ORLANDO, Fla. – Aaron Murray would not say whether he had played his last game as a Georgia Bulldog – Alec Ogletree did, by the way – but whatever he decides he knows he’ll go into his next season off a win for a change.
Murray, a junior who is contemplating early entry into the NFL set a Georgia bowl record with five touchdown passes and threw for 427 yards overall to earn Capital One Bowl MVP honors and lead the No. 7 Bulldogs to a 45-31 come-from-behind victory over Nebraska Tuesday at Citrus Bowl Stadium. Murray was at the offensive controls as Georgia lost its previous two bowl games.
“It was an awesome game and I’m definitely very excited to get a win,” said Murray, who also set Georgia’s single-season passing record with 3,544 yards. “I don’t know what it feels like to go into an offseason with a win, so that in itself feels great. But it was great to get a win for these seniors and great to get 12 wins. As for the future, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m just enjoying the moment right now.”
Georgia offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo said he’ll sit down with Murray to talk about his future on Monday. Meanwhile, Murray said he’d return home to Tampa to discuss his options with his parents. The underclassman deadline to declare for the draft is Jan. 15.
Ogletree, a junior linebacker who led the Bulldogs with 13 tackles on Tuesday, said after the game he is definitely going to make the jump to the pros. He and outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, also a junior, both project as first-rounders. Jones did not announce a decision on Tuesday, however.
The 2012 Bulldogs (12-2) become just the third team in UGA history to win 12 games in one season. They the 1980 national champions (12-0) and the 2002 SEC champions (13-1). Georgia has won 22 games over the last two seasons.
“Well, it’s more fun to win than to lose,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “We’d lost the last two (bowl games) and we were getting kind of tired of that. We’ve worked so hard to get better from that 6-7 year (in 2010). We didn’t win the SEC Championship but we certainly performed a lot better . . . and we wanted to win this bowl to prove – maybe to ourselves – that we were one of the best teams in the country. So I’m just thankful for the victory.”
It didn’t come easy. The Bulldogs, who had jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead on an early safety and touchdown, found themselves trailing 31-23 late in the third quarter. But Georgia’s defense limited Nebraska (10-4) to only one second-half score and Murray rallied the Bulldog’ offense.
Murray led them on a 79-yard scoring drive to tie the game. After three straight Todd Gurley runs – the freshman paced the Bulldogs’ with 125 yards rushing and a touchdown — Murray hit Tavarres King on an 11-yard completion for a third-down conversion. Georgia was 12-of-17 on third down for the game.
On the next play, Murray connected with a diving Chris Conley on a 49-yard touchdown pass to bring the Bulldogs within two with 7:26 to go in the third quarter. Georgia elected to go for the two-point conversion and Murray made good on it with laser pass to Rhett McGowan over the middle that tied the game at 31-all.
The game-winning play came with Murray scrambling toward the right sideline early in the fourth quarter. He directed a tightly-covered Keith Marshall to change his route and head toward the end zone down the sideline. He hit Marshall with a nifty back-shoulder throw that resulted in a 24-yard touchdown and a 38-31 Georgia lead with 14:52 to play.
The outcome still hung in the balance, however. Georgia’s defense stopped the Cornhuskers near midfield and forced them to punt. Taking over at their own 15, the Bulldogs faced third-and-12 from their own 13 when Nebraska sent a full-house blitz. But Georgia had a perfect call played – a tunnel screen to Conley, and Murray had the presence to withstand the pressure, avoid a deflection, and hit Conley in stride as he streaked across the middle of the field. Conley ramled 87 yards untouched a touchdown and a two-score lead.
“That was a designed play,” said Conley, who finished with 136 yards and two touchdowns on two catches. “Coach Bobo did a great job on the play-calling, recognizing the house blitz. Murray made that check at the line, made a great throw and all I had to do was catch and run.”
Murray wasn’t sharp early. He threw interceptions on two of Georgia’s first three possessions, including one that Nebraska linebacker Will Compton returned 24 yards for a touchdown. But he was extremely sharp when it mattered, completing 7-of-8 passes for two touchdowns as the Bulldogs’ turned a tie into a 14-point lead.
“It definitely was a tough start with a couple of picks early,” Murray said. “But they were early on and we knew there was a full game ahead of us and we were still in the game. It was great after that second pick to come out and have a nice (75-yard) touchdown to Tavarres.”
Murray’s 427 yards on 18-of-33 passing tied his career record as a Bulldog. The yards, the five touchdowns and the 87-yarder were all Georgia bowl records. He also set the school record for TDs in a season (36) and total offense (3,548 yards) and added to his record for career TD passes (now 95). He narrowly missed a sixth touchdown strike, which King couldn’t haul in in the end zone in the game’s final minutes.
Murray closes out his junior season with 3,893 yards on 249-of-388 passing and 36 TDs with 10 interceptions. After the game, Georgia fans chanted “one more year” to Murray as he accepted his MVP trophy in an on-field ceremony shortly after the game.
Murray wouldn’t say but did let it slip that he is “gonna miss the best fans in the country.”
Whether that’s now or a year from now will be determined later.

It’s a win but it was another schizophrenic effort. Murray is player of the game and yet most of his throws are not on target. His recievers seem to continually bail him out. The defense? If we have elite athletes then we have bad coaching. It’s about 1300 yards rushing given in in the last 4 games. But hey, I’m use to this.

I was really worried until late in the 4th. We still need to work on our run D, but our offense can still make up for a lot. It’s also clear that Gurley is twice the running back that Marshall is. Marshall is faster, but he gets brought down too easily. Murray rebounded from a rough start and passed for 427 yards. Great end to the year and I’m already dreading Saturdays without college football.

It took UGA 3 full quarters to figure out that all they had to do was throw deep balls. A nice win, but let’s not forget Wisconsin hung 70 points on them. I was not impressed, especially with this supposedly NFL-caliber defense.

Defense as usual lacked the ability to stop the run, luckily we forced some turnovers . Offense looked sparatic for most of the day, but considering our top 3 recievers were out it was a good performance. Now lets see who signs in feb and who decides to stick around for another year.. Go Dawgs !!

GB hit the nail on the head. AM threw pretty good deep balls, but if you take those away the rest of his performance was mediocre at best. I personally think he should head to the NFL. He’s surprisingly tough for his size and has gotten lit up enough times thanks to poor OL play. Don’t risk a serious injury next year.

Good win dawgs. With the talent we have on the team and most importantly the high school talent in this state it’s no reason we not a top 5 team and challenging for a NC year after year. No team in the SEC should have a better recruiting pipeline then us. Richt gotta step it up and keep them boys highly motivated.

We won’t have to worry about this defence anymore because most of them will be gone. I wish them all the best but also look forward to next year because we can not be any worse on D than we were this year. As a matter of fact I do not see how we can help but get better because i believe that our D underachieved all year long. Our offense on the other hand should be a huge strength.

Nice recovery by Murray and the Dogs. I decided to quit worrying about losing so many players from our defense next year because this group underperformed this year anyway. When they couldn’t tackle Alabama’s running backs, I gave credit to the running backs. But, then, when they couldn’t tackle Nebraska’s running backs today, I got concerned.
We’ll have lots of youth on defense next year, but lots of talent. And we should have the best offensive line we have had in quite a while.

Good win. Had to be hard to play this one and not be in the NC game. Hats off to these kids for getting themselves up for this one. Hard to lose all the good receivers we lost and still score all those touchdowns through the air. Conley may be the best of the lot. My next door neighbor coach told me he would be one of our best. If Murray comes back our offense may be the best in the nation next year.
I am going out on a limb but I think the defense will be just as good next season. More overall quickness.

I am proud of the Dawgs but frustrated with the defensive play, not necessarily the players but the formations. How can you stop a running defense with only two down linemen? Additionally our LBs were playing 6 yds off the line. We had gaps that were So wide that even I could create a hole big enough for my back to pick up 6-8 yds or more.

Nebraska’s offense is good as is Martinez and they run a scheme we never see – the D did a good job. Well, I know several of the “posters” on here are the same person using different names ~ just shut up and go play with your X box. The Dawgs had a great year and go into the off season with their heads held high. Just got in from the game. I’m shocked to see Murray voted as MVP, the committee wasn’t at the same game I was. He is blessed to have talented receivers to where he just heaves the ball in their general direction and they make plays. Happened all day, I saw him make one decent back shoulder pass toward the end of the game but everything else was all receivers making a play. TV doesn’t show you what’s really going on, he just isn’t that good. The Nebraska QB was more impressive IMO. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings for him to go ahead and try out for the NFL, but if scouts were at the game they he isn’t a high round pick. Jarvis Jones is a stud by the way.

I’ve been on the Dump Richt band wagon several times because ANY halfway decent coach could come in here and recruit a Top 10 recruiting class. He does that. And all I ask is that we FINISH in the Top 10. All too frequently we have not. And our biggest problem is that our NFL calibre defense is ranked 71st in the country against the run. HOWEVER…………I’m now satisfied with this season and the direction of the program. We’re going to ranked as high as 5th (could have 2nd if we showed up in SC). But things now look good for the future. you Murray haters suck. He had some bad moments, but had a great game overall. Receivers bailed him out? Don’t think T. King would agree since he dropped what should have been TD number 6. I really hope Murray comes back despite all you haters that probably were the ones that egged his house. Next year could be epic on offense if he comes back.

How long before GT Bob tell us this was not a good win because Nebraska gave up 70 points in its last game? Tech fans your team went 7-7 playing in the ACC,Georgia went 12-2 playing in the SEC and could finish in the top five. UGA’s defense was fine once the DC made the adjustment of going to a completely vanilla defensive scheme in the fourth quarter. Just wish he had done it sooner. Lucky to get thru the game with so few defensive linemen available. Very impressed with Murray and the offense for putting up the numbers they did against the #1 pass defense in the nation without the benefit of the top three wideouts. Offense will be loaded next year regardless of who plays quarterback.

Glad for the win in spite of our coaching, Its nice to have superior athletes who can overcome poor coaching, clock management and discipline. Marc Richt should talk to Mike Smith about how to handle penalties. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to solving it. Also if it were not for coaching refusing Murray’s plea to spike the ball, we might be in the national championship game. When the going gets tough our coaches choke every time. Thank you to the athletes

Sflanagen,
Mason is more accurate than Murray and his arm is not as strong. But you are correct in he can’t extend plays like Murray. Mason will be a fine qb I think but we just don’t know. Murray is one of the best to ever wear the G. But people can’t understand that. And I would like to ask when will people give Bobo the credit he deserves? Other than the carolina game the offense was unstoppable. 37 points a game. Does anyone have a clue what it takes to do that join the SEC

@dawglova–Amen. I was not by any means a Bobo fan before this season. But hard to argue w/ a literally record setting season. The guy deserves a raise based off of this season. He’s young everywhere but QB and arguably WR but even there we have had to depend on young guys and other inexperienced players.
Bobo deserves A LOT of credit this year. That being said, I do wish he would focus on using Marshall as a shock play runner which I believe would be most effective spelling Gurley within the same series.
But no real complaints w/ Bobo this year.

Statistically, Nebraska had one of the best pass defenses in the Country. Murray threw a couple of bad picks, but he was also shorted a touchdown when T.K. let a perfectly placed pass slip right through his hands.
All in all, tip your cap to these Bulldogs who gave us an outstanding 2012 season. In my humble opinion, we have seen the last of Murray, Tree, Jones, and Geathers, along with many other great senior players, in a Bulldog uniform. Tip your cap, raise a glass, and send these Bulldogs out with class!

There is no way AM is better than David Greene! DG was the ultimate 4Q QB. ALWAYS brought the Dawgs down the field and scored AM is a great QB no doubt one of the best we have ever had but DG was THE BEST and I have no ties to the guy. I want to see Hutson Mason next year – I watched him at Lassiter as I was a Walton Dad and he is very good… more accurate on the long ball and more consistent than AM. We are blessed with several great QB’s and don’t forget Lamay he is top notch.

UGA’s only problem this year was defensive line depth. Losing Aubry Jones exposed it. Losing Jenkins made it worse.
That said, my only issue today was the big mouth who told TV that Mitchell was out for the game. Richt said it correctly at half time, we don’t comment on injuries. That would simply aid the other team. Then at the end of halftime, the field announcer asks Pelini if he will make any adjustments knowing Mitchell won’t play. Bo said he hadn’t known that.
Why help the other team, and why violate team policy and Mitchell’s privacy?

I think we will see more of Marshall doing some different things like the wildcat today. I am not a huge fan of the wildcat but it was a different look. I think Marshall was banged up a little most of the season and with a young line having both backs in at the same time while probably taking out a tight end just wasn’t in the plans. I think you will see it next year with both backs having ahead under their belts.

Destin Dawg are you sure you were at the right game? So the 30 yard perfect pass to Lynch, the double pump bomb to TK,the 49 yard pass to Conley, the 2 pt roll out pass to McGowan, the back shoulder pass to Mitchell and then the perfect blitz read to a split screen pass for a 87 yard TD were all just heaved up TD’s to the receivers huh!
Give the kid credit, dang he threw 428 yards for 5 TD’S and TK knows he should have caught that last perfectly thrown pass to him in the end zone and that would have gave AM 6 TD passes with 450 plus yards of passing against a pretty good pass D! Yea he started out slow but so did the entire team, maybe ABC told them to keep it interesting for the first half.
People STOP the hating on AM, he is an ELITE QB and if you don’t see that then you have NEVER played a down of football in your life. I was an average HS QB and NO I’m not a recruiting coordinator but I’m not BLIND either…

Ok I concur about Lamay but I have been around UGA a long time, I played for Korky Kell went to UGA in the day of Herschel confer with my heavy UGA donors/supporters not that that means anything but what I see in Murray is a David Greene great College QB but probably won’t make it in the NFL. Now back to HM I may be totally wrong cause yaneverno but he is spot on accuracy long ball dont know on short and outs. Don’t get me wrong I love AM and hope he stays his seniority, maturity, professionalism and being an outstanding person would probably be best for UGA next year I just don’t see his worth going up in the draft next year he is a first rounder if he goes and that is huge dollars for he and his family. HM is unproven and if he staggers then everyone will start calling him out and want Brice in so it is a carousel ..go figure.

-All of our Jr’s leave to go Pro

I coach qbs and offense at a south metro high school and my comments about lemay were not meant to bash the kid. I met him and he seems to be a very polite and decent kid. I just know for qbs it sometimes takes longer to develop and he just hasn’t grasped it yet. With mason being the heir apparent I think lemay sees the writing on the wall and will transfer.Ramsay will need time so he is a non factor for the next year and a half. Murray will be a steal in the draft for a team like buffalo or kc probably 2nd to third round. With #1 picks being so valuable I think he will wait a while on draft day but folks cannot name 5 better qns in this draft. He will go because of this unless he just feels he has unfinished business at uga.

Murray hasn’t overcome any mental anything, you make it sound like he is a head case. He made a bad throw on one pick and Marshall was supposed to screen on the other and wasn’t there. Went to the flat instead. Murray out of high school had plus arm strength and you thinkin Greene was gonna be a pro has me question your football knowledge like the rest of these morons. Come on man

Great win!!! They all are. We have to be realistic, however. Grantham cannot coach. UGA had an exorbitant amount of talent on defense and could not stop water. The only thing that won 12 games in the toughest football conference in America was our offense. Bobo and company were the reason we won.
I trust Coach Richt to make the necessary changes. He is a good man and will do what is needed.

Clemson should finish ahead of UGA in the final polls. They beat a better higher ranked team with a much better defense. Neb. gave up 70 points to Wis. and 63 to Ohio State. I just want to say that let’s all look at the game today. Our Dawgs were up against a great national team with one of if not the best QB’s in the league. AM started off a little rough (reminds me of Falcons) but got his composure second half – he is always a little nervous around the home crowd with tons of family and High School people around. What I saw was he overcame what plagued him the last two year s in the same situation.I could see it in his stature that he was not going to freak out…He took command second half and owned Nebraska. Our Defense was less than stellar which made AM look not as good but he was spot on. . As with most great QB’s they are only as good as their OL.

I’m comparing the two to today, Jan 1st 2013. Can AM become as good as RW, maybe but unlikely because AM doesn’t have the elusiveness and speed that RW has. I’m not putting all my stock into elusiveness and speed but that’s a big part of what makes RW so good, his ability to extend the play. I compare AM to RW all the time and in the right system AM will be able to shine like RW. And for the record I hope that one day AM is WAY better then RW, I have tons of respect for AM. 01′ player

I agree about right now. I am speaking obviously of the future. And yes you were right about extending plays and the fact that the system makes all the difference in the world. Let’s say for instance green bay needed a qb, that AR wasn’t there but everyone else was. I think Murray would be successful day one in that offense. On the flip side let’s say he goes to Arizona or Oakland. He will never make it. And in 2001 I was play in qb at LMU. We would not have won the freaking game today without Aaron Murray. There are probably only 2 or 3 QBs in the freaking nation that could have won that game today the way our grossly overrated defense was playing and we’ve got one of them. Our defense isn’t “less than stellar.”. They are just plain bad. There’s no other way to cut it.

If AM is projected as a late pick and has a chance to make a team he would probably be foolish not to go. Even if he ends up holding a clipboard on the sideline he will make far more money that the average college grad. He’s already finished his undergrad and is working on his master’s. The lowest paid NFL back up QB is Matt Baker of the Buffalo Bills, who will earn a rookie league minimum of $ 202,520 for the year, most earn WAY more. Because of the things you read about AM’s study, preparation, and work ethic I could see him eventually going into coaching. A few years as a second, even third, team pro QB could only enhance his opportunities.

I never throw my UGA shirt in the corner. Fact is, UGA hasn’t gone undefeated since ‘80, the year before my freshman year. I’ve been waiting a damn long time to see it happen again. If the SEC doesn’t perform, then Dawgs could go 12-0 and still not be ranked high enough to make the NC. Ask Boise State. The SEC is the best conference in the nation and I want the voters up north and out west to know it. That is why I will hold my nose and pull for Alabama in the NC. I hate Alabama, I wouldn’t piss on them if the whole team was on fire. But I will still pull for them against ND. It’s just principle. UGA’s best chance to win it all was this year. Except for the SC game and the third quarter of the SEC championship game, they played well. With Clemson, SC, and LSU in the first 4 games next year, it will be tough to be 4-0, if they are they should beat UF and be in the SEC championship. If they win that they will play for the NC. Murray can become a good qb but he sure isn’t one yet. Have you even followed his career? Some of the ignorance here makes me want to vomit.

90% of the comments on this blog contain negative statements, when fans of UGA should be congratulating them for a good game, win and quit complaining like a bunch of jerks. It is worth noting that a few times, even the announcers noted that UGA fans were very demanding and quick to complain, and it seems they are spot on, with that observation. UGA goes into the off season with a good win, against a fairly good Nebraska team, and most likely a top 5 finish for the season.
I am proud of these young men, and the coaches as well. Celebrate the win and the season. Everyone associated with the DAWGS did a good job, and yes, it hurts a little to fall just a little short of playing for the NC, but these DAWGS represented the university and the state of Georgia proudly, and I for one an darn proud of them.

They play for keeps in the NFL. They don’t simply knock you down, they pulverize you! I don’t think Murray will fair too well trying to see over those NFL linemen who are faster and more lethal than college. Frankly, I think Murray should stay for his own good and enjoy next year before going pro. There is a huge difference between the two and he can really have a blast next year. Somehow, I believe he’s going though. His value will increase next year though.

Reading these blogs is like watching Georgia’s basketball team play. Painful! Why do the editors not just post cogent, intelligent posts that are relevant to the actual football game? This has become a venue for uneducated football fans, and disgruntled fans from other schools to have their pathethic 10 seconds of dysfunctional fame. Either you are a Dog fan or not. If you are not a Dog fan, you are a total joke for even caring what real Dog fans post on these blogs. Come on AJC writers, get some class and keep half these posts off the internet. You are only encouraging moronic, backward people who cannot spell and who obviously never graduated from the University of Georgia. FYI, even Clemson fans who live around me do not think they have a chance to beat Georgia next year.

If Murray leaves, funnily enough, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to me. The guy’s throws are still as wild as if he was a nervous rookie pitcher in the World Series. Until he tones that down, his NFL career will go the way of David Greene’s.

Tell it like it is. Unbelievable! It was a great win, not pretty, but a win is a win! Murray is a stand up guy and if he leaves I wish him the best. If not, he has the potential to have even a better year next year with that offense!
Let’s just enjoy this year and start thinking about next season around July/August. Some of you act as if your life depends on how well a bunch of 18-22 year olds pplay a game. Go buy a life!

Moist dawg,
I am just call in it like I see it. I DO think that Murray can be very successful. I used to be skeptical until I saw him make unbelievable throw after throw in person. He was the best college qb at that camp and made some throws that were better than some of the pro qbs. Cutler and a few others commented they didn’t know his arm was that good. I think that with his work ethic and footwork and mech. He has a good chance. The kid has been dominant at two levels so far. I know better than most that doesn’t mean he will do so in the league though. We will just have to see. But I don’t need to make up anything on my resume to impress you or anyone else. I was just trying to give an honest opinion on here when others were bashing the kid after a good win and very good season. I get sick of uga fans like you that know nothing but continue to spew your verbal diarrhea like you are the only one who gets it. A whole lot of coaches think very highly of coach richt coach Bob and A.Murray. I would tend to value their opinions way more than the opinion of someone who is always a negative jerk and has never played the game at any
level

Murray will have a NFL career like a typical USC qb. Cassell, Sanchez or Lienart. He is inaccurate and has no arm strength.
This defense was a total undisciplined joke. Was that the UGA record for personal fouls?

I like the way some guy here stated that if you take away all the good plays and all the big plays Murray made then he wouldn’t have done so good….lol……The Dawgs were without 3 of their top 4 receivers out Murray Still threw for 5TD’s and over 400 yds against the top rated pass defense in the nation….this guy sounds like Skip Bayless saying “I would have never picked Nebraska if I had knownthat Murray was going have that kind of day so I really didn’t make a wrong pick”. ….lol

Nice Win. Way to come back in the 2nd half and play well. 12 wins in any division is a great year. Give credit to the players who really put it on the line in the 2nd half. With our top receiver out nice to have young players step up and make some great catches and did you see Conley (87 yards) run. That kid is fast and can make some great catches. Looking forward to bringing in some new talent on defense who will play the run. Can’t understand why we have gaps in the middle so often. Bring in some guys who will hit.
Fast year in 2012 and already looking forward to 2013. Happy New Year Dawg Fans.

Cannot believe people are ripping Murray. Wasn’t he the MVP? How many college QBs are better than Murray?
Not a UGA fan but they showed up and won in a game they hoped they would not have to play. Have to respect that. I remember Bama got smoked by an lesser team (Utah) when they lost SEC championship because even St. Nick could not motivate them.

Malcolm got a concussion on the kick-off return where he decided to run straight at the guy and head-butt him at about the 15 yard line. Not sure what he was thinking there. Maybe the concussion happened when he field the ball?!?

Does Aaron Murray realize he won’t amount to anything in the NFL?
must be nice to give up a pick-six and another interception and still be the MVP

I am so prod of Aaron Murray and the rest of the Georgia team and coaching staff.
So, you Juniors this year. You’re going to be Seniors next year. Time to step up now and set the tone for success next year.
Set the bar high for the winter workouts, turn the team into a bunch of gym rats pumping iron and lets toughen up even more and take the SEC and the BCS in 2013.
Go Dogs. GATA.

I believe Aaron should stay for us as well as to work on things just like he has each year with the dawgs! But if he goes I would not blame him! Here are some reasons! Most NFL team backups are old veterans or young so a guy with an above average football IQ would be great. Teams like the Steelers need to upgrade their backup and a guy like Murray could be that guy! Another reason is Murray threw 4+ touchdown passes to four different receivers. He adjusted well after horrible first quarters against Florida and Nebraska! The back shoulder throw has become his go to throw and with some of the greats in the NFL he will live off of that! He annihilated 4 bowl teams GT, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Nebraska with his arm. He also played well against the vaunted Alabama and second half against Florida.

By the way just to show how good our offensive line has become we are the number one team in yds per play in the nation!!!!! Our 2 running backs average 6 yards + per carry! And on Chris Conley’s touchdown Gates check blocked his man and blocked a DB with an angle 7 yds down the field. Next year if we get Tunsel we will have quality depth and experience at each position! + Marshall and Gurley have improved as blockers!!!! I love our chances!!!!
