Georgia has a ‘Marshall Plan’ for Nebraska in Capital One Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. — After Todd Gurley ran for 1,260 yards this season – and 122 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in the SEC Championship game – the tendency is to think that fellow freshman Keith Marshall is a less valuable back for Georgia at this stage in his young career.

Marshall had just two carries against Alabama. But offensive coordinator Mike Bobo insisted Saturday that Marshall remains more of a 1-B option to Gurley. Injuries and extenuating circumstances, he said, had more to do with Marshall’s reduced presence toward the end of the season than Gurley’s special talents.

“(Marshall) did not get as many touches in the Alabama game, but that’s just how the game went and how the other guy was running the ball,” Bobo said during a Capital One Bowl news conference Saturday at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. “But we’ve got a big plan for Keith in this game, and expect him to make plays and play well in this game. He’s running good.”

Marshall have fewer yards rushing than Gurley (723) and fewer overall carries (109 to 199). But he averaged more yards per carry (6.6 to 6.3) and had more runs of 50 or more yards (four to one).

Marshall was listed with a shoulder contusion heading into the SEC title game and he battled knee soreness the second half of the season. Bobo said the time off between the end of the season and bowl practices helped Marshall.

“He’ll be fresh and ready to go on Tuesday,” Bobo said.

A bowl Game is nothing but DISTRACTIONS. In the old days the players didn’t have all the commitment when they arrived in the town. Sponsor Meet & Greet Meals, Children’s hospital visits and such Photo Ops. The Game is there but so are many other things to get in the players heads. Wait until the Playoffs start. The HOST cities & Sponsors will not have all this crap to make the players do because there will be no time for it. The Bowls will not like the playoffs I can tell you. The ROSE Parade will be a nothing event around the game. TV and far away fans will love the playoffs but the Host Cities and Old Bowl Sponsors will be MAD as Hell over the playoff in place of the BOWL Games. Just you wait and see.

Mike how you going to have a parade before the game? You going to do it Sat morning at 8 am for a Noon kickoff? There was the Chic-fil-A parade today in the ATL but if the playoffs are played back to back weeks on Sat the Bowl Stuff that makes the sponsors money and lets all the big wigs party will be gone. Just you wait and see. I bet the ROSE will pull out soon enough and want to have the Rose Bowl with the best match up it can get. I think the Sugar and NoLa will be wanting a BOWL PARTY game back and not just a weekend playoff game. I long week full of things to do for fans during the holidays makes these towns a lot of money that will go away with Playoff games in continuing weeks through the holidays. Just wait and SEE. TV money is not going to make up the money some of these bowl town get over the holidays.

So BOOBOO says Marshall was hurt. Well if Gurley was so hot and doing so well, which he was by the way, why in the heck did BOOBOO abandon the run with that passing crap? Alabama ran because they HAD to, UGA shut down their passing attack!! Why did BOOBOO stop running the ball when it was working and had BAMA on their heels? Marshall not getting more touches is just another “lame” excuse by BOOBOO who can’t coach his way out of a paper bag!! He wastes more talent than any coach I have ever seen!!

It makes all the sense in the world to go recruit these highly talented 4 & 5 star recruits, only to have them ride the bench, ala Jay Rome in the 2nd half of the SECCG!! Everything was set up for Richt to FINALLY get his first NC as a head coach this year, with ND as the opponent and they BLEW IT!! As long as BOOBOO is the OC, UGA will NEVER win a NC until we get an OC who can call a game and USE the talent you have like they do at other programs!! It is beyind pathetic when you look across NFL rosters and see all the talent from UGA playing well, then wonder why didn’t they win more in college………non-coachiiiiing!!!

Does anyone ever find this guy’s column enlightening? I live here in Atlanta and naturally I read articles about the Dawgs. Bradley and Schultz will provide some insight when they write about UGA but this column seems to be little more than a PR puff piece. I would understand it if it were published in the Athens paper.

Cue the original hillbilly comments, keen observations about our coaching situation, insider analysis on the state of the UT football program, questions about why are you on a UGA blog, etc.

The gamecocks radio station her in SC run the usc-UGA game ‘ highlights non-stop. In fact, they we be rerunning them for the next 20 years. “The year USC totally dominated Mark Richt;s UGA” Thanks, Coach, for us DAWG alumni to have to listen to…..Thanks, for the unpreparedness……Now go blow out NEB. and get some redemption for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know but it seems to me that Gurley came out of the gate alittle faster than Marshal did and thats why they kept him as their #1 RB but i think Marshall can make bigger plays than Gurley with bigger runs and he has more speed.
But what a blessing to have both at Georgia.
Marshall should get more carries but i didnt know he was injured.
Hang in there Keith and get well so you can play well because you have alot to look forward to in the near future.
Go out with a positive note to finish the season and beat Nebraska to let all these doubters see how good we are.

Moist Dawg, I pull for most other SEC teams, particularly ones that we played that season. When they win, it makes our BCS ranking improve, ie Vandy making a bowl game after we shellacked them – so I’m pullin for them in their game, UF going unbeaten other than their loss to us.

I always pull for LSU, because of the way they beat up on OOC teams, and Tech, no matter who they play, and I’m gonna pull for Bama to rout ND – I think we would have too.

SC is hard to pull for because of SOS, but I do anyway. Probably the only SEC team I haven’t pulled for lately is Auburn in 2010, for obvious reason.

I know this will “make you sick,” so get out the Pepto . . .

I hope our backs are healthy and strong as we go into this bowl game. I am looking forward to watching them run against a defense which clearly can be vulnerable. It will be even more fun if both the freshman get off some long runs, which I think quite possible. We are really fortunate to have both these guys; I hope Coach Bobo figures out how to use them to best advantage.

I’m not sure why, at this juncture, there’s such criticism of our coaches. Hey, I can be as hard on them as anybody, and I have been, but they were four yards short of playing ND for all the marbles. I find it hard to be critical of a year when we came that close to the national championship game.

I am a bit concerned about our defense going into the bowl. Alabama really ran on us (duh). Not to say that Nebraska is Alabama, but I hope we’ve plugged some holes. To win we need our offense on the field.

I will root for all the SEC teams in the bowls. If you don’t like it, that’s your problem, and I think you’re wrong if you don’t cheer every SEC victory. Every SEC victory improves the status of our conference and shows the world how difficult it is to have a winning record in the SEC. Besides that, as much as I hate Florida (and South Carolina, etc.), I hate a long list of other teams even more. Our close rival schools are friends as well as hated rivals. I will absolutely be rooting for LSU against Clemson, and would expect most Bulldog fans to be doing the same. Geaux Tigers!

I’ll also root for Georgia Tech in their bowl.

I’m very glad to hear that Keith Marshall is feeling on top of the world. He is a great Dawg. I look forward to watching some beautiful runs by him and his roommate on Tuesday.

I hope our other backs get a chance to run, too. If we can score 80 points that would be fine with me.

I’d love to see as many SEC teams as possible in the final BCS top ten. I hope Alabama smears ND, beating them by 50 points. I’d love to see Alabama, and Georgia, and Florida, and Texas A&M, and LSU, and South Carolina in the top ten. I think it possible that the SEC is so good relative to the other conferences that maybe that’s how it should be. We’ll find out in the next week or so.

The big boy games begin soon. I can’t wait.

Go, Keith Marshall! Go, Georgia Bulldogs! Go, SEC!

Every time an SEC team wins against a non SEC member, the Dawgs win. We reinforce how dominant our conference is and eliminates the ole, “they didn’t play anybody” argument. A strong conference makes strong teams. Don’t see how any true Dawg fan can pull for a Big 10, ACC, or PAC 10 team over one of our SEC neighbors.

I generally pull for the SEC team in any game outside the conference. Truthfully alot of times I wish they could both lose ala ND vs Bama. I sure don’t want Clemson going into the off season thinking they are “SEC killers” by beating LSU. I want all the questions about the ACC and how they can’t beat the SEC to remain valid going into next year. I want Clemson shaking in their boots…so yeah I’m going to hope LSU wins that one in particular. Does that make me less of a Dawg fan? No, I don’t think so.

Go Dawgs and Go SEC that’s what Bowl season is all about. Marshall is a very good back and Malcome is too. Gurley is a great back and that’s why he plays more. He can run inside, outside, catch passes, block, etc. Barring injury he will go down as the 2nd best back to play at UGA.

UGa fans pulling for LSU is like Ford cheering for Chevy against Toyota. It is OK but not working that hard to cheer for another team. I was impressed with Duke against Cincy. Duke didn’t give up like I feared but I want not really cheering for Duke. I cheer for teams I like or coaches I respect or players I enjoy watching doing well. I don’t cheer of other teams in my league cause SOMEHOW it make my team better by association. It that were the case VANDY is not a good educational institution just because it is in the Slightly Educated Conference.

You people can rationalize and give every lame excuse you want but you are no better than Jane Fonda or Benedict Arnold. You are traitors.
How do you look at yourselves in the mirror after cheering for tech, or floriduh, or bama? The same schools that bad mouth UGA all season long.
The rest of the conference winning doesnt make UGA look good, WINNING DOES.

The dawgs will be fine on offense and put some points on the board. Overall, they played well against AL, which has one of the best D’s in the country. On the other hand, the D is still asking itself how it allowed AL to run 350 yds on them and will Neb be allowed to do the same thing? Will they be ready to play or even want to be there knowing injury could cost them a shot in the NFL? The outcome of this bowl game will rest largely on their shoulders. Don’t take Neb lightly. They could probably beat half the teams in the SEC and their D, like GA’s has something to prove after both got embarrassed in their last outing. Whoever has the most heart will come out on top. Also saying you like FSU to win is pulling for them or cheering them on whether you jump up and scream or cry or pull your whatever. It’s the same thing. Also since UGA sells out every game with screaming Red clad patrons like me there must be a lot of these bloggers that go to games. Techies need more of their bloggers to go to their games.
