ATHENS – In the end, Rodney Garner felt like he could no longer ignore his alma mater’s calls for help.

Garner, Georgia’s assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach for the past 12 years, accepted an offer to handle the same jobs at Auburn, where he played offensive line and started his coaching career. He will also receive a significant salary increase from the $300,000 a year he earned with the Bulldogs.

But as Garner adamantly pointed out in an exclusive interview with the AJC Thursday night, “this is not about the money.”

“It was a very difficult decision,” Garner said. “I’ve been approached many times about this opportunity. But it’s my alma mater. It may be more of a pride thing, just looking at where they are right now and feeling like I really wanted to be a part of getting them back on track. I just felt like God was leading me in this direction. It’s something I prayed about and it was not an easy decision. I would not have left for any other reason than Auburn.”

Garner, 46, has received overtures from Auburn several times over the years, including from Tommy Tuberville and Gene Chizik. Chizik was dismissed after the Tigers went 3-9 this past season. Gus Malzahn, who was Chizik’s offensive coordinator but left to become head coach at Arkansas State, was hired by Auburn on Dec. 4.

Garner has spent the last 12 seasons at Georgia working under head coach Mark Richt. He was hired at UGA by former coach Jim Donnan in 1998. A native of Leeds, Ala., he played for the Tigers under Pat Dye from 1984-88. He also met his wife Kimberly there.

Garner will join the Tigers’ staff immediately.

“It’s just time,” Garner said. “I’ve been at Georgia 15 years. It’s been awesome. Worked for two great head coaches at the University of Georgia. Jim Donnan gave me the opportunity to come here, who I have a tremendous amount of respect and love for. And then Coach Richt who retained me and I worked for him for 12 years. Coach Donnan is already in the Hall of Fame, and I’m sure Coach Richt will be one day. So it was a very difficult decision.”

Garner said he spent a long time Thursday counseling with Georgia’s team chaplain Thomas Settles about his decision, then a long time talking to Richt Thursday night.

“It’s difficult because you’re going to a rival school,” Garner said. “Mark has been very good to me and I want people to know that. People need to recognize the body of work that Mark has done here. Here’s a guy who has been at Georgia 12 years and he’s gone to the (SEC) championship game five times. Prior to him coming there, they’d never been to that game. I look at what he’s done there for 12 years, the way he’s done it, the way he’s won with class and integrity, and he’s just been a great guy to work for. So it’s hard leaving him. I mean it really was. But everything I hear about Coach (Gus) Malzahn is that he’s that same caliber of man, cut from that same cloth, and I think it will be a family-friendly environment, which is important to me, with a wife and six daughters.”

Many preliminary reports about Garner’s interest in joining the Auburn hinted at discord between him and Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“The defensive staff we had at Georgia, Coach Grantham, I just think he’s great; he’s awesome,” Garner said. “I think Todd deserves to be a head coach. I was really thinking he’d get some shots at it this year. I think he’s one of the brightest minds I’ve ever been around. Then Scott (Lakatos) and KO (Kirk Olivadotti), we just had a lot of chemistry on that staff.”

Garner would not discuss the financial terms of his contract with Auburn other than to say, “it’s a good deal.” He was on a yearly contract with Bulldogs.

“I’m sure at some point it will all become public record, but that’s not what this was about,” he reiterated.

Regardless, Garner’s departure comes at a complicated time for Georgia. The Bulldogs are in the midst of recruiting their biggest class of the restricted-scholarship era  — around 35 in all — and obviously Garner is the hub of that effort. Best known for attracting great defensive linemen to come play for him, Georgia has been considered a leader for junior college all-star Toby Johnson and 5-star defensive tackle Montravius Adams of Dooly County. Both signings could now be in jeopardy.

“I’m kind of surprised, but it helps Auburn,” Adams told 247Sports. “We have a great relationship. He’s a great guy. I know that he’s a guy that will get defensive linemen to the league. I wouldn’t mind him being a guy that coaches me for three or four years. He’s going to be a guy that I’m going to be with most of the time besides the weight-training guy.”

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs was the first to announce Garner’s hire via Twitter. Auburn later sent out a news release that quoted Malzahn and Garner.

“We’re excited to announce Rodney Garner as our assistant head coach and defensive line coach,” Malzahn said in the statement. “Rodney is one of the top defensive line coaches in college football who has had great success in the Southeastern Conference. We’re excited to welcome an Auburn man back home.”

Said Garner: “I owe a lot to Auburn and the men who helped mold me to who I am today both professionally and personally. I’m very appreciative to Coach Malzahn for this opportunity and I feel very strongly that I can be an asset to the program. I have a lot of love for Auburn and I felt this was a great chance to help give back to a place that has given me so much. I look forward to helping get Auburn back to where it belongs.”

Richt finally acknowledged Garner’s departure in a statement released at 11 a.m. Friday:

“I want to thank Rodney for 15 years of loyal service to UGA. He was the first assistant I hired when I came to Georgia and it turned out to be a great decision. He’s a tremendous ball coach, recruiter, and mentor and a great example of what a good father and husband should be. He’s been a blessing to my life as well as to UGA. We wish him and Kim all the best.”

Garner WILL be the new ‘Trooper’!!

Former AU Coach Terry Bowden said…

“So I hired Wayne Hall. One week on the job, Hall came in with a ledger of players who have been paid, who paid the money, how much money and when it was paid. He said we’ve still got 9-12 players that we’re paying $600 per month”.

“We paid then $12,000-$15,000 to sign. We sign about four every year that we pay.(Former assistant coach RODNEY) GARNER paid most of the players. He was paid when he was a player at Auburn.(Stacey) Danley is the assistant compliance guy, and he was paid when he was a player. I broke the rules. I said pay it off, and it will never happen again”.

Hall said “OK, but you will change your mind.” Katherine came to Auburn as my assistant, but she worked for Colonial. We were real close. I told Lowder “We have cash all over.” Lowder said “I told Wayne not to collect more than we had to have to pay the players.” Wayne had a safe in his house wherehe kept the money. Within two weeks of me being hired they told me about paying Jelks.

Nothing was done without Lowder knowing. I will go under oath and say that Lowder looked me in the eyes and said, “I didn’t want Wayne to collect more money than we needed to pay the players.” I was hiding a dirty secret. We were paying (star running back and current Washington Redskin) Steve Davis and his cousin the fullback.

Regardless of his coaching ability, one thing is SURE about Rodney Garner…..HE IS AN EXCELLENT RECRUITER. That is why UGA hired him from Tenn. His loss will absolutely be felt. UGA will likely LOSE recruits THIS YEAR due to him leaving. This is NOT good PRIOR to SIGNING DAY….Auburn sucks and will continue to suck. They NEEDED Garner BADLY to help get some kids in there especially since they were losing some this year. The only positive thing about him going now is that Auburn sucks so bad, recruits are not going to go there to rebuild. I wouldnt. This new coach would have to have shown something before he ends up being another Chizik and sucks and is gone too.

This is NOT good for UGA though. NOT GOOD…What he does best IS recruit. And he led UGA recruiting and while some offers were slow….kids really like him. Sucks right before signing day….!

I would think from the way M. Adams talked, our chances of seeing M. Adams at UGA just went way down. Oh well, we can’t get all of the folks we want. Adams will sure be able to shine at Auburn, since with the defections they have had, he will be a star and stand out from the rest for the next couple of years.
I don’t know how much difference it will make for UGA if Garner is here or not. I think the kids come to UGA, more for CMR and Coach Grantham, than by any recruiting Coach Garner does. Still he has been a mainstay for 15 years so if he can get more money a another school, good luck to him.

Richt should be on the phone right now with Travis Jones former UGA captain and current assistant dline coach for the saints. He has stated several times that he would love to return to his alma mater. The nfl experience of 8yrs is a bonus in knowledge and scheme plus recruits love a nfl coach. Jones was also a defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at LSU , so he has sec experience as well. Lastly he is also from the state of Georgia.

One attractive aspect for Garner ihad to be that now he can pay significant amounts of money to recruits and players. Add this to his excellent recruiting ability and Auburn might be back in the thick of things quick!…..NEVER trust an Auburn guy…..NEVER.

They have been trying to cheat and do whatever it takes to keep up with Bama at least the last 20 years and been busted numerous times. Probably been going on bad for 25 years. They have been successful at their goal too. But you ALWAYS reap what you sow and it comes back to bite them. Hopefully they will pay for this last fiasco that won them the national Championship(Cameron Newton)for at least a decade….cheaters. SO jealous of Bama it is ALL they think about over there. Seeing that most of this class is locked up with a month to go I doubt Garner leaving has much impact at all with UGA’s recruiting this year. I don’t think most guys were committing to play for UGA because of Garner. The main players he was recruiting was Shaq Wiggens who is a DB and Mastafa who is an OLB. If u want to solidify this recruiting class with Adams, Johnson, and even possibly Mr.Nkemdiche, go out and get a guy that has not only won a MNC but a Super Bowl ring as well. This recruits today want to know if they have the talent their coach can get them to the league and Travis Jones and his resume is a resounding Y-E-S !!!!

I guess the question for the recruits this year is do you want to go to a program that has been having success the last couple of years or somewhere that they are starting over. Auburn will not get a sniff of the SECCG for the next 5 years if ever competing with Bama,LSU, and now A&M.

Don’t mind him leaving but why now? Why knife UGA in the back with the recruits? Why would God “lead him” to leave in an uneithical and unfair way? Leaving now puts him squarely in position to influence (even if indirectly) some prime UGA recruits to switch to Auburn. I don’t think it’s right in any system of ethics. But since he prayed about it … it’s all good.

You are right. For a few years Georgia’s recruiting had started to slip until Bobo and Lilly stepped up. It was mostly Bobo and Lilly that reeled in Mitchell, Drew, and Rome. You can also add McClendon to that group. Those have been the main three guys the last few years not Garner.

how has recruiting suffered in past few yrs?

Columbus

December 21st, 2012
1:58 am

Anyone who knows the 61-year-old Saban understands his anxious side. He is not a man who puts down roots. He’s a man who pulls them up and then heads for the next job. He has told his own players (as he did at Michigan State) that he was staying one day, then left for LSU the next.

Columbus

December 21st, 2012
1:59 am

Until he got to Alabama, he had not been at a place longer than five years. He’s in his sixth season with Alabama, and as much as you’d think he could coach the Crimson Tide for the remainder of his career, that’s not his style.

Saban likes challenges. He has succeeded in turning around programs, winning national titles at LSU and Alabama.

Another telling trait is that Saban likes to live in denial just as he’s about to go from one place to another. There was the move from Michigan State to LSU. When he left the Miami Dolphins for Alabama, he lied time after time about how he wouldn’t be the Crimson Tide’s next coach.

Columbus

December 21st, 2012
2:03 am

As I posted on Twitter, take the adamant denial for what it’s worth, particularly when another source I spoke with on Thursday claimed that Saban has already begun interviewing potential assistants he would take to the Cleveland Browns with him. The source laid out the timing of how current Browns coach Pat Shurmur will be fired after the season, one or two candidates will be interviewed (complete with the name of a minority candidate) and that Saban will be hired on Jan. 8, the day after Alabama’s BCS title game tilt vs. Notre Dame.

Columbus

December 21st, 2012
2:04 am

That bit of information advances an earlier report by Boston Globe ace NFL writer Greg Bedard about Saban wanting to return to the NFL and that Saban would work with current NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi. Lombardi is a former personnel man with several teams, including Cleveland, Oakland and Denver.

its sad,

You have no idea what you’re talking about. UGA had three african american position coaches prior to Garner leaving and another two or three on the strength staff. Garner not becoming a coordinator has everything to do with his coaching IQ and nothing to do with the color of his skin. Everyone in the Bulldog nation knows that the only reason Garner has stayed around this long was because of his excellent recruiting ability. Our D line’s have underperformed for years, this year being a prime example. UGA has always had the talent, but it has not performed in college like they do when they go to the NFL. Just wait and see how much more improved our line will be next year, with less experience.

I teach at Peachtree Ridge and we have witnessed several of our top defensive players over the years go on to Ohio State, LSU, etc and become All-Conference. When I ask the coaches why the kids didn’t go to Georgia, they say, “Rodney Garner.” And whenever you watch these running backs streak up the middle untouched for 10 yards over and over again, or watch them just bounce off our defensive linemen, it’s the same reason: Rodney Garner. This is good news for us.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Despite a scholarship offer from Oregon State, Elite 11 quarterback Luke Del Rio (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian) has decided to walk on at the University of Alabama. He was previously committed to Oklahoma State.

“I was never going to make a decision just based on if I had a scholarship from that school or not,” Del Rio said. “Obviously, you want to be wanted, and I felt wanted at Alabama. I’m not afraid to work to earn a scholarship. That’s never been a big deal for me. I trust my work ethic, and I feel like I could be able to earn one, eventually.

“It really just came down to what’s the best fit for me. Both of those schools are very similar, Oregon State and Alabama. Both have great coaches, very stable programs. One of the deciding factors was Alabama’s in the South. I’m by my sister (Sister is enrolled at BAMA). I’m originally from the South. I lived in Jacksonville for the past 10 years, so that was really big. And I know a lot of people who go to Alabama. I just felt more comfortable coming to Alabama.”

Alabama rallied behind a punishing run game, finishing with 350 yards on the ground, an SEC championship game record. Eddie Lacy – the game’s MVP – rumbled for 181 yards on 20 carries, including two TDs. Freshman T.J. Yeldon added 153 yards on 25 carries, also scoring a TD.

It may be that Garner sees the prospect of becoming a head coach at turkey buzzard U. Good luck to him. That said Garner’s job as head recruiter was littered with bad picks. Example:Grantham’s 3-4 D has to have a dominating big man in the middle. Jenkins was supposed to be that guy and he came up short. Thus you have rushing games like SC and Bama put up. There will be some defections to turkey buzzard heaven because of the hire but by next season he will be just another ex-coach trying to help bail out the program and that ain’t going to be easy.

Rodney Garner has twenty-four years coaching experience at the college football level and has never beeen seriously considered for a head coaching position at the FBS level. It’s much the same at most FBS universities. You can go get them for us, but you will not be selected to lead them.

It’s not good riddance. It’s not bad for Georgia. It’s neither It’s normal. It’s the standard deal in college football coaching staffs. Credit Richt, we have less turnover than most. Also, I have to admit, I am a bit tired of, what seems to be a yearly thing with Garner possible leaving (how many times for Auburn). Best of luck to him.

Plenty of guys are good recruiters. Plenty of guys are good D-line coach. I expect that Grantham knows a thing or two about coaching D-line. Rightfully, that’s what he would have coached had Garner not been a fixture there. Maybe we hire a LB coach instead. Maybe the new guy loves Special teams……huh?

It’s kind of exciting if you ask me. Get some new blood in the staff. Good of time as any, with many new starters next year.

Very surprising that Gus would hire Garner after he was paymaster for Dye. Garner is a good recruiter. Hopefully Gus will keep “Garner-quality recruits” (like Ellerbee and Odell Thurman) in line. Garner is a step up from Trooper Taylor but only a very small step. He doesn’t wear his cap sideways.

I think that the title of recruiting co-ordinator gets mistaken as THE recruiter. The Co-ordinator lines up the trips, meetings, scouting, etc. He’s not really who goes out and sits in the living rooms, and high school games, and coaches offices. (although I sure he does his fair share) Read any recruit Bio, and you’ll see specific coaches assigned to inking the kid.

The recruiting this man did is not something easily replaced. His coaching of many future NFL players is not overlooked by recruits.

He got us players in the ATL area and Gwinnett County.

This is a big loss for Georgia. He wanted to go back to his alma mater. You can’t fault him for that.

But, anyone that doesn’t believe that this was ultimately about money is truly naive.

As a 43-year UGA football fan (serious fan) and current booster, I can tell you the history of Auburn derailing Georgia football success is legendary. This is just another example. Georgia’s defensive line recruitment just crashed and probably means they will lose both Johnson and Adams to Auburn and then some (may not sign but one or two DL). What was a likely return to the Dome in 2013 just plummeted to a 9-3 Outback Bowl appearance at best and perhaps one more SEC East title before Richt leaves in a few years. We won’t win another SEC Title for a decade or more. The only thing Richt can do to alleviate the situation is find a defensive line coach with an NFL pedigree to avoid a collapse of the program. You CANNOT WIN in the SEC without a slew of defensive linemen. Both Richt’s legacy and Greg McGarity’s job hinge on a solid hire. Combine that with Adams retirement and the “unknown” as to who will run the University places Georgia football at a crossroads. Could maintain a 9-12 wins-per-season or plummet back to Goff days within five years or less. A LOT of jobs are on the line here!

No sour grapes here. Garner did a good job for UGA as a recruiter. I have never been sold on him as D-line coach though. It shouldn’t take 4 full quarters of missing tackles to see that a big man is rarely brought down when he is hit chest-high! Never did our line try to make leg tackles and the result was… 350 yards rushing! I guess CRG was in grade school when Herschel played for UGA!
But I wish him well… except when playing UGA!

Texas Pete

When you look at all the DL that have been successful in the NFL that Garner recruited, I don’t know how anyone could say he wasn’t valuable for UGA. People didn’t pay Geno Adkins much attention at all on a national level and he instantly became a stud in the NFL so obviously it’s not the talent but the way it’s used that is the consistent problem at UGA.

AltamahaDawg

Everyone is talking about how awful Auburn is right now. I find it interesting that no one has any grasp of historic precedent.

2008 – Auburn was 5-7. Fired the coach. Won the national championship 2 years later.
1998 – Auburn was 3-8. Fired the coach in midseason. Won the SEC West just two years later.
1991-2 – Auburn was 10-11-1 and fired the coach. 1993-4 went 20-1-1.

FACT – Auburn has more perfect seasons in the last 20 years than anyone.

FACT – each of the last 4 Auburn coaches and 5 of the last 6 either have a national championship or could claim one if we counted like some other school (UAT) do. Look at 1983, 1993, 2004, 2010.

Auburn will be back. And sooner than any of you would like to admit. TO all Georgia fans claiming to be glad that Garner is leaving, you sure were screaming from the mountaintops about how great it was to keep him every year that he had offers to go elsewhere.

Welcome home, Coach Garner!

It seems that every couple of years there would be stories about Coach Garner leaving for one job or another, and Georgia would ante up money, title, etc., to keep him. Exactly who was “barking” about Ray Drew, Finer? By the way he’s doing pretty good – had a scooter wreck last summer which set him back. And, you mighta heard, he had a few decent players ahead of him at LB (’11) and at DE this season.

He may not have a Clowney-like impact next year, but I do think he will be a starter.

I suppose Garner tried to leverage his offer from AU for a pay increase. I’m glad UGA stood their ground on the money. Garner has 6 kids. He has to need the money. Those kids will go to college and all will have weddings that must be paid for. Coach Garner is looking out for his financial future. This is good for AU, UGA and Coach Garner. AU gets a guy that has performed at a high level and probably needs to be re-energized after becoming complacent in recent years. UGA will get an excellent young D-line coach that wants to learn under CTG. And Coach Garner protects his financial future. Good luck Coach Garner and UGA. AU, you’re on your own.

Good Luck to ya big guy. I hope you come in second every year!

Slip Bobo in to recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach. Tell Todd to get busy on the phone and find us a DL coach with some cach`e. And it wouldn’t hurt if he knows a little about special teams.

Get on the phone immediately with current recruits and assure them that we will fill this position with a coach as good or better than the one leaving.

Wow, he is good. Make a very nice comment about Coach Grantham and his surprise Grantham is not a head coach yet. This was a very subtle way to let all the defensive recruits know that going to UGA to play for Grantham will mean they play for someone else because Grantham will not be there for more than another year.

That was my take anyway.

Which I don’t know if you noticed but you have a better chance of getting into GT than UGA with a 4.0 gpa out of high school. Get some balls man. How bad has Notre dame sucked the last 2 decades. Garner is a good man but not DC material. He saw the writing on the wall when Grantham was brought in as DC – a position Garner interviewed with Richt for. Garner’s DL has not gotten it done the last two years when big games were on the line. Due to a lack of quality depth the DL wore down in the 2nd half. Garner wiffed on big time DL talent from the state of Georgia this year.: DE’s #1 Nkemdiche #2 Carl Lawson #7 Isaac Rochelle and so far #1 DT Montravius Adams are all from Georgia so far all three DEs are committed out of state and Adams is uncommitted. Garner saw the writing on the wall and got out before the screen door hit him in the behind. At the same time he got a raise. Now Grantham can bring in who h really wants as DL coach – someone with high achivement in both the NFL and on the college level. Auburn is in turmoil and their 2012 class is self destructing. I doubt if Montravius Adams wants to step in to that situation. Whoever Grantham chooses will be a quality teacher and recruiter and he will get a raise – as will Bobo. Toby will stick with UGA and will redshirt this coming year to rehab his injury. I would liketo thank Garner for his service to UGA but it was time for him to move on.

How come Auburn gets away with blatant violation of #@%$ NCAA rules? I’m from Warner Robins, James Brooks came from the poor side of town. After going down and commiting to AU he rolls back to Robins in a brand new ‘78 sports car. It never ends, hell everyone knows Scam Newton’s old man literaly demanded money from any school that wanted the SOB. AU is a dirty school with a filthy athletic program. No respecr for AU, they should be eliminated from the SEC.

@JB, I don’t know… He has coached the college ranks – App State, Kanas & LSU under Saban. So maybe he’d be persuaded to come to his alma mater and home state. They might need to sweeten the deal and offer him more than just position coach but I guess could be a risk to offer him Recruiting Coordinator role too for instance since he has done that in a while.

How many times has Tech been on probation since UGA? At least two or three, and is currently, still in the NCAA’s pokey.

And you are dumber than dirt if you think ANY program offered Herschel inducements – he was the most heavily recruited high schooler ever at that time, and the NCAA had investigators living in Wrightsville.

I like all this Auburn rebuilding talk….Auburn is not rebuilding. They are bouncing back with better coaching. There will be 20 returning starters on this team. You can see by the way we played Clemson and LSU earlier in the year we had talent. This team just flat gave up and the season snowballed big time. When you are constantly reading how bacd you suck, your coach is getting fired, and you were only good because of Cam Newton you eventually stop playing and that’s what happened. There is new blood and the players are going to have to go back to impressing their coaches which will make them better. That’s why Malzahn cleaned the coaching staff. No more of the same. These players will have to earn their position. There is plenty of talent and I am really liking next year’s schedule. This will be an immediate turn around. At least 8-5 next year and will compete for the SEC in 2014. Watch.

He could also help in the area of recruiting having done so previously. He works with other pros, top college and high school athletes thru his training company in helping to develop the skill level of D Line players at all levels. Great football mind and a home town guy that could step into Coach Garners former role. UGA should consider this guy seriously!!!!

Does not make sense to make CMB in charge of recruiting. A couple of reasons. First the offense did their job this season. So why lose your OC which is a huge position that Bobo has spent many seasons developing his craft. Also, he will be a head coach some day in the not to distant future I suspect. So it does not make sense to change for short term. I also am not sure how long CTG will stay if opportunity knocks. So a young coach like McClendon who is popular among young players seems the most logical of choices of existing staff.

1. Anyone who thinks Garner wasn’t feeling pressure, after giving up 300+ yards rushing in each of the last 3 games, after finishing 79th in the country in rush defense, has no clue. Last 3 years, against ranked teams, Garner’s d-line dropped from a decent 35th in rush defense in 10′, to 48th in 11′ to 70th in 12′. Grantham wouldn’t be a solid coach if he didn’t have a SERIOUS talk with Garner concerning his anemic rush defense and the direction of the rush defense over the last 2 seasons.

2. How do you finish 79th in rush defense with Jarvis Jones, John Jenkins, and Alex Ogletree, three future NFL 1st round draftpicks? no excuse, that’s incomprehensible. At a minimum, it’s one of the epic fails of all time considering the defensive talent UGA had in 12′. Worst case, means Garner was not being able to coach em up.

3. Getting humiliated and gashed for 350 yards rushing in the SEC Championship didn’t help Garner, that’s for sure. After all, no other SEC defense got pummeled that bad by Alabama, with a LOT less talent than UGA had.

4. He said it wasn’t about MONEY, but he just HAPPENED to receive a significant pay increase. What a coincidence?

5. Jim Donnan is not a great coach. Garner thinks so, says a lot about his ability to evaluate talent

6. If you’re going to leave, head out West or coach a team in a different conference, Garner left to play for one of UGA’s biggest annual rivalries. You don’t do that to one of the classiest coaches of all time, Mark Richt. Really a low ball move.

7. Garner appears to be full of Garner, he’s had countless opportunities to coach elsewhere, 79th in rush defense, sure they were beating the door down.

8. Auburn got a dline coach that ranked 79th against the run. Wow, really impressed.

Grantham has done a terrific job.

a) His OLB has finished in the top 10 in sacks in 2010, 2011, 2012. Jones was No 1 or No 2 in 2011 & 2012 in sacks nationally, and was a 2 time All American at Georgia. Houston was #8 in sacks in 2010.
b) His defenses have finishes in the top 20 in defensive scring nationally 2 out of the last 3 seasons.
c) His olb’s have heled UGA rank #15 in sacks, against ranked teams. That’s ballin’.

UGA was Top 10 in pass defense, could be because couldn’t stop the run. But still, you have a top 10 pass defense, and a top 20 scoring defense against ranked teams, so shore up the run defense, and the defense should be much better.

Garner, real, real glad he’s gone, his rush defense was ranked @#80 nationally in 2012. He was the weak link on the defense.

Olivadotti needs to step up this year, or he might be next in line.

I have stated before that I wondered if Coach Garner needed to update his line techniques because if you watch our line they do not get any penetration. A noseguard isn’t supposed to just sit there an soak up double teams. They are supposed to force double teams by disrupting the middle of the line. Our guys don’t penetrate, they dance around with the guard and center and act like a big moving pick for the back. This is why our rush defense is lagging. The LB’s are tackling guys laterally as they are coming through the hole… dodging that moving pick. The back has a couple of yards by default because of it. Anybody else see this?
Anyway, I appreciate Coach Garner’s decision to go help out his alma mater. More money doesn’t hurt but I don’t think it was the only factor by far. Good luck at Auburn.

Good luck coach Garner and I wish you the best. As for UGA it will be better because they will hire a better person for the job.

PutIn- I know that you had hoped to have progressed in 2012 enough to actally post in a blog for your team but inspite of it all you are still trolling. You still don’t have a girlfriend, you still pull for a team that is bad and getting worse and your face still has a white head or two that needs popping.

GT simply does not matter anymore in football

GT has not been to two major bowl games in a row since the mid 1950s. That says itvall about GT football.

Bobby Dodd was done by the late 1950s, because he never attended a major bowl game after 1955 or 1956 but one. He was slaughtered in that last one, in the 1967 or 1968 Orange Bowl by the U of Florida where he son Jr. Played QB. Even BD Jr,. KNEW then, that GT was a joke.

CPJ is on the hot seat. All GT football coaches end up on the hot seat, after two or three shaky Yeats and CPJ is theta. NEXT !!!
