ATHENS -- For all the adoration heaped upon Georgia’s defense and its cavalcade of all-star players this season, it hasn’t been all that good at the one thing considered a cornerstone of being great – stopping the run.
The fact is, the Bulldogs exited the 2012 regular season ranked among the bottom third in the nation in rush defense. They’ve given up an averaged 177.77 yards per game, which is 77th among 120 FBS teams.
Most notably, the last time we saw it in action, the Georgia defense gave up 350 yards on the ground to Alabama in the SEC Championship. For all the debate about whether the Bulldogs should have spiked the ball or not in the closing seconds, it could be argued the inability to stop the run is the reason they lost the game 32-28.
“Some of it was just wrapping them up better,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said of the Alabama debacle. “I told them going in, ‘You’re not going to be able to knock these guys down. You might knock them down a time or two, but if your goal is to just knock them down, you’re not going to be able to do it. You’re going to get embarrassed. You’ve got to wrap up and run your feet until you get them on the ground.’”
That didn’t happen. Eddie Lacy rushed for 181 yards and T.J. Yeldon for 153. And most of the Crimson Tide’s production came between the tackles. Linebackers Alec Ogletree and Mike Gillard were unable to bring the down their backs at the point of contact and safeties Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams spent more time unsuccessfully trying to snatch away the football than stopping the Bama’s backs progress.
The Alabama game continued a disturbing trend toward the end of the season. It was the third game in a row in which the Bulldogs gave up 300 or more yards rushing. Including contests against triple-option specialists Georgia Southern (302 yards) and Georgia Tech (306), Georgia gave up 958 yards rushing during that stretch. It came on an average of 58.6 attempts and 5.4 yards per carry.
“It is surprising considering how well we did last year in the run game and having most of the guys back,” said senior linebacker Christian Robinson, one of 10 starters back for a defense that finished 11th in the nation against the run in 2011 (101.21 ypg). “We just gave up too many big plays, too many big runs. Those factor into why it may look so bad. But we should have been better and we have to be better in this last one.”
Enter Nebraska. The Bulldogs’ opponent in the Jan. 1 Capital One Bowl in Orlando comes into the game ranked eighth in the nation in rushing (254.5 ypg). The Cornhuskers are led by sophomore running back Ameer Abdullah ( 1,089 yards, 8 touchdowns) and dual-threat quarterback Taylor Martinez (973, 10). Both players are averaging more than five yards a carry.
The Bulldogs are a double-digit favorite over Nebraska. But if they’re not able to control the Cornhuskers’ rushing attack, they could be in trouble.
“Personally, I don’t think we need to do different,” senior linebacker Mike Gilliard said. “We just need to go out there and continue to do what we’re doing. I have 110 percent, complete faith in our defense against the run. I don’t think we need to change anything. Just keep doing what we’ve been doing, everybody run to the ball and play fundamental, sound football and we’ll be all right.”
Gilliard’s attitude reflects that of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who insisted he’s not disappointed in the Bulldogs’ run defense this season.
Grantham said Georgia’s stats against the rush are a bit “skewed.” He called the games against Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech “irrelevant” due to the unique nature of their schemes. And the Bulldogs played their first four games without two of their better run defenders in Ogletree and Rambo, who were suspended.
“We were pretty low in points allowed this year,” Grantham said. “As a matter of fact, lower than we were last year. That’s really more important than anything. We got to the SEC championship game two years in a row. To me those things are more important than stats.”
Georgia did have a few run-stuffing efforts. Missouri managed just 102 yards on the ground, Vanderbilt just 106 and neither Florida (75), Ole Miss (46) nor Auburn (57) managed.
“Certain games we do well and other times we don’t do what we need to,” Robinson said. “We need to be more consistent.”
The Alabama game exposed one of the Bulldogs’ weaknesses, which is depth along the defensive line. For all the accolades John Jenkins, Kwame Geathers and Garrison Smith have received this season, the drop off was pretty steep behind them. Ray Drew, Cornelius Washington and Mike Thornton are good athletes but are undersized when it comes to defending smash-mouth football. As a result, Jenkins, Geathers and Smith played nearly every snap of the Alabama game.
“I thought we got tired at the end of the game,” Grantham said. “I think we’ve got to continue to work and develop some depth. I think if we do that they’ll be fine.”
Georgia hopes to address that through recruiting and up-and-coming players such as redshirted noseguard John Taylor. In the meantime, they’ll have to go with what they’ve got versus the ‘Huskers.
“I think we could have done a whole lot of things better this season,” All-American outside linebacker Jarvis Jones said. “I think we could have played the run better; I think we could’ve played the pass better. I think if we eliminate the big play from Alabama at the end of the third quarter or beginning of the fourth or whatever it was, I think we shut the game out right there.
“It’s just small things, discipline things, we’ve got to work on going into this bowl game. I think if we take care of that, I think we’ll be fine.”

This is why we need Kwame to stick around, to show this Taylor kid the ropes..We had to good-sized guys redshirt, and maybe “Moose” will see his potential value at the nose in this D!! We will need the best we can get with this schedule on the docket!!

I read that depth along the d-line is the biggest problem and that it is being addressed thru recruiting, but then I am constantly reading where UGA is late to the table with defensive guys in our state. Not only our state, but kids in the metro Atlanta area. I don’t understand that.

Defense played a great second half of the season, no reason to worry here. I’d be more worried about motivation coming into this game than talent/scheme. Could someone send a note to Shawn Williams for us to get the boys fired up?

Next year’s d-line will be loaded with Taylor and Atkins and Moose Johnson and Ray Drew. If we land M Adams it will just be more talent.

This game will be closer than most think. I don’t think our defense matches up well with Nebraska with all their running and a dual threat QB. Plus a lot of minds in our defense will be on the NFL draft instead of winning the bowl game. Hopefully our offense comes to play, which I fully expect, and we get the W. I predict a high scoring affair that is decided in the 4th quarter.
You’re welcome.

If UGA wants to stop the run , they need to learn how to tackle. Wrap up the runner instead of all this MMA wanna be tackling like in the TECH game. UGA 3-4 defense is overated, they should go back to a 4-3 front. Tech, GA Southern, KY. and Bama all ran all over them. Throw on TENN., SC, and Buffalo too.

DAWGS had a pretty good season. With the schedule and “talent” it should have been even better. There is no reason why the same personnel from last year could not have improved in stopping the running game, but they did not, no excuses. Not stopping the run cost them the championship game. The D was gassed in the 2nd half. I don’t doubt that they played their heart out. But they did not improve in the run defense from last year. We stunk it up.

Some people try to find things in this game that don’t exist but football is only two things – blocking and tackling.
Georgia got blocked, that is why Alabama got 350 yards and we lost the game. We lost the game on the line of scrimmage.
They played their hearts out and almost won, but they got blocked and beat. Great game of football!
It ain’t rocket science.

The reason Saban ( and I’m ALL Dawg) is a few days away from NC #4 and Mark Richt has NONE is that Saban knows to win championships, you can’t have ANY weak links or phases of the game. You can’t have a great offense and so so defense or vice versa. You can’t have great RB’s and a slack OL. You can’t have a all star QB and no receivers. Saban covers all the basis. Like him or hate him, he has the hardware. Don’t know if Richt gets that.

Depth along the defensive line is often a big part of championship teams and we don’t have quite enough of it. I won’t make any excuses, because we lost, but it would have been nice having Abry Jones against Alabama. Then again, for next year’s sake, it was good he was out because Garrison Smith got a ton of experience and now is more polished for next season, meaning one less starter we’ll have to replace. Drew needs to improve, but I’m glad to see he got some playing time toward the end of the season. Also, I’m excited to see what Ramik Wilson can do next season. He had a big play against Alabama near the goal line the play before Commings picked off McCarron.

I’m very proud of the dawgs for the season they had. We can sit here and say the guys should have done this better, but Alabama’s dominant offensive line outplayed our defensive line. Yeah, it sucks that we didn’t win against Bama, but if you look back the last four years and not many teams have been able to do that. It sucks that Abry wasn’t able to play and that Bennett and Brown were out for the year but Bama had injuries of their own (Kenny Bell, DeAndrew White).
Also, if the dawgs are motivated at all, I don’t see how Georgia loses this game. The Huskers can run the ball, but their defense was torced by Wisconsin and Ohio State. Those teams both scored over 50 on them. Plus, remember what happens when SEC teams play other teams out of conference. The SEC defenses tend to stand out. I believe Georgia’s defense will play very well against Nebraska.

Alabama has only given up 300 yards rushing to an opponent once in Saban’s 6 years, to Georgia Southern in 2011 when they sat all 3 nose tackles with minor injuries to get them healthy for Auburn the following week. Grantham’s defense gives up over 300 yards rushing 3 games in a row and he says he’s not dissatisfied with the run defense? Incredible.

The trend for the Georgia rush defense isn’t looking good:
35th in 2010 to
48th in 2011 to
70th in 2012
The Georgia rush defense is getting 2x worse (35th to 70th in 2 seasons nationally in rush defense), every 2 years under Grantham.
Could be looking at falling to 140th in rush defense in 2014 if Grantham is allowed to continue coaching at Georgia.

Bip, you are forgetting Nebraska does not play in the same caliber of conference as UGA. The other matchup you failed to mention is the Georgia offense versus the Nebraska defense. You do realize that Nebraska gave up 539 yards rushing to Wisconsin. Todd Gurley will run through their defense at will. If he can get 120 on the best run defense in the nation, odds are he is going to get close to 200 in this game.

There were tackling issues during that game, but that wasn’t what cost them the game. The 2 three and outs Ga had before the final stop on Alabama is what cost the game. The offense being unable to move the ball much less score is the difference. the defense had to spend too much time on the field. Look at the time of possession in the game. Several times Ga stopped Alabama but after they had gotten at least one 1st down. the offense got the ball several times and went 3 and out. Keep the time of possession even and Ga wins …..

UGA should win this game if they are motivated. If not Nebraska will look like the Black Shirts of the early 90’s and run all over UGA. So it’s up to UGA if they are up for the game. This Nebraska team is no where near the Black Shirt team.

Agree with an earlier post I read making the following point:
WRAP UP and focus on the tackle, not stripping the ball if you are the first point of contact. Too many times the player was able to gain extra yards while our guy was “up high” trying to strip the ball. Turnovers are great but more times than not, the benefit is in the STUFF!
TACKLE FIRST, turnover second!
Any questions?

That pictcure of Ogletree grabbing up around the shoulders says it all. Well, it says part of it. Richt’s comments about “you can’t just try to knock these guys down or you’ll get embarrassed” says just as much. Instead of in the 13th game of the year the HC suggesting to the players how they should tackle, somebody in summer camp should suggest that if YOU DON”T TACKLE LIKE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO YOUR BUTT WILL BE ON THE BENCH!!! The difference between Bama and UGA is simply the fundamentals, and they are better at those than we are. As a matter of fact, we just don’t play fundamentally sound and that is absolutely unacceptable.

Interesting for the coach to sound like he’s suggesting wrapping up guys you’re tackling. How about, “Either wrap them up with your arms, and drive with your legs until they’re on the ground, or you’ll be running the stadium stairs all next week.”
I don’t think we match up particularly well against Nebraska unless we tackle very, very well, and play fundamentally sound football.
In 6th grade peewee football we knew to tackle right or we’d be running laps all week instead of practicing with the team. I don’t get it that this “knock ‘em down” stuff is a part of Georgia football.
Stripping the ball is sexy as all get out when it works, but tacking has got to come first. Blocking and tackling and holding onto the ball – gotta do these things first and foremost.
Oh, trolls and Nebraska fans, please keep up all the talk about Georgia being soft. I love hearing it.

Grantham is not a good DC, but Richt will keep him regardless. And you are right if Alabama defense had given up that many rushing yards, some heads would have rolled. Grantham thinks he should be making the amount of money Kirby Smart makes at Alabama. Grantham has even made Bobo look complitant.

I’m tired of hearing about the schedule. The schedule was not as hard as some years but that is just the way it goes. We will be back to the SEC championship game and we will win it… sooner than most of you screaming mimis think. We lost the SEC championship game because of pure dumb luck.
In the end we lost 2 games and neither was a shocker. South Carolina did to UGA what UF did to South Carolina. A perfect storm. The Tide escaped humiliation… by 1 freaking fluke play. Yes, humiliation. If you rush the ball for 350 yards you should have 5 or 6 TD’s at minimum. You should be able to run out the clock on the 2 most critical possessions of the game. You should not have a team rip through you like a hot knife through butter on the games final possession. Those of you that want to play the “the Dawgs gave up 350 yards” game need to look at what Bama did not do with that.
1 fluke play. Sure the schedule played a part but the Dawgs won the games they were supposed to win… no slip ups to the sisters of the poor. Sure we lose a bunch of guys on the defense for next year but we will be LOADED on offense. Need I remind you Auburn won the BCS championship with a mediocre defense? The Dawgs defense needs to be good enough early to stop games from becoming shootouts. The offense will move the ball… and score alot.
So stop with the “we blew our only chance for the next 1/2 century” crap. I think we will be pleasantly surprised next year.

Well, it’s been defined…..we need depth on the “D” line and Grantham ain’t worried about stats. In fact, he apparently ain’t worried about very much and that is what worries me. The “D” could have played much better against Alabama than they did……well, why in the hell didn’t he call them over and point out what they were doing wrong……like Gilliard and Williams trying to play take away instead of tackling? Sure hope he can shore up the weaknesses before next season! DAWGS are loaded on offense, just need the defense to catch up and the dome will be waiting again.

A few bottom lines:
1. We haven’t been wrapping up runners since willie Martinez
2. Aaron Murray throws a low trajectory pass last play of game. Does anyone think David Greene, DJ Schockley, or Matthew Stafford throw anything but a high pass in the corner that is either caught or incomplete? Murray did same thing against Fla in overtime a few years back. You gotta loft the ball and no one is talking about that.
3. Was Murray SCREAMING at his receivers before the play “You get the ball anywhere other than end zone or sideline, you DROP it”. Have no idea but he should have.
4. The horrific no call when Murray gets belted 3-4 seconds after throwing the ball is a 6 point turn around. Huge and inexplicable. Replays show official 5-6 feet from Murray
5. Georgia does not want to be in Orlando. They deserve to be in New Orleans and could have been in Miamii. Nebraska expected to be in Pasedena. Instead, a 5 loss team put up 70 on them. Richt somehow gets these guys up for this game and look for something like 56-14. He doesn’t, I still can’t see nebraska doing much but it’ll be closer, 35-24. We have a bend don’t break defense which isn’t great but 350 rushing yards should have yielded minimum 42 points. We lose a lot on D next year. May have to average 40 point per game to end up in Atlanta again. Tougher schedule too but we beat SC and Fla can afford a loss to LSU. Still potential 11-1

A lot of people out there are worried about Georgia being motivated for this game. However, I am more worried about the Huskers motivation than Georgia. Nebraska’s eyes where set on the Rose Bowl just as much as Georgia was set on the NC, as a Husker fan, I have seen this all too much. Georgia will want to proove they where really just one play away, while NE has nothing to play for. Look for another poor performance by NE.

Just like in the early 2000’s when UGA took advantage of a time when UF and UT were down,…the past two seasons are a reflection of the same. In one of those seassons,…SC was the best team in the east,….and just like this year, UGA benefited from the SEC scheduling. I was having a hard enough time digesting Gilliard’s comments, then I read what idiot Grantham said, and wanted to puke. UGA had it’s chance, and in my opinion there probably won’t be another as long as Grantham is in Athens. There is NO excuse for accepting mediocrity in big time college football as a player OR a coach. I have got news for Grantham, the run defense looked horrible up the gut on Buffalo, and Kentucky as well, and a top five SEC team should have NO trouble stopping a team like Buffalo, whether some of his stupid brownie eating starters are suspended or not. The starters were back for the Kentucky game, so i don’t want to hear that B.S. Thank goodness Gilliard is a senior, but unfortunately Georgia is stuck with Grantham. I have not read an article about the team that has made me this mad in a while. If Richt and/or McGarity does not call Grantham out for these comments, then UGA Football is in real trouble.

I do agree that because of southern and tech those numbers are skewed. However, for as many good things as grantham has done for the defense, the lack of wrapping up by the defensive players have been alarming. So many times I saw the defenders with their arms to the side, or more often holding their forearms in front of their body. You can still hit hard and wrap up.

I truly believe that having Abry Jones out since we played Vanderbilt has hurt us a lot. If you noticed, Geathers and Jenkins had to play practically every down. Normally these big guys sub for each other, thus giving them a chance to rest. Smith was being concistently blocked without using any double teams. This put more pressure on Jenkins and Geathers. This was especially noticable in the second half of the Alabama game. Hopefully, Abry will be able to play against Nebraska!

Todd Grantham is the problem. Great athletes on defense, defense can’t stop the run = back scheming, bad coaching. Wake up Dawg nation. Grantham says he’s got it figured out be figures don’t lie. Of course he’s got if figured out, blow smoke up Richt’s ***. Richt needs to show some *alls: Grantham just cost him a shot at a national championship! Coach Friend opened up the competition on the OL for the game. Great idea. Our OL got significantly better as the year progressed, and we lose no one on the OL.
I wonder if the 3-4 plays as well in the SEC as in other, slower conferences. And finally, someone tell
our safeties to go ahead and tackle the ball carrier. Trying to strip the ball while giving up another 5-7
yards, and then NOT causing the fumble is keeping the chains moving for the other team. Watching that all year, I’m surprised we didn’t give up 500 yards a game rushing.

“Aaron Murray throws a low trajectory pass last play of game.”
They’ve explained it was a back shoulder throw. On a back shoulder throw you’re trying to make the momentum of the defender work against him and have the receiver react to the ball before the defender. The objective is to get the ball there quickly, not to lob it.
“Was Murray SCREAMING at his receivers before the play “You get the ball anywhere other than end zone or sideline, you DROP it”. Have no idea but he should have.”
This is so dumb on so many levels it’s laughable. Murray was communicating with the bench on what play to run as he was going down the field, not telling his receivers how to play their positions. How could the receivers have possibly heard Murray yelling at them from 20-30 yards away with the clock ticking down and the crowd roaring? What if a receiver had caught a ball short of the goal line with room to run it in, should he have knocked it down instead of catching it? If Murray didn’t want a ball caught in bounds, he would throw it at somebody’s feet or 10 feet over their head.
jkc313, maybe if Bobo leaves you can get Richt to hire you as offensive coordinator.

“What this article forgot to mention is the fact that Alabama got away with holding the whole game.”
Could one of you sore losers who keeps claiming this point out some specific plays? The most blatant holding non call in the game was a Georgia offensive lineman tackling one of Alabama’s defensive linemen to open the hole for Gurley on his 11 yard touchdown run. It was glaring on the slow motion replay and Danielson said the officials missed it. It should have taken the touchdown off the board and been 1st and 20 from the 21 yard line, which probably means a 4 point swing.

Dawgs frustrating…things are never “fixed”. Example..in 2011 against LSU, game loss in the 2nd half by poor play of the Offense especially the dropped passes and a worn out defense. If I remember LSU didn’t have a 1st down during the 1st half.
This year against Al., again in the 2nd half, game is loss by a worn out defense. Ignoring the bad officiating. Defense is unable to stop the run. Offense kept the outcome in doubt until the last play. A great effort by the Offense. In these two games, the negative was defense play in the second half of both games. A positive was offensive play… great in the 1st half of the LSU game and good over all during the AL. game.
Again, our pre season strenght turn out to be a weakness. Will the Dawgs ever put it together for a championship game? Last two seasons were good with some major exceptions. Have solved the Gator problem?

If we learn to tackle low, much of the rushing yardage would be negated. Tackling high around the shoulder pads won’t cut it and allows the runner to drag our tacklers another 3-5 yards or more.

the middle backers especially number 35 gilliard played horrible in the game. after half gilliar quit trying to take on the linemen and started running around which is why the runs went from 4-6 yds to 10-15 yd runs. he got killed and looked overwhelmed in that game and the d coord. did nothing to fix it. why 52 never even got a chance at middle backer in the sec game makes me scratch my head. i remember after one of the drives i was like there is no way 35 will be back out there after that but he was. one td you can see a safety and an outside backer walking up to 35 with their arms out asking him what he was doing he just shook his head you can see it on film when bama scores toward the end of the game. i said after the game he got killed and even after watching it our d line did not do that bad but 35 played his worst game but i thought all yr 52 was a better inside backer i would love to know why 52 was not playing all he played is special teams in that game. he had to have done something to get in trouble that we dont know about.

everyone saying we will take a step back next yr is crazy. if murray returns out offense will keep us in almost every game. the defense will have new faces that want to make a statement this yr our defense was filled with guys that felt their ticket to the league was already punched. our defense was horrible statistically. we played great against vandy which was a revenge game we played great against florida which was a one dimensional team. this defense for all the superstars on it played very average. our secondary and backers were lost in zone coverage we did not play team defense at all. how many times did we blow coverage in the first six games. we had trouble getting lined up correctly. how many time did south carolina snap it when we were not lined up right. i think todd grantham is way overrated. he is still learning and i expect him to be better next yr. younger guys will play harder trying to make a name for themselves. this defense was trying to stay healthy all yr. look how many of our guys on defense have fallen in the draft since day one. jarvis is the only guy that moved up the board. the others fell especially rambo.

Offense played better then expected and well enough to win the SECCG. Defense, especially run defense cost GA the game.
If as expected the defense loses Tree and JJ, and Kwami, plus normal attrition from graduation then the D will be worse then it was this season. Those of you that think next years crop of D players are going to be better then this years defenders have some lose screws or just blind faith. If the youngsters were that good they would have played more this season but couldn’t unseat the starters so look for a leaky defense next year because whats there isn’t the type for a 3-4 defense. It’ll be a learning experience for these younger guys especially when they’re up against LSU, SC, and rest of the SEC schedule.

To All:
There is no doubt that UGA is a more talented team, while also playing in the SEC. Something that is being said, but understated is the issue of matchups. Nebraska is a “very talented” offensive team that can pile big chunks of rushing yards quickly. They also run similar offense to Oregon, snapping the ball about about every 20 seconds. UGA has alot of speed and power, but if they think that Nebraska is “Ga Tech” or some wacky triple-option team, they are mistaken. The Huskers have a big and physical offensive line, led by All American Spencer Long. Their wide recievers will play on Sundays in a couple year. Kenny Bell, Jamal Turner, Quincy Enuwa, Ben Cotten, Kyler Reed, ect. And for those of you fans down in the south that don’t know Taylor Martinez, start youtubing. The dude is “super fast” and will probably break a couple long runs in the Capital One Bowl.
*Moral of the Story: People in the SEC ( I lived there) think everything is bigger and better. And yes, they have a good conference right now, and UGA is better than Nebraska right now. The fact is, Nebraska (the program) is not far removed from being one of the most dominant college powers in history. Far better than UGA will ever dream of. In addition, players at Nebraska are not scared of SEC teams. Maybe they should be, but they are not. They are Huskers, and really skilled football players at one of the top 4 programs ever. They will come play, I assure you. Dont underestimate Bo Pelini’s defensive scheme too.

Bipper, get real, the big ten is on a par with the acc, some good teams, but defenses are suspect, and this year is no exception, and the huskers although they have some talent on both sides of the ball is likely to get rolled with run and play action, you`ll see that by the 3rd quarter at latest, and ceph, change the monicker to cephalgia, greek for headache, which is what you will experience during and no doubt after the game, root for Mich against SC which will turn out disappointingly for the midwestern fans as well, best team out there is Wisconsin the second half, O state next year will get beat at least twice, if not they will be beat down as usual in the SEC finale. Check the injury list out. CMR is known for not practicing enough before big games. Now we have 2 of our best WRs with injuries, and a few more players. Every injury is just lack of practice and workouts. (typical CMR pee wee football) WV exposed CMR in the bowl game. Nebraska will do the same. The Huskers will run and run and run and run. The Uga defense will get tired. (Just like the Alabama game) CMR told the players that they were not going to run over any Alabama players. What was said at Half tme?? Quit trying to strip the dam ball and get the guy to the ground. This is the SEC!! You are not going to run over many people. Make a good tackle and get back ready to make the next play!!!!!!!!!!!!! The rush defense is ranked 79th nationally.
The defense also gives up bvig points in almost every big game over last 2 seasons:
2011
Boise scored 35, SC scored 45, LSU scored 42, Mich St scored 33 points
2012
SC scored 35, Bama scored 32 points
Only decent sub 30 point effort was vs Florida, a 100th ranked offense.
Good thing Grantham plays all those cupcakes to help keep his scoring average down for the year, but make no mistake, in big games, Grantham is getting throttled.

Gators should of played the winner of the SEC in the NC with the way the gators were ranked. Notre Dame is a good team. They need to be forced to join a conference. I guess Notre dame is to chicken.

Florida was ranked 104 in total offense and 75th in offensive scoring.
So Grantham had a good day against them.
But Grantham has been OUTCOACHED in every single other big game in 2011 or 2012, can’t keep giving up 30+ points and expecting to win games.
Gave up at least 100 yards rushing in every game but 3 or 4 in 2012. Gave up 200 yards rushing to Tenn, 200+ to Kentucky.
Gave up 300+ yards rushing in EACH of the last 3 games, G Southern, Ga Tech, and Alabama, Grantham doesn’t know how to fix it.

Todd G really disappoints me.—he “justifies” giving up LARGE chunks of yards on the ground with the CALIBER OF TALENT on his defense–
These dawgs just don’t hunt in the BIG GAMES!! Again CMR is the ONLY SEC Coach with this level of Talent that has NOT WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!! (MEYER, MILES, CHIZIK, SPURRIER, SABAN ALL GOT IT DONE) This year was a TREMENDOUSLY botched opportunity the dawgs can easily become the ATLANTA BRAVES of the SEC great regular season–but failure certain in the post regualar season….may the lawd hve mercy on us…..”sigh”

Monster Dawg is correct. Throttled!!! I thought the first objective for the Defense is to stop the run. Alabama and Notre Dame play in the trenches. Uga depends way to much on safeties, cbs, and Lbs to make the play. I would love to see the big men not only be used to stuff holes. I believe teams have figured the stuffing up space deal. Look at LSU and Alabama. The DTs are making sacks and stopping the run. I know we have JJones coming off the edge and ogletree flying around. Notre Dame front seven is stout. that is what got ND to the NC game. Saban knows what it take to win in the trenches. I understand that we need more depth, but the entire season Geathers did not play much! Where is Drew? Grantham says we do not have depth. Gratham decides to finally use the big boys together in the NC game. Hell he should played them both together the entire year.

UGAB: I agree that UF’s opponent in the Sugar Bowl is a joke which is why tickets are not selling in G’ville. I am equally disappointed that UGA is not in a BCS Bowl. I would have liked for UF to play Oklahoma in the Sugar, and it would have been great to watch UGA clobber FSU.
ND continues to be coddled as they set themselves above being in a conference. Hopefully Bama beats them, but if ND wins the jackass sports writers up North will be intolerable. All the best to you and Your DAWGS.

Nebraska has a good record with just a couple of losses. Does anyone think Nebraska is going to lay down to Uga. I do not see Uga scoring 70 points. Nebraska knows Uga can not stuff the run. Nebraska has always had big home grown OL. Our D could be in trouble. I said it before the NC game. Uga can not stop the run. Alabama was going to run all over the Ga’s D. It was just facts and stats. It sounds like we are not getting up for this game. How many years has it been since Uga has won a bowl game? We had 2 easy schedule yrs and game accomplished nothing. Please be ready to play Nebraska. Stop wasting millions of dollars on conditioning if your not going to use it.

Bobo has to step it up and start scoring in these big games too.
Bobo’s offense got shutout vs. South Carolina, and stuerggled to score on Bama on last 2 possessions.
Grantham’s d is only 4 points worse than Bama’s against ranekd teams in scoring defense, but Bobo’s offense is 12 points worse than Bama’s offense in scoring offense against ranekd teams.
So, Bobo was more of the blame for the South Carolina loss, but Grantham gets the blame for the Alabama loss.
And Grantham gets the credit for the Florida win.

Nebraska is going to run all over our non tacklin D. Let’s just hope our offense can keep the pace. Nebraska is going to stack the box expecting Uga to run. Hope the big play will be there. I’ll save my money and watch the game on TV. CMR is known for giving to much time off on big breaks like this. I see our D getting tired quick. Holiday hangover!!!!!! Uga needs a bowl win. If the dawgs can not beat Nebraska, them how did we ever expect to beat Notre Dame in the NC.

Online athens has an article head line about Garner going to Auburn. This is great news!!!! CMR is not commenting about it. We have been due for a new DL coach. I just pray CMR hires a good one. Do not hire a DL coach without any experience. We still need a special teams coach!!!!!!!!11

In recruiting, UGA is still doing a poor job offering top talent at each position. If Saban is offering a player, UGA should also be offering and pursuing that player. They are bringing in a good class when it comes to quantity but, still not pursuing the quality. Bringing in a lot of DBs, but the talent level seems to be subpar and also the DL. UGA has to do a better job with the quality of the players that they bring in. Also to stop the run, there has to be constant penetration into the offenses backfield. UGA’s D has to keep penetration into the backfield to disrupt the play and also need to do a better job in reconizing the screen pass and watching the RB out of the backfield and must jam the TE on the line of scrimmage.

How in the world can all you other Dawgfans feel so cotton pickin confident that Georgia will just show up and beat Nebraska. This Georgia team hasn’t been consistent enough or dominating enough to convince me that they are a sure thing; especially against a Nebraska team that was embarassed against Wisconsin. This is a proud program with just as much tradition as Georgia. I hope our team is really prepared for this game or it’s gonna be another long off season.

I as a husker fan know you guys have a considerably better team than neb, but to think that nebraska is going to lay down and be a whipping post for you guys is ridiculous. Nebraska will come to play. I look for a well fought game to the fourth quater between to good programs. Good luck to you all and I hope for a husker win.

Wow you guys praising nebraskas pass defense and rush yards per game have me shaking in my biots. Wow they did that against ranked teams. Which ones again. Iowa, michigan, purdue. Oh that awesome B1G cinference that hasino respect from any conference this year. I mean a 7-5 team that killed nebraska is playing in the rose bowl. They lost 63-38 to tOSU, beat iowa 13-7 with their massive rushing attack. They beat that defensive juggernaut michigan 23-9 who bama slaughtered. If wisconsin that had no QB put 70 points on the huskers defense im not that worried. We have gurley and marshall and Boo and fwo of those backs put up amazing numbers in the SEC, not the ACC or B1G. So with our running game and us hsving ine of the best QB’s in the nation who has a hell of a completion percentage even after playing bama I think those black shirts will be yellow bellied by half time. I mean nebraska doesnt have a stellar O line and if bamas center had trouble with our NT this poor guy will. I mean they barely beat the 4-8 Iowa hawkeyes. But hey what do I know. I have a feeling we will wesr down their O line and D line in the 3rd quarter because our big guys are hard to keep blocking. They wont be able to pass on us if bama had trouble doing it they will too. As david pollack said of martizez on CFB daily a while back, he throws like a girl and will feel like on afger he takes off running and runs into the “tree.”

Here would be awesome bcs games
Orange FSU/UGA orFSU/NEB
Sugar UF/OU or UGA/OU or LSU/OU least fave lsu ou
Fiesta oregon/k state I like this one
Rose stanford/UGA or stanford /UF D game!! Or stan LSU
Any of these alternates would be great to see. Honestly Notre Dame has no offense and their D let Pitt run all over them. An under .500 team was 6 inches away from knocking them out. I also think stanford scored a TD vs them but NBC covers the game and they have their own independent refs there lol. I think bama and stanford or oregon would be better. Hell even a UGA bama rematch would probabky have ratings through the roof since the while country said that was the best SEC champ game of all time, even non SEC and football fans screamed that one loudly. Then have clemson, SC, and T A&M, UCLA and oregon st thrown in on the new years day bowl games and bam you have good footbakk games with good attendance and ratings. Instead some rich idiots pick this and dont have a clue whst the people want. If bama and UGA game was so highly rated and that good wouldnt you want both teams in the BCS. If only UF would have lost to UL lafayette or whoever it was they should have creamed we would have better bowl games. Who wants ro watch a UF team whi almost lost to an FCS school and had 3 boring close games in a row play a team from the big least conference that nobody cares about or wont be around in 5 years. Really rich folks.

GA needs to watch out for Rex Burkhead. He was one of the top RBs in the country last year but was sidelined most of this year with an MCL injury. Taylor Martinez will surprise the GA players with his speed. He will be one of the fastest guys on the field. NE’s D has been awful at times, most notably the Big 10 championship. GA should be able to run the ball (and pass the ball). GA fans, don’t take NE lightly, they can beat GA if the Dawgs are not focused.
