THEY SAID IT
“It looked to me like we were a little more tired than they were. But I think our guys did a good job of sucking it up when they were tired. It was a good bit warmer than the weather we were practicing in and certainly Athens was a lot cooler. But we fought through. And when you make a big play or two, all of a sudden that gives you a boost of energy.”
— Georgia coach Mark Richt, on the Bulldogs’ slow start
“I’m so proud of Jarvis. Jarvis has been such a breath of fresh air for us at Georgia. Coming from Southern Cal, sitting out a year and doing a super job rallying the scout team … We already knew he was a special player, then we realized what a special person he was and he just played tremendously on the field for us and has been a great leader for us.”
— Richt on junior outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who set the single-season sack record.
“When I went into the locker room at halftime, I thought Coach Bobo was going to hit me up side the head.”
— Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray on his two-interception first half.
“I give credit to Georgia. That’s a good football team. You know, at the end of the day we had our opportunities. There’s some situations where you just have to make some plays and Georgia made them. We didn’t. This was just one of those games.”
— Nebraska coach Bo Pelini
I felt we had a great game plan and they they just came out and hit us with some big throws. A lot came down to third down and their guys just made some plays and stuff. They made more plays than we did at the end of the day.”
— Nebraska linebacker Will Compton on the Bulldogs’ passing so well on their No. 1-ranked pass defense
“On one he said (Murray) was out of the pocket and you guys saw the play. And on the other one, the one on Taylor (Martinez) it was a screen pass and he got hit. He went down throwing the screen. I mean, I find myself shaking my head.”
— Pelini on no intentional grounding being called on Murray and Martinez being called for it on back-to-back, second-half possessions
“In the offseason we’re just going to be pushing that much harder just knowing we came so close to going to the national championship. It’s not like we got blown out or something. So while we’re working out, we’ll be thinking about all the little things because that could be the difference in the outcome of getting those five yards and getting to the national championship game. We’re excited because we feel like this is the first win of 2013. We start next season with Clemson and we’re ready to play them now.”
— Georgia freshman tailback Todd Gurley on prospects of next season.

The whole starting offense should be back except for Brown and King. Murray could go, too. I hope he gets a good insurance policy and comes back. He could wind up owning the all-time passing record book. We have a few holes to fill on D….Great bunch of Dawgs this year! Thanks for the memories.

Forgot to say that I am SO glad that Chris Conley had a stellar game. He is the team cheerleader and had a mishap to catch that pass in the SEC championship. Not too concerned about the offense next year but the defense gives me nightmares. Losing Jarvis and Ogletree is huge! The defense is already suffering from lack of depth. With the shellacking Bama gave the “D” line is scary for next year. Even Nebraska worked them over pretty good and ran the ball well. Oh well, it’s a long time til September.

Aaron Murray has got to comeback next year, I don’t us doing so great next year if Hutson Mason (inexperienced) starts with @ Clemson, South Carolina, & LSU being in the first month of September!! Aaron Murray played well against a dominant Alabama defense and a dominant Nebraska secondary, with the O-line, tight ends, and receivers returning next year, if Aaron Murray plays like that for the rest of his career (if he returns), he could make history for the 2013 season of the Bulldogs, I feel it in my heart too! Our defense will be find, Jordan Jenkins & Damian Swann will be returning & backups in the sidelines who’s had playtime as well…. Unless we have any suspensions, 2013 will be a great year for the bulldogs! 2014 will be a rebuilding year for Georgia!

I hope all the players keep in mind the schedule to start the season–Clemson will not be the usual cupcake to open the season. And we already know how much fun SC brings to town. It is time to stop this losing to them streak. LSU is not going to be an easy match either.
Everyone needs to be ready for these–NO SUSPENSIONS PLEASE!!! And yes they will be pee testing when you get to school, especially after you return from Spring Break. No selfish or stupid behavior this time guys. With almost the entire starting Offense returning and lots of experienced players reloading the Defense (not to mention some real talent sheding red shirts and some more immediate impact true freshmen coming in,) this could be a really great season. You will need all hands available to make that happen.

To the moron trolls who may start posting I want you to note that Murray HAS beaten 2 ranked teams this year and kept the DAWGS in the game against Bama. He also was the bowl MVP and set a passing record while playing without his top 3 receivers against the #1 pass defense in the nation. If you slam him then it will immediately identify you as a “moron troll” which usually means you are a techie!!!!!

You forgot Jonathan Taylor (who is a beast), Ramik Wilson, and Amarlo Herrera. The defense was a complete underachiever this year – I expect it to be better next year.

Right now what’s standing between us and a national championship is Todd Grantham. He did not have a good year. After getting torched for 350 yards rushing in the SECCG, I saw little to no improvement in the bowl game. I’m pretty sure my grandmother could run through some of those holes that offenses seem to be able to open up on us with ease. Huge swaths of the field are often completely unmanned. Grantham needs to go back to the drawing board because whatever he’s doing isn’t working. I sometimes wonder if our defense is too complicated for its own good. Maybe we should scale back on all the fancy blitzes and “packages” and just concentrate on the basics, like tackling. I am not all that torn up about all this “NFL talent” leaving. I think they’ve been pretty disappointing for the most part, except for Jarvis Jones. We’ll be better off with younger guys in there that are hungry and all about team. They can’t be much worse than what we saw this year.
Offense is bad azz though. Bobo did a great job this year.

Great win Dawgs! Look forward to our offense next year. However, many think that our defense will drop significantly next season. I thought it was pretty poor this year. Especially with the talent. I think next year with all the reviews coming in negative on them they will put together a better defense, can’t get worse against the run, than this year. Not saying a NC by any means, but the defense will surprise most people next year.
My guess would that Florida will be favored to win the East next year followed by South Carolina. Hopefully that will push this defense even more. Clemson will be one heck of a test for that defense in game one. I was very impressed with their offense against LSU. I think they will have most of their offense coming back.
Great year Dawgs!

Did you ever wonder why the vast majority of players coming out of junior colleges go there in the first place? They usually are too dumb to get into a good university right out of high school despite all the concessions granted them because of their athletic skills. Of course, there are exceptions, i.e Cam Newton who is just a thief but a generational player in college. For any decent university to sign them to a scholarship shows that the university is willing to take the bottom of the barrel as long as there is a shot they might help the team get better.

To the Bama fans. You’re D lineman getting his hand up is the ONLY reason you will be playing next week and don’t forget it. Murray was throwing a back shoulder throw to Mitchell in the end zone and he had beaten your guy. The ONLY reason you are playing next week.

On Murray’s 2 interceptions. I wasn’t surprised Murray had multiple turnovers in a Bowl game, considering his track record (3 turnovers vs. UCF, 3 turnovers vs. Mich St). I figured Nebraska would throw in a couple of new looks they hadn’t showed yet with some weeks to prepare for the game, on one of those picks, the guy dropped off the TE into the middle for the pick, I think Murray thought Nebraska would go Cover 2 there, was a new look. The pick 6 changed the momentum of the game, and the lb saw it early from the way the wr was trying to block him, I don’t think Murray ever saw the lb there who jumped the route, a goal of the matchup zone Nebraksa runs. Murray throws most of his interceptions from his own 20-40 yard line, and this Bowl game proved no different with the pick 6, it’s still, after 4 years at UGA, Murray’s blindspot area, he hasn’t corrected it yet.
Nebraska tried to stay behind the pass receivers to prevent the big play, so you go back shoulder a lot, and Bobo called that a bunch.
Conley made some great run after catchs, caught the little 1 yard throw and turned on the jets turning it into an 87 yard td, great blocking by Lynch, King, and the OL on that play. The pick plays on 3rd down, and the crossing routes, seemed to be a new Bobo wrinkle he hadn’t shown on video much. Thought it was a great way to attack the middle of the field against the match up zone. Also liked the draws and screens on 3rd down and the Wildcat early, seemed to keep that safety out of the box, because someone had to drop out of the box and go over and man up on Murray–Gurley bruned tem big on a Wildcat formation. Bobo called a great offensive game.
Liked the lb on rb matchup, a weakness of the matchup zone, and Bobo exploited it with a play designed for Marshall who beat the LB for an easy td.
Bobo saved his newest looks, like the crossing patterns, and screens, for 3rd down, the offense converted a high percentage on 3rd down, so it really did work out.
thank goodness the offense played well, and Bobo’s gamplan worked, because once again, Grantham’s D gave up a load of points to a ranked team, for the 7th time in the last 8 games vs. ranked teams. really dissapointed in Grantham’s D against ranked teams. And Nebraska had 2 rb’s average @ 6 yards a carry. Lucky for Grantham, Ogletree forced and recovered a fumble, and Swann picked 2 passess off or else Nebraska would have scored 50 points.

Our defense just had SENIORITIS this year, they were so focused on the NFL and they weren’t as active as they were in the 2011 season! the 2013 defense will have a majority of sophomores and juniors including some from junior colleges! Todd Grantham better make some corrections during the offseason though!

For all the hype about our defense, remember that the line was:
Abry Jones, 308
John Jenkins, 358
Garrison Smith, 297
Reserves:
Kwame Gaethers, 355
Ray Drew, 284
Cornelius Washington, 268 (really an OLB)
With Jones and Jenkins out, the line was depleted and we needed younger guys to step up. Of that rotation, only Smith, Drew and possibly Gaethers will return. Of course, the normal for each year is that the next guys need to step up, but this is the weakness we saw exploited by Bama and Nebraska. Their offensive lines were able to get a push and we needed to use speed to counter their power.
Mayes will help next year but we need line depth of defense. Taylor, Thornton and Bailey are in the system and need to join in the fun by becoming the forces they were recruited to be.

You earn your way to the dome by winning your division. The SEC CG pits the winner from the East against the winner from the West. UGA won the East. Therefore, UGA “deserved” to ‘be in the dome.” Can you comprehend the process?

It was so great to win the bowl game and go out with a win. Everyone knew that Nebraska had one of the best rushing attacks. Nebraska also had the #1 pass defense. Let’s hope our new DL coach teaches these new group of guys some fundamentals. Our defense will be young and thirsty. We still had blown coverages with our veteran defense. The off season is going to be very important for the defense. It was the same deal with our OL at the beginning of this season. I HOPE MURRAY STAYS. HE IS THE LEADER.

I’ve made a couple negative comments toward CTG myself. Maybe I just couldn’t see it but J Jenkins just didn’t look like he “plugged the middle” like he should on run plays. So, I’m still not quite sold on the 3-4. I might be wrong.
But, I’m really proud how the D really looked gassed yet made the stops in the 4th quarter. They hunkered down for sure.
Yes, we have soon gooduns returning on both sides of the ball; and hopefully another good recruiting class. But to start predicting wins and championships is foolhardy. That being said, the Bulldogs will probably start next season ranked top 5; easily within the top 10. Remember how that’s worked out a couple times? Ask USC; even FSU.

Florida’s problem is pretty easy to diagnose, and it is the lack of a decent passing QB. The kid that played the game was originally recruited for Urban Myers offense, and doesn’t have the technique right now to play in an offense where the QB needs to be able to pass accurately. I thought they had a kid on the bench that could throw the ball better than the guy they struck with all through the game. Shame on Mushcamp for doing a pretty poor job with this team. Football is still a game where you have to score some points, and Florida needs to find a QB that can produce, in order to do that.

Get over it Bo. You didn’t have SEC depth and you got whipped in the 4th. That’s how SEC football works. Plus, the Dawgs were coming off a very emotional loss that would have put them in the NC game. Do you think they gave their absolute best effort against Nebraska!?!?! And Nebraska was geeked like they were playing for a NC. The better team, by far, won by 2 TD’s. Could have been much worse. @RedAndBlackDawg… actually Driskel had a pretty decent record. 63.7% passing and an 11-1 record with the toughest sked in the country. ‘Course, they also had the #5 rated D.
For all you who’ve bad-mouthed coach Richt, wanting him to be more fiery and show more emotion….case in point Pelini and Muschamp, and to some extent even Les Miles. Sometimes fiery and hot emotions lead to seeming out of control. To me it sometimes looks like a lack of discipline. Both can become traits of the team: out of control and lack of discipline. Coach Richt shows plenty of emotion; it’s just controlled. Remaining calm under adversity is a good trait, contrary to what some Dawg fans seem to think.
I’ll have to admit that Flawduh was the only SEC team I didn’t ‘root for’ during the bowls. And them not even close to selling their ticket allotment shows how mullet-headed the Gaytor fans can be.

Great season! Even though the defense’s stats were not as good as 2011, they showed both in the SECCG and the Bowl game, that they could play all 4 quarters. Offense was absolutely incredible. Definitely a roller coaster of a season but it’s part of it. As stated above, just got to keep these kids out of trouble (easier said than done, they are “kids”), sign a hell of a recruiting class, and get ready for September! Go Dawgs!!

@Jborodwwg,
Most of the kids passes were short ones to his backs, and though it pads his statistics, it doesn’t show him to be a very good passer over all. He also hasn’t really learned how to throw a touch pass. He throws like he is trying to put a hole into his receivers body.
As for folks getting on Richt for not being fiery, I agree 100% with your sentiments. The team responds to his style of on field manner and unlike coaches like Will, and Pelini, his look, when a kid goofs up, says more than grabbing the kids face mask will ever do. A kid knows when he has made a mistake, so humiliating him on national TV, is not going to change that fact. He does get on the officials though when they make a bad call. This year, the SEC had it’s fair share of them from their crews. Kids respond favorably to a coach that has an even demeanor, and corrects mistakes in practice, and not on the field.

UGA's 2013 schedule
January 4th, 2013
10:54 am
IF UGA gets one or two more BIG MEN for the middle of their D line, with the talent already in place, UGA will be just fine. The new D starters will be hungry and yes, they will want to build their fame and notoriety for when they can move on to the NFL. UGA is loaded on D and has some quality depth arriving this month and in July.
UGA will simply reload. I do not fear LSU or Clemson or SC. Keep in mind, UGA could Lise two of these THREE and STILL WIN the EAST IF….IF we go undefeated after playing them and we only lose one SEC game among them. Stranger things could happen, then we culd again play in the SEC CG and somehow win …….. And possibly still with two early season losses play in a top level BCS bowl.
Sky is the limit for UGA in 2013 and 2014.
Go Dogs.

I would like to see the Georgia running backs get on Hershel’s workout program too increase their stamina, endurance and overall physical abilities. I can’t understand why Georgia would not at least ask Hershel and hire him in assisting the strenght and conditioning program.
He would be a great asset to the program. To Coach Grantham please hire the very best coach available and tell your assistants we are proud to have them and you at Georgia.
The offensive line did a great job and kudos to them and the coaching staff. The wide receivers and tight ends are solid and I hope Hutson Mason get more involved in the offense. I do hope Murray comes back for another year to try and win the Heisman and improve his qb ranking for the NFL.
To Coach Richt .. congradulations and thanks for supporting your team and coaches.
