons. Money is the most common.

People don’t see the end of the road. Or maybe they do. They just don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, I guess.

A number of child molestation suspects, on the eve of their court dates, have taken their lives. I guess you could say that‘s a guilty plea.

Whatever the reason, it amazes me. What was going through their mind the second they pulled the trigger?

Here’s another something not well known. There are those who can even screw up a suicide. Many years ago, the cops got a call from a friend of a man who said he was going to kill himself. The officers knocked on the door. No answer. They knocked again and heard a gunshot. The bullet came through the door about a foot over the head of the first officer. The officers then heard a second shot.

Later, when they made the entry into the apartment, they found the man, dead of a gunshot wound. What had happened was evident by the grazing wound at the top of the victim’s head. He had missed with the first shot, probably by flinching at the last moment. The round scraped the top of his head and then went through the front door. He corrected his aim with the second shot.

Another man, who suspected his girlfriend was cheating on him, went to her condo where she and her friend (turned out she wasn’t cheating on him) were talking. He shot them both dead, then turned the gun on himself. He shot himself under his chin with the barrel facing upwards, obviously intending the bullet to go north to do the maximum damage. Instead, the round went straight up the front of his face, damaging a lot of his face and especially his sinuses. He didn’t die. It was not a pretty sight when he made his first court appearance.

Depression is an evil thing and it takes people to a place where they believe that death is the answer. That’s why it is important for friends and family to do something to help someone deep in depression.

When people talk about suicide, it’s not just an attention-getter like we used to believe. Don’t let that stuff go unnoticed. Call someone. Call the doctor or even a hotline.

But do something.

Then you have your bridge jumpers, your crane climbers, and then there’s the bridge hangers.

About a month or so ago someone fashioned a noose and decided to hang themselves from the bridge on Indian Trail in Gwinnett County over I-85 SB. I saw all the police cars and everything on the bridge, but they were off to the side. They had said on the radio there was a car fire on I-85 SB at Indian Trail, so when I got close to there, I expected to see smoke. The body was found hanging from the bridge, with personal papers scattered all over the road. The guy hung himself over having lost his job and a mountain of personal debt. I’m sure everyone who saw that on the way to work thought that day wasn’t going to go over too well.

People like to talk about the murders, but according to the CDC there are twice as many suicides as there are homicides. Homicides just make better news, so we never hear about them. There was also a statistic floating around a couple years ago that said something like 10 times more women than men attempted suicide, but that 10 time more men were successful in their attempts.

Wine is fine but whiskeys quicker
Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle and drown your sorrows
Then it floods away tomorrows

Evil thoughts and evil doings
Cold, alone you hang in ruins
Thought that youd escape the reaper
You cant escape the master keeper

cause you feel like youre living a lie
Such a shame whos to blame and youre wondering why
Then you ask from your cask us there life after birth
What you sow can mean hell on this earth

Now you live inside a bottle
The reapers traveling at full throttle
Its catching you but you dont see
The reaper is you and the reaper is me

Breaking laws, knocking doors
But theres no one at home
Made your bed, rest your head
But you lie there and moan
Where to hide, suicide is the only way out
Dont you know what its really about

Whenever I see a suicide, it makes me sad.

That’s one less person to fill my quota. Damn.

Steve,

I think this is a GREAT Article… All of your Blogs are fantastic. But with this specific situation with the suicide, we have an issue. A friend of mine who lives at the apartment complex told me that the apartment complex left notes on all the residents doors saying to keep an eye on your surroundings. We all know that we need to keep a keen eye on our surroundings but for a suicide, no need to shake up a entire neighborhood in a relatively safe area. I think the article that has been posted on the AJC ( http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/northfulton/stories/2009/06/30/sandysprings_body_found.html) Could have been a little more clearer also on what happened. Yes it is ironic that I do frequent this blog and did but two and two together with the two stories. I think that a brief phone call, better ajc story or a television spot on one of the local news stations might calm down the thousands of residents at this location. Again Steve, good work.

Razors pain you,
And rivers are damp;
Acids stain you,
and drugs cause cramp.

Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give,
Gas smell awful;
You might as well live.

Seems we’re reading more and more of the murder/suicide but seldom do I read of a single victim of suicide. Perhaps it is time we do- graphic descriptions of what a family may see when they identify the victim may help deter someone from attempting or succeeding killing themself. Great blogging, Steve. Keep informing.

I cry everytime I hear bad news, it makes it so much worse to know that people dont care enough to give these stories time. If the media would give it more time, we would have less of it. people would be more aware of these situations. I believe these people deserve their stories to be heard, to be listened to. The man who hung himself at the indian Trail bridge was a homeless person, not a person who was drownin in debt. He would go to Krystals and use the bathroom there, but many places had stoped letting him in to clean himself, etc i guess he found no other solution… How sad is it that one cared enough to help this man, even the cars driving by, SOMEONE had to see his intention, or when he was preparing his rope. SOMEONE step forward, speak out, we should make these topics more of a priority to PREVENT any more suicides and violence. STOP TAKING LIFE!
At this point though, i feel as if no one cares enough, and it gives me deep sorrow. That in itself is depressive. I encourage anyone to lend a hand, if you see a person in need, HELP. if you suspect anyone is depressed, TALK ABOUT IT. dont be afraid of their reaction, you must address the issue to help remedy this condition.
