For the AJC
One month.
By the time Georgia takes the field for the Capital One bowl on Jan. 1, exactly one month will have passed since it lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship. On Friday, the Bulldogs had their last practice in Athens before they head to Orlando to continue their bowl preparations in the Sunshine State. All the while, Christian Robinson knows people are unsure how the Bulldogs will respond to their crushing, 32-28 loss to the Crimson Tide. Doubters’ questions are grounded in Georgia’s bowl results the last two seasons, falling to Central Florida in a humiliating 10-6 loss in the Liberty Bowl in 2010 and a 33-30 triple-overtime defeat to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl last year, a game the Bulldogs led 16-0 at halftime.
Despite that evidence, Robinson assured he and his teammates are motivated to end the season on the right note.
“We all realize we came up a little short and that’s really disappointing,” the senior inside linebacker said of the SEC Championship game loss. “It was kind of sad around here for a little bit, but getting back out there and practicing we realize that we have a lot to show. We can still go down as one of the best teams in Georgia history. Just because you’re not playing for the national championship doesn’t mean you can’t be a special team. We have those types of players here and that type of leadership that hopefully we’ll show up and not give the (bowl) game away like we did last year.”
Robinson acknowledged the gap the Bulldogs have to fill between their last game and the next could derail some teams. However, he was confident the leaders on this year’s edition of the Bulldogs will make sure they give their best effort in Orlando. But if Georgia shows up lethargic and still thinking about its SEC Championship loss, Robinson said it won’t be hard to tell.
Just see how many big plays the Bulldogs give up.
“That’s usually what shows up when you have a long break — hustle plays,” he said. “Plays you normally didn’t have. You might have people loafing a little bit more, but coaches have done a great job conditioning us and honing in on those things more than X’s and O’s, because those are what win (games), especially with the type of talent we have. If we show up and do what we’re supposed to do and play physically, (we’ll) make plays.”
More than any conditioning the game planning or conditioning the month-long gap will allow, the bigger question is whether the time off will help the Bulldogs cope with their loss to the Crimson Tide better than playing the next week might have. Coming up just short against Alabama will always haunt Arthur Lynch. Even so, the junior tight end admitted he’ll have to “get over it sometime.”
All he and the Bulldogs can do now is look forward to playing the Cornhuskers.
“It’s just like anything else,” he said. “If you don’t do as well as you’d like in school, you’ve got to move on and take whatever is given. Right now for us, it’s the Capital One bowl. We’re grateful for the opportunity. Did we reach our goal? No. But are we sitting there dwelling on the fact we didn’t reach our goal? No. We’re going to prep the way we do and we’ll go in there and hopefully execute and come out with a win. That’s all you can ask for. There’s no going back.”
Being an impatient person, though, Lynch would have preferred to have the bowl game played the week after the SEC Championship.
“I don’t like any bye week. I want to get into it and get into the game, because practice can get pretty tedious,” he said. “But bowl practice is a necessity. It’s kind of like spring ball. You get 15 practices, and for the young guys, it helps out a lot. I think that’s a big deal, but I’m ready to play.”
As disheartening as the loss to the Crimson Tide was, senior cornerback Sanders Commings said it was much easier to stomach than the other one the Bulldogs suffered this season, a lopsided 35-7 defeat to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Oct. 6. Georgia’s showing against South Carolina was inexcusable in Commings’ eyes.
“You never want to get blown out by anyone, so I think we’re more proud of the way we played in that Alabama game,” he said. “Even though we lost, we were right there. You never want to get beat the way we did against South Carolina.”
Robinson couldn’t have disagreed more with his fellow senior. Losing by four touchdowns and getting thoroughly beaten was something he could easily expunge from his memory bank, the type of “bad game” nearly every team is bound to have once during the course of a long season.
But having everything in front of them — an SEC title and a chance at the national championship — and not finishing the job was too painful for Robinson to be able to forget.
“Just because, if you take any play back anywhere before getting to that, it could have been positive,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons that no one blamed anybody. It’s not like people were pointing (fingers) and saying, ‘It was this guy,’ because literally we were five yards away. If you take any play that would give you that distance before on offense, defense or special teams, it would have won the game. I just think we ran out of time, and the last play, we just weren’t able to make it. If the defense would have helped out sooner, they would have had more time. It’s no one’s fault.”

Of course the players recovered. They had all the Christmas stuff and holiday parties to get mind off Dome. But we fans better not forgotten how refs helped Bammer steal game. I still don’t know how they can cheat shot Murray and not have flags. And then they don’t suspending neither. We lucky Murray recovered from that cheat shot during game to keep playing.
To fix league office helping Saban cheat, Saban got to be stopped from coming in state and others to like Awful Burn and Tenn Orange Pumkins. But one thing to fix that is get rid recruiting restrictions on team from pointy heads like Adams. Hopefully the new Pres goning be more supporting of recruits without all the pointy head rules.

Let’s be honest here the game was poorly officiated on both sides of the ball! Why don’t you UGA fans mention the eye gouging by a UGA player? Or poor clock management? Or the missed field goal? Or 351 yards rushing? All you UGA folks hang your hat on is the refs cheated.

To compare what was going on by the end of 2010 and NOW is utterly silly. Not even remotely the sme situation.
And If we limp into this bowl with no ground game, Nebraska will eventually defend the passing attack and it will be difficult to hold a lead- same as last years bowl. Is that the case NOW?
And BTW, what is up with all the classless Bama fans posting on our blogs over the Christmas holidays?

And Thomas, too bad the other guy got to the trees at Toomers Corner before you could, maybe next time. ( I still say UGA should have refused the Capital One Bowl, if Adams had any gonads, he would have told the SEC, NO Sugar, No Bowl. Bama cheats to get where they are and loser Florida sits in its butt and advances. And I used to think Scam Newton was the worst the SEC could do.

It is the little thlings that make a champion, and that is why uga will have a hard time getting to the top, your coach allows all that junk to go on, he is just like the man who taught him good ol bobby bowden, recruit those questionable kids, and let them run wild, and suspend them for the soft teams on the schedule, bowden did luck out and win one, and alas uga might luck out and get one as well.Look at all the times FSU was right there but could not close the deal, do you really think you can beat saban, he molds his guys to have the control to preform in big games, while you all try to front load a season to make sure all your year in and year out big guns get back from their time outs to be cleared to play the big games, the game against alabama has to rip your heart out, because you know that you may never get this close again,, just remember how many times FSU had the better team, and the most talent but could not close the deal, to be champions takes a lot more than getting the best players with suspect character….. enjoy your lot in life, the old saying is if you lay down with dogs, expect to get up with flees, Springsteensaid it best you have to learn to live with what you cannot rise above…….. this is from thebiggest FSU fan you will ever meet happy new year

The sooner some of you knuckledraggers realize that your current success has far more to do with Nick Saban than Alabama, the better off you’ll be.
Diciplined like 7-6 in 2007, 6-7 in 2006, 6-6 in 2004, 4-9 in 2003, 7-5 in 2001, 3-8 in 2000, 7-5 in 1998, 4-7 in 1997? But but but but Alabama doesn’t rebuild, they reload.
Diciplined like the 20+ games Bammer has vacated the last 10 years for rampant cheating, the three seasons of bowl ineligability…..cheating to the point of almost recieving the death penalty?
Alabama would sell there soul to win in football, and they have for nearly 70 years.
It’s a shame too, because there are some tremendous individuals that have been associated with Alabama. Great men that have done great things. But there are just so many idiots in that state that have nothing better to do than champion ole state U.

I expected Murray to execute better on the last drive. To have it end the way it did, with Murray, AGAIN, imploding in a big game, I don’t know, it just gets old. We’ve seen it so many times. All he had to do was spike it, and throw up a jumpball with a nice arch on it so it doesn’t get tipped to 6′6” Lynch for the win. And you would have had 2-3 chances to win a jumpball. Instead, Murray opts to not spike it, and throws a ball 5 yards short of the end zone, as time expires. If he throws the ball away, you get another chance. If Murray puts an arch on the pass, you give Mitchell a chance to make a play. We’ve seen Murray crumble SO many times in big games, still, you never get used to it, you always think he’ll snap out of it someday, but he never does. We’ll always wonder what might have happened if Hutson Mason had started that day, which given Murray’s propsensity for choking in big games, would have been a smart move.

You have to take your hat off to Alabama. They wanted the ball in Murray’s hands on the last play, they trusted him to make another bad decision, like he usually does in big games, and true to form, he did. They had done their homework, they knew Murray’s history of losing poise in big games, and they figured it was practically guaranteed Murray would crumble under pressure, especially when it mattered most.
Fans would have loved to have seen a poised UGA Qb like Mason or Lemay, who have a history of leading their team to late td’s in Spring games, in that situation. But you never had the chance. Richt went with the lowest odds at Qb in a big game with Aaron Murray, and got burned, again, for the 11th time out of 12 games against teams that finish top 25. Richt made a poor decision to start Murray this season over Mason or Lemay, and he knows that now, but will never admit it.

I understand Ohio State fans get tired of the SEC rah rah. I do too and I support an SEC school. Just like Southerners are tired of the rah rah about the Steelers, Packers, and New York Yankees. Even when they suck they are the news.
Ohio State has a fine school and a proud tradition, but lowballing SEC schools because you can’t beat them is very un-flattering. Ohio State is currently on NCAA probation for some pretty “SEC-like” behavior. Maurice Clarette? OSU is lucky the NCAA still allows the buckeyes to claim victories from 2002. Woody looked pretty classy slugging that Clemson player.
Further there is no reason for Ohio State to bag on UGA when there only meeting with Georgia resulted in a loss.
Urban should have the Buckeyes in championship contention soon. And the big ten is terrible so they should be able to roll for 10 years.

UGA ought to be in the Sugar Bowl. I am afraid that UGA will lay down vs Nebraska and it could be very ugly. Murray will revert back to his usualtwics/costly fumble per game and the NFL bound guys and seniors will phone it in.
THIS GAME is hugely important for Georgia and Richt to show the world, that we are a solid, upper level, Second Tier team. Second tier is where most college teams desire to be. First tier are teamsnthat do routinely compete for the MNC.
Notre Dame, UGA, Oregon, Texas, A&M, Florida ( lately), FSU, Ohio State, and several others, are fine second tier programs.

There is no question Mark Richt made the wrong decision in going with Aaron Murray over the last 3 seasons.
Murray has only won 1 of the 12 games against teams that finished in the top 25.
Wonder why Richt never admits this?

Why is it that Richt will not own up to having several players ineligible for Capital One Bowl? Is it because his team is near the top in nation for ineligibility and suspensions? There are MANY UGA folks in this part of the state who are absolutely fed up with this Bulls@#% year after year. There needs to be some major changes at UGA. Can’t see things getting better with this group of clowns running things. Writers at AJC need to grow a pair and insist on info regarding eligibility of UGA players for Capital One Bowl.

Aaron Murray is 1-11 vs. teams that finish in the top 25.
That means Murray has lost 91% of these type of games.
Murray is 0-2 in Bowl games.
UGA has a 9% chance of winning the Bowl game, and a 91% chance of losing, if Murray starts.

Fellow Dawgs what sticks in my crawl and I suspect a lot of other fans is that if the game had been called even by the officials it would not have come down to that final play with the Dawgs being so close to victory. I can live with a game when my team gets beat but when officials decide the outcome that really bothers me. Alabama has a great team no doubt about it, but except for terrible officiating Alabama in my opinion would not have been close. Anyways I hope Alabama sticks it to Norte Dame and Dawgs stick it to Nebraska.

And in Murray’s last 2 games against BCS “top 2″ teams he is 1-1 and neither game was on UGa’s home field. Those games were against possibly the top 2 defenses in the nation yet Murray out scored those opponents 45 – 41. Looks like he is finally putting it together and will win it all next year. In addition, he will likely break almost all NCAA and SEC records, and most of all he will destroy your team AGAIN!!!

He plays basic power, fundamental football.
CMR needs a bowl win. I don’t see why the players got to play around in practices. I don’t understand why players got to leave early for Christmas break. Every minute of every practice counts. Two, maybe three, people have posted about and blamed officiating in the SECCG, yet you say stuff like, “…Why don’t you UGA fans mention …. All you UGA folks….”
I think most Dawgs fans know that giving up way too many rushing yards is probably the main reason we lost. Most of us know we just plain ol’ got beat. Most of us know that shoulda, woulda, coulda is a fruitless exercise.
Sure, IF we had spiked the ball we MIGHT have won. Who knows? Heck, what if Conley had caught it and took it in?
One or two (the ignorant DonDog) continue to bad-mouth Murray, even tho he was a big part of why we were in the game the whole time in the first place. Maybe more blame should go toward CTG than Murray for letting Bama run roughshod over us. Like Robinson said, there’s plenty o’ blame to go around. Anyway, to characterize all of Dawg Nation over comments by two, or three, or four, or five people is putting you at the same level of ignorance and inaneness.
Robinson has been a well-spoken representative this year. And, based his comments and those of Lynch, and Commings I think the Bulldogs have their minds right. Sounds like they’ll be ready to play.

I keep reading on here that the refs cost us the Alabama game. Bama had two players over 150 yards rushing. The game seemed close only because a couple of our excellent athletes made some excellent individual plays …. not associated with coaching or scheme. Overall we got whipped on both sides of the ball. @DonDog
expected Murray to execute better on the last drive.

UGA vs. Ohio State and Kirk Herbstreit

UGA whipped Ohio State in the GOFF YEARS. UGA stomped Ohio State and whipped them like a rented mule around 1992 or 1993 in the Citrus Bowl. Ohio State only scored 7 to UGA’s 21 or 24.
UGA owns most Big 10 teams, less MSU last year. We whipped Michigan in Ann Arbor, Wisconsin and Purdue, we own. We will defeat Nebraska 32-26 in a very sloppy game.

You also have to realize that it has been a whole month and there is still motivation after last year’s loss to come out strong in the bowl game. Some of the younger guys are going to play really hard to show why they should play more next season. On top of that, Nebraska is not that good. They ran the ball well in the Big Ten, but they are now playing an SEC defense. Nebraska is not bad, but their defense gave up FIVE HUNDRED yards rushing to Wisconsin. I think Todd will enjoy plenty of success in this game, along with Murray. Nebraska has trouble throwing the ball against decent teams and their defense is weak.

I personally think “great” is a highly watered down term and based on what sort of “great seasons” that so many bowl team will be indentified with, 12 win teams certainly will qualify.

Like I said, Nebraska is a good team, but they played in a down Big Ten conference and still lost three times. They surrendered over 500 yards on the ground to the Wisconsin rushing attack. They are good at running the ball, but they just are not good at throwing the ball downfield and their defense is going to have serious problems stopping Gurley or Murray.Georgia 38 Nebraska 21

We have to let this LOSS go, I know it was painful, 5 yards away from a NC championship, the criticism we’ve been through, the fact we haven’t won a national championship since 1980. I know it hurts.. but we have to move on… For the last time, it was NOT Aaron Murray’s fault that we lost this game, we have to look at what happened throughout the 1st-4th quarters. Remember all the penalities we had throughout this game which got us out of field goal range several times. The mistakes we made on defense by not stopping the run, by the way which is the #1 reason we lost this game! The fact is, Saban out coached us again, before halftime he said, “Whoever’s gonna run this ball better is going to win this game.” What did he do during the 3rd & 4th quarters, he ran the ball on us, it’s Todd Grantham’s fault on that issue, we couldn’t stop the run, plain & simple. Too many people are focusing on those last 15 seconds “spike the ball”, besides, Aaron Murray wanted to spike the ball but Mike Bobo didn’t want to, we wouldn’t have even been in that situation hadn’t we stop the running game better! If Aaron Murray comes back next year, we could have another shot, however, it’s going to be a hell lot tougher because of Clemson, SC, & LSU being in September, we can’t afford any suspensions for the 2013 season or there’s no SEC championship next year…

Well, yeah, there is a SECCG next year, I meant that we may not get to go because of the type of schedule we have next year, plus with our starters on defense leaving for the NFL, it’s going to be a lot tougher, the way our schedule has been in 2011 & 2012 is similar to how South Carolina & Florida’s will be in 2013. They get the easier schedule & we get the tougher schedule. We’ve been struggling with South Carolina lately whether we are at home or in Columbia, the past two South Carolina teams we’ve beaten (2008 & 2009) were 7-6 South Carolina teams we’ve barely beaten, Spurrier hates Georgia as we know it so he always plays us hard! Florida will be trying to get revenge next year in Jacksonville, so don’t get fooled, Muschamp is getting top recruits and he’s tired of loosing in the Georgia-Florida series. My biggest fear about the 2013 season is that it could be like the 2008 season all over again! However, I’m always a bulldog fan no matter what, and I’m still believing in this bulldog team whether we have ups or downs across the road!

As ESPN, announcers, and almost every non-UGA observer noted, Murray should have spiked the ball at the end of the game, Murray didn’t, and Murray’s record vs. teams that finish top 25, fell to 1 win & 11 losses in Murray’s career.
Jarvis Jones gives Muschamp nightmares

Of course it was not on Murray for us losing. Most logical fans know that… He’s a very good quarterback, so what if he isn’t freaking Peyton Manning or Drew Brees-caliber. But also, with the exception of the penalties I think Richt coached a good game. The fake punt call was brilliant and the passing and running game were established. Even a lot of the Bama fans I’ve talked to were saying Georgia played great and could have beaten them. For those who say ESPN hates UGA, Kirk Herbstreit gave UGA a ton of credit for their game. Instead of blaming the players, give credit to Alabama for once again having one heck of a team. In my opinion what lost the game for us was a lack of depth on the defensive line. With Jones out, Smith moved into the starting lineup and the backups were undersizsed or inexperienced and wore down. Bama has a great offensive line. We lost and it was tough, but I’m happy I have the chance to watch another Georgia game that will hopefully be a win. 12 wins and a win over the #16 team would be a great way to end the season. And I think after watching Nebraska’s performance against the Badgers, we should be fine if the guys are motivated at all. I can imagine they will want to go out on a high note.

I don’t care about Aaron Murray’s record against top teams, he proved how he really was on the field against Alabama, and he played well, he did his part, not the defense though, if he returns next year & plays like that for the rest of his career, he could give us another shot at the SEC championship next year! With the way our schedule is next year, Aaron Murray can prove to the nation that he can beat the elite teams, like Clemson, South Carolina, LSU, and eventually, the ultimate challenge, FLORIDA! I don’t see any point for Hutson Mason taking over as a starter with the first month of 2013 being Clemson, South Carolina, and LSU, as a backup but definately not as a starter! A lot of starters struggle their first few games, remember how Aaron Murray did against SC and Mississippi State in 2010, but he eventually improved & got better by experience! Has Hutson Mason had a lot of experience on the field, NO!! So we can’t afford that next year! Let Aaron Murray finish his career in 2013!

Considering Aaron Murray’s 1-11 career record vs. teams that finish in the top 25, since UGA plays 4 top 25 ranked teams in 2013, you have a 90% chance UGA goes 8-4 if 98th ranked passer vs. ranked team Aaron Murray returns.
Losses to top 25 teams on the UGA schedule in 2013 would be Clemson, SC, Florida, and LSU. That would put UGA at 8-4.
90% chance that happens if 98th ranked QB Aaron Murray returns for a 5th season.

Aaron Murray’s 3 year journey against ranked teams has been a dramatic fall. He started out pretty good in 2010, finished in the top 25 in qb rating, and top 50 in accuracy. In 2011, Murray’s career took a turn for the worse. He neded up in the top 35 in qb rating, and fell outside of the top 60 in accuracy. In 2012, the wheels came off the wagon as Murray collapsed to below 90 in qb rating, and near 100 in accuracy. But, Murray finished #1 in qb ranking against unranked teams in 2012, against teams like Georgia Southern, Murray soared and brought his “A” game.

I don’t really think all the blame lies with Murray when we lose to ranked teams. To me it seems as much the fault of the overall scheme. So much of what we do requires timing to be about near perfect. Our blocking suffers aganist teams like South Carolina and Bama and ultimately this throws everything off. I agree Murray can play better in big games and he gets too amped up it seems but I just don’t think all the blame should go to him. He is a solid QB and a team should be able to win big games with his caliber of QB play. I am a supporter of Richt and Murry and at the same time agree we can do better. To me it’s just more than saying ‘Murray is why we lose to ranked teams’. You would need to point to O-line blocking, play calling, scheme, route running, RB pass protection, QB play etc… to get the full picture of why we are losing to ranked teams. Just pointing to Murray is wrong… and lazy.

The 02 gators were terrible relative to the 012 SC team. So that lose during the season was less understandable.
And the Ark team we beat in the SECCG that year wasn’t even in the class as this Bama tem we just played to within 5 yrds of beating.

I am not denying those stats. All I am saying is that if you understand football 101 you know that there are many reasons why he is #1 in efficiency vs some teams and #91 in others. You can guess all day long about why it is or you can look at all the factors involved. When I watch the games I see poor blocking when we play top teams and this is the catalyst for things breaking down. Sure, Murray can do better and I agree he gets too amped up. However, there are many other problems that lead to his poor play in big games. You could put Tom Brady back there and compare his stats for when his line blocks and when it doesn’t and you would see a difference in effenciency. The difference is when his team plays good opponents his line still blocks.

I have every confidence the offense will show up big time for the Bowl game! I have my doubts about the defense which should be there as well. I may well reveal that it’s a good thing Gardner is moving on to Awburn. I hope Murray stays but if he doesn’t, I think the DAWGS will be fine at qb. It should be an exciting year offensively with the receiving corps and rb’s!

It’s interesting that Murray can play so well aganst the #4 pass defense of unranked Vanderbilt, but then struggle so much against the #73 pass defense of ranked Alabama, then again, it’s all in Murray’s head. He just panics in big games.

I wondered how long it was going to take for the Dawgs to start looking for someone to blame for the loss like if they had been 10 seconds more and those cheating refs. last time I checked the teans played for 60 minutes and then the game was over. How about that cheap shot that Ogletree put on McCarron and better still how about the eye gouging Dawson did to Dee Milner and the Dawgs want to talk about cheap shots Also if you think Bama had a hard time passing against UGA they were to busy running the ball against the world greatest defense. How many yards did Eddie Lacey and T J Yeldon have wasn’t it 351 rushing yards and McCarron had 182 yards passing.

Watching the ‘96 Ga-Aub game. Donnan benched the QB, Bobo, because of so many turnovers in prior games. Richt would never do this. Whatever people think about Donnan, I think this kind of move is needed on a team at certain times. If you’ve ever played the game, and gotten benched for screwing up, you’re either going to rise up and get your sh!t together…..or ride the pine for a long time.

I will not watch the bcs game-It already took place when Ga gave the game away on the 5 yard line! I give the elephants their due-They won-Just not interested in watching them and a lower tier team play to give the tv sports gods more more money! Yes I am a dawg fan! I do not like notre dame or alabama. But that is my choice. I am a fan of my team. Call me what ever you like, but I love my team win or lose.! Go Dawgs!

I see alot of blame on Aaron Murray.
YOU DUMBA$$ES LOOKED LIKE A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAM ON DEFENSE WITH ALL THAT NFL TALENT!!!
My lord you are the dumbest fans in college football.
Todd Grantham would have been fired last year at Alabama.
You gave him a raise.
32 years…

I wasn’t aware Aaron Murray was ranked 91st in quarterback rating against ranked teams. Everyone knows his record, 1-11, against ranked teams, but once you see that 91st quarterback ranking, and you add in Murray’s six turnovers in the last two Bowl games, it tells the tale.

Tide- you of all people should not be talking about the dumbest fans in college football. You guys have held that title for decades and that will never change.
Saban has a very high opinion of Grantham so if Georgia fans are off base what does that say about Saban… Actually all is says is that Georgia and Saban and right and you are the on who has no clue.

I’m utterly confused that fans of other teams would come on a UGA blog and first of all read the article and second, comment on the blog! Some of y’all girls need to get a life…
Our Dawgs will be ready for the Cornhuskers, believe that! Way too much pride on that team to not show up and take care of business. Gurley will rush for 200 plus and Marshall will get well over a 100 on the Cornhuskers weak D! AM will throw for 300 plus and TK and Mitchell will have big games! Our D will come out on fire and shut down there only threat on O (Martinez) and by the second half we will get to see our D for next year playing. 42-10 Dawgs
