Georgia’s John Jenkins out for bowl game due to academics

Georgia will be without one of its most formidable defensive weapons when it plays Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1.

John Jenkins, a senior who started all 13 games at noseguard for the Bulldogs, was unable to meet academic requirements to maintain his eligibility for the bowl game. Georgia coach Mark Richt shared that news with reporters after the team convened at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel Wednesday evening.

“John Jenkins will not be coming to the bowl due to an academic-related issue,” Richt told reporters. “I think John Jenkins has been awesome for Georgia. I’ve been really proud of what he’s accomplished for us and just really want to wish him the very best  because he’s been a blessing to our program.”

Jenkins has sat out bowl practices and been listed with a concussion since the Bulldogs returned to action following final exams on Dec. 12. Richt was asked this past Thursday if the Bulldogs suffered any academic casualties after fall semester but declined “until we get to the bowl sight.”

The 6-foot-3, 358-pound Jenkins was named second-team All-SEC this season by both the coaches and media. A junior college transfer, Jenkins played both noseguard and end for the Bulldogs, amassing 50 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Georgia will start junior Kwame Geathers for the bowl game. Jenkins’ loss is somewhat cushioned by the expected return of Abry Jones for the bowl game. Jones, a senior starter, missed the last seven games of the season after having to undergo ankle surgery.

the Difference in a TECH fan compared to an SEC team fan…posted on a tech blog about Players on Dean’s List and players graduating.
=================================================================

I want to win a national championship but that is a dream. I do want to see Tech win every game but I know that will not always happen either. I do Love that Tech is educating & graduating quality young men and putting a pretty good product on the court or field that I pay to see.
STUDENT athlete…………COLLEGE football…….those terms imply that SCHOOL & EDUCATION come before games & fans.
Thanks Coaches and Staff for getting good kids and graduating them.
Congratulations to the Players for Caring enough to give your very best in the Classroom and on the Field.
To the TECH fans that seem to think the only thing that matters is winning and want Johnson gone. I say to you go be a fan of any win at all cost SEC team of your choosing. Tech fans should want to win but not over having QUALITY Graduates worthy of a Tech Degree playing on the team.

I’m not worried. Maybe this will get a couple of the younger guys some game reps and a head start on spring practice. Big John had some pretty stout performances but not enough. Hopefully Geathers will get fired up about busting up some plays in the bowl game.

For JB the pathetic loser who tries to tear down Alabama because he can’t defend Georgia:

“Just before 1:30 p.m. on another summer day the Alabama coaching staff files into the conference room for the weekly academic review. Nine assistant coaches and the athletic department’s academic director sit around a long rectangular table while trainers and graduate assistants grab chairs on the edge of the room. One wall is covered by a large whiteboard showing high school players that the staff is recruiting, ranked and organized by position. The coaches joke and laugh with one another. Then the private door from Saban’s office opens — and the room immediately goes silent. Saban, reading glasses perched on his nose and his ever-present spiral-bound notepad in his hand, sits down at the head of the table. “What do we got?” he asks quietly, getting right to the point.

The academic adviser launches into an update of each player in the program who has any kind of academic red flag while Saban studies the information on a coded list, occasionally injecting questions. One player is struggling in math class but working hard. Another, his history professor reports, isn’t taking notes and didn’t bother to answer all the exam questions. “I want to talk to him,” Saban says a couple of times and makes a note. For the past three years Alabama has been second in the Southeastern Conference in the graduation rate of its football players — behind Vanderbilt — and last year set a conference record with 38 Academic All-SEC honorees, even while it was winning the national championship.”

Some are reviewing the rushing totals in the last 4 to 5 games with Jenkins and the rest of those acclaimed athletes playing. They wonder what Nebraska might do with Jenkins gone. The problem is not about the athletes, it’s the conflicting schemes run by the offense and defense. When the Dogs offense clicks they score with few plays and little time off the clock. This leaves the defense exposed to many more plays from their opponents. They habitually get worn down and gashed. Don’t believe me? Check the time of possession even in the games we win. To win a NC, you have to play as a team. The offense must compliment and support the defense. Our offense works against the defense.

“he`s a great kid ”

Little hard to follow as the “great” kid stopped going to classes and bailed on is team before the end of the season?

Having an undeserving UGA team playing vs ND might have been worth it just to see the implosion of the local UGA fans if the the “great” kid was ineligible for the MNC game. But most likely, Saint Richt would have a “re-test” of results scheduled with the results to come back the Monday after the MNC game, then Jenkins would be suspended for a game to be determined later.

Could be that he “failed” a class so he wouldn’t have to play and potentially get hurt in the bowl game and therefore hurt his draft status, as it’s pretty much a guarantee he’ll be drafted pretty high based on everything he’s already done. Think about it…millions waiting for you if you stay healthy or a bowl game against Nebraska? Has happened before, no doubt.

“just like a defense that gives up 300+ yards rushing in 3 consecutive games is regarded as great.” – DP.

Are you that stupid, or just seem like it?

We also held all three of those opponents to 19 completed passes – COMBINED. No wonder they decided to run the ball. UGA blew out Southern and Tech, then battled Bama to 4 lead-changes in the 4th quarter alone.

Oh and go look up how many yards rushing Ga Southern got on Bama’s #1 defense in 2011, and get back with me.

DP

December 27th, 2012

Joey Boy, that “19 completed passes” is funny. Alabama made plenty of yardage on its completed passes, enough to have over 500 yards of total offense with the 350 rushing.

Alabama’s 2011 defense gave up over 300 yards rushing to Georgia Southern, but Saban and Smart held out all 3 nose tackles with minor injuries so they’d be at full strength for Auburn the following week. And that defense led the nation in every major statistical category, pitched a shutout against LSU and held them to less than 100 yards of total offense in the BCS championship game. This was in the game following LSU running it down Georgia’s throat and hanging 42 points on them.

Typical Dumb Delusional Dawg. Does the fact that bulldogs are among the dumbest dog breeds rub off on the Georgia fan base?

Maybe I’m wrong, but I though Tech had the nation’s top rushing offense when we throttled them in November. Bobo will have us in the end zone more often than the Huskers. If defense can get a couple of stops and slow their offense down, we’ll outscore them. Just like the Tech game, get a couple of touchdowns ahead and force them to throw the ball and the rout will be on.

You jackasses told UGA fans for a month we didn’t have a chance in the SECCG, then you all about poop your little-boy pants, until the last play of the game is over, then, hell, a month later, just proceed with history-revisionism:

Bama stomped us – beat the mortal hell out of the Dawgs! Wasn’t even close! We just dreamed that the game ended on the 5 yd line, after we drove 80 yards, with no timeouts.

You and your ilk can kiss our Bulldog asses – you are of the bragging, idiot, breed – you know, like the kind that poisons 300 year old trees – just for spite. Beat your wife and kids if the Irish somehow wins. Sound like you? Of course it does.

Joey it sound like your Dad was a smart man. It seems to me that the loudest of the Bama fan base is the scariest. I think they are concerned and hear “foot steps” after all Joey. LSU should have beat them on the scoreboard as badly as they did on the field, they ran all over the Tide D until even the play by play guys were talking about how “gassed” they were. Then a first year SEC team lead by a freshman QB DOES beat them, and then to make the Bamaities even more nervous is that the worst team in the country to hear them tell it, and Joey I mean the WORST team in the NATION not just the SEC , worst players, worst coaches just worst program from top to bottom takes them to the last play of the game , Joey did you notice Saban didn’t take a breath the entire 4th quarter? So they are having trouble sleeping and it makes them cranky on the blogs so we should forgive them cause all they can think about right now is how can they go on if Notre Dame beats them?? And after they run the season thru their minds for the 10,000th time they realize that could happen……easily.

Yeah, Georgia gave up 350 yards rushing but with under 2 minutes left in the game and with it clear to even John Jenkins that Alabama was going to run the ball 3 times to make Georgia use up their timeouts, Georgia was able to stack 9 in the box and stop them from making a first down. Congratulations.
