ATHENS –It’s not really a secret, nor is it official, but all indications are that Chris Wilson will become Georgia’s new defensive line coach in the coming days.
Wilson, who is currently defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Mississippi State, met with head coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham this past week and agreed in general terms to replacing Rodney Garner as the Bulldogs’ defensive line coach. But Wilson’s hiring cannot become official until the job opening has been posted for the minimum amount of time and Wilson has cleared UGA’s background check.

“Nothing is official and it won’t be until Georgia completes the background checks and their official deal,” said Wilson, reached by phone Sunday in Nashville, where he is attending the American Football Coaches Association national convention. “Once that’s done, I believe I’ll have the job. But nothing is actually official yet as far as posting and all the things that go along with that. I’m excited about the opportunity and I believe it’s going to be there for me.”
Wilson could not say if he would also absorb any of the other titles that Garner held, including assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.
“We didn’t talk about that,” he said. “We didn’t get into particulars. We definitely don’t know what all it will entail at this point. But I’m just excited about the opportunity to work with Coach Richt and the University of Georgia and that’s what I’m looking forward to more than anything else.”
In Wilson, the Bulldogs will be getting an experienced coach with an impressive resume. He served Mississippi State as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach the past three seasons. At $308,000, he was one of the highest-paid members of coach Dan Mullen’s staff, according to the Jackson-Clarion Ledger. He shared coordinator duties with Mississippi State’s Geoff Collins, who had took over defensive play-calling duties for the Gator Bowl matchup against Northwestern. They lost 34-20.
State finished 34th in the nation in scoring defense at 23.31 ppg, but gave up 33.6 in the last six games of the year during which it went 1-5.
Wilson also was defensive line coach and special teams coordinator under Bob Stoops at Oklahoma, his alma mater. Wilson was a Butkus Award candidate as a linebacker for the Sooners and recorded 311 tackles as a four-year letterman (1988-91). Wilson also held defensive coaching positions at Colorado, Army, Illinois State and Indiana State, among others.
Garner had been Georgia’s recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach for the last 15 years and assistant head coach for the last six years. He left UGA on Dec. 22 to take the same job at Auburn, his alma mater.
Wilson, who turns 44 on Tuesday, and his wife Tina have two children, Caleb and Cody.
“I was excited just to get the interview,” Wilson said of Georgia. “We’ll see where it goes.”

Richt and Grantham must have had good reasons for this hire but the stats. are not that great. I hope the reason that the teams he coached were only fair was because those team did not have the talent or depth needed to do any better. Well, Wilson has the players now. I hope Richt will not hesitate, after giving him 2 years to prove himself in recruiting and coaching, to replace Wilson if he doesn’t improve our recruiting of linemen and on the field production. Please don’t take that as anything negative in this hiring because I hope Mr. Wilson works out but we all know how much Richt hates to fire a coach who is under performing.

Come on Chip, you are better than this. Do you really think they had co DCs and they were both named Wilson. Geoff’s last name is not Wilson and he was recently upgraded to the sole DC. Hence,
the eagerness for the real Wilson to desire a move to UGAG.

Below is a compilation of UGA’s Special Teams statistics this past season compared to Oklahoma’s from 2007-’09 when Coach Wilson was in charge of the Sooners’ special teams (I think it’s safe to say that he WON’T be the answer to UGA’s placekicking woes the past two seasons; fwiw, it seems like he had his most success early w/ the kickoff return units and later w/ the punt return and punt return coverage units):
UGA’s Special Teams – 2012 (FBS Rankings)
Kickoff Returns: 22.16 yds / return (ranked #44), including 1 TD
Kickoff Returns – Coverage: 20.20 yds / return (ranked #36)
Punt Returns: 7.52 yds / return (ranked #82)
Punt Returns – Coverage: 11.14 yds / return (ranked #103), including 1 TD
Net Punting: 36.78 yds (ranked #57)

Punt Returns – Coverage: 1.76 yds / return, 0 TDs

HE IS A GOOD RECRUITER AND DOES A GOOD JOB WITH THE D-LINE. YOU CAN BET BOB STOOPS WOULD NOT HAVE BROUGHT HIM BACK TO OKLAHOMA IF HE DID NOT FEEL HE WAS CAPABLE TO GET THE JOB DONE. HE LEFT FOR STATE BECAUSE IT WAS A PROMOTION FOR HIM. HE IS ABOUT 10 YEARS YOUNGER THAN GARNER SO HE SHOULD RELATE TO THE KIDS TODAY BETTER. HE KNOWS THE SEC SO HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO ADJUST TO THE SPEED ETC. OF THE CONFERENCE. I LIKE THE HIRE.

@ 7576DAWG, I agree with you totally. If a coach cannot come in and make a difference with all this talent, after two years fire him and hire someone else. Bobo has been pmpered for six years. He did ok with the playcalling, but I still expect better with all this talent. The challange next year will be, can they sustain drives and score with out having to throw long touchdown passes. Give the D a break and learn how to run the ball down teams throats. The OL will be very experienced and if they don’t get the job done, it is time to replace Friend. It was a good year, but UGA can do better and do it every year, not every once in a while.

Wilson had Miss St’s defense ranked:
#21 in defensive scoring in 2010
#16 in defensive scoring in 2011
#7 in nation red zone td’s in 2010 & 2011
#13 & #17 in red zone scoring in 2010 & 2011
No one rushed for 200 yards on Miss St in 2010.
Only 3 teams rushed for 200+ yards on Miss St in 2011
4 teams rushed for 200+ yards on Miss St in 2012
Note:
Only 1 team rushed for 300+ yards on Miss St in 2010-2012
Georgia had 3 teams rush for 300+ yards in 2012 alone.

Murray’s first two years as leader was not very good .He was a lot more mouth than actual production. A lot of excuses even though he was one of the hardest workers on the team trying to turn things around. Then in the off season before the 2012 schedule started he attended Jon Gruden school for Quarterback’s and play calling. Even though Murray has made some mistakes in 2012 he proved to me that he has the ability to listen , learn from mistakes and perform better on the field.
I hope he does come back for 2013 because if he does better than he did in 2012 , Georgia’s Offense will be one of the best if not rated number 1 in the nation. Murray can prove that all that hard work he put in does pay off and Georgia will get the reward by having a Championship year. I predict over 500/yards per game Offense and over 4000 yards passing.

I disagree……this will be a great hire. He had better stats than Grantham’s defenses with half the talent….AND playing in the SEC West during a time when LSU, Bama and Auburn were winning many NCs. I think he even stuffed the DAWGS several years ago!!! Also, unlike Rodney, Coach Wilson has been a defensive mind his entire career where Rodney was actually an offensive lineman.

In 2012, SEC teams w/ a positive talent differential (i.e., more talent as based on available recruited scholarship player rankings) won 42 of 57 games, that is 73.7%.
In 2012, Mississippi State’s talent level was tied w/ Missouri for 10th out of 14 SEC teams. Even with below-average SEC talent, they managed to win half their SEC games and compile an overall 8-5 record.
Considering this fact, Mississippi State OVERACHIEVED in 2012. Those teams that failed to play up to their potential (e.g., Auburn, Tennessee, and Arkansas) fired their coaches (deservedly).
So the devil is in the detail you say….well notice the correlation between above-average talent and wins (also reference them to the latest BCS rankings). Also notice the correlation between below average talent (e.g., Kentucky) and losses. Bottom-line is its a LOT easier to win if you have more talent than your opponent.
Average # of stars (i.e., prospect’s assessed potential) per available recruited player per Rivals.com’s Recruiting Database and 2012 season (& SEC) record:
1. Alabama: 3.83 [record: 12-1 overall, 8-1 SEC]
2. Florida: 3.75 [record: 11-2 overall, 7-1 SEC]
3. Georgia: 3.62 [record: 12-2 overall, 7-2 SEC]
4. LSU: 3.58 [record: 10-3 overall, 6-2 SEC]
5. Auburn: 3.50 [record: 3-9 overall, 0-8 SEC] – fired their coaching staff
6. Tennessee: 3.31 [record: 5-7 overall, 1-7 SEC] – fired their coaching staff
7. S. Carolina: 3.26 [record: 11-2 overall, 6-2 SEC]
—Talent break line—
8. Texas A&M: 3.24 [record: 11-2 overall, 6-2 SEC] – overachiever
9. Arkansas: 3.06 [record: 4-8 overall, 2-6 SEC] – fired their coaching staff
T10. Mississippi St: 2.99 [record: 8-5 overall, 4-4 SEC (beat Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, & Arkansas; lost to Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, & Northwestern)]
T10. Missouri: 2.99 [record: 5-7 overall, 2-6 SEC]
12. Ole Miss: 2.94 [record: 7-6 overall, 3-5 SEC]
13. Vanderbilt: 2.76 [record: 9-4 overall, 5-3 SEC] – overachiever
14. Kentucky: 2.72 [record: 2-10 overall, 0-8 SEC] – fired their coaching staff

What is wrong with you trolls, always knocking UGA? They hired a defensive line coach, a position for which he is very well qualified, not a defensive coordinator. Mullen’s gimmick offense has stalled at Mississippi State. The only reason it worked at Florida was because he had Tim Tebow to run it. He can change as many defensive coaches as he wants, but until he adjust his offense to his talent, that team will struggle, especially with Ole Miss appearing to be on the rise. MSU’s defense always played hard and IMO above the level of their talent.

If i were OL men i would look at UGA. The line OL was the big question this past year but improved every game to the point that the offense by the end of the year was one of the best in the nation and will be even stronger next year. I think Friend has done a great job much better than the last one. Garner played offensive line at Auburn and failed as a defense line coach because of lack of knowledge. Nobody seemed to be upset when he left, no big offer of a raise. I think what you anti hire people are afraid of is that Wilson will do for DL what Friend has done for the OL and that would be the missing link. I think the people that are against Wilson are against UGA moving forward.

All you whiners are funny….armchair QB’s at best. Haters is all you are. Good hire and possibly a great hire. He coaches D-line and special teams. He isnt hired to be DC. All you guys hatin on Bobo still…shutup. We had growing pains since he was a FIRST time OC and palycaller and NOW we will get our reward. He might be head coach at UGA one day too but thats another topic. Bobo had to learn the job and BTW UGA only had TWO teams capable of winning it all and 1 was this year and the other was 2007 BUT UGA didnt get the shot. MOST coaches dont win the NC in less than 14 years of being a head coach(took Saban 11 and he is the king)and doing it with a first time OC who was promoted from QB coach and then takes over playcalling, well thats a tall order. Then add in all of the turnover and lack of depth on the OL the last 5 years, it is even a much taller order. Next couple years UGA wiil have an OL together for the first time in 6 years really. With Murray coming back and the RB’S, LOOK OUT SEC DEFENSES! That is how Bama on it all THIS year….OL. Its hard to coordinate the O with the foundation not having guys that have played together for more than a season! 2013 looks to be another year to fight for the SEC title with Murray back. I know Mason hates that but for UGA fans its awesome! Ramsey can redshirt, one year under Mason and then its all his for 3 years. UGA future looks bright and Bobo is going to be a big part of it. Hopefully Wilson will be too and I REALLY like his special team experience! That has been missing….

Big Taylor has shown more to teammates on scout team than Geathers on the field anyway according to some who supposedly know. Murray will be back, thank goodness. Let’s get these big defensive players signed, given physicals, and in the weight room. Only about two months until spring starts.

Let’s clear this up one more time. Hines Ward was/is a DGD….Hines has 30 million in the Bank. Hines has been on dancing with the stars……He’s on some cooking challenge show NOW with Guy Fieda and Rachel Ray. He’s on sports radio nationally every week. He’s not coming to Athens to work 50 weeks/60 hours a week for 200K…… Ain’t happening…..now or ever……

This man has an opportunity to make a difference at UGA, as the performance of the D-line has been inconsistent. UGA gets the horses, but hasn’t seemed to do a great job in training them up. I hope Coach Wilson has the ability to get 100% out of these guys. Watching the defensive line playing beneath their abilities, taking plays off, and not playing to the whistle has been a source of frustration for me. I’m glad to see new blood at D-line coach. I hope he teaches his charges to GATA and KATA!

[...] As we move forward, we’ll be keeping an eye on the vacancies Dan Mullen must fill on his coaching staff. He needs somebody to coach the defensive line and the cornerbacks, and it’ll be interesting to see who Mullen hires. He’s got a strong track record when it comes to hiring assistants. By the way, Chris Wilson to Georgia is all but official. [...]

The demotion from DC is not a reflection on his ability as a D-Line coach. The coaching profession is filled with excellent position coaches who couldn’t make the jump to coordinator and excellent coordinators who couldn’t make the jump to head coach. As has been posted earlier, his teams had solid stats against the run and tackles for loss, which is how you measure a d-line’s effectiveness. I am tired of seeing all-pro defensive linemen who were only pretty good at Georgia. Only time will tell, but I view this as a definite upgrade.

This is a good hire. The stats may not be stellar, but it is solid performance for a coach in the SEC at the talent and recruiting level of Miss State. Plus, the man really seems to WANT it. He seems to appreciate all that is UGA and sees it as an exciting challenge. We need that attitude all over the place at every single coaching and playing position.

Wilson’s coaching couldn’t do worse than Garner’s against the run, even with new players (now that’s saying something!), but what else does Wilson bring to the table?
Well, we could look at these potential recruits…
Elijah Daniel, Avon HS, #4 DE in the country (list includes Miss St & UGA)
Davin Bellamy, Chamblee HS, #23 DE in the country (list includes Miss St & UGA)
Jason Carr, White Station HS, #25 DE in the country (list includes Miss St)
Toby Johnson, Hutchinson HS, #2 DE JC Transfer in the country (list includes Miss St & UGA)
Andrew Billings, Waco HS, #9 DT in the country (list includes Miss St)
We shall see if this new hire will bring presents with him.
GOOD HIRE.

I think this is a fine hire. I had heard earlier in the year that this guy is one of the great coaches that nobody has heard of yet but is a real up and comer in the coaching ranks. I believe it’s an upgrade.

did yall notice all the bulldogs in the nfl playoffs and most of them young ones. two georgia players are probably the best two interior d linemen in the nfl with geno atkins and charles johnson. the bengals starting lineup had orson charles, aj green, clint boling, geno atkins, robert geathers. houston had ben jones. minnesota had blair walsh and i did not see their d lineup but i think one of their corners was from uga. falcons got dent. seattle has chris clemons another griffin ga boy that went to uga probably their best pass rusher and one of the best in the league and i saw ellerbe absolutely blowing it up for the ravens had nine solo tackles befor the fourth quarter when he got hurt got him undrafted been starting ever since. redskins had golston another interior d linemen. broncos got moreno and bailey. those are starters. dont think the packers have any bulldogs but i think the patriots have one and dont know about the 49ers.

dont know what college team had the most pro bowlers but the bulldogs were well represented with aj green and geno atkins, blair walsh, charles johnson, champ bailey, i am missing one person was it clemons from seattle i know i am missing one. any way the bulldogs were well represented and look for guys like quentin moses and orson charles to get there soon. geno atkins is by far the best interior d linemen in the nfl look for him to make the top 10 of 100 best players then everyone will know him.

all you knocking this hire the dude was a good enough d line coach to get offered a chance at defensive coordinator and we just hired a man who was a defensive coordinator for a team that had a ton of turnovers and not much talent or depth so basically grantham has a d line coach that he can bounce ideas off of and i hope he can teach grantham how to run zone coverages bc we are still lost in zone coverages and have trouble getting lined up this is with a bunch of seniors and stars. this guy can only help. we hired him as a d line coach tech fans so basically we got a coordinator coaching a position not a whole unit does that makes sense to yall for yall to go to such a prestigious university yall have a hard time understanding simple articles. he was not hired to coach out defense just the line yall got it he came from a team with less talent and depth than ours the qb threw 3 interceptions before the second quarter in the gator bowl and northwestern only had 14 pts at halftime.

he was on the chopping block as coordinator not d line coach. tech fans this is a good hire. state has no d line depth at all. techies are suppose to be smart but to me this is common sense we got a coordinator to coach the d line. just curious who is the big name d line coach all yall had in mind can yall name a great d line coach that yall thought we would get i doubt it bc yall dont really know any dont go searching the web to give me one name one off the top of your head and not a coordinator but a position coach. you cant but we just hired a coordinator from a team lacking talent on both sides of the ball and had a qb that threw 3 picks in the 1st quarter of the gator bowl and the defense only gave up one td by halftime the other was a pick 6. the state d line does not have the talent of ugas or the depth. state has no depth.

It’s always the usual suspects whining about any and every thing UGA does. They have made a full-time job out of crying like rotten brats. Hey Hawk, we get it. You think Gardner is better than Wilson or wait a minute, why would you even care? Why do you spend so much time on UGA article’s? Wilson is new blood who will instruct under CTG, and not cause friction. It’s not just you Hawk, lots of negative posters love to criticize every move we make. Thanks for the snarky comments, keep them coming …

You UGA fans are ridiculous.. You bash other programs for taking a coach from Mississippi schools and then you praise your teams ability to get a coach from a Mississippi school. Of course he’s a good coach, he wouldn’t be in the SEC otherwise. Don’t be so blatantly critical when other teams do the exact thing your team does.. Biggest group of hypocrites imaginable.. Morons

Sounds like a pretty good hire. Coming from the same conference is always a plus if only the fact that hes seen our competition before and might be able to give some D. Mullen tips! He needs to be careful about what he says to reporters about interviewing for a job and saying that he thinks he has it before the job has been posted for the required time period. State of Georgia and Board of Regents’ positions have to be posted for a set time period before interviews are to even begin according to the official rules. In my former state position I would have been canned for setting up an interview with an applicant before the end of the posting period. I wouldn’t have thought that Richt could even talk to him yet. Pre-selections aren’t allowed.
