QB Aaron Murray explains his decision to remain at Georgia

ATHENS – Aaron Murray said he knew he wanted to return to Georgia for his senior season “as soon as the clock hit zero” in the SEC Championship game. The rest of the time he spent validating in his head what was already in his heart.

Murray announced via Twitter this past Sunday night that he was indeed going to complete his eligibility with the Bulldogs. On Tuesday he met with reporters at UGA’s Butts-Mehre football complex to explain his decision.

“I pretty much knew all along deep down inside that I wanted to come back,” Murray said. Obviously I didn’t want to base my decision on emotion. I wanted that SEC game to go by a little bit before I made my decision. After that game, I was like, ‘I’m coming back, I’m coming back.’ So I really needed to let that game go, play another game, clear my head and write down the pros and cons of everything.”

Murray, the first quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons, is on track to break SEC records for passing yards, touchdowns and completions. But he said that had little to do with his decision.

The opportunity to return to Georgia and win an SEC championship next season was the strongest incentive.

“I’m excited about our team next year,” he said. “We’ve grown so much over these past two seasons and really put Georgia back on the map. It’s great to be part of that and hopefully we’ll continue to get better. . . . I love Georgia, I love being part of this university, I love being part of this team. I’m just excited to have another year.”

The Bulldogs return 10 starters on offense next season, including the entire offensive line. They will be rebuilding on defense, however.

Murray said previously he received a “second- or third-round grade” from the NFL’s draft advisory board. He said he discussed his situation with former NFL coach Tony Dungy, former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, former UGA quarterbacks David Greene and D.J. Shockley, among others.

“I liked what my grade was,” Murray said. “But obviously I feel like I’ve still got a lot of improvement to make as a quarterback. I’ve got some areas that I need to continue to develop. I’ve talked to Coach (Mike) Bobo and Coach (Mark) Richt about it, too, and they’re really excited about me coming back and continuing to improve. . . .  By the end of the year, I will be as complete a quarterback as I can be heading into the NFL.”

Of course, not everybody is thrilled with Murray’s decision. Junior Hutson Mason, Murray’s backup before redshirting this past season, was quoted in the Marietta Daily Journal as saying he was “frustrated” about having to sit behind Murray another year. Reached by the AJC Tuesday, Mason was decidedly more diplomatic.

“It hasn’t worked out the way I planned,” he said, “but I’m not giving up on my dreams.”

Asked if he was definitely going to be back at Georgia next season, Mason said, “That’s the plan as of right now.”

Meanwhile, Murray spoke of several areas in which he’d like to improve as a senior. Most notably, becoming more of a dual-threat quarterback.

“I think when I got here I tried to stress so much about being a pocket passer, staying in the pocket and making my reads and my progressions,” Murray said. “There’s nothing wrong with that; I still have to work on that and trust my line. I just need to work more on when things do break down or maybe see ahead of time plays I can take off on and get out of the pocket and get as many yards as I can get. Work on my speed a little more. I feel like at my age I’ve gotten a little slower. I’ve got to work on that more and just try to create plays when they aren’t there.”

Asked specifically what he could do to improve his NFL stock, Murray joked, “Hopefully somehow I can grow another two inches, that’d be great. I think we’re incorporating some yoga this offseason, so some stretching may help out a little bit.”

Murray is listed at 6-foot-1 and swears it’s legitimate.

Turning serious, he added: “I’m not worried about where I get drafted next season. I think you can play a dangerous game if you think about that. My No. 1 goal right now is to continue to get better as a quarterback and do whatever I can to make sure this team gets some championships, gets some rings next year.”

Murray’s desire to win a championship at Georgia was driven home as he watched Alabama throttle Notre Dame 42-14 Monday night to claim its third national championship in four years. The Bulldogs lost to Alabama 32-28 after time expired with Georgia on the 5-yard line.

“Oh, it was painful to watch. It was,” Murray said. “I’m happy the SEC won, of course. It definitely showed the nation how good we were, to play Alabama the way we did and were four or five yards away from being in that game. It helped us showed that Georgia is back.”

And now Murray is, too.

Must let Mason play more. A lot more. He might be a David Greene type of quarterback (one you can count on in the fourth quarter to take control, make no mistakes, and win the big games for you). Give him a chance to gain experience and let’s see.

Before it’s all over, we might even forget that there was ever a discouraging word uttered about Murray. He’s done what a bunch of others didn’t——come back for the 4th year. He’s looking much better in my estimation already.

Goldenrod, I heard Tech is having rings made commemorating that momentous achievement.

Al Groh called Johnson and Tech the most “unprofessional, devisive, and negative” football program he’s ever been around. You all must be proud.

Yellow Jacket football just went from being a laughingstock before to an utter disgrace, now.

If the dogs are “back”, why did they lose the two of the three biggest games of the year and, some would argue, the only legit games on their schedule?

And, as Bradley pointed out, the dogs lost to South Carolina as badly as Notre Dame lost to Alabama.

Very glad that Aaron decided to come back for his 4th year. The Dogs will be excellent next year. Know we are losing some defensive starters, but I believe in the work of Coach Grantham.

Our offense is strong and our special team play has improved immensely. If we do the off season work in the weight room and the track and have the conditioning to finish strong in the 4th quarter, we can have another special year.

No we didn’t win the SEC or NC, but we went 12-2 and this is only the 3rd Georgia team to ever accomplish that feat. I am so proud of the Dogs.

So let the little Tech girls that are haters come on the site with their bile and envy.

the problem with uga this year3 is going to be defense, who it will be lacking in inexperience and youth. the offense should be better and uga will have to outscore with large numbers to be competitive.

our new schedule will be another issue, as we add Clemson and Lsu.

this combination will have a negative impact and it will be reflected with worse results in 2013.

I will forecast a record of 9-3 if not worse!

I love all these pre-season predictions. Recruiting isn’t over, so we don’t know which freshman can play right away; we don’t know how many JUCO prospects will be signed, adding more college experience/talent; we don’t know how players will improve during off-season workouts/spring training; we don’t know if a player who has previously been an underachiever returns for fall camp and a major contributor; we don’t know who may get injured and miss significant playing time or an entire season; we don’t know if Grantham will alter his current defensive scheme to reflect the players’ talents; we don’t know if the offense will change its blocking schemes to adequately block that monster defensive end from South Carolina; we don’t know how the offense will expand the role of Keith Marshall in the passing game; we don’t know if the offense will use sets with Gurshall in the game at the same time; and we don’t know if the kicking game will improve.

The same goes for other programs. Indeed, everything is an unknown until teams line up and play.

The only thing we know for certain is that football will be played during the fall of 2013 (unless, of course, the Mayan calendar was off by a month or so).

So let’s give it a rest. Now’s the time to try and trick the IRS out $$$$$$ so we can buy season tickets!

Murray’s our best chance for a championship next year.

The weak link has become Grantham and his defense. He either mans up next year and the D improves or else we need to fire him. The buck stops with Richt so if he can’t get his D to wrap up instead of NFL style throw downs while trying to steal the ball we should fire him too. Absolutely zero discipline on defense.

Really glad Murray is returning. He’s a DGD!

Chip, having read the Mayretta Daily News article, I knew it wouldn’t be long before some writer took his words out of context. Yes, he said he’s “frustrated”. Who wouldn’t be if you’re a competitor?

What he said was, ““It’s frustrating because I was hoping for the opportunity to compete to be the guy this year.”

He further stated, “Coach Richt is a straight up honest guy. He can’t make Aaron’s decision for him. Nobody promised me anything….I’ve enjoyed my time learning and (playing) behind Aaron. He’s a classy guy and I only wish him the best in whatever he does.”

And finally, “I would like to see my (college) career end at UGA,”

Like many Bulldog fans, I’d like to see Mason get some ‘meaningful’ playing time this year; not just mop up. We have a real quandary now with Mason and Bauta, not to mention Ramsey. But it’s a nice problem to have.

Then we also have LeMay and P Welch. What’s their future look like?

There is a log jam of talent at quarterback. Why kill the dreams of others who have waited their turn are now not going to get their chance. This decision does nothing for Murray or the Dogs. I don’t think another year will fix what I believe is an inherent problem. Rising to the occasion is not something you can teach. The Alabama quarterback, by way of contrast, has always been at his best in the clutch. No, he’s not better than Murray but just better when it counts.

AM is a competitor and that can NOT be denied by anyone. He doesn’t play on D or special teams so unless he is throwing 4 picks and fumbling the ball on every other snap then he can’t be blamed for every single loss. He may not be the “best” college QB on 1/8/13 but he will give ya all he has and in most games that’s more than enough to win.

One thing he said that stood out and got me excited is that he wants to work on being a better dual threat QB. I remember seeing him 3 years ago extending the play and I always thought he was fast and pretty elusive. You can beat the bank that he will work on that and he won’t be a Manziel but AM has pretty good wheels and having a great passing QB and running threat is lethal.

I don’t buy for one second that our D is going to struggle next season, we lost some great players but in some of the games they were under achievers and that’s a fact. We have some young studs on D and we have some JC transfers that will make a huge impact on our D. Have faith Dawg Nation!!!

Murray said he got a 2nd-3rd round evaluation. Gamechanger says he didn’t. Gamechanger has evidently measured Murray and found him to be 5-11. Murray says he is 6-1.

Considering how Gamechanger claimed Motel 6 was academically ineligible back before the season started, and has misfired on a number of predictions, I will go with Murray on these issues.

For those of you who actually read the article and din’t come on here to talk trash about Aaron Murray because he is better than your team’s QB… Did anyone pick up on what Aaron said he’d like to improve on? I’ve said for a couple of seasons that I thought Bobo hamstrung Murray by not allowing him to run, Now either Aaron is being diplomatic or he chose to concentrate on being a pure pocket passer. Personally I think this conscious effort to do this has greatly contributed to his tendency to be tight in big games. By not playing instinctively, ie: not using his wheels when he appropriate, he overthinks the situation and thus is way tighter than he should be. What if Manziel consciously made an effort to not run the ball when under pressure? What would his game be like? I’ve said this for years, Bobo needs to take the muzzle off. Well now it seems that Aaron needs to take the muzzle off because I think you will see a much more relaxed playmaker next year because of this. Now I am extra excited.

Saban’s Tide will have all of August and Sept. to prepare for Manziel and you know what that means. If A&M can still beat the Tide,…I bow to the young man with the fast feet. For those of you who remember the Tide/A&M game, Ala. threw an interception inside the 10 yard and they also fumbled inside the 10 yard line. Aabama underestimated A&M because A&M had lost 2 games and Bama was at home.. That won’t happen again.

Grantham was fired on January 11, 2008 after the 2007 season with the Brown’s defense ranking 25th against the pass, 27th against the run, and 30th in total-yards-against among 32 teams. After the way UGA played the run it looks like he back to his old ways. And you win Champships with defense but Offense put fans in seats. Look what happened to him, torn LCL & ACL, Running is what made him so good but running Q’Backs don’t last long in the NFL. A pocket passer with a good O’Line is the answer. For you fools that don’t think AM will make it in the NFL then lets put some $ on it!!! I will say this, he will have to be in the right system to be able to make it, point being that if he goes to say the Chiefs and fails then it will look like it’s his fault and the media will say he’s too short and next thing ya know he will be holding a clip board and out of the league. But you put him in the right system with a good running game and some good receivers then he will make it and will shock some people. The kid has the tools and if you can’t see that then you have no business commenting on his skills!!! I was a HS QB and I’ve been coaching HS QB’s for going on 10 years and AM is a really good QB…

Best QBs in 2013 in the SEC

1. AJ McCarron (won like 2 national championships)
2. Johnny Manziel (won the Heisman, beat Bama at Bama at night in front of the world)
3. Conner Shaw (wins most of his big games)
4. A Murray (nearly beat Alabama after Alabama had spent to much time celebrating a game winning interception)

Now you can say, but Murray is so much better! Yeah, statistically he’s better than Johnny Football… but how did that translate on the national scene? Here’s the Heisman voting results, I don’t see Murray. Probably because the nation recognized junk yards against bad teams when it sees it.

1. Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M; 2,029 (474 first-place votes)
2. Manti Te’o, Notre Dame; 1,706 (321 first-place votes)
3. Collin Klein, Kansas St.; 894 (60 first-place votes)
4. Marqise Lee, Southern California; 207 (19 first-place votes)
5. Braxton Miller, Ohio St.; 144 (3 first-place votes)
6. Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina; 61 (4 first-place votes)
7. Jordan Lynch, N. Illinois; 52 (3 first-place votes)
8. Tavon Austin, West Virginia; 47 (6 first-place votes)
9. Kenjon Barner, Oregon; 42 (1 first-place vote)

4. Murray or Shaw (Shaw better leader, Murray better vs lesser opponents)

Mettenberger is better than Aaron Murray?? What planet do you live on? Mett has had one good game his entire career! Did you even watch the bowl games this year? Murray played very well overall throwing for 427 yards and 5 scores and Mettenberger threw for about 110 yards and blew two chances in a row to pick up the first down, including overthrowing a wide open receiver. With even a decent quarterback, LSU would have won that game.

I think there are a lot of college players who come out early ignoring the advice of the NFL and end up not drafted. Murray was smart to listen, but he can’t improve much on what he’s done this year which evidently wasn’t enough to impress the NFL.

Keep in mind, this is expected to be a very bad QB draft. It’s nothing like last years. And Murray still didn’t impress. It’s the height and inability to win big games, other than this year where they beat Vandy, an embarrassing UF team and a Nebraska team that let Wisconsin put up 70 points on them.

In 2010, UGA beat 0 teams that finished the season ranked including a bowl loss to UCF.

In 2011, UGA repeated that feat and didn’t beat a single team that finished the season ranked.

In 2012, UGA beat 3 teams that finished the season ranked. Vanderbilt, Florida and Nebraska. Vanderbilt did well given where they’ve always been and they’re improving. But Murray’s best game against the 3 teams was against Vandy. Florida finished in spectacular fashion, the nation watched and laughed. Florida also turned the ball over six times against UGA, which helped UGA win considering Murray turned it over 3 times as well. Then there was Nebraska, who lost 70-31 to Wisconsin who went on to lose to Stanford. Note, 70-31. UGA was still tied in the 4th quarter.

In big games Murray does not win. Look no further than the biggest game of the regular season was South Carolina, and he went 11/31, 0 TDs and 1 INT.

The reality is the NFL does not like short QBs because they don’t work. They usually work in college because they’re scramblers, see Johnny Football. Murray is not one of those.

The NFL didn’t want him. Tough pill to swallow. They’d like to see if he can put up Drew Brees numbers but Drew Brees was always good, Murray hasn’t been. So much so there were a lot of Dog fans that wanted him benched mid season and blamed him for all of the problems.

If they thought Murray was the second coming of Drew Brees, they’d put him higher in a weak QB draft. They did not.

Thank God for Reggie Ball

January 8th, 2013
9:47 pm

A. the biggest game of the regular season was Florida not South Carolina

B. I’ll repeat it again, slowly and with more detail. Yes Nebraska’s D gave up 70 in one game (ONE) to Wisconsin, however it was all on the GROUND and last I checked we were talking about the QUARTERBACK. RUSH defense has little to do when evaluating QUARTERBACK play. The Nebraska defense was ranked Number 1. Numero Uno in pass defense. Murray proceeded to have his best statistical game of the season. If you can’t understand that I have given up hope on you.

C. In the same comment you said “UGA beat 3 teams that finished the season ranked” then said “In big games Murray does not win.” tsk tsk tsk….

D. You still have not acknowledged the AWFUL games Johnny Manziel had against LSU and Florida, yet you still want to kill Murray for having bad games against Florida and South Carolina.

“my neighbor has more credentials…”

NFL Draft Advisory Committee

January 8th, 2013
9:48 pm

In its last two games, Nebraska’s defense gave up over 1,220 yards and 115 points or an average of over 600 yards and 57 points per game.

In it’s prime time AT HOME game against Texas A&M, Alabama was only able to rush for 122 yards. Against Georgia, Alabama ran for 350 yards. Interestingly, Johnny Football against Bama ON THE ROAD went 24/31, 253 yards, 2 TDs and added 92 yards rushing. Murray went 18/33, 265, 1 TD and 1 INT.

Both QBs are the same size. But Manziel, like the even shorter Russel Wilson, runs. Makes a difference. The NFL can accept a short QB, but only in the bottom half of the draft.

So Murray is not going to truly improve his NFL standing by staying another year. Not with a worse defense and tougher schedule. What he’s doing is trying to get drafted in 2014, he might not have in 2013.

In the way too early rankings for 2013, Alabama is #1, Oregon #2, Stanford #3, OSU #4, A&M #5, UGA #6, South Carolina #7, Louisville #8, Clemson #9, Florida #10… LSU #13.

Note, first four games for UGA will be against #7, #9, #13, without a defense… and as Spurrier says, a few player suspended.

Murray has only beaten three end of the season ranked opponents. #25 Nebraska, #23 Vandy, #10 Florida. Review the UF game and you see that Murray was 12/24, 1 TD and 3 INTs. That’s his biggest win. Should we review UF’s performances on the season? ULL? Missouri? UGA? Louisville?

I think Murray knows what’s coming in 2013 and would make a move to the NFL, but he didn’t have a choice in the matter.

Murray just needs to reduce or eliminate tipped passes. Get more velocity on the ball and not take chances with big d-linemen in his face. Throw the ball away or take off running.

Murray is good but not great. Greatness brings championship’s…we have no championships. Saban is a class act, CMR is not, and will never be in the national championship game, never. sad but true, we have had talent out our ears year after year can’t get to the dance. It’s not the guys on the field it’s the boys on the sideline who are overpaid and out of their league. CMR does not have the X factor.

I wish i was in Murray’s shoes and could say that i was even on an SEC team much less as a starter. In a few years that boy will be making more money than most of us will ever see. I do find it funny that Murray said UGA is back… because we almost beat Alabama.

And he’s getting older and slower.

Odd things to say. Probably something he heard from the NFL, “you’re short, if the pocket breaks down or you can’t see, can you run? No.

So you’re a short pocket passer? Yes.

No thanks.

The other thing I find interesting, if Murray left, then in a defense rebuilding year against a tough schedule you’d give a new QB valuable experience. With Murray staying, you try to rebuild your defense on a tough schedule and if all goes well at the end of the season they’re good… but the next season you have to break in a new QB.

Oh well. It almost guarantees 2 years of < 9 win seasons. Making falling short on the 4 yard line much more painful.

9 of 15 BCS national championships have been won by an SEC team.

UT x 1
AUB x 1
ALA x 3
LSU x 2 (lost 1 to ALA)
UF x 2

I don’t think I need to bother looking, but I bet none of those teams lost by 28 points (nearly 35) in any game the year they went and won.

The other thing that would be kind of funny is when Murray goes to be measured by the NFL in the combine. One NFL analyst doesn’t believe he’d be over 6 feet tall and he’s probably right.

Does he have the arm strength to throw in lanes? Probably. Good mechanics? Sure. Mobile? No. Good decision making? If the team is not ranked, sure. When he’s against a good team, not so much. Aided by talented WRs against DBs that are not as talented? Yes.

LSU game last year is a great example of playing against NFL quality DBs. I think Tony Dungy tried to help Murray out, maybe he likes Murray given his son works out with him, but it’s obvious Dungy was way off even with a bad QB draft crop with Barkley physically broken.

You know I saw an interesting stat, total defense for 2012. Georgia was ranked… 32? So Ogle, Jones, Jenkins, Rambo, and three other defense starters are leaving and you’re starting off against 3 top 13 teams in the first four games. When Murray gets on the field, he’ll face a very well rested defense. That’s why I’m surprised he didn’t bolt being that he could be a 2nd or 3rd round pick… but I think it’s as obvious as the fact he’s not 6′1″, that he’s not top 2nd or 3rd round.

At some point, you’re going to admit it. Probably when you egg his house again.

NFL Draft Advisory Committee

Here’s another interesting start for 2012.

Least penalized teams in CFB… UGA is #96 out of 120.

That means, they’re the 24th most penalized team.

Also, guess where UGA ranks in total offense? #5? #2? #1? #10? Try #23.

Guess who is #3? Texas A&M.

Now I know, this was the greatest offense ever… for Georgia. It was #20 on the list for 2012. Who was better? Alabama #14, Texas A&M #3, Oregon #2, Clemson #6, Florida St/UNC were even ranked higher.

Golf clap on your best ever year.

Maybe that’s why Murray wasn’t invited to the Heisman? Georgia’s best ever is not in the top 20 in the NCAA.

Which goes back to the NFL problem. The NFL probably sees this a little more open minded and whereas if Johnny was able to come out and did, they’d take a look at him. Obviously, he’s led A&M to be the top 3 scoring offense in the country against SEC WEST defenses. Impressive. But 20-22nd ranked offense in the SEC EAST? Not so impressive.

Mr. Peabody

Guess Hutson should’ve went with the ONLY other FBS school that offered him a scholarship (Iowa)….oh wait they pulled it at the last minute so UGA was the last resort. Enjoy the free education and hope you have remember those high school highlights because that’s al you’ll ever have kid.

NFL Draft Advisory Committee

One more stat, defense.

Guess who the #1 passing defense was? IF you guessed FSU, you are right. Odd. #2? Alabama. I know, odd right? Especially since the biggest knock on Alabama’s defense by not only analyst but Alabama fans was… passing defense. Sometimes stats don’t tell the truth, especially if you don’t have a tough schedule and face a good QB. BTW, Nebraska at 5, UGA at 8? Wow. But don’t pat yourself on the back just yet.

Because rushing defense really tells you a lot about a team. Football is supposedly won in the trenches, like it or not, so lets talk about rushing defense.

Ready? #1… Alabama.

Georgia?… #…. #…. hold on got to go to another page…. #……….. 77.

So if teams just rush, and btw Clemson is a higher ranked rushing team than UGA if you thought UGA was really good, but if teams just rush, Murray will never see that field. not good for padding your numbers and showing something to the NFL. He must have known with all of the defense players leaving and the schedule getting harder that he might not have as good of numbers as he did this year, but he stayed. to win championships.

Yeah, so did Alabama’s players who just won 3rd out of 4th BCS NCG. They mostly are staying. to win championships. who would you bet wins championships in 2013?

Manziel is great because of his ability to scramble but his success was because of two first round draft players off his Offensive line. They will not be with Texas A&M next year . I don’t care how great a Quarterback is the success at least in the SEC is a team effort , when playing the elite programs.
Texas A&M plays a very easy schedule next year which will help them . The only team in the West that can beat them is Alabama. L.S.U. is losing way too many stars to the Pro draft and Mettenberger is not a very good Quarterback. Alabama will win the West next year and will beat Texas A&M by at least 14 point if not more.

Great news that Murray is coming back. Georgia will average over 500 yards a game and Murray will throw for over 4000 yards. Those bloggers on here who are bad mouthing Murray is either related to Mason, you don’t like Georgia and wish Murray would just leave because Georgia is so good with him or you are delusional and it doesn’t matter if Murray breaks every record in the book it still wouldn’t be good enough. Either way why don’t you save yourself a lot of grief and don’t log back on to this website
until 2014 because unless Murray gets hurt he is going to be Georgia’s Quarterback in 2013 and we don’t want you as a fan at Georgia if you hope he gets hurt.
We just went 12-2 in the hardest Conference in football and just missed playing for and probably winning a National Title. We finish 4TH in the only poll that counted because Ohio State didn’t deserve to be rated by anyone. Georgia should have been rated 3RD in both polls if it had been done right. I see no complaints . Grantham’s Defense shut down the passing game at Alabama but they ran for 350 yards and if it had not been for Murray we would have never come close to Alabama.

Just as a quick review, 7 BCS National Championships in a row for the SEC. 0 from UGA.

3 from Alabama, 2 from UF, 1 from LSU and 1 from Auburn.

Top 6 teams in the SEC were 30-0 against bottom 8. That’s not typical SEC ball. It shows a weak bottom 8 which includes UT who has been off for a while, a ARK team decimated by its coach and an AUB team who quit. Basically, if Vandy is winning, something ain’t right. And if UGA is winning the east two years in a row, something is way off. :D

Don’t get me wrong, Murray is a phenomenal QB… if the team is not ranked. The chances are extremely high for a 1-3 start, which is why you have to question why Murray returned knowing he could supposedly be in the 2nd or 3rd round. If he’s looking for millions and wants to be first round, returning to this Georgia team in 2013 ain’t how you do it.

Actually Richt plaed Shockley a lot but Greene most always was playing better so he got the most reps and since he left UGA as the winningest QB in UGA history, Id say it worked out well and Shock ws ready when he got to be starter….Lemay and Mason wont be playing much if Murray is healthy in games that are close, we all know that. Who would play someone else? Nobody. Sucks to be behind Murray right now a 4 year starter BUT you are only ONE play away from being the starter all season. ONE accident or turn or twist or accident at the lake….you never know. Personally, I would want some reps in most games to get experience….

Grantham is fine. It was the allstars on D not being a unit. Classic case. Seen it before. Grantham will have his players he recruited in most positions next year and the D wll be better overall BUT wont have as many big playmakers I dont think. Hard to have another close to Jarvis. Swann looks like one for sure. Hope Jenkins progresses a lot.

UGA will be FINE and so is Grantham. Remember the Philadelphia Eagles after their free agent signings to an already very good team? Allstars everywhere. Everybody gave them the NFC slot in the Super Bowl….they sucked. Seen it many times in my life. Too many stars, too many egos and not enough “team” or coachability and relying on others since their so good….got to have heart and unselfishness FIRST and a unit of allstars usually arent unselfish….UGA D next year will be an unsefish coachable unit mostly all recruited by Grantham for Granthams D….its going to be a good year and even better in 2014 and 2015 and AWESOME in 2016…!

Coach Grantham will have a good defensive unit for UGA on the field. They will be young, but after taking a few lumps in the early games, they will be a much more cohesive unit than they were in 2012. UGA had a lot of defensive stars but they didn’t jell well as a unit together, most of the time. The young kids on the defense this year, will be hungry and I think, once they get their feet wet, will be just fine.

The reason the Nebraske pass defense was rated so high was because nobody had to pass against them. Other than UGAG. Don’t be confused with nobody having to pass with actually having a good defense. I have to say, I had hoped Murray would leave as I beleive and always will that Hudson is as good or maybe better. That’s nothing against Aaron- its more against this coaching staff that cant find a way to utilize both. Slow starts and turnovers will again be the flavor next year as that will not change with murray. We will somehow find a way to lose a game we should not and maybe still sneak into the SEC game next year- but one thing did hit home watching bama game……these coaches do not have the same drive…..yes, I think we would have won had we been there but there would have been alot more drama- e.g. interceptions, slow starts……CMR would have NEVER gone for 4 and 1 at the end of half- we would have trotted out and missed a FG…….or even worse…3 runs up the middle and give ND the ball back ….same story for us, just a different year

Alright Coach Todd Grantham, highest paid asst. coach in program history, you pissed and moaned about getting help from Bobo last year, now it is all on you. You have not stopped ANYONE’S up-the- gut run game, including Buffalo, Kentucky, ect. The defense fell considerably short of hype and expectations. Now you must do more with less. (Actually, you may have MORE, considering the stupidity of several of your starters breaking rules). Everyone will be focused on YOUR side of the ball in 2013 looking for much needed improvement, just as they were looking at Bobo’s side last year. I do not care what any of you idiot Bobo bashers say, at this point he has shown great improvement since taking over in 2006, and has passed the test. Now it’s YOUR turn Grantham, you have been an NFL coach, you have tons more worldly experience than Bobo, and it is time for it to show up. Bobo had to pull off record setting offensive play with a green OL. An OL that was under the gun for the entire 2012 preseason and beyond, by media pundits as being Georgia’s weak link. Bobo has committed his entire adult life to UGA football. He is a DGD of the highest level in my book. All of his real experience has come as a coach at UGA. He has not had the opportunity to gain a wealth of experience from the NFL, or even other major college programs. He got it all in Athens, and in my opinion, he has become a top notch OC. Coach Grantham, your job now is to produce a run stopping defense while maintaining the level of play on pass defense. Bottom line is Bobo produced a championship caliber offense with what he had to begin 2012, now it is your turn. You are either worth the money, or your not.

Ga needs to focus on the D Line. It looked as though strength and conditioning was a problem. I think they should junk the 3-4 and go back to the 4-3. Could not stop the run all year long. The lineman did not do a good job at shedding blocks and getting to the ball carrier. Hate to say it….but if you looked at the defensive lineman for Ga and compared the players to other defensive lineman… Ga’s looked out of shape. Its a shame because Big John Jenkins is an absolute load of talent….I think the coaching and strengthening could have been better. NFL Draft Advisory Committee

Alright, I think I figured out who Murray is.

Name another QB that had a great college career, amassed 3,500, 3,500, 3,845 and 3,800 yards passing in his four years. Which is higher than Murrays 3,000, 3,100 and 3,800. This guy had tremendous efficiency, 157, 162, 183 and 175 in four years. Compare it to Murray, 154, 146 and 174. This guy threw lots of TDs, 25, 39, 36, 43 as does Murray 24, 35, 36.

BTW did you know Murray is ranked 80th in completions per game? The prospects expected to go high in the NFL draft are ranked in the top 20. Anyways, I digress.

The other thing about this QB I’m comparing to Murray, he doesn’t run. He just sits back and passes.

Like Murray, he is short. 6′0″ tall.

So who was this prolific, efficient, short, non running QB? Well, he’s a QB that came into the Georgia Dome and destroyed Georgia’s supposedly greatest defense in the world. His name is Kellen Moore. He led a team that is consistently in the bottom half of the recruiting numbers to a easy victory over a team that brags about consistently being in the top 5.

So he was really nearly identical to Murray except that he was a better leader on the field.

Now what happened to Kellen Moore? He entered the 2012 DRAFT and was not drafted. He was picked up by Detroit as a free agent.

Do you think the NFL didn’t mention this to Murray when Murray said he could be the next Drew Brees. They probably laughed, said at best you could hope for 2nd or 3rd round if you have a phenomenal showing in the combine but otherwise don’t expect to be drafted and wait for a team to pick you up as a free agent.

And he decided to return to try and become a better QB so he’s drafted. Not just drafted #1, that’s not going to happen. He just wants to be drafted. Problem is he is returning to a hard schedule with the first 4 games featuring three highly ranked teams who love to run the ball and he has no defense, and even if he did, his defense was ranked 77th against the run. UGA will be worse this year, probably as bad as 2010, but he has no choice.

He’s trying to make it to the NFL.

Carry on.

South Carolina is a better football team than Georgia, has been for three years, better coach. They got to the championship game once because they had to play a tougher schedule all three years. Georgia took Alabama off their schedule and replaced it with Missouri; Alabama took Georgia off its schedule and replaced it with Texas A&M. Georgia plays a close game against Alabama who then goes and plays a team in the national championship that probably shouldn’t be in the top five in the country and that particular night shouldn’t have been in the top 10.

Murray is a guy who will work hard to improve himself and the team. Proud to have him at UGA. Hard work in the off season is what makes teams ready in September. Hope we get the same attitude from our defense to start now working hard in the weight room. We will have a really good offense with the line gaining from a year of playing together.

If Mason was better than Murray. Mason would be starting. Obviously. There is no need to wonder about this, or make up rationale. It’s really no more complicated than that. I wish Mason WAS better than Murray, because that would make him IMO the best QB we have ever had in our history.

I’d look for Mason to get plenty of PT this year. He got a lot more in 2011 than folks seem to remember, and I am sure he is much improved and more deserving now, than then.

BUT, that will greatly depend on the comfort level they have with our rebuilt defense to hold comfortable leads.

GT,
SC lost to Auburn 2 years ago. Wasn’t thebrutal schedule that cost them. It was the letdown agaisnt a lessor team. We, as you recall, demolished Auburn.
And what KEPTthem from the SECCG and SEND Georgia this year, was a common opponents within the division. UF.

Aside from taking exeption with the term “took off” as if that was our (or Alabama) decision, I have no idea what you were getting at there, nor the rambling about Alabama playing ND.

What was your point in any of that?

Hi Buckeye, You do realize your season was a mirror image of ND except they played a little bit harde schedule than you. Beating up on the Big Ten apparently is pretty easy. Sort of like being a bully in the fifth grade if you are the only kid who had a growth spirt over the summer. Walk into another class room and you will get pounded. It really amuses me how much trash you talk on this blog. Your worthless team has NEVER beaten Georgia. Gets its a$$ handed to it everytime it plays an SEC school. Your wimpy team walked away from home and home games with the Dawgs. We were really looking forward to extracting some serious revenge on Urban in the Big Ten. He can’t hide behind Tebow anymore. Even if you manage to carry your weak schedule undefeated again you will have to play a 1 loss SEC team no matter what in the NC game next year after what ND did. You also have to hope Oregon looses and the Big 12 don’t have an undefeated team. You play in the fourth best conference just ahead of the ACC. Everybody knows it. No one respencts it. The SEC will continue to crush it. You went 2 and 5 in Bowl games. Northwestern was your shining moment. What color in the sky in your world?

Does he really want to come back and lose to Bama again? I doubt they get any more gift 10 pt swings on blocked field goals turned into tds to turn a statistical blowout into a seemingly close game. If we meet them again in 2013 it will be a beatdown on the scoreboard that more closely resembles the beatdown that took place on the field in 2012.———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Just like the gift calls for Bama. McCarron gets hit by Ogletree and jumps up and crys like a baby to the Refs. gets call. Murry gets blatant HTH contact takes it like a man, yet the ref, who is 3 yds. away claims he didn’t see it.

As for the 10 point swing. Wasn’t it the mighty Tide O Line blocking on that blocked FG? Why yes, yes it was. Wasn’t it our weak underclass O Line that allowed the most yds rushing by any back on Bama this year? Why yes, yes it was.

Statistical beat down? Didn’t the mighty Tide defense give up 400 yds. and 28 points against the poor UGA Offense
Statistical beat down? Rushing yes, passing no.

Our entire line will be back. Bamas, not as many.
This is not a response to Bama. fans, many who are my friends and whom I respect. They realize what a damn tough, close game it was.

Consensus: Urban Meyer is a jerk!! Not a news flash down here in the South. Saw analysis panel on ESPN. One guy said he still doesn’t think Ala. is the best team. Wellllll….they promoted ND into the championship game proclaiming them the champion before they played the game. ND’s butt will be sore until July from getting knocked on it by the O-Line of Ala. These self anoited experts think they can turn ND into a champion with their mouth. They want them back in the limelight so bad. ND has not been significant in 25 years. Paul Crane on CSS said ND hand picks their schedule and shouldn’t be considered in the national rankings. 10 of the 12 teams ND played lost 5 games. If that ND team played in the SEC they would have lost 5 games. They play Army and Navy every year that’s like G Tech playing Middle Tenn. State(No wait..better not count that one). ND has signed a contract with the ACC in all sports except football. However they agreed to play 5 ACC teams each year. Let’s see…that’s 2 wins over Army and Navy every year, and 5 wins over ACC handpicked teams. That’s 7 wins practically guaranteed before they ever hit the field. Throw in 5 more hand picked teams(and no conference championship game to worry about) and they are 12-0 again with all of the media screaming they are No. 1. They were as much of an embarrassment as Northern Ill. playing FSU in a BCS game. Now you know how close Ga. came to being the National Champion. After the way McCarron picked their secondary apart and Murray & Ga.’s running game, the result for ND would have been the same. As a matter of fact, there were at least 5 teams in the SEC that would have beaten ND. I don’t like ND but I felt sorry for Te’o and their defense. You could see the dispair and frustration in their eyes in the first half. You shouldn’t have one team in a championship game so overmatched and the other that has to call off the dogs to prevent further humiliation of their opponent.
The analysts talk about Oregon with all of that speed and high scoring. What Oregon would find out in the SEC is that speed doesn’t do much good if you can’t get past the line of scrimmage. Stanford would have been a better representative.

I said the whole season he needed to run more. While I believe all qb’s should be pass first, if they can run they should. I remember in the bowl game murray threw a pass away when he was scrambling to the sideline and could’ve easily picked up 5 yards and stepped out instead. Those are the kind of runs he needs to be making, smart/safe runs.

As for mason, I feel bad for the guy but there is always that possibility. When murray leaves mason has to be much better then the other backups. If the other guys are on the same level as him, or if he is only slightly better, it would be to UGA’s benefit to start a younger guy and let him start getting his playing time. Notre Dame is overated

January 9th, 2013
1:01 pm

So is the SEC.

Alabama’s Signature Win is over LSU and LSU loses to an ACC school in their bowl game.
Georgia’s Signature Win is over Florida and UF loses to a Big East school in their bowl game.

Florida’s only loss came to UGA, but Florida gave that game to UGA by giving the Bulldogs SIX TURNOVERS. Louisville totally stomped Florida and did not need any turnover help.

Likewise LSU got stomped by Clemson. Clemson put up 445 yards on LSU which is more than Double the yards LSU had. No one else in the SEC even came close to dominating the yardage game like this on LSU.

What did UGA and BAMA have in common…. they both were smiled upon by the scheduling Gods and did not have to play any of the top 3 teams on the other side of the division.

Texas A&M is actually the best team in the SEC, but because their schedule was much tougher than BAMA or UGA’s, they did not get to go the the SECCG.

Having 14 teams in the SEC naturally allows more room for better teams to beat up on the cupcakes. Hey UGA Fans…look at this …..

UGA played ONLY 1 Top Ten Team in the Regular Season
Missouri played 5 Top Ten Teams in the Regular Season

The biggest lack of parity in the SEC is the scheduling and UGA has been blessed with the easiest schedule in the SEC the last 2 years.

Notre Dame was overated because the squeeked by many teams this year and you are not going to win a BCS Championship game with a RS Freshman QB.

Clemson held LSU to its lowest yardage output of the season and put up 230 MORE yards than LSU.

You are also lucky that the Gamecocks did not loose…. they had to pull that one out of their arse to win at the end.

This is the same Gamecocks team that totally embarrassed the bulldogs (even worse than Bama embarrassed the Golden Domers).

Notre Dame is overrated- your username is correct, they are way overrated. As is Mante Teo. The SEC is not judged by certain teams individual schedules on a given year. THey are judged by their recruiting classes, their bodies of work, number of players drafted, coaches, and championships. No other conference in the country can hold a candle to the SEC and it is said on every sports talk radio station, every show on ESPN, etc. Hell, Chris Fowler and Desmond Howard admitted on air that the NC was played in December in Atl.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but every year the polls, sportswriters, analysts, and radio personalities all agree. The SEC is THE conference in college football.

Rampdawg do you watch games- USC whipped UGA…what is your point? UF was whipped by Louisville, do you honestly think Louisvile is a better team than UF? The same UF that played 4 or 5 top 10 teams this year beating them all but UGA.

Games can be won and won big if there is an explosive play early in the game. THe UGA defender missed a sure int to start the game against USC. How would that gave have been different if he makes that pick? How would the Louisville game have been different if UF doesn’t throw a pick 6 on the first play?

Momentum is hard to stop. A team that has and is firing on all cylinders is almost impossible to stop.

Look at the SF Giants and their 2 recent WS rings. They were not the best team in baseball those years, not even close. THe NY Giants were not the best team in the NFL either year that they won the Super Bowl. They got hot at the right time and were able to keep their momentum going.

Yea…. maybe the SEC should just get rid of the SEC-East… as the SEC-W has 5 of those. If it weren’t for UF, the SEC east would have 0. Bama is good and can beat anybody given more than a week to prepare….

How does an average Texas A&M come in from outside the SEC and dominate with a 3* recruit?

All I am saying is that a 1 loss SEC team will always be placed higher than a Non-SEC team due to perception…. so teams like Oregon get left out if they slip up.

TA&M or LSU and FL would have been in the SECCG if it weren’t for the scheduling that was mentioned earlier… but the refusal of the SEC to add more conference games despite having 14 members now is the reason the SEC benefits.

When you only play 2 out of 7 teams on the other side of the division…. it makes for cupcake city for many teams each year.

Alabama and UGA both enjoyed cupcake city in the SEC this year…. it was a Little Debbie Diet.

Did you notice that the SEC was favored to win every one of their bowl games?
Would have loved to see the SEC face some team with an offense (teams like Oregon, Stanford, etc…).

2 out of the top 4 SEC teams did face a team with an offense and both of them lost. Just a shame the Rose Bowl has its lock.

I guarantee you this…the SEC will not dominate the 4 team playoff.

Also Hunker Down… how many NC’s do the Bulldogs have of those 7? Seems like UGA is just living off the scraps from the SEC perception.

As to the championship talk, let’s be real.

Defense wins championship, and UGA defense is a big question mark after losing tons of talents to the NFL.

So, be honest with yourselves, and put that talk aside for awhile before you can judge your D on the field.

Notre dame is overrated,(GT fan trolling) , What an Idiot, seriously Florida “gave ” georgia 6 turnovers?
So the Georgia defense was just standing there and the Florida players handed them the ball? Clemson stomped LSU ? If winning by a point is stomping how would you describe South Carolinas beating Clemson 27-17 or Floridas win over FSU or 42-10?
No one else in the SEC even came close to dominating the yardage game like this on LSU. This comment exposes you as a tech fan,in the SEC its the points on the scoreboard that count Ole Miss scored more points (35) and had more yardage vs LSU than Clemson and Arkansas did the best Clemson imitation they had 463 yards of offense vs LSU but only scored 13 points.

What’s with this all this feeling sorry for Mason. How is that even an issue? He is one player of 100. Beat out the man in front of you, and the debate is over. Since when does a back up QB deserve more of a “get his chance” than a back up LB, or a back up safety?

For a fan base that is always so uber sensitive about “loyalty” and “best man on the field”, some folks seem to have taken a 180 on this situation. As IF Hutson Mason is somehow deeded the role of starter at some point? That they “owe” it to him now, becasue he didn’t quit last year?

I doubt very seriously HE sees it that way. I’d say his comments are perfectly fine and understandable. He would be “disapointed” not to be a starter. Obviously. You would hope so. So far he has handled himself very admirably.

Reality Check for WDE

January 9th, 2013
2:08 pm

Defense does win Championships… that is what the SEC is known for. While I agree that we almost beat Alabama, it was because we got turnovers worth 17-24 points on the board and Alabama only got 3 points from us on turnovers.

Everyone is hung up on that one play, but remember, Saban made the same timeout mistake going into halftime …. do you honestly think that Alabama would not have been able to score from the 3 on 1st and goal.

Reality Check is we were lucky to be even close and BAMA would beat us 9 times out of 10 games played.

Only 2 teams in the SEC had offenses this year… UGA and the Aggies…. the rest won with Defense and when you look at our history of SEC success, it is Line Play and Defense.

Which brings us back to Alphare’s point…. our Defense gave up 300+ yards of RUSHING in 3 out of the last 4 games of the season (not counting 240 to Nebraska). For us to have so many NFL starters on the team this year… you have to think that was a bit of underachievement.

What would have happened if we were to have held Bama under 200 yards rushing…. our defense gave up more rushing yards to Bama than any other team on Bama’s schedule this year.

Defense wins championships and I have been less than impressed with Grantham.

Alphare, who’s talking “championship?”

If any real UGA fan does, it’s a fan who talks it every year, you know, somebody like Goldenrod, who predicts Tech beating UGA. Every year.

EVERY program has a few enthusiastic fans who let their mouths overload their asses.

It’s not uncommon – check Notre Dame blogs right now – they barely lost Monday night and they will definitly win next season.

Euphoria is not just limited to UGA football fans – hell I even remember a bunch of you boys on here 3 years ago, before the UGA game, pondering if your 10-1 Jackets would get in the Big Game.

Aagainst ranked teams, Murray always gets worse each year in accuracy and passing efficiency.

There is no “continuing to get better”. He never improves. He always “continues to get worse” in accuracy and passing effiency against ranked teams.

And the team win the East, and lost in the SEC Championship in BOTH 2011 AND 2012, no improvement, no “continuing to get better”, just staying where UGA was in 2011.

Same result, all 3 years, no sec championship for all 3 years since Murray took over.

Murray played poorly against all teams that ended up top 20 in the ap poll, played terrible against South Catrolina, Florida, and Alabama.

What an idiot, name a QB that had a great game against Bama other than JM, Murray was 18-31 281 yards 1 int and 1 td. McCarron against the georgia defense was 13-21 161 yards 1 td and 1 int. If you thinks that’s bad against the best defense in America you know nothing. By the way JM only had 253 yards passing vs Bama and 171 yards passing vs FL. a whopping 25 more yards than Murray had vs UF.. Against South Carolina it wasn’t Murray having a bad day it was Georgia having a bad game. The comment he never improves is asinine 3893 yards passing ,65% completion %, 36 TD and only 10 interceptions.

Mason already tried being better than Murray in practice, he won the MVP award back in April, had the best Spring on the team. Mason also has tried being better in Spring games, as he’s bested Murray in passer efficiency ranking son every Spring game. Mason also tried besting Murray in regular seaosn games, he beat Murray in passer efficiency in every regular season game where both played. Mason also tried besting Murray in the SEC Championship against LSU beating Murray in passer efficiency. Mason has tried everything, won everything, and continues to ride the bench.

On the other hand, Murray is 1-11 against teams that finish top 20 in the AP Poll. I think Murray finished near the bottom of the SEC in sacks, interceptions, accuracy and passer efficiency, against rnked teams.

Areas Murray can work on:
1- Sacks, he gets sacked 200-300% more than Joe Cox & Matthew Stafford did
2- Accuracy, Murray finished ranked 90th in accuracy vs. ranked teams, nobody was worse in the SEC
3- Wins vs top 20 teams, Murray is now 1-11 vs. teams that finish top 20 in the AP Poll. He has played poorly in 11 of those 12 games.
4- tipped balls–cost UGA a National Championship with his tipped pass against Bama to end the game, needs to look off receivers, put more air under the ball, and try some creative ideas to throw over big defensive lineman since he’s so short.
5- Interceptions–the guy has averaged 11 interceptions per season at UGA, that’s absolutely HORRENDOUS.
6- Beating top SEC teams like LSU, Alabama, South Carolina.
7- Leadership- teams under his leadership lose the big game 90% of the time. I know the kid spend a lot of time by himself in a room looking at video, but is that leadership? Is it working?

Mettenberger & Manizel, both 1st year starters, were much more accurate (70-77%) than Murray (54%) and both threw no interceptions compared to 3 year starter Aaron Murray who completed 54% and threw an interception.

UGA had Clemson on the road and then South Carolina at Athens in games 1 and 2. South Carolina defense will be strong again with Clowney back to chase down Murray and Murray has not beaten South Carolina yet. Spurrier offense will be better too and I doubt Murray will win in his 4th try plus Clemson might win in the opener and then UGA would be 0-2.

A Murray and the offense scored:

no points in the first 58 minutes of the game against South Carolina

7 points on sideways pass and long run against Florida. Defense responsible for the other 10

21 points against Alabama for our offense, 7 points for the Defense against Alabama

Against the only 3 top tier teams we played in 2012: A Murray’s leadership scored a grand total of 28 points in 12 quarters of football. The defense scored 17.

A Murray sucks and it is time to move on without him. No way Hutson Mason is worse than A Murray.

A lot of you bloggers out there(Mongoose, etc) seem to be better informed than I am. I didn’t know Murray called his own plays. I always thought the offensive coordinator called the play and Murray just executed them. Boy, am I dumb!!!
As far as Manziel’s game against Bama….I don’t think he did so well in the second half after Bama realized they had underestimated him. That won’t happen again. Look for more of that in 2013. Defenses will be better informed and will be geared to stop him from getting out of the pocket. Remember Tebow? When they stopped him from running he couldn’t hit his receivers. He has the same problem in the pros. A player like Manziel….he likes to run, he wants to run, that’s his first thought when he gets the ball in his hands. He’s not thinking about his receivers in pass routes. He wants to buy them time to get open with his feet. 4 seconds maybe 5 in the pocket and he wastes 2 of those seconds thinking about running. Any receiver can get open in 6 or 7 seconds and that’s why he was successful. He bought them that additional time to get open by scrambling and he is accurate on the run. Keep him in the pocket and see what happens. You will find out if he’s great…or average.
