Hutson Mason bides his time as Georgia’s ‘QB-in-waiting’

ATHENS — There has been much debate at the end of 2012 about whether or not Aaron Murray will – or should – turn pro after the season concludes. But there has been no debate whatsoever about who will play quarterback for Georgia if and when Murray makes that jump.

Hutson Mason is unchallenged as the Bulldogs’ heir apparent. In fact, so set is the plan for succession, there is no need for the word “apparent.” Better to call him “QB-in-waiting.”

So confident are Georgia’s coaches and players in Mason’s abilities, they speak of him in the same reverent tones as a seasoned starter.

“When he gets the opportunity he’s going to make some plays, I have no doubt about that,” junior tight end Arthur Lynch said of the 6-foot-3, 210-pound quarterback. “I’m positive about that and I think Aaron would be the first to tell you that as well. I think there are a lot of SEC schools that could use him as a starter right now and a lot of other schools elsewhere in the southeast like the ACC. Wait ‘til you see him.”

Murray concurred.

“Hutson’s a great quarterback,” Georgia’s three-year starter said. “He’s worked his tail off. He’s been here three years; he’s learned the playbook, his footwork, his progressions. Obviously he hasn’t been able to get the snaps this year, but . . . Hutson is ready to go, and he’s a very capable quarterback.”

Nevertheless, Mason hasn’t gotten a snap all year. In fact, thanks to Murray’s ability – and durability – Mason has played very little in his first three seasons ((8 games, 356 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions). But he has so completely impressed the Bulldogs’ coaches in practices that they literally did not need to see any more of him in games this past season.

Grudgingly at first, Georgia coaches accepted Mason’s request to be redshirted so he could build a year of eligibility between himself and Murray, who’s also a junior. At this stage, it is clear that the record-setting Murray is not going to be unseated and there simply hasn’t been enough snaps left over to waste another season of eligibility for Mason.

But now Mason knows he he’ll have a senior season all to himself regardless of what Murray decides. And it sounds as though the Bulldogs could make a concerted effort to get Mason more work next season even if Murray returns.

“I think Hutson certainly deserves to play,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “I mean, he’s earned the right to play. Managing that will be another whole question. But is he ready to play and has he earned the right to play? I’d say yes. To sit here and try to say what all that’s going to look like, I wouldn’t get into that.”

As for Murray’s decision, Richt said he hasn’t had a conversation yet with him but plans to soon.

“Sometimes you’ll have that conversation before the (bowl) game; it just depends on where the guy’s at,” Richt said. “But if Aaron’s decision is to play the game then do all the thinking and soul-searching and all that kind of stuff, we’ll definitely sit down and talk. We’ll just kind of lay it out there as far as the history of the draft and why there would be an advantage to staying and why it would there be a thought to go and all that.”

Georgia’s prospects on offense could be incentive for both quarterbacks to play for the Bulldogs next season. Other than receivers Marlon Brown and Tavarres King, who are graduating, the entire starting unit will be back.

The Bulldogs have been down this road before, most notably from 2003-2005, when the careers of David Greene and D.J. Shockley overlapped. Greene remained the primary starter until he graduated and left as the winningest quarterback in NCAA history (since unseated). Shockley got regular playing time as Greene’s backup, then took over as the undisputed starter as a senior. He led the Bulldogs’ to the 2005 SEC Championship.

“I think it worked out well,” said Shockley, who recently retired from professional football and is living and working in Atlanta. “Once I made the decision to stay, I vowed not to have any regrets. I wasn’t going to backtrack to say, ‘what if.’ I was like, ‘I’ve made this decision. Now I’m going to go with it whether it works out for the best or it doesn’t.’ If I’d have left and gone somewhere, there’s no telling what would’ve happened. So I feel good about the decision.”

Shockley said he was extremely close to transferring to Florida State or Maryland after his sophomore season with the Bulldogs. But he opted to remain in Athens and shared time with Greene in a semi-regular rotation in which he’d play every third series, depending on the flow of a particular game.

It’s no wonder then that Mason, when he was just about at his wit’s end last year and was seriously considering transferring from Georgia, made a call Shockley.

“He called me trying to get some insight,” Shockley said. “Basically I didn’t tell him one way or another, you should stay or you should go. I told him, ‘you’ve got to make the best decision for you and what you feel most comfortable with.’ I told him if you leave, you can never be sure what you’re going to get. Anything can happen because you’ve got a lot of different variables. When you’re at the University of Georgia, you already know what you’ve got.’”

Mason agreed and decided to stay, but under the pretense of being redshirted. The Bulldogs agreed, but with the understanding it might have to be lifted in the event Murray was injured.

Only once did that seem a possibility. Murray got knocked out in the first half of the Auburn game and walkon Parker Welch came into to relieve him. As it turned out, Murray merely had the breath knocked out of him and returned after one play (throwing a touchdown pass to Tavarres King, no less).

Mason was also the backup plan for the SEC Championship game against Alabama and would have been for a BCS title shot, had it come. But now, as the Bulldogs prepare for a relatively meaningless bowl game against Nebraska, there is no scenario that would alter Mason’s redshirt plans. As a result, coaches scratched him from all media interview requests since he’ll have no part in the bowl game.

But others are happy to speak Mason’s behalf.

“Hutson’s kind of a gunslinger, but not in a way where he throws it carelessly,” Lynch said. “He just has a very quick release and he has a stronger arm than people gave him credit for coming out of high school. He stands in the pocket and he knows how to make plays. There’s a little bit of a swagger about him that makes him kind of special.”

Said Richt: “Guys at all positions get to a certain point where you feel like as a coach they can perform and do well. Hutson has reached that point in his career.”

Murray should just enter the draft. He has done as much as he can for Georgia. He has worked very hard, and had some success. Murray is almost done with his second degree as well. It would benefit him to enter the draft since there aren’t a lot of big name QBS this year. He could possibly be a first rounder.

I have a friend who is a grad assistant at Georgia. He told me Mason is solid, but is not the caliber of player in practice that Aaron Murray is. He said “The guy will be a good quarterback when his time comes, but he cant’ make the throws that Aaron can make and he doesn’t have quite the talent.” He also said “LeMay doesn’t know what he’s doing and unless he improves a lot, he’ll never come close to being a starter at Georgia.”

Look forward to seeing him play, though performing when the bullets are live is a different animal. Nice to know we have options should Murray decide to leave.

At least, if Murray does decide to stay and were to get hurt, I think I would feel a lot more comfortable with him coming into the game, than I would with Lemay behind center. I don’t think the offense would miss a beat, and either way, I expect the attack will be more balanced than ever next year with our great running game, so Mason wouldn’t feel pressured to have to throw the ball all of the time for UGA to have a chance to win.
Now, I wish we had a similar situation on some of the positions on the defensive side of the ball.

The main thing is, our offensive line needs to improve and I’m glad the o-line coach is making it an open competition. We still need to land a couple more recruits to play on the line though. And of course, we’ve got to replace a lot on defense. And 17-9.

33 Years and Counting-

Not a lot of big name QB’s this year? Try Matt Barkley, Landry Jones, Tyler Wilson, Colin Klein, Geno Smith, Tyler Bray, All of which will prob be drafted ahead of him because of their arms and prototypical size. Kiper thinks he needs another year and that if he declared this year he would prob be a 3rd round pick. He should stay imo.

Can his stock rise much more? Is risking getting hurt worth it over getting at least 1 NFL contract? Matt Barkley is lucky because it could have been worse. If Murray wants his name in the record books for a few year great come back. I hate when players leave early. I hate it because most times those kids didn’t get their degree for the back-up plan. Murray has his back-up plan already in place.

“Can’t make all the throws,” my ass. I saw him in HS when he was a string-bean 185 lbs, and he could gun it – a “frozen rope.”

Murray was in Athens a full year before Mason – that’s the difference. Not to mention, Murray has gotten better every season, broken all UGA records – even Stafford could not have unseated Murray.

Hutson Mason is the real deal – and you will probably see a QB with 70% or more completion rate. He will be a big deal, even if he starts for only 1 season. His height, accuracy, and quick release make him a prototype NFL QB.

Mason is a very good QB. He shattered all the high school records in our state. He would complete like 40 out of 55. Alot was short ding ding passes But that’s the kind of offense they ran. The shot gun spread Chunk it every down. He’s VERY accurate & has a real strong arm. When in high school he was like a machine Gun !! someone in the NFL will sneak him in the draft. It will be interesting to see what Murray does. Because Richt will play Mason. People don’t be surprised when Murray goes to the NFL if it dosen’t work out He comes back to UGA as an asst. coach. This s a great problem to have to deal with. I’m just afraid Murray is thinking of everything UGA has coming back on offense & the records he could break. LET THE BIG DAWG EAT

The simple unvarnished truth about Murray is that compared with the really great UGA QBs like Fran Tarkenton, Murray is an insignificant blip. In the NFL, he’ ll be hopelessly outclassed, and after a very lackluster year, he’ll be relegated to a practice squad for a year or two, then quietly dropped. Fortunately for Murray, when this happens, he’s intelligent enough to get a real job and support himself and a family, unlike the 90% of his UGA teammates who will end up on welfare or work at menial jobs that don’ t require any intelligence.

I think UGA’s offense will be fine in 2013, Murray or no Murray! He does have that extra to offer…..more game experience. The rest of the offense, receivers, rb’s and “O” line should be even better. My concern is the defense, top to bottom, especially the “D” line. I see it as an opportunity to improve as they certainly showed a lot of poor play at times. The DAWGS will need to improve their pass rush with new db’s coming in and above all…..stopping the run, akq…….Ala-bam-damuh!

So long to Gardner! Thanks for your contributions at UGA! Sorry, I just can’t wish you luck at Awburn. Just not an Awburn fan except when they play out of conference.

I remember Mark Richt’s little speech to the Dawg Nation when he was about to make Joe T. the starter in Stafford’s freshman year, as well as before the Joe Cox year in 2009. They were very similar in nature, and said something to the effect that he thought the Dawg Nation would forgive some less than stellar play while rebuilding took place. Mark Richt no longer enjoys the same sentiments from the Dawg Nation in that regard. He has no one to blame but himself because he has choked big time every time he has been given the chance to accomplish his championship goals at The University of Georgia. If Hutson Mason is the best that a highly ranked UGA team has to offer, then Richt’s future is absolutely in jeopardy. Richt’s problem now, is that will be expected to deliver a championship every year until he achieves the goal, no matter how much talent he has squandered, or how many of his loving players bolt for the NFL before his goal is reached.

I personally believe that Richt will be gone in two years no matter what, and I know he would love a championship before he goes, but he is not capable of achieving these goals because of exactly what the article says. QB in waiting? Mason does not possess the talent necessary to win said championship, but this is not Richt’s first concern. His first concern is that he promised an undeserving player the starting job based on, well actually I am at a huge loss at what is is based on, but Richt will not survive this. I know that all of the writers and bobble heads at that worthless sports channel owned by that worthless network have been silenced on all the hot seat talk because “Ears McGarity” extended his contract, but I happen to know for a fact that there are HUGE boosters that have Richt at the end of their rope, and I have been told that McGarity will not jeopardize his standing as A.D. to protect Richt’s status as head coach. There will be a new president at UGA in 2013, and from what I am hearing he will be more football friendly than the P.O.S. Adams, and when large amounts of revenue is withheld because of an inept football coach, he will be forced to act. The sad part of all of this for the Dawg Nation, is that it will be forced to endure two more years of “Mark Richt Ball”. This is a SHAME.

THOUSANDS of kids looked good in high school. This guy hasen’t played one meaningful down of Georgia football. Aaron Murray was recruited heavily by the majority of schools, can’t say that for your boy Mason. Mason didn’t have half the offers Murray did for a reason, he just “ain’t” got it and a lot of coaches have seen it hence the lack of offers. Murray has actually been as bad as you can perform in big games, Murray is something like 1-11 vs. teams that end up top 25 ranked.

And Murray’s numbers against ranked teams, in 2011 & 2011, are about as bad as you can be. It is puzzling why the Georgia coaches think Murray’s so good.

Must be how Murray does against teams with losing records.

Surprised Mason didn’t get rotated in, say every 3rd series this past season if he so good. Makes the promises from Georgia look empty.

Then you have Bryce Ramsey coming in this year, redshirting, he won’t want to sit the bench for 2 years. And if Ramsey turns out to be better than Mason, will Mason ever start a game?

Mason has outplayed Murray every chance he’s had in scrimmages, spring games. No one seems to notice at Georgia.

Coaches are taking Mason for granted, is that smart?

If Murray comes back, will Hutson Mason transfer? I’d love him to stay, but if were him, if Murray comes back, based on how the coaches have ignored him for years so far, I’d leave. We’ll know soon enough.

If you are Murray why would you come back? He’s lost his entire defense and he already will have his masters degree. They are a 9-3 team if he comes back…and a 5-7 team if he doesn’t. UGA was the only major school to give Mason an offer. Fact is high school secondaries aren’t built to shut down QBs who can throw the ball downfield. Anyone see the kid from Alpharetta High School this year, kid slung it all over the yard every Friday…he’s going to Arizona St. Not exactly top of the line when it comes to football. Yes, he could have had a few more shots in the end zone if we had not caught the last pass. By the way, was it AM who gave up 350 yards rushing to Bama? Was it AM last year who failed to tackle the Honey Badger on those punt returns? The answer is HELL NO!!!!! If Murray decides to stay then Georgia will be ok and if he decides to go Georgia will still be ok, if it’s true that Mason is as good as advertised ?

I feel that with the quality of quarterbacks Georgia has and those that will be coming in Georgia’s qb position is in good hands.

I want any player that plays at Georgia to make a sensible and reasonable decision college vs Nfl matters after considerable soul-searching and consultation with those around him. So best of luck whatever Murray decides on.

And YOU lose credibility when you insinuate “thousands” of QBs threw for 4500+ yards and 54 TDs, both Ga State records that Mason owns by the way. All of which you should know if you are a UGA fan.

The “gun it” remark was in response to a comment about his arm strength – look at some his highlights, and you’ll see dozens of 50+ yard completions.

And the “he just ain’t got it” remark is just idiotic.

Could all of those D1 coaches have been so wrong…hope so…not one scholarship offer other than UGA

Knock on him was arm strength, field of vision, footwork (can’t believe those schools wouldn’t see as diamond in the rough and be willing to take a chance)

Glad he looked good in HS because it does indicate that there may be an upside

Does he take to coaching, is he coachable, is he set in is ways, has something changed since he got on UGA campus, has he benefited from working with one of the premier QB coaches in the nation, has he benefited from working with an unselfish QB (Murray) who gathers the entire offense together (if they so choose to do so) on weekends, after practice, anytime

Would any other QB whose name wasn’t Arron Murray stay silent while a backup QB keeps his name in the news by “explaining” his time on the sideline.

Has any backup got so much print by not playing a meaningful down, let alone a whole series

He stays revelant only by whining in the press

What if Mett had stayed, would he have transfered, why come to a school that had to Elite 11 QB’s on scholarship…I’m sure CMR made it clear to Mason that either Murray, or Mett, were going to transfer so that they could play…Mason knew then that he was going to be standing on the sidelines holding a clipboard until either Mett, or Murray, were finished with their time in Athens

So,I’ll go out on a limb and state that Hutson knew coming in what his role was to be, and if he didn’t then, well, maybe you don’t have the football savvy required to be know your role on at a D! program…sorry it’s not HS…I hope you pan out, and further that Bobo/Richt/Murray have you ready to take over the reins and perform at a very high level right out of the box

If he gets a chance, with this extremly talented returning offense, then he should get a few games, and if he fails then start working in the future QB and thank Hutson for sticking around at UGA these seasons

6′3″ 210 lbs. You must mean ANTHONY JENNINGS. You know, Richt and Bobo just refuse to change don’t they. Year after year after year it’s the same old thing. David Greene, Joe Cox from N. Carolina. Then. Joe T. III, then Matt Stafford, then Aaron Murray, now this kid. And still no National Title. The last time you won the SEC was with DJ Shockley. Why not emulate what brought you that success? They just refuse to do it. 33 years. Look for that number to go up.

I have no other references because he has played behind one of the best QBs in the country for his entire career at UGA.

Here’s a little something for your Joe T comparison:

Senior HS seasons:

Joe Tereshinski III 1642 yds passing 23 TDs

Hutson Mason 4560 yds passing 56 TDs

One of them was a fullback who could throw it a little.

The other is a pure passer.

You’ll see.

Carl Spackler, Iowa offered Mason a schollie, but when UGA offered, he ended his recruiting process.

Richt’s decision to not offer the best dual threat Quarteback in America and UGA LEGACY Anthony Jennings borders on insane. To make matters worse he and Bobo stand by and watch him commit to two time National title winner LSU, who rolls back on your schedule next year. Jennings won the Elite 11 regionals over 90 other QB(s), including Bryce Ramsey, who didn’t place in the finals. After playing Marietta this year, Newnan’s Head Coach was quoted as saying, “If there’s a better Quarterback in the State, we don’t want to face him.” Lowndes County’s Coach, “He’s everthing they said he was and more.” To be aware of these facts and to still not go after the kid makes you question the competency of Richt and, in particular, Bobo. Jennings, just like Cam Newton, whom Richt/Bobo evaluated as a tight end, is going to make you pay.

Anybody who thinks QB’s like Murray come along every year are not living in reality – the kid has been great at UGA – from what I have seen of Mason he is a very accurate QB – he may not have the arm strength AM has, though. In any case, he can get it done. And if AM decides to leave, we can be sure Bobo will tailor Mason’s strengths to the offense. Next year the O line will be seasoned and the skill players will be very good – the RB’s will be a year stronger and smarter. We’ll be fine whichever way it goes. Murray has been a DGD at UGA….a stellar athlete and student – we should be so lucky to get another one like him in the near future.

Tide Roll – UGA does not run the spread – we don’t need a dual threat QB. Nor does Bama. We got the QB we wanted – the one Saban said was one of the best prospects at the position he had seen in some time. UGA is not going to reform their offensive philosophy around one player – no coach would unless he just took over a program and was changing over to a new system. The fact we passed on him just means he wasn’t what we were looking for.

Tell him again , Roll Tide just can’t believe Richt wouldn’t change everything for the second coming God like player in Jennings.
For me personally I like a pocket passer concept because when you have a spread Offense you are the next play away from losing your Quarterback to a season ending.injury. With a Pocket Quarterback all he has to do is handle the ball cleanly and throw the ball. He might have to run the ball 3 or 4 times in a game. I Quarterbacked a little and I can tell you the more mobile you are when you release the ball the less likely to be able to completely control exactly where you want the ball to end up. As any Quarterback the most important thing is to have pin point accuracy along with a strong arm . Interception will kill a team.
My biggest concern is if Murray returns and Ramsey looks like the next coming of Joe Namath. Ramsey will Red Shirt in 2013 but if Ramsey is great, has Richt promised too much to Mason and will Ramsey get a fair chance to be Georgia’s starter in 2014. I want Mason as Georgia’s Quarterback in 2014 but only if he is the best on the team.

Ramsey definitely has a lot to learn but he is coming in early and there was no question that he was going to Red Shirt for 2013.That gives him one and a half years to learn from Bobo. I just don’t want to lose a year of eligibility in 2014 while he is own the bench if he is the best Quarterback on the team because Richt has promised Mason the starting position as a reward for staying with the team. If Mason is the best or if Ramsey is no better than Mason then by all means Mason should get the starting job .

Lemay is the most skillful QB on the roster by far!! He is just needs to learn the playbook and earn the trust of the coaches that he can put the offense the right plays. I think he will take over at QB once Mason leaves or if he gets hurt. The walkkon Welch that plays in front of him is not better it is the coaches sending a sign to Lemay saying we not going to hand it to you, you have to earn it in practice. It is Phycological games the coaches are playing with him right now. But trust me they would love for the light bulb to click with him cause he has all the tools!! Hugh, AM is in the negative when it comes to swag and I think that may have hurt him in some of the bigger games. I will say that I saw a different AM in the SEC CG though and I believe that game was a huge turning part for AM as far as confidence goes. There is no doubt that he is a great QB and I honestly feel like he has the tools to make it in the NFL in the right system.

With that being said, swag or no swag give me another year with AM as our QB and let’s give HM some reps and call it good. I’m not sure how long it’s going to take BR to get our system but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him starting over HM in 14′. No doubt BR will be red shirted if AM
sticks around.

If you have ever watched AM and HM take snaps side by side and if you know anything about foot work, arm strength and field awareness then you can see a big difference between the two with AM being the favored. Don’t get me wrong I do believe HM is a good QB but he is not the same caliber QB that AM is and that’s a fact! But if AM does go to the NFL then I hope and pray that HM proves me wrong in a big way. And if he does then I will come on here and own up to it because I’m a DAWGS fan (the entire team) and not player fan per say.

Aaron Murray vs Hutson Mason is an old story…

Please do a story on DL Jonathan Taylor that’s where UGA needs someone, next year, to step-up big time! With John Jenkins and the possibility of Kwame Geathers leaving early for the NFL draft, plus inside LB’s Alec Ogletree (leaving early) Christian Robinson and Michael Gillard will also be graduating creating a huge hole in the middle of the defense!

Word from fellow teammates and coaches, is that Jonathan Taylor, who was red-shirted this year, and been playing on the scout team all season long, has been totally wearing out the UGA offensive linemen… tossing them around like rag-dolls!

Wowing his teammates and coaches into saying, Taylor is simply “COUNTRY” strong… so it looks like UGA will have at least one strong player stepping up, strapping on the G, to man his spot on the defensive line.

It’s well known among coaches and players there are others players showing-out during practice who are ready to step up and contribute to this team.

But I think Wilson, the QB at Seattle, has improved Murray’s draft stock a lot by his play and being of similar similar size and skill to Murray. It is truly comical how little some of the uga fans know about the team and football in general. Mason will be fine. I coach hs qbs and know a decent one when I see it. His footwork is great, his arm adequate+, and from the last few g-day games and his spot duty he appears to know the offense pretty well. As I have said I think Murray should go. Another year won’t make him 6`3 but for all you guys say in how awful he is if he was an inch and half taller he would be a no-brainer first round pick. He was the most impressive qb at the manning camp last year. My Head coach was there and he even remarked how good he looked and he’s a Florida grad and hates everything UGA. As for Mason he is no Joe t III. Joe had heart and great accuracy but no college arm. He I is not Joe Cox although Joe wasn’t as bad as fans think. He had an enormous amount of pressure on him as he was trying to stuff three years into one. The d was awful his one year and he had no running game. If you wanna worry about what could be the downfall for the dogs next year check the inexperienced d, not the offense. I’m no expert, but comments on here stating Mason will be another Cox or Tereshinski have got me perplexed. Mason has been ready to play at UGA as long as Murray has. Mason has been doing the exact things in practice that Murray has (more accurately). The dog coaches have stated every year that Mason is ready; but they have to play Murray to justify his lofty recruiting status and recruiting battle to get him to Georgia. Future high rated qbs need to see that UGA gives them the benefit of the doubt over someone who might not be as highly sought after.
Again, I’m no expert and its just my opinion. After both Murray and Mason get their shot at the NFL, Mason will be the one to win the playing time somewhere.

Again, we’re just talking and I’m no expert. I think you guys miss what I’m referring to. Two years ago, coach Bobo was filled with angst about Mason, saying he deserved to play according to what he was seeing in practice, Mason has been told every year exept his first that he is SEC ready; but Murray being there at the same time is just unfortunate timing for him; not because he can’t perform as well as Murray; it is because Murray’s status as a recruit was and the battle to sign him (he had offers from a lot of school). Mason has not been beat out of a job from Spring and Summer practice performances; he has been beat out as a result coaching decisions based on perceived status of recruiting. In my opinion, this is why Murray has been given the opportunity and Mason not..

I’ve seen comparisons on these pages of Murray to Drew Brees. Heck, Brees has been making big plays with 3rd and 4th option receivers since his days at Purdue. I agree sloboan, he is prototype – accuracy, arm strength, size, smarts. I saw him in the playoffs his senior season, yes in high school, but that level of high school in this state is as good or better than any other state.

He had already committed to UGA, so I was there to see him play, and he put on a show. He is still the best natural passer I’ve ever seen in HS.

And Mason is accurate throwing from the pocket or on the run, and CAN make all the throws. And look who’s he’s practiced against – a bunch of guys headed to, or already in the NFL. Justin Houstin, Jarvis Jones, Rambo, Jenkins, ‘Tree, on and on.

And, you will never hear Richt refer to Hutson Mason as a “good game manager.”

They didn’t push him out or encourage him to leave because they knew he is better than Mason and that Georgia is better off with him than without.
As much as Bobo has improved on play calling and Murray improved on audibles and just running the Offense , If he decide to come back for one more year , Georgia’s Offensive Stats. will be in the top 5 Nationally in 2013. 7576DAWG. I think Murray works hard, tries hard and is a devoted dog..I don’t agree that the best players on a team always get selected to play. I think Georgia is especially guilty of this at times when some players get absolutely no game playing time (meaningful). The coaching decision in Murray’s favor for playing time the last 3 years is very debatable given the fact of their own statements regarding Mason as deserving to play based on what they see against their own defense in scrimmaging. Murray graded better while in the recruiting process and at passing camps (which Mason never attended); not so much in the dogs own spring and summer scrimmages.
Again, I’m no expert and everything from me is current opinion from observing the dogs performances. I think Mason should have had opportunity to improve on some of Murray’s bad performances earlier. In my opinion, he would have been as good or better.

Bray I understand is returning for another year. Tyler Wilson is the only other one I would take over Murray if I were an NFL team. Barkley has been IMO all hat and no cattle. He is actually what Murray has been accused of, unable to perform when it mattered. Landry and Geno has an arm but, nothing overwhelming

Aaron should stay for his final year, sharing snaps with Mason. The cure for our young D is to pile up all the points we can to give our young D a cushion. No doubt they’ll need it with this schedule.

I have a feeling AM will declare for the draft. He may have a career in NFL but only as a back-up though. We will be ok on O either way with Gurshell coming back for at least two more seasons – as long as we don’t have any off-season shenanigans or injuries.

With Georgia’s schedule and the patsies they have played for the last 3 years, it’s a crime that Mason has not played a single down. Richt has no one to blame but himself for not getting this young man into some games, instead of letting Murray build his stats. Any outstanding young player out there should watch this very carefully if they want to sit on the sidelines knowing they could start anywhere else – they won’t even play against the SEC doormats at UGA.

dap01: Very clever; good one..! I think. (more receivers than my momma?) Momma never fumbled, had passes batted at the line of scrimmage, attempted 40 yard passes on third down and two and knew when to call a spiked ball when needed. Momma also read defenses and audibled like a three year starter. The reason Momma was so good is that she had 1 or 2 good players competing for her position and knew she would come out if she sucked.
Murray does hit a lot of receivers: if they are the first option on whatever play is called.

One final comment to close out this blog. Barkley stayed when he should have declared last year. Same for Jones, in my opinion. Had to prove in one case that he was over the injury, and in the other, got injured at the end of this season. You never can tell. Murray needs more advice than from Mel Kiper, who is a media guy hustling for a story.

Everybody knows there will be no QB change unless Aaron Murray decides there will be.

Please leave so a potential QB with necessary skills to win big games gets his opportunity — Hutson Mason

UGA under Mark Richt has a track record of starting QB’s with lesser skills:
Joe T started over Matt Stafford
David Greene started over DJ Shockley
Joe Cox starting over Zach Mettenberger
Aaron Murray starting over the state of Georgia’s td and passing yards record holder Hutson Mason.

Mason is an INCREDIBLE QB.

In 2009, kid threw for 6 td’s in one game, 6 td’s in a 2nd game, and threw for 7 td’s IN A PLAYOFF GAME!

Also, Hutson Mason has the state record for td’s and yards in a season.

Mason threw for over 500 yards 2x in 2009, and over 450 in a 3rd game.

Mason also completed 77% of his passes in 2009!!!!!

Aaron Murray needs to have a serious conversation with Herschel Walker about how much his senior season might mean to him later in life. I don’t begrudge anyone who wants to earn a lot of money, but Aaron has the chance to build memories and a legacy at UGA that are priceless.

Murray is staying, We need Murray in 2013, because we are going to have to outscore everybody. And because, we likely will, Mason will get significant PT. Ramsey will probably RS ‘13 and battle for the back up role ‘14 (and the appearant starter in ‘15).

Mason will start in 2014, with a very mature offense around him, and hopefully a defense that is experienced by then.

(BTW, Joe Cox HARDLY had Gurshall behind him. The guy was not actually a decent QB, he just couldnt carry it on his own)

Somebody wrote that Joe Montana was only 5′11″. But If I remember correctly there weren’t that many 6′5″ & 6′6″ D Linemen back then. And I think Joe did a lot of roll out passing. It is said that size doesn’t matter…I don’t think that holds true when the NFL is drafting players. I think there will also come a time in the not too distant future, D Backs will be 6′4′ to 6′6” with 4.3 – 4.4 closing speed. For short Q Backs it will be like having to throw over a mountain. Remember when 6′5″ was considered tall in the NBA? I think we’re seeing a trend now with Q Backs that have great speed, can get outside away from those tall linemen, and can pass accurately on the run.Give me somebody else’s ideas on the subject!! I’m no expert, just an observer.

@Franck, Murray didn’t choke in the Bama game. The fact that UGA didn’t win doesn’t mean Murray did anything wrong. He played well and if the Bama LB doesn’t tip the pass at the end, you might have had one more shot at the end-zone. He got you down the field to have that opportunity. As far as the result, that was coaching as much as anything. Don’t fool yourself.

Dondog….This is the SEC, not high school football. The only thing great about Mason is his potential. All of the recruited quarterbacks have that potential. Many great college quarterbacks were drafted into the NFL with that potential and never made it. You can be real cool in practice and holding a clip board, but when you get on the field in real time it’s different. When you have 3 -350lb linemen and 4 -250lb linebackers that just want to get to you and tear your head off it’s a little tougher to see where your receivers are, much less get the ball to them. All indications are that Mason will be the man. He has all of the physical skills but if you don’t have the mental toughness to go with them they are useless. We’ll find out if he has that toughness come Sept. 2013
