It’s official: UGA all-star linebacker Jarvis Jones to enter NFL draft as junior

ATHENS – Jarvis Jones is turning pro.

Not that anybody didn’t already know that. The junior outside linebacker has been projected as high as No. 1 in the April NFL if he chose to forgo his senior season. But it wasn’t until late Friday evening that Claude Felton, UGA’s director of sports communications, confirmed the news via Jones. Felton said Georgia is not planning a formal news conference at this point.

Jones issued a statement through UGA:

“This has been a difficult decision, and one that I have talked over with my family and coaches. I want to thank my family, teammates, coaches and support staff and the Bulldog Nation for everything over the last three years. I will always appreciate the chance Georgia gave me after my injury at Southern Cal. There is nothing like the Bulldog fans and I will forever be proud to wear the ‘G’. I think this decision comes at the right time for me and my family and I look forward to seeing what the next level holds for me. Go Dogs!”

Jones leaves with the Bulldogs’ single-season record for quarterback sacks. After getting two against Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl this past Tuesday, Jones finished with 14.5, or point-five more than David Pollack, who set the old record in 2002. That was also tops in the nation.

Jones, a 6-3, 241-pound native of Columbus, a two-time consensus All-American, recorded 28 sacks in his two seasons with Georgia. He played in 26 games over his two seasons with Georgia, starting all of them. He finished his career with 28 sacks in that span (1.08/game), which is tied for third in school history. Jones also recorded 44 tackles for loss of 235 yards, 155 total tackles, nine forced fumbles and an interception during his time as a Bulldog.

Jones, a 2012 consensus First Team All-American, ;ed the nation in tackles for loss (24.5 for loss of 132 yards) and forced fumbles (seven). He was third on the Bulldogs with 85 tackles and added an interception and two fumble recoveries in 12 games played this season (Jones was injured for two of Georgia’s 14 games).

Jones joined the Bulldogs as a scout team member in 2010 after transferring from Southern California. He was a consensus first-team All-American in 2011 after leading the SEC in sacks (13.5) and tackles for loss (19.5) and piling up 70 tackles in 14 games.

The 2013 NFL draft is April 25-27.

A DGD!!! Sad, but not surprised, to see him go. Can’t wait to see what awaits him in the NFL. Hopefully he stays far away from my NFL team’s rivals.

I hope other up-and-coming kids look at his example. He was humble, he worked hard, he listened to his coaches and he was a proud dawg! I hope he makes a lot of money but I pray that he keeps the “G” stamped on his heart!!

It was a pleasure to watch Jarvis the past two years. He truly is a young man of character that symobizes what a Georgia Dawg should be. Not only a great player but a great person. I wish all players could be like Jarvis. Humble, hard working and respectful. He is a natural born leader and will excel in the NFL. Come back to school and get your degree between NFL seasons. We were blessed to have him and will surely miss him. I think Jenkins will play his role and do quite well.

Go Dawgs!!!!

Jarvis is a gem on and off the field. So rare for a superstar to be so humble. Everything he did for UGA is sincerely appreciated. I hope his example rubbed of on some of the young pups.

Wishing nothing but the best for Jarvis and his family!

Jarvis, it’s been a privilege to watch you the past two seasons and you have definitely made us proud. Thank you for the relentless but humble way you played the game. What a breath of fresh air in the Cam Newton or typical Miami player world we live in. Thank you young man. Thank you. You will be missed.

Jarvis Jones brought more to the Bulldogs defense than his physical football skills. He made others around him better. He is a true leader, who knows how to make those around him better than they may think they can be.

As Dorothy once said, “I think I’ll miss you most of all.”

I think I said at least 10 times this season, we were just so lucky and blessed to have him as a Dawg. What a true leader and we were were gifted to have him both on and off the field. Here’s to wishing you all the success you can find on Sundays, Jarvis. Thank you for your time at UGA, there is no doubt you will be missed.

Jarvis,

Time to take of you and the family! You gave UGA and all of us fans a great ride. Thanks for the dedication and effort as a student athlete at UGA. Find the time to finish your degree and come back to Athens for a graduation ceremony you will always have for you and your family. Money is everything, but making you and your family proud of getting an education is “priceless.” GO DAWGS!!

It is really good to see someone that sets the example of what a leader should do. Watch ESPN’s 30 on 30 about all the stars that made millions that are now broke. I wish you all the best and you will always remembered by all the Bulldawg Nation. Of course the rest of the SEC is really happy you are leaving too.
