Georgia will be without one of its most formidable defensive weapons when it plays Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1.
John Jenkins, a senior who started all 13 games at noseguard for the Bulldogs, was unable to meet academic requirements to maintain his eligibility for the bowl game. Georgia coach Mark Richt shared that news with reporters after the team convened at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel Wednesday evening.
“John Jenkins will not be coming to the bowl due to an academic-related issue,” Richt told reporters. “I think John Jenkins has been awesome for Georgia. I’ve been really proud of what he’s accomplished for us and just really want to wish him the very best because he’s been a blessing to our program.”
Jenkins has sat out bowl practices and been listed with a concussion since the Bulldogs returned to action following final exams on Dec. 12. Richt was asked this past Thursday if the Bulldogs suffered any academic casualties after fall semester but declined “until we get to the bowl sight.”
The 6-foot-3, 358-pound Jenkins was named second-team All-SEC this season by both the coaches and media. A junior college transfer, Jenkins played both noseguard and end for the Bulldogs, amassing 50 tackles and two tackles for loss.
Georgia will start junior Kwame Geathers for the bowl game. Jenkins’ loss is somewhat cushioned by the expected return of Abry Jones for the bowl game. Jones, a senior starter, missed the last seven games of the season after having to undergo ankle surgery.

Folks,
Big John had a concussion plain and simple following the bama game that carried into exam week. He asked for an extension and was denied by the academic powers that be. Can you recall any other academic issues he had in his years here at Georgia? Nope.
I love the fact that UGA runs a quality program, otherwise he would be suiting up on Jan. 1st. John didn’t even make the trip, so it’s time to move on…G.A.T.A

You are right, Motel#6.
Congrats for 2 great seasons at UGA, Big John.
Now go get you a big ol fat signing bonus, and put some up for a rainy day. When you get time, come back to Athens and get that last semester done, just in case you need it one day.

Really? How can you be MAD @ this kid yeah he should get his degree but he can always get that from anywhere! this was a draft issue, why risk injury and why go out for a team that is playing for NOTHING more reason for a PLAYOFF to stop this nonsense. UGA has 9 guys that are nfl canidates and its really not in their best interest to play as hard to risk injury in a game that will only make money for the UNIVERSITY! watch the other 8 guys that have a chance in the game watch how laid back they are, its pointless when you dont have a chance at winning a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP why not think about you. UGA is not thinking about them are they gonna give them some of those millions of dollars for winning the Capital 1 bowl NO! Richt knows his players are not there for UGA academics cause if they were they wouldn’t have been admitted BE HONEST UGA has a low rate of Black males just there for academics most of those guys go to Albany State Fort Valley Morehouse Clark Atlanta etc. HBCU’s Yall kill me!!!!!! UGA degree Really? LMAO THAT boy came there for 1 reason and 1 reason only to play football! For the record he is a legit 1st rounder 6′6 330 and athletic are you serious in a 3-4 defense he is the KEY! BYE BYE GA

Looks like Spurrier will have to amend his astute observation on UGA to include bowl games…
“I sort of liked playing them that second game AND BOWL GAMES because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended”
Oh well, UGA will be UGA.

Why are all these lame GT fans still talking about the 2008 game, like it was such a big deal, damn, who cares about the past!! We’ve beaten y’all punks 11 out of the past 12 years, badly! 42-10 is the recent score we dominated y’all this year like insects on the ground! When are y’all GT fans going to finally learn how to focus on your own team instead of hating on Georgia all the time! Focus on your own team against USC!

Thanks “Educate” for your very astute comment on the academics that athletes must juggle with so many other obligations. If others of you would notice, most comments are rife with rude, ignorant, and grammatically incorrect garbage. I wager that not one of you is now, nor has ever been, an athlete at a major university.
I enjoy sportsmanship and competitive spirit as much as the next guy but find no joy in the downfall of individual players.
Here’s to a good, safe game for everyone.
