Georgia’s John Jenkins out for bowl game due to academics

Georgia will be without one of its most formidable defensive weapons when it plays Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1.

John Jenkins, a senior who started all 13 games at noseguard for the Bulldogs, was unable to meet academic requirements to maintain his eligibility for the bowl game. Georgia coach Mark Richt shared that news with reporters after the team convened at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel Wednesday evening.

“John Jenkins will not be coming to the bowl due to an academic-related issue,” Richt told reporters. “I think John Jenkins has been awesome for Georgia. I’ve been really proud of what he’s accomplished for us and just really want to wish him the very best  because he’s been a blessing to our program.”

Jenkins has sat out bowl practices and been listed with a concussion since the Bulldogs returned to action following final exams on Dec. 12. Richt was asked this past Thursday if the Bulldogs suffered any academic casualties after fall semester but declined “until we get to the bowl sight.”

The 6-foot-3, 358-pound Jenkins was named second-team All-SEC this season by both the coaches and media. A junior college transfer, Jenkins played both noseguard and end for the Bulldogs, amassing 50 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Georgia will start junior Kwame Geathers for the bowl game. Jenkins’ loss is somewhat cushioned by the expected return of Abry Jones for the bowl game. Jones, a senior starter, missed the last seven games of the season after having to undergo ankle surgery.

“… but they have nothing to be ashamed of.”

What about the 53 arrests in the past four years?

What about the Fulmer Cup?

What about Isaiah Crowell?

What about Caleb King and Washaun Ealey?

What about AJ Green making one of the lowest Wunderlic scores ever recorded?

What about the Jan Kemp trial?

What about Jim Harrick?

What about the #1 Party School title for having the most drunks on campus?

What about Damon Evans?

What about all the dawgs who are busted for illegal drug use every time they have a surprise test?

What about the joke phony majors that Richt sticks most of his dummies in?

What about a team full of morons whose IQs barely exceed the intelligence of vegetables?

And on and on it goes, with no end to the embarrassment and shame that Mark Richt brings to UGA?

Wow! Let’s kick a kid while he’s down. It’s not enough that his academic ineligibilty is broadcast by the media, which is surely embarassing, or that he has to explain to his teammates why he won’t be traveling with the team, he also has to face to ridicule of judgemental morons on the AJC blog.

Any of you guys ever taken a semester of college courses while playing division I football?

Marzha – if you are that embarassed of UGA, then why are you a fan? Did you even go to UGA? Or are you just one of those morons who like to complain about everything?

You drudged up Jan Kemp? That was decades ago. The University paid the price for that indiscretion and they came out better for it, with higher academic standards and entrance levels.

If you have nothing better to do than bash this University, then move on. We don’t need so-called fans like you.

Good on UGA for demandinging and maintaining academic standards. As a Gator, I am particularly impressed that UGA follows its guidelines on academic eligibility. Go Dawgs – beat Nebraska.
Go Gators – beat L’ville.

Yes, UGa has dirty laundry as does EVERY college. This time last year everyone thought Penn State was the cleanest program in the nation and they had the highest grad rate to boot. Even the high and mighty GT has had 2 coaches arrested recently, a former player accused of murder, multiple probations, etc, etc, etc. I assure you that whatever college you pull for has a similar list. Actually, now that I look at it, UGa’s list looks pretty good compared to GT, Penn State, NC, etc

He forgot to mention that in the Jan Kemp case UGa did not violate any NCAA rules and they were not punished in any way by the NCAA or SEC. Yes the University was exposed for their remedial studies programs, but if you remember Kemp exposed the entire world of college football. Vandy and Duke were the only universities in the South to not have this type of program. Even the high and mighty Jackets gave preferential treatment and extra tutoring to athletes.

Nobody said Jenkins can’t finish his degree but all he had to do was go to and pass his classes to finish the season and be with his teammates at the bowl. Yes it happens at all schools and that is sad. Jenkins let himself and his teammates down being selfish.

I don’t want to cast stones at John Jenkins because I don’t know all the details. Many years ago I went on probation (failed chemistry and calculus). I was also an athlete and no one correctly diagnosed that I had “mono” and a spleen issue for about 6-7 weeks. We were on a 10 week quarter system at that time so I was incapacitated for the entire quarter. I let my team down by not being able to compete, but there was more to the story than met the eye so I quit casting stones years ago after my experience

All Tech fans can do is hope that some kind of calamity befalls our players, be it injuries, suspensions, arrests, etc. Sadly, its all they have. Look at how they jump all over stuff like this like flies on you know what. Meanwhile, the average UGA fan would have hard time naming more than 2 or 3 players on Tech’s roster. We don’t wish them any harm. To the contrary, I think Georgia Tech football players all deserve a freaking medal just for playing for the worst group of crybaby worthless fans in college football. I am totally serious.

Thanks.

Jenkins’ excuse was it was hard to catch up on studying after suffering a concussion- whatever. The roster lists Dave Van Halangar as “Director of Player Welfare”, This position was created by Mark Richt instead of firing Van Halangar’s sorry behind after he was a miserable failure as strength & condtioning coach. How many other friends of CMR are being paid obscene amounts of money for doing nothing? I don’t know if the players or staff members are bigger knuckleheads-

Seeing a lot of people on here commenting on how John is a dumbass… Not completely sure how you can make that statement as chances are he makes more money than 98% of the people on this page. Who is the idiot now? Kid came into UGA with a learning disability and will most likely be a top 20 pick.

In addition, clearly people have no idea how the nose tackle position works. Vince Wilfork is arguably the best NT in the NFL and has 48 total tackles for the season. John has just over that with 50, one less sack and has played three less games. He is nearly triple teamed every play. There is a reason why he is so highly rated and why the University of Georgia had him as a starting NT. John is probably the best Defensive Lineman Georgia has had since Richard Seymour.

90% of the rushing yards against Alabama were in the second half when John was moved from Nose Tackle to Defensive end. Not sure who the genius was that made that adjustment, but very effective I must say.

First lets weed out the people who actually have some knowledge of football then we can talk about this more in depth.

@CrossDawg, Yes Jan Kemp (deceased) was a UGa teacher…….and she blew the whistle on remedial studies programs for athletes at UGa and just about all other colleges. These programs provided inappropriate (preferential) academic treatment…….especially for football players. It was a big deal decades ago and probably a very important exposure of college athletics. It changed college sports in a big way and forced HS players to meet certain academic standards for admissions.
