Grantham says he’s staying at UGA

Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who interviewed Thursday for a job as the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator, said Friday night that he has taken himself out of the running and will remain at UGA.

“I want to thank (coach) Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints organization for the opportunity to interview and get to know them. They are a first-class organization in every respect,” Grantham said in a prepared statement. “As I said Wednesday, Georgia is a great place, my family loves it here, and I do as well.

“This is where our heart is, and today and I have withdrawn my name from consideration for the position with the Saints. I’m excited to start preparations for another season and along with the rest of our defensive staff look forward to coaching some really good returning players as well as developming some very talented newcomers.”

Grantham, a former longtime NFL assistant, has been Georgia’s defensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

I hate to admit it, but I think Mr. Sweat is correct. Oh well, the sun will continue to shine during the predicted hours and I will always be grateful to be a Georgia Bulldog for life – and I don’t need a tattoo to prove it.

Thank goodness the old comment page is back. I hated that other one.

We need to be sure that coaches who will stay are the ones doing the recruiting .

If he loves UGA so much, why was he interviewing elsewhere? We ain’t dumb. Duh.

Grantham is full of it….should have said this long ago and maybe we could have ended speculations and grabbed all the kids that initially wanted to be Dawgs…I just have a funny feeling about this guy…I love the Dawgs, but I really would care if he decided to jump ships….it’s not like he’s keepin’ the ship afloat…..if you really want my opinion…we couldn’t stop a nose bleed last year!!!

I Wish he had left for the NFL.With all the talent we had on our defense last year we should have been one of the top five defenses in the country.Instead we were mediocre at best.

This guy is a very short term and i hope he goes sooner than later.

We have asst. coaches on staff to replace him so it would not be a huge loss
if he left.

MY guess is that he will leave after this football season.

GEORGIA needs to get a big time recruiter so we can get the top

players in the state only getting one of the top ten players is a disgrace!

Real Cocky, with Ace Sanders and Marcus Lattimore gone, I would be worrying more about your offense. Our defense should be the least of your worries.

Good news!!!

Dear Real Cocky -

Good luck trying to stop our offense this year. BTW have you figure out how you’re going to score this year without Lattimore?

I don’t get this, if Georgia is in his heart, like he says, why was he interviewing at other jobs, don’t make much sense to me.

If you look at Grantham’s track record, he jumps around a lot, kind of unstable for him and his family, kind of like Van Gorder there.

Loyalty to a Head Coach and fans and an organizaqtions, and family roots, are not important to Grantham.

Grantham is good at what he does, people are going to consider him. Even Erk Russell moved on. That said, I’m not happy with the way Grantham handled it.

One thing for certain, it makes me appreciate CMR even more. We are fortunate to have Richt. There is no question his loyalty remains with UGA and has for a long time. Have no doubt, Richt will prepare for the inevitable departure of Todd Grantham, whenever that might be.

I agree with the earlier comment that we need a big time recruiter that can in the higher caliber players that want to win an actual National Championship. So we can be up there with the likes of Alabama and contend for # 1 and not settle for being in the top 10. Don’t get me wrong we had a good year in 2012 but why can’t Georgia be the place that all these top players want to come to. We get a few good names and then Bama loads up killing us in recruiting aqain year after year after after year. I think Hinds Ward would be good here at Georgia. He practically put himself on CMR lap asking for a job. He could really help this school in more than recruiting. He lived football here and was so good as a professional player. Oh well I guess I need to stop but please Georgia wake up and lets do what these other schools are doing…..we put some very good players in Pro market. We need to pay our coaches like the other top schools do. Let’s make Georgia a top 3 team like Alabama, Lsu, and the big boys

Did Granthum withdraw after he found he wasn’t going to be selected? Im know he hurt recruiting quite a bit. He said on tape last week that his family loved it here and he LIKED It alot too! He will be gone within 2 years so go on now and don’t hurt recruiting for yeaqrs to come! A job hopper is always a hopper. Why can Alabama hold on to coach Smart for so long? Good money I guess. Come on Georgia get the payroll in line with these other top tear schools unless being average is all you want to be. COME ON MAN!!!

To all you “couldn’t-care-less about Grantham” folks – Have you forgotten all the missed tackles, tackles never tried, and defensive players standing and watching the opposition run into end zones just a few short years ago? Now when the Dawgs need a defensive stand, or coverage we can expect to get an effective effort from our guys! I can remember pre Coach Grantham Saturdays where the only defense Georgia had was an ineffective offense from the other team. How about that we can even expect a defense in the 4th quarter!

I’m very happy Coach Grantham is staying, I would have bemoaned his leaving. We have one of the best DCs in the country and should be happy he is staying.

you don’t go out with another woman….If he’d gotten the right offer, he would be gone…I question his committment…Will he go “fishing” next year as well?

IMO, what would be great is if you could get Terry Hoage to come be the DC. Jeff Fisher tried once and was turned down. But, this is different is a Alumni! And…( I know I’m dreaming ) if Herschel Walker was brought in as the recruiting coordinator.
