Murray bypasses NFL draft to stay at UGA (updated w/ Richt reaction)

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray ended the speculation Sunday night about whether he’s staying in school or going to the NFL. He’s staying, Murray announced via Twitter.

“Blessed to be the QB for the Dawgs, not ready to leave just yet,” Murray tweeted to his 64,000-plus followers. “Time to get back to work & help lead this team to a championship.”

Murray could not be immediately reached for further comment, and UGA made no official announcement of his decision. (UPDATE: Georgia coach Mark Richt reacted to Murray’s decision in a statement Monday morning: “I’m certainly pleased that after weighing his options Aaron has decided to remain at Georgia for his senior year. His leadership and productivity have been tremendous during what has been an outstanding career. This is great for Aaron and great for Georgia.”)

A three-year starter for the Bulldogs, Murray had been weighing whether to return for his final season of college eligibility or to enter the 2013 NFL draft.

He said previously that the NFL’s underclassmen advisory committee informed him he likely would be a second or third-round pick if he entered the draft.

Murray graduated from UGA last spring with a degree in psychology, and he enrolled in a graduate program in industrial-organizational psychology in the fall.

He is the first quarterback in SEC history to pass for more than 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. This past season, he passed for 3,893 yards and 36 touchdowns. In Georgia’s Capital One Bowl victory over Nebraska, he passed for 427 yards and five touchdowns. He leads the nation in pass efficiency rating for the 2012 season, just ahead of Alabama’s AJ McCarron, who plays in the BCS title game Monday night.

Murray has led Georgia to back-to-back SEC Eastern Division titles, although the Bulldogs lost in the SEC Championship game both times.

Murray’s return is a boon for the 2013 Georgia team, which expects to return all but two starters – receivers Tavarres King and Marlon Brown – from an offense that averaged 37.8 points per game.

Mark my words, the 2013 Georgia defense will give up less yards per game than the 2012 defense. Great players on defense this year, but they didn’t play well as a unit. Sorry to see JJ go, but glad to see AO and BO leave.

Game Changer, it is a weak QB class this year, so he would probably be the 6th or 7th QB taken. He got a 2nd – 3rd grade back from the NFL. And “UGA in SC,” Murray absolutely destroyed the #1 ranked pass defense (Nebraska). Wanting Mason to take over when we play Clemson, SC, and LSU in the 1st 5 games is not good logic.

Ever noticed how lethal Murray is when he has a little time to throw? The entire O-Line is coming back next year (plus we will add Laremy Tunsil), so Murrray should have plenty of time to throw.

MT, Please share with us your insight on Murray’s activities “on and off the field” to use your words. No, on second thought please don’t. Just go away. The same people who told me 6 weeks ago that he wouldn’t be going pro have also told me that no one, and I mean no one, works harder than Murray. A very trusted source told me that 3 summers ago every morning while driving to work at 6:30 a.m. in Athens he saw Murray working out alone on the practice fields at UGA. That certainly sounds like an off the field problem if I do say so myself. I also have it on good authority that his roommates go out and party like normal college kids and he stays home and watches film. Yeah, that is a terrible off the field activity. I really don’t know who you are or what your angle is but Aaron Murray isn’t the problem in your life. It is you. You are obviously miserable and want to take it out on innocent kids. Shame on you. Murray is a credit to our school. Glad he is coming back. Anyone on here who is not happy knows nothing about football. Bobo is also a really good OC. Look at how our offense progressed over the year. Basically having to rely on untested freshmen in the backfield and a line that was questionable at the start of the season he did a great job of play calling. Coach Friend deserves a big hand from all of us. He did what Searles could never do with the raw talent he had. Now that we have a DL coach that seems to be able to teach players how to stop the run we should be better next year. Mark this down we will be a better defense in 2013. There is enough talent on defense with the new recruits coming to be stronger and quicker. You are going to see some really good recruits sign in February. A couple that may surprise some of you.

I have higher hopes in our opening day defense than the one we had all this year with the ” superstars” on it. The new d is going to be young guys that are force to play hard together…..they have no delusions of grandeur and NFL agents whispering in their ear all year. Murray has a 18% win record against teams that finish top 25. He’s 2 wins, 11 losses.

You got 4 of those guys on the 2013 schedule in Clemson, South Carolina, LSU, and Florida.

So with Murray’s 18% record there that means 3-4 losses to the above 4 top 25 teams.

Should Georgia get back to the SEC Championship, Murray has an 0% win record there, 0 wins, 2 losses.

Should Georgia get back to a Bowl game, Murray has a 33% win record there, so UGA looking at an 8-5 or 9-4 season.

Let Murray start against UNRANKED teams, where he wins so many games.

Let Mason start against the RANKED teams, since Murray loses 82% of those games.

Mason could win at least 2 of those 4 games against RANKED teams, where murray can’t win more than 1 with his 18% win %.

I’m really glad to see this, I think murray really improved this year and can’t wait to see this offense. I do have my doubts about mason ever being a starting UGA quarterback now. Do you really want to have a new starter who is a fifth year senior? AM did is not the problem. Our D cost us the NC. The defense could not stop the run all year. Defense wins ball games. Bobo abandoned the run against SC. With Murray I think we are are a realistic 9 or 10 win team. Without Murray I think we would have been a 7 or 8 win team. We have to many holes on D to fill and not enough players with real experience to just slot in. That is what happens when you end the season with 68 on scholarship and not 80-85. This is a huge boost for us. We may have to win a bunch of shoot outs but with 10 starters back on a VERY high octane offense, worrying about a new QB is one less big concern. Go Dawgs. GATA!

@ mgdawg, Mason has been told by the staff that he is the starter when Murray leaves. No QB on campus (including Brice Ramsey who is enrolled now) is anywhere close to Mason. Lemay is nowhere near being ready and Ramsey will need a couple years to get acclemated to a pro style offense. Ramsey will be the 2015 starter, barring someone coming in in the next couple of years and taking the job.

I’m not unhappy that Murray is coming back. I’m a little disappointed for Mason and I think he will transfer to a Div. 2 school. He’s a talent and deserves to play. I’m not so sure AM is staying because of loyalty, I think it’s because he wasn’t rated as high in the draft as he thought he might be. AM is intelligent and a talent with a good arm. He’s intelligent enough to know that even if he comes back and doesn’t have a great year he will still be in the same position in the draft next year that he is now. The only problem is injury could cost him millions, but unlike a lot of jocks, he has an education to fall back on if that happens.

He may not have been the greatest quarterback in BIG games but he showed us he can take beat a top-ranked team in the regular, also being the most hated team of UGA, and can take on a defending national title team in the SEC Championship and only falling short by 5 yards. I believe Murray knows he is capable of winning the big ones and made the right decision by staying with UGA having unfinished business to take care of. Watch out UGA fans we still have a chance for not only taking over the SEC title but also having the ability to get back to another opportunity of playing in the national title game next year. UGA was ONE play away from going to the NC THIS year with an AVG defense with NO DEPTH….and you have a problem with coaches?!!! Do you have baby baboon brains in your head?! Or is it just empty? Or are you young and dumb with little time on this planet? Or are you just a hatin Tech fan? I have been watcing UGA football since before you were born. Since 1980. I am not young nor senile. I am in my mid 40’s. Mark Richt WILL get it done. Took Saban 11 years and he is the king right? Took Dooley 17 years. Took the Bear 18 years. I know you are probably too young and dumb to know but the Bear wa Paul Bear Bryant, considered the best coach in college football history. Took him 18 years of being a head coach to win his first NC….he didnt stop there! You idiots would have fired him! And MOST ALL OTHERS BECAUSE MOST TAKE AT LEAST 14-15 YEARS TO WIN THEIR FIRST NC! RICHT HAS ONE OFTHE BEST RECORDS IN HISTORY FOR FIRST 12 YEARS OF COACHING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL!

HE WILL GET IT DONE AND WHEN HE DOES YOU BETTER NOT STOP HATIN AND CHEER NOR ENJOY IT FOR A SECOND BUT INSTEAD GRAB A LARGE SPOON AND START SHOVELING IN ALL THE CROW YOU GOT COMING! SHAME ON ANY OF YOU HATIN ON UGA COACHES! UGA IS FAR BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOUR CHEERS AND CERTAINLY YOUR JEERS AFTER TAKING A TEAM WITH AN UNDERACHIEVEING ALLSTAR DEFENSE ONE PLAY FROM THE BIGGEST GAME POSSIBLE! NOT COACHES FAULT. ALLSTAR TEAMS NEARLY ALWASY UNDERACHIEVE BECAUSE THEY DONT PLAY AS ONE….LOOK AT PHILADELPHIA EAGLES THE LAST 2 YEARS. THE 2011 SUPER BOWL TROPHY WAS GIVEN TO THEM BEFORE THE SEASON EVEN STARTED AFTER ALL THEIR FREE AGENT ADDITIONS TO AN ALREADY GOOD TEAM AND THEY….SUCKED. SEEN IT 100 TIMES THROUGH MY YEARS. It’s great to have Murray back. He’s just now learning how to play in the big games. With Gurshall and some new receivers who played great in the bowl we’ll make a run at the National Title. I was really hoping he would go pro. Murray just doesn’t have the “it” factor and I will not forgive him for the decision he made at the end of the SEC championship. Columbus dawg it is not baby baboon brains that fill the morons brains. It has to be adult baboon brains. Baby baboon brains wouldn’t have time to get that dumb yet. Case in point, the two above me.

Murray has just thrown for 3000 yards three years in a row, something no one named Manning ever did. Yet he is inferior, in this guys opinion to a QB who seems like he might make a good player but has never won a game against ANYONE and another QB who can’t even read the hand signals from the sideline. Anyone ever notice that EVERY play the LeMay runs has to be whispered n his ear on the sidelines? The walk on Welch goes in before LeMay because he does better on the test every week than LeMay. And these are superior QB’s to Murray?? REALLY???

The the brain scientist above me says Murray “just doesn’t have the ‘it’ factor.” But someone who has “shown promise” does? REALLY????

I’d have to say without a doubt it’s gotta be adult baboon brains.

The usual idiot trolls on this and other blogs constantly making fools of themselves, only wish the had half as much going for them, as young Mr. Murray does. By the end of 2013, he will own every SEC passing record of significance and will be in the UGA hall of fame, when he finally leaves this school. Pretty uneducated move by Murray. He will be losing many on his OL and the UGA defense. That leaves him little room for error. UGA’s season will be over before October next year.

If Murray would have left, he would have been a top QB in this draft. There are very few good QBs in this draft, and several top pick teams need a QB. He lost millions with this decision. Que the Matt Barkley “We have unfinished business” speech………..

RoJo

January 7th, 2013

Here’s the way MOST EVERY UGA fan sees it.

With Murray OR HUTSON MASON, you’ll beat the bad teams with losing records and get 8 wins per year.

But when you play ranked teams, Murray willl lose 80%+, and if you make it to the SEC Championship, Murray’s 0-2, and in Bowl games, Murray is 1-2.

Against teams that finish top 25, Murray has one of the worst records over 3 seasons in the nation at 2-11.

With Hutson Mason as starter, can Mason really go ANY WORSE than
2-11 losing 82% vs. teams that end up top 25
WINLESS 0-2 in SEC Championships
AND 1-2 in Bowl games?

Doubtful, that’s VERY hard to do to LOSE 82% OF THE GAMES against good teams like Murray does. You have to ALMOST EVERYTHING WRONG to LOSE 82% of your starts against teams that finish top 25.

Really ANY QB, EXCEPT AARON MURRAY, WOULD DO BETTER THAN AN 18% win % AGAINST TEAMS THAT FINISH TOP 25, Mason, Lemay, Bauta, Ramsey, ALL would be BETTER than an 18% win %.

MURRAY GIVES YOU THE BEST CHANCE TO LOSE, in BIG GAMES, than ANY QB on the UGA ROSTER.

That’s a fact. As in the 18% career win %.

In Murray’s most RECENT GAME, as a 3RD YEAR STARTER, Murray threw 2 interceptions in the first quarter, one for a returned touchdown vs. Nebraska.

Against Alabama, Murray failed to spike the ball at the end of the game and threw a pass to the wrong guy as time expeired.

Against Florida, Murray had 3 turnovers.

Against South Carolina, Murray’s offense only generated 7 points in the game.

That’s all THIS PAST SEASON with 3 years experience.

5 YEAR PERIODS FOR UGA!

2001-2006-2011 have been the improving & rebuilding years for Georgia, and we improve & grow as a team and set goals for next season!

2002-2007-2012 have been the best years for Georgia as long CMR has been the coach, and one loss that takes us out of the NC game!

2003-2008-possibly 2013 are the years that we still have talent left on the team, however, our defense and/or offense slacks off and our shoulda woulda coulda season turns into a nightmare, but I believe 2013 season will be a blessed year for the dawgs though! The 5 years trend stops here!

You don’t have to look far in the SEC to find QB’s better than Murray, against teams that finish top 25.

Connor Shaw, AJ McCarron, Zach Mettenberger, Johnny Manziel

All 4 had AT LEAST 2 wins against teams that finished in the top 25 in their 1ST YEAR AS A STARTER, while Murray only had 2 wins vs teams that finish top 25, in 3 YEARS!

Murray is the 5th best SEC Qb against teams that finish in the top 25.

AMurray is a good kid but honestly little if any place for him to go other than return to UGA.

When it came time for brass tacks, only the desperate NFL teams would have drafted an average sized QB like Murray who simply can not get over the turnover bug. Sure Murray was bailed out of many of his more egegious mistakes, but that is small comfort to NFL teams where teams simply have NO room for such repeated mistakes.

Without the whitewashing play by JJones in the UF game Murray’s horrid play would have had the UGA fans at his throat. People easily forget just how awful Murray was during that debacle.

Aaron Murray is great for the University of Georgia and the students and University of Georgia is great for Aaron Murray. The few lunatics are clueless. The coaches and staff as well as the Unvesity does a great job at assimilating the athletes into the academic environment at Georgia. This is exciting.

Manziel is a heck of a QB and what he did against Bammer is very noteworthy. I cannot say the same thing about Mettenburger. And when Mettenburger needed to make plays against Bammer AND Clemson, he flopped royally, worse than anything Murray ha sdone the last 2 years In other words don’t mention Mettenburger in the same sentence as Murray or esp. Manziel. Murray and Manziel will make the NFL. Mettenberger won’t!

RoJo

Mettenberger and Manziel BOTH won more games against teasm that finished in the top 25 in their rookie years as a starter, than Murray has in 3 years.

Alabama is ranked 73rd in pass defense against ranked teams, Mettenberger and Manziel wern’t intimidated and played their best game, Murray did not play his best game.

Glad you brought up the other NCAA teams, 89 QB’s rank better than Murray nationally, in accuracy, against ranked teams.

About 75% of all NCAA Qb’s ranked better than Murray.

I’m sure if you polled top 25 teams, and asked them if they’d be excited about facing a QB, like Murray, who had a 2-11 record against teams that finish top 25, all would be very excited.

JB

I’m sure if you polled all 119 teams, and asked them if they preferred to play a QB with a LOWER pass efficiency, or a higfher pass efficiency, most would say they’d prefer to play the QB with the lower pass efficiency.

Mason’s pass efficiency has been higher than Murray’s in EVERY SINGLE GAME they’ve ever both played in.

Looks like I need to add RoJo to my tutoring list. Need to work on some basic logic. To be kind, I will assume RoJo has not been following football that long. No one would put much stock in spring game performances, otherwise. I am NOT saying Mason is not a good quarterback. I think he is. But to think he is better than Murray at this point is ridiculous.

Let’s apply some logic to his claim that in every game, Mason has a higher pass efficiency rating than Murray. Too many variables to go by that standard- for one thing Mason has always been in a game in mop-up time, and not when the game is on the line.

Let’s take RoJo’s logic a bit further. Orwin Smith has a much higher yards per carry average than Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, and Adrian Peterson. No doubt that makes Orwin a better back, right?

I didn’t bring up Hutson Mason, I just responded to others who say Murray is better, which, in any head to head match up, Spring game or regular season, or post season, Mason ALWAYS has a HIGHER PASSING EFFICIENCY RATING than Murray.

Is it common sense to continue to start a QB like Murray who is 2-11 record vs teams that finish top 25? That means you’ll have an 82% chance of losing?

Mel Kiper said in an ESPN article Murray should return for his Sr year, don’t think Kiper is high on Murray either. Murray will have to do a LOT MORE to impress the 2 ESPN experts in 2013, doing the same old stuff Murray’s done for 3 years, won’t impress the 2 ESPN experts. Murray’s height is a major issue, and you saw at the end of the Alabama game what NFL coaches feared, a tipped pass from an undersized Qb leading to a loss in a big game.

Murray cannot LEAD his team to enough victories in big games. He just doesn’t get the job done.

Murray hasn’t won enough big games to EARN HIS RIGHT TO LEAD THE TEAM. Just because richt says Murray is the leader, means nothing to players. Murray has to EARN it by winning more games and playing better in the big games. After 3 years of starting 40 games, all Murray has to show for it in Bowl games, Championship games, and 13 games against teams that finished in the top 25, is 2 LOUSY WINS. And Murray played TERRIBLE in one of those wins (Florida) and needed 6 turnovers by his defenses to bail out his 3 turnovers. That doesn’t EANR TRUST OR CONFIDENCE. Neither does spending 10,000 hours in a room by himself studying game film, but not being able to translate the study to WINS. Whatever Murray is doing, is NOT WORKING.

UGA has a legit shot at the National Championship next year now. Murray and this offense will hopefully produce the same #’s next year as this year. A better Murray, better Gurley and Marshall, better O-Line, and Mitchell & Conley on the outside with Bennett Rome and Lynch working the middle of the field this offense will be the best in the SEC.

I also think our defense will be a lot more consistent next year as a collective unit. Hopefully Geathers will stay so our D-Line will have experience. But our young guys will step up and even if we lose one of the first three it is ok because we can handle loses early in the year and make a run and hopefully beat Alabama in an SEC rematch later this year, getting us to the National championship.

I seriously think Murray will shake the”top 25 disappearing act” and get us in the NC game.

Some of you people are such idiots. Look say what you want, but Murray has done something a lot of great SEC QBs before him couldn’t do – avg 3000yds a season for 3 yrs.
Neither Manning did it, Heisman winner Danny Wuerfuel didn’t do it,
Also, everyone with any football acumen knows, the QB gets too much credit for wins, too much blame for losses.
A. Murray is not the reason we lost to Bama. Really what hurt us was the missed field goal early in the game. You simply can not leave points on the field against a team like Bama. We make that field goal, we’re down by one, ground the ball and kick a field goal that basically would have been the length of an extra point. If the defense doesn’t give up the long TD pass, My point is not to make if this if that excuses, but to simply say, you can’t say he didn’t show up in that game. He showed up against FL and threw for 427 and 5 TDs (Cap One Bowl record) against the #1 pass defense in the country. You can say he hadn’t showed up in some big games earlier in his career, which people seem to forget he was a freshman and sophmore for, but with the exception of the SC game he performed very well this season. Oh and let’s not forget he lost his #1 WR in freak accident during practice on Thursday before the SC game. His timing with the WRs was off not to mention the O-line got man-handled.
Anyone who doesn’t think A.Murray coming back this season is a good thing is just stupid. I can’t believe some of you would honestly want to trade his 3yrs of experience for a kid who’s looked good in spring games and limited mop up duty. unbelieveable.

Say what you will, but when every QB in the SEC, finishes with better accuracy than Aaron Murray against ranked teams, something’s wrong.

I think it’s one of the reasons UGA is 2-11 vs teams that finish top 25.

Jarivs Jones made the team better this year and that led to the Florida win. The 6 turnovers by the defense won that game, Murray had FAR LESS to do with the win compared to Jarvis Jones.

Ogletree did the same thing against Nebraska. The forced fumble, and recovery by Ogletree, was cited by Nebraska players, as the key to their loss.

The kid dedicated himself in the off-season and came back a better player. his numbers against SC and FL were not good, but he turned it around against BAMA and NEB. If he puts forth the same focus this off season, he can lead UGA back to the SEC Championship game. If he improves ( and the defense helps out) then UGA has a chance to play for it all. IF, and that is a huge IF, UGA does win it all, then Conner Norman gets his number retired.

While I’m just as disappointed that UGA hasn’t won an SEC championship/National Championship, it’s foolish to try to justify an argument for a backup qb over a 3 (soon to be 4) year starter). Not to mention the fact that Aaron Murray has set SEC records (3 consecutive 3,000 + yards, 90 td passes) and led UGA to consecutive SEC east champions.

We all want UGA to win every game and play for a NC every year, but that’s not realistic.
All you can do is hope that you are in the discussion at the end of each season.

This is huge for the Dawgs and all those who believe that the good guys don’t finish last. I have the utmost respect for Murray and Richt. Not just what they bring to the field but how they carry themselves as human beings. I know there are a lot of “fans” who want to throw these guys under the bus anytime there is the slightest wrinkle in the system but I would rather be 5 yards short of a national championship than hold a crystal ball led by some A-Hole (Spurrier) or an abusive psychopath (Muschamp). Sorry you feel that Murray’s #14 SEC ranking in accuracy vs ranked teams is far better than any SEC QB. It’s far WORSE than any SEC QB.

Sorry you feel that Hutson Mason’s HIGHER PASSING EFFICIENCY ratings in any public game: pre season, season, and post season, means Murray is better. Sorry you disagree with teammates, and coaches, who all say Mason could step on the field and start right now.

Your feelings are incorrect.

Who said I blamed Murray for all 13 losses against teams that finished top 25? I just said Auburn 2010 wasn’t Murray’s fault.

But I did say Murray didn’t play great in the other 12 losses, and he had a MAJOR NEGATIVE IMPACT in the other 12 losses against teams that finished in the top 25.

And I did say, in the only 2 WINS against teams that finished in the top 25, the DEFENSE played great against Florida forcing 6 turnovers especially Jarvis Jones, and then against Nebraska, the Nebraska players cited Ogletree forcing a late game changing turnover as to why they lost, that play broke their will.

Take heed to what Steve Spurrier said this year. “Georgia scores real fast”. With our young and inexperienced defense next year the offense needs to be ball controling and help keep the defense off the field and fresh. Compare the time of possession of the offenses of the great defenses of the past. Quick scores puts the defense back on the field to quickly especially in the September heat of the battle. The games that the Ga defense looked bad were the ones the offense had a lower time of possession. I am not saying do not score when you can just control the ball and the clock to keep the defense fresh. Spurrier was right when we played SC.

Why do you want to blame Murray for every one of those losses to top 25 teams. Wins are a team effort just like loses. For example I remember at least two and there was probably more top 25 losses that was because we had an All American kicker who lost his confidence and couldn’t make easy field goal kicks. Then in 2012 made the Pro Bowl he was so good in his first year in the Pro’s.
The first year that Murray was Quarterback Grantham had just changed the Defense to the 3-4 . I guess that didn’t have anything to do with any of those losses.
Murray has improved every year and is one of the best Quarterback’s in college football.
Someone compared Murray staying to Barkley at Southern Cal in 2012. Big mistake for Barkley because there was no way with the Scholarship restrictions that Southern Cal has because of NCAA penalties that they were going to be able to finish with less than 4 losses let alone the National Championship. Even Alabama needs Depth to be able to compete.
Murray has gotten better every year and if he can do better in 2013 he will probably come close if not win the Heisman.

Regular season – in mop up duty AFTER A.Murray and Co. have broken the other team’s will
Post season – not sure what you’re talking about here, don’t know when/if Mason has gotten in much if at all in bowl games or SEC Championship game
Spring practice -hold on a second…bwahahahahahahahaha!!!! hahahaha!! ok – so RoJo so you underdstand, the way spring scrimages work is this: 1-Offense (Murray’s team) & 2-Defense goes against 2-Offense(Mason’s team) & 1-Defense. So Murray’s unit is vs 1 Def, Mason is vs 2 Def.

So if you think all that makes Mason a better QB than Murray then so be it. Nothing anyone on this board says will change your mind, just like nothing you say will change ours.
You probably still believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy as well .

Still waiting on anyone to show me one good reason why Aaron Murray has EARNED the right to ever start another game team that finishes in the top 25 when he’s only played well once in 2010 against Auburn, and has stunk it up the other 11 games?

If Spring games don’t matter, why play them and why keep stats, and why does it matter to you that Mason beats Murray in the Spring games, if it doesn’t matter?

Mop up stats are read the same way by a computer, they all count, funny these same people say Murray is ranked No 1 in pass efficiency ( against UNRANKED TEAMS). He’s ranked #45 against RANKED TEAMS, they don’t seem to mind he compiled that against the bad teams.

But Mason, oh, you can’t use stats like that for Mason, but you can for Murray.

It begs the question:
If Murray’s so much better than Mason, why does Mason ALWAYS beat Murray in Passing efficiency whether it’s a Spring game, a regular season game, or a post season game? Why does Murray ALWAYS LOSE to MASON EVERY SINGLE TIME?

ESPN Joyner called Aaron Murray the “most overrated player in college football”.

——————————————————————————————————————
So what?! Tony Dungy – who’s FAR more credible than any of those talking heads, said that KC should take Murray with their first pick if he came out this year.

I think I’ll trust the opinion of a Super Winning Coach/NFL Analyst who coached one of the greatest QBs in Peyton Manning over Mel Kiper/Todd McShay/Joyner.

For the record here’s some of Mel Kiper’s “expertise” at work:

“I think Ryan Leaf is more mature than Drew Bledsoe, he’s very much a grown up 21 year old.”

“Wes Welker is not worth a second round pick. I don’t care how much you like his work ethic … he has done nothing to show a value that high”

Kiper had QBs Dan McGwire and Brett Favre rated evenly heading into the 1991 draft.

“JaMarcus Russell’s gonna immediately energize that Raider Nation, that fanbase, that football team- on the practice field, in that locker room- three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league. You’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because skill level that he has is certainly John Elway like.”

“Ki-Jana (Carter) could be the next Bo Jackson”

Kiper rated TCU’s LaDainian Tomlinson as tied for the 25th-best player in the 2001 draft, and only the third-best running back that year, behind Mississippi’s Deuce McAllister and Wisconsin’s Michael Bennett.

He thought Houston QB Andre Ware “was going to be a great NFL quarterback.”

Kiper was high on Southern Cal WR Mike Williams; Detroit took him 10th overall in 2005, Williams made seven starts, had 44 catches and two TDs, and was out of the league after three seasons.

Murray will never win the Heisman because he can’t play well against the top teams. He’s no Johnny Manziel or Zach Mettenberger, oh to have a poised QB that can play his best game against Alabama, we can only dream. McShay/Kiper/Joyner are much more respected in their talent evaluations that you suggest. I’ll go with their opinions over your “anonymous’ sources and an inactive biased friend of UGA. If it’s true, why don’t get 3 sources in the NFL Head Coaches who agree wiht you? What you can’t?

Here’s a gem from your buddy Todd McShay:

“I can’t remember being in such awe of a quarterback in my decade of attending combines and pro days. Russell’s passing session was the most impressive of all the pro days I’ve been to. His footwork for such a big quarterback was surprising. He was nimble in his dropbacks, rolling out and throwing on the run. The ball just explodes out of his hands.”

Here’s what an NFL Scout had to say about McShay:

“McShay does not have any good connections,” the source opined. “Higher-ups in the league think he is an arrogant asshole. A know-it-all. And he really knows nothing. Whatever he says about a quarterback, take it to the bank, it will be the opposite. Remember, last August he stated that Jevan Snead was better than Colt McCoy and would get drafted in the top five. He has yet to publicly retract that statement.

“One of the reasons the kid came out was because of what McShay said. The family thought McShay knew and everyone else was wrong. . . . He has problems with game management, accuracy and leadership among other things, but pretty boy Todd thought he was great because of one good game (the Cotton Bowl) a year ago. McShay is a pretty face who comes across like he knows what he is talking about. He does have good presence, but knows nothing.”

Mason owns several state of Georgia records, for td’s, yards, etc, let’s just say he beat out every QB that’s ever played in the state of Georgia for several different records. Mason once threw 7 td passes in a playoff game. Mason’s first pass at Georgia? Touchdown, look it up. Mason turned around Lassiter High, turned them into winners.

Plant High won a state championship the year before AND after Murray won his, they’re just a powerhouse. And the year Murray won his state championship, he was injured for 7 games, Saban was so impressed with the guy who took Murray’s place when Murray went down, he went out and got him to Alabama. I’m perplexed by the assertions of some who have posted here that Mason will get plenty of snaps in the 2013 season. Why would you think that, given the coaching staff’s tendency to leave Murray in games, even after the outcome was no longer in doubt. And for those who criticized RoJo’s references to G-Day statistical comparisons of Murray and Mason, that’s about all the evidence that we have to consider, since the coaches have given Mason so few opportunities to play during the regular season. Many of you assume that Murray is clearly better than Mason, while criticizing those of us who suggest that may not be the case, but the fact is that neither of us has much evidence to confirm our suspicions or assertions, since Murray has almost all the playing time in regular season games. If you’re sure that the U.Ga. coaching staff couldn’t possibly be wrong in judging talent, then I’m sure that you’re comfortable in your certainty that Murray is far better than Mason. As for me, I’d like to see Mason given the chance to play meaningful snaps in games that count. I just don’t expect to see that happen.

JVille, I mean Bulldawg, I mean Thomas Brown, ok, we know how smart you think you are, sure McShay & Kiper and Joyner over there at ESPN know nothing, and you are some kind of football genius when it comes to Aaron Murray’s talent??? Wow, thought I’d heard it all.

Let me see if I can simplify it for you RoJo

You thinking Kiper/McShay/Joyner are correct in their assesment of Murray doesn’t make your opinion of him any more right or wrong than my disagreeing with Kiper/McShay/Joyner Murray makes my opinion any more right or wrong.

What we do know for sure, is that over the next 2-3 yrs Someone IS going to be proven right and someone proven wrong, but today on 1/7/13 they are all just opinions, and you know what those are like.
Again for you to be so passionate about it you should write a letter to your congressman and maybe they can get Mason the starting job,but for now, whether you agree or not CMR is in charge and A. Murray is our QB and he led the team to a 12-2 record and most likely a top 5 finish. You can throw whatever stats you want, this team that team, spew vitriol nothing you say, no tantrum you throw is going to change that fact now or ever.

Deal with it.

427 yards and 5 TD’s NOT enough for you SMART(DUMB)Enough? With a balanced running game AND dropped TD passes by the receivers? UGA had no motivation. Nebraska did. You have little motivation when yor bowl game is not against an equal or better team AND you get left out the BCS bowl you deserved….BUT UNLIKE FLORIDA and OTHER SEC teams, UGA got the job DONE INSPITE OF THESE FACTS….HATER…

If Richt won’t allow for competition at QB, and he won’t Mason and Lemay and Bauta and Ramsey all need to transfer.

Mark Richt runs an entitlement based talent system that isn’t based on competition, or who earned it, but who he likes the best.

So were I Hutson Mason, I’d tell Mark Richt thanks for the memories, time to transfer to a coach that will be fair instead of favoritism. After all, even the bible says:

FAVORITISM IS A SIN.

Dawgs Fans are happy to have Aaron Murray for his Senior year! Our offense has all the lineman back, two of the best running backs in the SEC , two great tight ends, and with Mitchell, Bennett,Scott Wesley, others who are great pass receivers. A QB who knows how to read the defense and has broken all the pass records in the SEC. Thank you, Aaron for returning to lead UGA to another SEC Run.
Hope to get some great prospects in to fill the needs on defense. Araron Murray is a young man who works as hard as anyone in football on the field and a leader that UGA is very proud to have.

Have any of you bloggers been reading what you write? Aaron Murray is decent, but the key to 2013 will be DEFENSE. Georgia got gashed in both the SECCG and the CAPITAL ONE BOWL on the ground. Nobody(well I just saw one blogger say it) wants to admit that we need the 4-3, and not the 3-4 in the sec. The 3-4 works great when you dealing wth big time passers, but heres your reality; The SEC doesn’t have one 1st round QB for the upcoming year. The 3-4 is made to attack and put pressure on the passer, and the toss sweep, and inside run game. This new spread offense that most are using some version of has to have guys who are lane disciplined and forces the qb into bad situations. Georgia could go with a solid 4-3 next year and dominate the east. They will have a hard time dealing with A&M WHO WILL WIN THE WEST NEXT YEAR(I SAID IT BAMA FANS) and Bama or LSU who always hav great backs and are highly disciplined. The Key to all this is Will Mason, or LeMay stay? These are both VHT(Very highly touted QB’s)and will they be content with there rolls? If not and we have only Parker Welch, and Brice Ramsey to turn too, we are in trouble! Wish Murray the best, but BULLDAWG NATION GET HONEST WITH YOURSELVES,and realize CHAMPIONS are made on D, and not at QB. In fact with the exception of CAM NEWTON, what other QB on any SEC NTT has a QB that has flurished at the next level? Now look at FLA, ALA, LSU, and AU and look at the players from those teams in the NFL who are prospering. Georgia find your Defense, and 2013 I’ll betcha you playing in a BCS Title game. If not, You’ll be listening to again, asking, “How is it UGA gets all that talent and falls short year after year”! Geez folks isn’t 32 years enough?

Who won the BCS last year? Alabama. A team that puts defense and running first.

Year before that? Auburn. A team that had Superman at QB but also a tremendous defense led by Nick Fairley.

Year before that? Alabama, see above, defense and running.

Year before that? LSU. And before that Florida, running with Tebow, so they weren’t passing and their D was good.

Truth is, defense still wins.

1-3 start. I don’t see any other way. And Murray is still back in the same position he is now but Georgia is worse off in that they didn’t just develop a QB while rebuilding the defense.

I think he’s coming back because he was way worse than 2nd/3rd round. Way worse. I mean if winning the BCS or SEC is his goal, why did he talk to the NFL in the first place? And if they said 2nd/3rd round, SEE YA! BYE! $$$$$$$$$. I’d even make myself into a first rounder by working hard.

Yet he’s coming back to make himself into a first rounder in 2014? What does that matter, you don’t get paid like they used to as a rookie. I’m not sure there is a tremendous difference in 1st and 3rd round anymore.

Teams that are better that Georgia in 2012 and still will be ranked higher… Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, Clemson, LSU, Texas A&M, South Carolina. Louisville might be in the running too.

So maybe #9 or #10. But take into account the defense and definitely #15. Not so certain CMR wants Murray back. Who do you blame when you inevitably lose a few of those early games? It’d be nice to have a young QB to blame.

ROJO: Your rant is an ignorant rant. Have you look at Murray’s stats? What AM the problem in the SEC Championship? NO. Because AM does not play linebacker. Also, as to breaking records? There’s this kid over in College Station Texas who seems to be breaking all of the big records.

For those of you who don’t know what that means, College Station is where Texas A&M is. They have this QB over there, he’s really good and just a freshman. He beat the team you lost to, on the road, in front of 100,000 of their fans all of whom named their kids after Bear Bryant.

You should pay attention, because that team and QB is worth the hype. And in the east, there is this team… you’ve lost to 3 years in a row and consistently is the best in the East, but with a harder schedule. We’d give anything to get your schedule.

For all you anti-Bobo people. The problem in the past has been Murray, not Bobo. Until last summer’s QB attitude adjustment that Murray received from Gruden and Manning, I think that is who it was, Murray was the problem with the offense, not Bobo. If, Murray improves in 2013, like he did in 2012, he might be considered a legitimate NFL prospect. If he does not improve his ability to deal with real pressure situations, he will never be anything more than a decent college QB.

Aaron – great news! You are a real talent, a student of the game and tough as nails.
Please work on your touch passes for next season (flair, screen, over the middle drop off…). You throw the ball on a rope and your deep ball is very impressive, but you need to also be able to float the ball into the arms of a running halfback or tight end with an easy and timely toss. This would give you the full arsenal of all the throws and make you and all-American candidate next season and first rounder.

No doubt that Aaron made the wise decision. I don’t see him having been drafted in the 2nd round…more like 3rd or 4th (due to his height). If he stays healthy, he should break alotta records next year. The offense should be stout (Bennett & McGowan can easily fill the WR “losses”). However, it’s the defense that will be suspect.

Aaron,
You need to think this over. The defense is depleted, you face a schedule where you will be 9-3 at best, Florida is back and South Carolina has your number. Plus, there are not many QB’s in this years NFL draft class. Please do not stay thinking you will win a NC. most likely Urban Meyer, Nick Saban or Johnny Football will get the NC. We appreciate everything you have done but you and Coach Richt have proven you are just not capable of winning the big games. The NC is so far out of reach you have a better shot at winning the Super Bowl.

McCarron no more won the game for Bama than Golson lost the game for ND. McCarron executed the game plan. The O-Line executed their assignments and the receivers were phenomenal in getting open, and the defense shut ND down. McCarron is an excellent Q-Back and I wouldn’t trade him for any other college Q-Back, but it takes a TEAM like the Tide to win a championship.

The support that Ala. gets, the coaching they get, the attention to detail Saban insists on, and the recruits they get, that’s a championship formula. I want that for the Dawgs, I want them to be the Ala. of the East Division. I want them to play Ala. every year in the SEC CG. That way I won’t care which one wins it as long as it is one of them. Ala. recruits championship calibre players and then coaches them into what they are. At Ala. you either listen and learn and then execute or you don’t play. You do it Saban’s way.

At Ga. Richt is never going to be a Saban type coach. That’s not his style. Ga. does need to recruit players that fit Richts style coaching. I think that is why you see a lot of 5 star recruits come to Ga. and are never heard of again. Some of them just don’t fit his style of coaching. Some of these recruits need a stern disciplinarian and have to be taught discipline. “Go sit in the corner” doesn’t get it with these recruits that are between childhood and manhood. Crowell is a perfect example. What would he have been at Ala.? Murray, Gurley, Marshall, they seem to fit the Richt mold. They will help put Ga. back in the SEC CG. If a recruit comes in with a bad, troubled attitude….”Get rid of Him”!! Let some other coach deal with him. I don’t care how good he was in high school. Bad attitudes, no discipline, lazy, a trouble maker….they are like putting poison in the drinking water. They will spoil the entire team. If you recruit one like that, you are not going to change him in the short time that he’s with you. Cut him loose, let him go spoil someone else’s team.

Does Alabama’s shellacking of ND make any of you negative Dawg bloggers feel differently about Murray and the Dawgs game against Bama???

Congratulations to the Notre Dame team and coaches. You won 12 games and got to the National CG. Only two teams made it and you were one of them. I know you are disappointed and we could all see the shock in the players eyes early in the first half. You fought hard but were outmanned. In 2013 you now know what it takes to win a National Championship. I’ve never liked ND, but this team showed some class, and that’s a tribute to their coach.

“Johnny Football”….I prefer “Johnny Fast feet”. He’s got them. Remember this: For every force there’s a counter force. He won’t be a surprise next year. The defenses will be geared to stop him. Maybe he’s a good pocket passer, I don’t know, he better be, but most of the damage he does is with his feet and passing on the run. Plus! He’s got the Heisman baggage to deal with every week. Everybody will be gunning for him the same way they will be gunning for the Nat’l Champion. That’s why it’s tough to repeat. Every game, no matter who you play, every team is going to give you the best they’ve got every week. Nobody is going to go through the SEC undefeated. Let down for one game and you lose. That happened to Ala. against A&M 2012. A&M had lost 2 games and Ala. was playing at home. They let down and before they could recover the game was over.

@the tide is rolling and nothing can stopit…..congratulations on hiring the best coach ever in college ball…he will probably stay at Ala lo9ng enough to eclipse the man he already has demonstrated superiority over….More and more smart people are coming to realize the obvious about Coach Saban….he’s one smart, tough, articulate operator and is better than any coach ever has been and probablyu ever will be…..I get that , as do many intelligent Dog fans and other non Alabama fans…….Coach Saban will have the choice between eclipsing Bryant while at Alabama, purely winnng the most nattys of any Ala coach….then the more interesting eclipse…the super Bryant level and term Saban wishes to take that…..it coulkd easily be at a UGA, U F or other top SEC school….at that point, it won’t matter….Coach Saban has been very respectful toward Georgia over the years…and there he sits in an interview after the game with Fowler, Herbstriet and Pollack commenting, not for the first time, regarding hyow good UGA is this year and how close they came to being in Miami at thatb poat game op of the Victor…Coach Saban knows that UGA would have also blown out ND….and he acknowledged that….but you still have that damn MUSBERGER TRYING TO PUSH PRESEASON STANDINGS FOR SEBVERAL MIDE WEST TERAMS, oREGON, usc AND SOME OTHERS WITH NO MENTUON OF sOUTH cAROLIUNSA, gEORGIA, fLORIDA, lsu…he pushed A and M because of Johnny Football and because he can pull for A and M as eveidence that SEC is not that bgvreat..>>>>sberger isn senile….Saban is one of the most intelligent men in Amereica….Why, sir, are you so stupid as to not realize how damn strong UGA is right now….Ity’sk kid…they are no threat to the tide being great, but can and will be gfreat right along with the tide……You are afraid of UGA….; Saban likes UGA and would love to coach there once he eclipses the Bear while at Ala or maybe before….he didn’t like the job at bLSU….he loves living in Tuscaloosa, and he would love living in Athens…that wouyld really upset you and people like you that think it is Alabama and not CFoach Saban….it is Coach Saban, and he would be just as successful at several of the Southeastern scools….don’t kid yourself…..well you….you aren’t able to not kid yourself…..may no good come to you you jerk, but congratulations to the vast majority of great folks at Alabama who are supporting the Saban Dynasty at Alabama is a very cool and respectful manner….to all you neanderthals who dare disrespect great institutions like the Univ.of Georgia, you can all go staraight to hell.. Roll Tide and continued success to that vast majority of Tide fans who also repect UGA

One can certainly surmise a couple of things by reading these blogs…

1. Half of you are the worst kind of “fans”… I would bet a comparison of you whiney losers and Mr. Murray, in the realm of what has been accomplished by either, will show hands down a huge discrepancy in favor of Mr. Murray… I bet not a ONE of you can come close… I also bet that 99.9% of you have NEVER played organized football, especially at the level Georgia plays… You’re exposing yourself as crybaby punks…

2. Even amongst the college grads on here, the majority don’t know the difference between your and you’re… Only thing worse than a sissyfied whiner is a sissyfied whiner with bad grammar…

Put it to rest, a-wipes. unless you’ve ever led a team on the field…

This will probably cause trouble within the ranks at UGA. The next quarterback in-waiting has been seen by some as being better than Murray. My guess is that he will make an announcement in the next few weeks or month that he is transferring to another school. This will also affect the morale of many of the UGA football players who also thinks the sub is the better quarterback. The fur will fly!

Murray bypassed NFL because ” no NFL” team would want the kid!
I noted that Bama’s quarterback, AJ McCarron has only thrown 3
picks all year..Murray throws three picks per game…………He chokes
in big games and always 5 yard behind…. 5 yards at least……
