Georgia has a ‘Marshall Plan’ for Nebraska in Capital One Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. — After Todd Gurley ran for 1,260 yards this season – and 122 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in the SEC Championship game – the tendency is to think that fellow freshman Keith Marshall is a less valuable back for Georgia at this stage in his young career.

Marshall had just two carries against Alabama. But offensive coordinator Mike Bobo insisted Saturday that Marshall remains more of a 1-B option to Gurley. Injuries and extenuating circumstances, he said, had more to do with Marshall’s reduced presence toward the end of the season than Gurley’s special talents.

“(Marshall) did not get as many touches in the Alabama game, but that’s just how the game went and how the other guy was running the ball,” Bobo said during a Capital One Bowl news conference Saturday at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. “But we’ve got a big plan for Keith in this game, and expect him to make plays and play well in this game. He’s running good.”

Marshall have fewer yards rushing than Gurley (723) and fewer overall carries (109 to 199). But he averaged more yards per carry (6.6 to 6.3) and had more runs of 50 or more yards (four to one).

Marshall was listed with a shoulder contusion heading into the SEC title game and he battled knee soreness the second half of the season. Bobo said the time off between the end of the season and bowl practices helped Marshall.

“He’ll be fresh and ready to go on Tuesday,” Bobo said.

This has to be a first P-Cola Dog.

Gurley and Marshall are an impressive duo. LSU has it’s own 4 headed monster in Hill, Ford, Ware and Hilliard and that’s after starting tailback Alfred Blue was lost early in the season.

Good luck again the ‘Huskers.

Excellent, look forward to seeing more of Marshall, who came to UGA receiving more hype than Gurley and had his share of outstanding runs this season.

About 4 weeks to late for the Marshall impact. Bama managed to get both their backs into the game and UGA never even tried that night. I felt Marshall got tooled by Coach Bobo in Atlanta and his big plan for Marshall now is simply a makeup call.

Get used to being behind Gurley, i hope we don’t start trying to make him happy to the point that we get in the Joe Cox syndrome, where he played and it didn’t matter if we had someone better….

What’s pathetic is that a fan of a school which embodies everythng wrong with college athletics wants to come into a UGA blog and talk about lsu.
Root for UGA all you want but as for me, I hope clemson rolls you by 40.

I agree with Mcclenny_dawg. We need Gurley to be the “up the middle” power back, and Marshall to be the “outside blazer” back. Give Marshall a little space whether it be via a lateral, shuttle/screen pass, etc., and the end result could be just as effective as Gurley’s power running.

What is the fascination with this “outside in space run”, that has never ever worked? Marshall does his best work up the middle. The point is not how big he is, its how quick he is into the LBs before anybody can grab him.

UGA should win this easily. ABC is likely worried that by halftime UGA is so far ahead that viewers will switch to the other games on at the same time (Gator, Heart of Dallas, Outback).

I just hope the team doesn’t get over-hyped with the Wisconsin score and decide to coast. Stop the run and grind out first downs giving the defense a needed rest. Don’t worry about scoring too quickly, it wears the defense down putting them back on the field. Control the clock! I understand the Nebraska defense ranks about 96th. Bobo must be licking his chops! If that’s true, how in heck did they get to this bowl? Oh, I know, they must have seen UGA’s game films, especially vs. South Carolina.

Marshall was banged-up the last half of the season………….Gurley is as good a down-hill back as the SEC has………..mixing it up with a healthly Marshall wil make Georgia pretty damn stout. Now for dreaming…………….add AK to the mix next year, catching balls out of a slot position………..gotta make DCs around the SEC shake in their shoes………………Come-on Alvin…………Nick will just sit you the first year anyway……………Come to Georgia where you can play NOW………….Here’s hoping…………RED

Nebraska might be able to run the ball but they won’t be able to keep up with the Dawgs explosive O… We throw the ball 10x better than anybody that they have played and are way more balanced than any Big Ten offense they’ve seen. I expect the D to be better against the run… how we handle Martinez will be the difference. Georgia will put up points, the question will be whether it is a blowout or a shootout.

I bleed red and black, but I root for LSU if they are playing, albeit not against us. Great place to tailgate, great food, passionate fans, stadium earthquakes, etc. Florida on the other hand is as cool as a goiter. Gotta disagree with Moistdog about not rooting for rivals. Sometimes universities in the SEC are more alike than we’d care to admit.
But to hell with Florida no matter what.

TiDog… did you even read the article? Marshall was injured. He got a couple of carries and didn’t produce. I bet if we ran him later in the game and he didn’t produce you’d be saying that Bobo screwed up not going with Gurley. Jeez…

Jim

They should have mentioned his injuries before the Bama game instead of Bobo saying they were going to go with the hot back in Gurley. The two runs Marshall made were just up the middle poorly blocked…. I wonder how some of the back recruits feel about that kind of comment. This is not NFL Bobo needs to take care of his sarcastic comments. He will have a credibility weakness with recruits if he is not careful.

NCDawg

AltamahaDawg – Wisconsin ripped the Nebraska D on the edges… something that hardly ever works in the SEC. Our guys are as fast as Monte Ball and we throw the ball WAY better than any Big Ten team. We will try the edge if for no other reason than to spread them out. SEC defenses are way to fast to run outside against but obviously Nebraska has some speed deficiencies in their LB corps. Obviously they will try to reposition their LB’s to offset this… that creates other opportunities. Murray will check out of the play if they give him something juicier inside.

Jim… what? You don’t broadcast injuries…especially if you plan to play the guy. It wasn’t a sarcastic remark… he was just stating the obvious. Gurley was running it well.

I would like to see Marshall play more in the slot while Gurley is in the backfield. I would have really wanted to see Marshall on the field more than Rhett McGowen. It would open the playbook up to more speed sweeps and screens if Marshall played more in the slot.
