Georgia’s John Jenkins out for bowl game due to academics

Georgia will be without one of its most formidable defensive weapons when it plays Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1.

John Jenkins, a senior who started all 13 games at noseguard for the Bulldogs, was unable to meet academic requirements to maintain his eligibility for the bowl game. Georgia coach Mark Richt shared that news with reporters after the team convened at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel Wednesday evening.

“John Jenkins will not be coming to the bowl due to an academic-related issue,” Richt told reporters. “I think John Jenkins has been awesome for Georgia. I’ve been really proud of what he’s accomplished for us and just really want to wish him the very best  because he’s been a blessing to our program.”

Jenkins has sat out bowl practices and been listed with a concussion since the Bulldogs returned to action following final exams on Dec. 12. Richt was asked this past Thursday if the Bulldogs suffered any academic casualties after fall semester but declined “until we get to the bowl sight.”

The 6-foot-3, 358-pound Jenkins was named second-team All-SEC this season by both the coaches and media. A junior college transfer, Jenkins played both noseguard and end for the Bulldogs, amassing 50 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Georgia will start junior Kwame Geathers for the bowl game. Jenkins’ loss is somewhat cushioned by the expected return of Abry Jones for the bowl game. Jones, a senior starter, missed the last seven games of the season after having to undergo ankle surgery.

Big John was a blessing to the football program…..but I guess he did not bless the classroom or the library too much with his enormous presence between games….unfortunately.

Muschamp dismissed soph. backup safety and nickel back Pop Saunders today for repeated violations of team rules (his room was filled with too much funny smelling smoke). Says he wants to go play for Louisville next. So I am wondering if he calls Charlie Strong before or after the Sugar Bowl??? And if Charlie has more relaxed rules concerning smoking the weed on campus.

UGA needs to try the Dieon Sanders ploy. Sanders, who was not even enrolled as a student at the university, played for 4th ranked FSU in the 1989 Sugar Bowl against Auburn. His 4th quarter interception in the end zone preserved FSU’s 13 – 7 win. There obviously cannot be academic issues for someone who is not a student.

John Jenkins is a DGD and we will miss him. I hope he fully recovers and has a great NFL career. It has to be rough finishing a semester with a concusion. Jenkins always played hard and he stayed out of trouble. Nay sayers can take a flying leap (off a short pier).

That is JOKE statement right? He hasn’t done Awesome for Georgia. He did awesome for himself and he did good for the football team, but GEORGIA is a State or a UNIVERSITY and Jenkins proved to be a loser. He is all about himself and didn’t even care enough to finish his degree with just a few weeks left. He let himself down. He let his team down. I would guess he told some mother figure in his life that he would get his degree so he let her down too. He doesn’t care about UGa or the fans or he would have been a man and lived up to his obligations as a Scholarship Student Athlete. I hope he doesn’t become another pro athlete discretionary tale like Quincy Carter.

We also lost our best D-lineman (Steinkuhler) to injury in the Iowa game too. I’m afraid there’s still too much talent on the G-side of the ball for the Huskers to handle. Nebraska’s on the way back up but not quite up to the level of the SEC’s best yet. GBR!

As a classmate of John Jenkins, I just have to point out to those claiming his “Family and Child Development” major and taking easy classes, our major is Human Development and Family Sciences, which is a combination of Biology, Sociology, Psychology, and many other aspects of Human Development as well as economics and nutrition science aspects. Anyone who thinks there is an easy major at UGA is oblivious and these guys work their butts off to keep up with schoolwork and team commitments, and they still make time to have a presence in the classroom and college as a whole. The football players in my classes are some of the nicest guys I have ever met, work hard, are humble, and many have chosen their major so that they can work with kids and/or non-profits one day, so next time you want to talk about how stupid they are, realize that they have to deal with more than just football. They have lives that are probably more difficult and complicated than many of ours and still make time for school, football, and even their community and then have to deal with idiots like you claiming they are stupid.

Nebraska might get hammered like Tech did. It will be because UGA uses no resemblance of what a true STUDENT/athlete is. They only recruit for football only and then put their athletes in studies that no parent would put their kids in. Only made up degrees to get players qualified and with a tutor…. maybe able to pass. No parent would spend $ 60 k to put their kids in a menial degree. They are made up just for their athletes to win and to make money for the University. This is a real good message we’re sending to our kids. Don’t worry about school because it doesn’t matter….. just do good on the playing field because they will find a degree for you.

We can play 8 man fronts against the Huskers and dare them to throw deep, bring back the wide tackle 6 Dooley employed. Get our LBs in the gaps and pinch the middle with our other lineman. Bring Rambo up and man up their WRs. As for offense, play both Gurley and Marshall in the backfield and split Marshall on a wing, with 2 TEs and 2 WRs. They double our WRs, hit the middle with our TEs, who are under rated. They try to blitz Murray, let it fly. Being first in pass defense in the Big so-called 10 is like being first place in a beauty pageant in eastern KY.

lets see child development…hmmmmm sorta like majoring in general studies, you say child development majors must take other classes…bio, sociolgy, economics…etc it’s not the class it’s at what level are the classes you described are child development majors required to take???? chances are the econ course required is on the entry or 100 level. since he went to UGA to play football (instead of academics) you would think he would be smart enuff to major in something usefull like accounting, economics, or finance so if he does make it in the NFL he will not end up broke 3-4 years after he is done playing,,,,no wait to major in something meaning full like business, acct’g, finance, or econ that would mean ole john would havve been required to take upper level or advance courses such as mangerial economics/corp finance/advaced acct’g or auditing. that would have meant “ole john” would have had to study instead of being able to “hang out” or “sleep in”..lets just hope “ole john” does make it to the nfl, if not we will see “ole john” standing around telling anyone/everyone who will listen about “how i did-did almosted mades pro, cause you ben doin, ubba-dubba, eyes be going back to scool to be gettin my degree in da summa time when it be-did warm, so-did eyes can becomes a teacher and be teechin liddle kids hows to talk and count good”

Yes, UGa has dirty laundry as does EVERY college. This time last year everyone thought Penn State was the cleanest program in the nation and they had the highest grad rate to boot. Even the high and mighty GT has had 2 coaches arrested recently, a former player accused of murder, multiple probations, etc, etc, etc. I assure you that whatever college you pull for has a similar list. Vandy and Duke were the only universities in the South to not have this type of program. Even the high and mighty Jackets gave preferential treatment and extra tutoring to athletes.

Seeing a lot of people on here commenting on how John is a dumbass… Not completely sure how you can make that statement as chances are he makes more money than 98% of the people on this page. Who is the idiot now? Kid came into UGA with a learning disability and will most likely be a top 20 pick.

In addition, clearly people have no idea how the nose tackle position works. Vince Wilfork is arguably the best NT in the NFL and has 48 total tackles for the season. John has just over that with 50, one less sack and has played three less games. He is nearly triple teamed every play. There is a reason why he is so highly rated and why the University of Georgia had him as a starting NT. John is probably the best Defensive Lineman Georgia has had since Richard Seymour.

90% of the rushing yards against Alabama were in the second half when John was moved from Nose Tackle to Defensive end. Not sure who the genius was that made that adjustment, but very effective I must say.

First lets weed out the people who actually have some knowledge of football then we can talk about this more in depth.

@CrossDawg, Yes Jan Kemp (deceased) was a UGa teacher…….and she blew the whistle on remedial studies programs for athletes at UGa and just about all other colleges. These programs provided inappropriate (preferential) academic treatment…….especially for football players. It was a big deal decades ago and probably a very important exposure of college athletics. It changed college sports in a big way and forced HS players to meet certain academic standards for admissions.

For JB the pathetic loser who tries to tear down Alabama because he can’t defend Georgia:

“Just before 1:30 p.m. on another summer day the Alabama coaching staff files into the conference room for the weekly academic review. Nine assistant coaches and the athletic department’s academic director sit around a long rectangular table while trainers and graduate assistants grab chairs on the edge of the room. One wall is covered by a large whiteboard showing high school players that the staff is recruiting, ranked and organized by position. The coaches joke and laugh with one another. Then the private door from Saban’s office opens — and the room immediately goes silent. Saban, reading glasses perched on his nose and his ever-present spiral-bound notepad in his hand, sits down at the head of the table. “What do we got?” he asks quietly, getting right to the point.

The academic adviser launches into an update of each player in the program who has any kind of academic red flag while Saban studies the information on a coded list, occasionally injecting questions. One player is struggling in math class but working hard. Another, his history professor reports, isn’t taking notes and didn’t bother to answer all the exam questions. “I want to talk to him,” Saban says a couple of times and makes a note. For the past three years Alabama has been second in the Southeastern Conference in the graduation rate of its football players — behind Vanderbilt — and last year set a conference record with 38 Academic All-SEC honorees, even while it was winning the national championship.”

Some are reviewing the rushing totals in the last 4 to 5 games with Jenkins and the rest of those acclaimed athletes playing. They wonder what Nebraska might do with Jenkins gone. The problem is not about the athletes, it’s the conflicting schemes run by the offense and defense. When the Dogs offense clicks they score with few plays and little time off the clock. This leaves the defense exposed to many more plays from their opponents. They habitually get worn down and gashed. Don’t believe me? Check the time of possession even in the games we win. To win a NC, you have to play as a team. The offense must compliment and support the defense. Our offense works against the defense.

Having an undeserving UGA team playing vs ND might have been worth it just to see the implosion of the local UGA fans if the the “great” kid was ineligible for the MNC game. But most likely, Saint Richt would have a “re-test” of results scheduled with the results to come back the Monday after the MNC game, then Jenkins would be suspended for a game to be determined later.

“just like a defense that gives up 300+ yards rushing in 3 consecutive games is regarded as great.” – DP.

Are you that stupid, or just seem like it?

We also held all three of those opponents to 19 completed passes – COMBINED. No wonder they decided to run the ball. UGA blew out Southern and Tech, then battled Bama to 4 lead-changes in the 4th quarter alone.

Oh and go look up how many yards rushing Ga Southern got on Bama’s #1 defense in 2011, and get back with me.

DP

December 27th, 2012
1:23 pm

Joey Boy, that “19 completed passes” is funny. Alabama made plenty of yardage on its completed passes, enough to have over 500 yards of total offense with the 350 rushing.

Alabama’s 2011 defense gave up over 300 yards rushing to Georgia Southern, but Saban and Smart held out all 3 nose tackles with minor injuries so they’d be at full strength for Auburn the following week. And that defense led the nation in every major statistical category, pitched a shutout against LSU and held them to less than 100 yards of total offense in the BCS championship game. This was in the game following LSU running it down Georgia’s throat and hanging 42 points on them.

Typical Dumb Delusional Dawg. Does the fact that bulldogs are among the dumbest dog breeds rub off on the Georgia fan base?

DP do you not even listen to your own coach? Saban said after the game that the reason they went to the running game was that their line couldn’t block our rushers off the edge, to his credit Saban saw the weakness in his team and turned it into a plus.

WDE, my daddy always said, “don’t waste your time arguing with an idiot.”

Anybody who brings up dog breeds on a football blog, and makes a big deal of Southern and Tech getting over 300 yards rushing, WHEN ALL THEY DO IS RUN THE BALL, well, let’s just say he is wasting our time.

WDE, Alabama’s offensive line didn’t have any trouble giving McCarron plenty of time to throw on that touchdown throw to Cooper that won the game did they? They spent the better part of 3 quarters running it down the throat of Jarvis Jones and made his a$$ quit.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I though Tech had the nation’s top rushing offense when we throttled them in November. Bobo will have us in the end zone more often than the Huskers. If defense can get a couple of stops and slow their offense down, we’ll outscore them. Just like the Tech game, get a couple of touchdowns ahead and force them to throw the ball and the rout will be on.

DP funny in the 4th quarter with the game on the line and all Bama needed was one more first down to seal the deal, Jarvis was still playing and help make the Tide punt all they needed was 10 yards and the drive down the field never happens…no no little fella Bama line did a good job the RB’s did a good job but no one got the UGA D or Jarvis to quit.

“”I’m going to tell you, I think it’s a crying shame Georgia doesn’t get to go to a BCS bowl game,” Saban added. “They should get to go to a BCS bowl game. They played a tremendous game out there today. That was a great football game by both teams, and they could have won at the end just as soon as us. It came right down to the last play.”

Seems your coach had a lot different interpretation of that game than your silly ass does, DP.

You jackasses told UGA fans for a month we didn’t have a chance in the SECCG, then you all about poop your little-boy pants, until the last play of the game is over, then, hell, a month later, just proceed with history-revisionism:

Bama stomped us – beat the mortal hell out of the Dawgs! Wasn’t even close! We just dreamed that the game ended on the 5 yd line, after we drove 80 yards, with no timeouts.

You and your ilk can kiss our Bulldog asses – you are of the bragging, idiot, breed – you know, like the kind that poisons 300 year old trees – just for spite. Beat your wife and kids if the Irish somehow wins. Sound like you? Of course it does.

Go stick your lips back on your coach’s butt-cheeks.

Joey it sound like your Dad was a smart man. It seems to me that the loudest of the Bama fan base is the scariest. I think they are concerned and hear “foot steps” after all Joey. LSU should have beat them on the scoreboard as badly as they did on the field, they ran all over the Tide D until even the play by play guys were talking about how “gassed” they were. Then a first year SEC team lead by a freshman QB DOES beat them, and then to make the Bamaities even more nervous is that the worst team in the country to hear them tell it, and Joey I mean the WORST team in the NATION not just the SEC , worst players, worst coaches just worst program from top to bottom takes them to the last play of the game , Joey did you notice Saban didn’t take a breath the entire 4th quarter? So they are having trouble sleeping and it makes them cranky on the blogs so we should forgive them cause all they can think about right now is how can they go on if Notre Dame beats them?? And after they run the season thru their minds for the 10,000th time they realize that could happen……easily.

Yeah, Georgia gave up 350 yards rushing but with under 2 minutes left in the game and with it clear to even John Jenkins that Alabama was going to run the ball 3 times to make Georgia use up their timeouts, Georgia was able to stack 9 in the box and stop them from making a first down. Congratulations.

Not much hyperbole there WDE. Could you reference a post by anybody calling Georgia the worst team in the country?

See if you can find a post from me saying Georgia didn’t have a chance against Alabama.

All Tech fans can do is hope that some kind of calamity befalls our players, be it injuries, suspensions, arrests, etc. Sadly, its all they have. Look at how they jump all over stuff like this like flies on you know what. Meanwhile, the average UGA fan would have hard time naming more than 2 or 3 players on Tech’s roster. We don’t wish them any harm. To the contrary, I think Georgia Tech football players all deserve a freaking medal just for playing for the worst group of crybaby worthless fans in college football. Big John had a concussion plain and simple following the bama game that carried into exam week. He asked for an extension and was denied by the academic powers that be. Can you recall any other academic issues he had in his years here at Georgia? Nope.

I love the fact that UGA runs a quality program, otherwise he would be suiting up on Jan. 1st. John didn’t even make the trip, so it’s time to move on…G.A.T.A

UGA has 9 guys that are nfl canidates and its really not in their best interest to play as hard to risk injury in a game that will only make money for the UNIVERSITY! watch the other 8 guys that have a chance in the game watch how laid back they are, its pointless when you dont have a chance at winning a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP why not think about you. UGA is not thinking about them are they gonna give them some of those millions of dollars for winning the Capital 1 bowl NO! Richt knows his players are not there for UGA academics cause if they were they wouldn’t have been admitted BE HONEST UGA has a low rate of Black males just there for academics most of those guys go to Albany State Fort Valley Morehouse Clark Atlanta etc. HBCU’s Yall kill me!!!!!! Thanks “Educate” for your very astute comment on the academics that athletes must juggle with so many other obligations. If others of you would notice, most comments are rife with rude, ignorant, and grammatically incorrect garbage. I wager that not one of you is now, nor has ever been, an athlete at a major university.

I enjoy sportsmanship and competitive spirit as much as the next guy but find no joy in the downfall of individual players.

Here’s to a good, safe game for everyone.
