Kwame Geathers had 40 tackles, five tackles for loss and a sack while starting four games for the Bulldogs this past season. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
On the day Georgia landed its new defensive line coach, the Bulldogs lost their most important defensive lineman.
Kwame Geathers, a 6-foot-6, 355-pound rising senior and four-game starter at noseguard, informed UGA coaches on Wednesday he intends to enter the NFL draft this year.
“That was the speculation since the bowl game, obviously, but nothing was in writing,” said Chris Wilson, who was officially announced as the Bulldogs’ defensive line coach Wednesday afternoon. “I didn’t get a chance to meet the young man but I know he was one heck of a player watching him from afar. I had yet to get a chance to sit down with him. But it’s one of those deals where you want what’s best for the young man. If him and his family feels that’s the best thing, you wish them the best of luck.”
Wilson had to deal with similar decisions while serving as Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator the past three years and while working at his alma mater, Oklahoma. The Maroon Bulldogs lost Fletcher Cox a year early to the NFL draft last year. Cox went to the Philadelphia Eagles with the 12th pick overall.
“It’s part of college football nowadays,” Wilson said. “If you get kids more than three or four years is rare and especially five years now.”
Geathers was redshirted, so he has already been at UGA four years. His departure is not unexpected as he comes from a football-playing family that rarely completed its college eligibility.
Geathers could not immediately be reached for comment. But but he first told the subscription-based website Dawgs247.com of his decision.
“I’m going to go ahead and leave,” Geathers told reporter Gentry Estes. “I felt like I was ready to go. I think I did everything at Georgia that I wanted to do. I felt like it was time to get a jump on the next step in my career.”
Geathers played in all 14 games for the Bulldogs (12-2) this past season. His primary role was to back up second-team, All-SEC starter John Jenkins. But after defensive end Abry Jones was lost to a season-ending ankle injury midseason, Geathers played primarily at noseguard while Jenkins moved outside to end. Geathers started in the Capital One Bowl against Nebraska and had three tackles. He finished the season with 40 tackles, five tackles for loss and one sack and closes his career with 98 tackles, two sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
Geathers’ departure is not a surprise, especially considering his family’s history regarding the NFL. On Wednesday, Georgia announced it had hired Mississippi State defensive coordinator Chris White to replace Rodney Garner as the Bulldogs’ defensive line coach. Garner was extremely close to Kwame and the entire Geathers family, and his decision to leave UGA for Auburn was thought to galvanize Kwame’s decision to move on.
Georgia is hopeful that promising redshirt freshman John Taylor will be able to fill Geathers’ shoes next season. The Bulldogs also moved Garrison Smith inside to noseguard in the bowl game when Geathers had to leave the game due to fatigue. Rising junior Mike Thornton is also waiting in the wings and Georgia is hot on the recruiting trail for several other impact defensive line recruits, including junior college all-star Toby Johnson and high school blue-chipper Montravius Adams.
The Bulldogs had already lost star linebackers Jarvis Jones and Alec Ogletree to NFL early declarations.

Good luck. I enjoyed watching your career.
IT is time to start with an entirely new rotation. Competition will be keen and UGA does have some talented inventory and incoming players. This is good and is tally expected by all.

Sorry to see him go as we need as much experience as we can, but it’s not surpising. Especially with Garner bolting. I’m nowhere near an expert on this as much as the rest of you, but where is he expected to land? Certainly not 1st or 2nd round, so where then?
Good luck in the NFL, Kwame.

Good look young man! – I think GA will be fine – we will actually have some competition and hopefully get some one that was not pushed around as much as Geathers – big guy – but lacks strenght and motivation -he was a big reason other teams could run up the middle as much as they did.

Thanks for the info, I have been wondering about him and heard he was very very strong and physical, I don’t know if Garner played a little favoritism since he was in good with the Geathers family, as Kwame seemed to get pushed around quite a bit for a big man, and from what I heard about Mr. Taylor, is he could not be pushed off the line easily. I hope he steps up and makes us forget all about big john and Kwame.

I just don’t see how a guy who never starts a full season in college can make it in the Nfl. He couldn’t even beat out deanglo Tyson in 2010 and Tyson was a very undersized ng playing out of his normal position. My prediction is he will sign a contract and in two years he will eat himself out of the league because he is to lazy to burn off all the food from all the extra money he will be making. OK some defensive guys are going to the pros. Everyone said there was plenty of talent there. So why was the defense so porous. Sure, they were opportunistic and individual players made some great plays and caused some turnovers but overall, not very good. Is is the scheme? The coaching? If it’s not the athletes then what is it? I dont know if I’ve seen a good explanation.

I don’t know what games you all watched but Geathers is a hell of a player. And just as good if not better than Jenkins. Yea he was tired during the Nebraska game, that is because he basically played the whole game because Jenkins couldn’t work hard enough to pass his classes and be bowl eligible. Geathers will be fine and all of you naysayers and fair weather Georgia fans will continue to bask in negativity. Maybe you all should take a better look at the Bama game and watch Geathers ability. Because I was there and he held his own against Barrett Jones not to mention he had the first sack for the D Line during the seawon . #GoDawgs

To those saying that Geathers was not ready, will not make it in the NFL do not understand the role that Kwame will play in the NFL. Big Players in the trenches are not abundant as they seem. The guys who hold up Offensive Lineman allowing linebackers to make tackles. Geathers will do just fine in the right organization with the right development. Most big guys like Geathers take 2 or 3 years to come into their own and he will make one heck of a player at the next level and this is coming from a Bama Guy first, SEC guy second.
While on the subject of players leaving a program, One has to really wonder what is going on at LSU? 10 players now leaving the program and 7 of them on defense plus their punter. That number on top of the seniors leaving makes LSU one of those programs that may be looking at a downturn in their program if some changes are not made….that is of course on the outside looking in.

UGADawg97, the NFL draft projection for AM was 2nd or 3rd. I would hope their projections would be pretty accurate since players are basing career decisions on them. An interesting article would be a comparison of projections to outcomes. It has probably already been done.
As for Geathers, I tend to agree with those who say he underperformed. I will be surprised if he amounts to much in the NFL despite the family name. I wish him the best, though.

Not everyone that plays at UGA is a DGD just because they played there. Not everyone is in it for the team. They simply aren’t. That is how life works. Its hard to argue about Murray who has been laying it on the line since his first game. Most of these guys are working, playing, eating their way toward one thing, getting paid (a lot) to play football. Winning, being a Dawg, etc means a lot less to most of them (in spite of going through the grueling practices) than it does to most of you who don’t do anything but type.

I heard this may happen, but I can’t think of one reason why this is a good move. Seriously Geathers, you’ve accomplished everything you wanted? You haven’t even started a season. Since Grantham has been at UGA, geathers has probably been the biggest bust. I remember when he was the spring MVP, and since then haven’t heard a thing. I was really hoping with Jenkins out of the way, who I think was also a big disappointment, that he would really step his game up. I see Jenkins as a late 2nd to 3rd round, and Geathers as a 4th-6th. The only reason he really gets drafted is based on his size.

I’m no expert, but i thought both Geathers and Jenkins were a major reason teams were able to run up the middle against us. To me they are as overrated as Mount Cody. Just big ole dudes who don’t really do the job. Nebraska’s center was turning Geathers around like he was a revolving door. If the big dude in the middle gets pushed around the whole defense basically breaks down. Hoping the smaller players will know how to get low and use their quickness and leverage to maintain position. Hope Geathers and Jenkins prove me wrong, but I don’t see a real good future for them down the road.

I know Andy Landers has been the UGA Women’s coach forever, but it’s time for McGarrity to pop his ass, along with Mark Fox. UGA basketball should take a backseat to NO program anywhere else in the country, and we can’t even recruit a decent Men’s team. This program has gone backward the last 2 years. At one time I thought Mark Fox could coach AND recruit. No I plainly see he can’t do either. Andy Landers is tired and old and it’s showing in his coaching.
Time for the AD to swing that axe again and clean house just like he did last year. And for God’s sake find some players that want to PLAY.

The following sentence is interesting: “His departure is not unexpected as he comes from a football-playing family that rarely completed its college eligibility.” I imagine the following 2 words could be added to the end of the sentence: “or education.” Did any of his family, whoever they may be, have any success in the NFL or otherwise?

Good luck, Kwame! Make the Dawg nation proud. There is a sadness to college football when your favorites leave, but when a hole is created some young stud always steps in and fills it. We’ll see who does it next year. We already have some serious talent and hopefully we can get some new folks who can make an impact in their first year, especially for depth. Garrison Smith was my favorite player to watch on the line last year, so I expect big things out of him next year. His motor never stops running. Drew was playing well against Nebraska. I’m excited about ‘13!

He will have to work a little on his technique, but big guys to clog up the middle are a premium in the NFL. If he works hard, and listens to the coaches, he will be just fine.
Did anybody look at some of the big guys upfront for the Redskins and Seahawks, this past weekend. Big guys a plenty and guts sticking out of their jerseys all over the place. For that fact, the NFL is full of big guys, that aren’t exactly models of nutrisystem but go on to have successful careers in the NFL. It is a big mans game on the line.
The young man played with as much heart as anybody else did on the football field for the DAWGS so how about some of you showing a little class, if possible, and if you have nothing good to say, do not say anything. These kids do their best to not only secure a future, at least for a lot of them, in the NFL, but to represent the DAWGS and entertain the fans for very little monetary compensation, other than a few bucks given by the bowl sponsors and a few gift certificates to a sponsor store. How about showing some class, and respecting what they contributed. I don’t expect the trolls to do that of course, but true UGA fans should try at least.

Hope this new DL coach is better than Rodney Garner. Garner and Geathers have a lot in common when you think about it, an not good stuff. Garner will fit right in at Auburn where everything’s under the table and corrupt. Geathers said that he had accomplished everything at UGA, but since he didn’t earn a degree I guess it must be a family tradition for him. He is too lazy to really perform in the NFL in any meaningful way. UGA will be better off without him because the new talent knows that they can get playing time now.

Kwame will get his money, but I am concerned about his technique – he tends to stand straight up at the snap and gets pushed around easily (see recent bowl game where he disappeared and was pretty much dominated) – NFL nose tackles get very low and have leverage – he will be lucky to get any snaps – but again, he will have the money so good for him. You can’t coach 355 lbs.

red and black – don’t misunderstand – I am happy for him and I understand the decision – but don’t say he will have to work on technique a “little” – more than that is involved – some players have trouble getting low and it is the difference between a force and a below average player in the NFL.

We are about to leave town and think we have secured all participating Krystal’s. This has been a tough yet exciting job to keep the Bama fans and their pants in check this year. We had a few close calls due to ND fans passing out but we located them to safe zones within the establishment. ND fans were very cautious as well not to drink too much because they knew it could end up with a naked Bama fan sitting on your shoulders. Also, university officials did a great job of explaining to the fans base that while being naked in Krystal’s is tolerated in the state of Alabama, it is not tolerated in places like New Orleans or Miami. Great job by UA!
P.S. I hope Bama does not make it to the BCSNCG next year so we are not required to work security.

The bottom line is that big time college and the NFL are meatgrinders. You only have so many years of football in that body before being shown out the door.
You read about the multi-million dollar salaries and signing bonuses paid to the star players, but the reality is that the NFL minimums are extremely lucrative and if you manage your finances, you can be set for life after a few years in the NFL.
For the 2012 season, minimum NFL base salaries are …
1) Rookie – $390,000
2) 1 year – $465,000
3) 2 year – $540,000
4) 3 year – $615,000
5) 4-6 year – $700,000
6) 7-9 year – $825,000
7) 10+ year – $925,000
Case in point, I thought Danny Ware was crazy when he left college for the NFL. Here was a guy who went from 1st string tailback in his freshman year to 3rd string in his junior year. But, he is still in the NFL and made a minimum of $700,000 last year. How many of us on this blog make that kind of scratch? Yeah, I thought so.
So, that extra year gives Ware an extra $7-800k in earnings potential. You could argue that if he stayed, he might have gone higer in the draft, but as has been mentioned before, that is no guarantee and he could get hurt and not make anything.
Geathers is in much the same situation as Ware. If he stays, does he really improve his draft opportunities? Maybe, maybe not.
Good luck to him.

This clown sees the writing on the wall. He knows that John Taylor is going to be the next BIG thing on UGA’s D line, and it would be embarrassing to have to get behind a redshirt freshman on the depth chart. Richt and Grantham know full well that they must put the best talent on the field in order to keep their jobs at this point. Geathers has been a joke just like John Jenkins, and it is now time for the highly over paid Grantham to produce, no matter what. The Dawg Nation can only hope that the reports on John Taylor are true. Seth Emerson’s article in Macon paper states that Geathers received a third thru sixth round evaluation. I’d like to know just what this idiot thinks he has accomplished at UGA. Good riddance.

Sorry Logical, you are wrong again.
We got gashed versus the running game because our linebackers are pass rushers and not run stoppers. Christian Robinson? He might weigh 220. Jones and Tree were very good players but struck no fear in a running game. Our D-Line lost some players due to injury and transfer and the depth killed us. Part of the 16 open scholarships. That gets exposed when you play quality teams.
Our nose tackle of the future is being redshirted-J Taylor. That is why we are not desperately going after JUCO NG’s. We have 3 other young players ready to step up too.

Former Dawg Player Father
January 10th, 2013
12:38 pm
As the father of a former player who is now currently playing in the CFL with hopes of latching on to a NFL team, it is unfortunate that some people on these blogs have no( yes no) understanding of the dynamics it takes to play at UGA or any other premier program. The daily grind of school, tutoring, labs, film watching, football homework, practice, medical treatment , meetings, workouts and various other requirements from the university does to the student athlete.
When a student athlete like Geathers has nagging injuries, gets double teamed, crack backed, rolled up on and beat up during practice and games on top of all the items listed above it is not as easy to “comeback” like one of the smaller athletes and skill guys. Overall this is a decision he should have made because of the issues 99.9% of you have no clue about. I guarantee you one thing most of you will claim him as a “Georgia Bulldawg” if he does well in the NFL, the same guys will be on these blogs the day of the draft and count him toward the numbers of Georgia Bulldogs drafted and yell out loud of how UGA did good in the draft,
So before many of you keep trash talking, learn about what these young people go through and how many many of them are truly fighting for their personal existence and their livelyhood that many of them have had to fight for much of their lives.
Have a great day and Go Dawgs!

Well, most folks thought after losing 3 starters on the OL from 2011 team that would be a problem but actually the OL performed better this season then last. Having Gurshall as RB’s helped ease the transition. Maybe the same will happen to the D w/all the new faces next season. Hope so. UGA’s O
Ine had a new coach entering his second year. I do not know why, the 2012 O lne played well and with experience, coaching communication and depth, will make us better.
The opposite is true with UGA’s D line, especially. In 2013, we will have a new D line coach, and new but healthy group of very physical players. I see major upward motion here. Look at the stats for 2012. why lament the exodus of the GA D for that year??
Go Dogs.

Good luck to you in the NFL. UGA will reload and will be fine on defense. I really like the new D-Line Coach. It’s time to bring in the new guys who love UGA and want to play. We must always recruit knowing some of the guys will turn pro in their 3rd year. Hard to turn down the $$ in the NFL.
Bring on the new guys who will work hard to play defense and who want to be at UGA.
Go Dawgs !

DawginLex: Well said WRT the run defense.
Hunkerdown: on what are you basing your assumption that Geathers is selfish?
Everyone hating on Geathers either doesn’t understand football or is a troll.

MT – is that just bad satire? How many DTs play every single game? The answer may surprise you (its none) and they all leave the game due to fatigue. Its a pretty tiring position to play. I’m assuming you have never played a game of football in your life. You know who else frequently leaves games to catch breath? Every defensive position (except DB, usually), as well as RB and WR. Not really unusual.
Former Dawg Player Father – well said.

I hate that my beloved team has such a vitriolic, arrogant, and ignorant fan base.
Seriously, where did all this hate for Kwame come from? I’ve never heard any real fan crap on a DGD like this. It is really, really strange.

The defense was going to struggle next year with or without Kwame.

I suppose I should somehow be flattered that some idiot on this blog, chose to use my nickname to post something stupid and contradictory, but I assure you I am not.
If you haven’t got the equipment needed to be a man, don’t try to mess with a person who does. It makes you look childish at best. Just a gutless wonder.

Georgia basketball has about hit an all time low. Some of hugh durhams terrible teams in the 1990’s would crush the current team. This year’s team does give effort but does not play with passion, caldwell pope is the only decent player the dawgs have this year. These other 2 and 3 star players are beyond pathethic. Never seen a team with lack of ball sense and scoring. I mean our guys can’t even finish off lay ups let alone jumpers or three’s. Fox needs to go ASAP…

You assume wrong ,I played a down or two. Say what you want but the defense was tired out in the Bama game, even one of the commentor’s said something about it.Let me tell you something wise man, just because someone says something negative doesn’t mean their haters. Got it.

Too bad AM didn’t go pro too. It is time for Mason to get a shot. Murray plays poorly in big games and is to the point where I just don’t see him getting any better.

He did everything he wanted to do at UGA? I would think one thing he should want to do is start, & another is win a championship. He only started, what, 4 games. I mean, come on! I guess I’m not surprised though. People go pro all the time these days.

I hope he does well in NFL. I am disappointed to read the following: “I think I did everything at Georgia that I wanted to do.” I would think that he would of at a minimum wanted to play on a team that was a SEC Champion (which, as we know, has usually resulted in a National Championship in recent years).

One question for the day to Dawg fans: Why is our AD “pleased with the direction CMF has the basketball program headed?”

Good luck to Kwame…. hate to see you go but thanks for being a Dawg. Jonathan Taylor is the likely starter at NT in 2013. Clemson, S.C. and LSU – is there a more difficult schedule to start with any where in the nation? Signing day coming soon and UGA needs to close strong – Toby Johnson, Laremy Tunsil, Montravius Adams, Alvin Kamara, Reuben Foster.

Don’t think UGA is pleased withe the basketball program…… recruiting in state recruits is key and so far has been a failure.

In basketball you can leave any time – after one year if you wish and that makes recruiting priority #1. Florida and Kentucky have been successful – why not UGA?

To get the in state recruits in Georgia they would have to be willing to invest the cash necessary to draw a top five college coach – probably won’t happen.
