ATHENS – If Quinton Dial is going to receive any discipline for his illegal hit on Aaron Murray in the SEC Championship game, it’s not going to come from the SEC office.
That was the word Friday as the SEC sent out a short news release stating that it had reviewed several plays from the Dec. 1 matchup between Georgia and Alabama and that it would be leaving punishments decisions to the respective schools. In addition to Dial’s hit on Murray at the end of a first-half interception, Georgia’s Sheldon Dawson appears on video to be trying to gouge the eyes of Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner at the end of a kickoff return. Also, Bulldogs’ linebacker Alec Ogletree was flagged during the game for a “targeting” hit on Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.
“The Southeastern Conference has completed its review of video from the 2012 SEC Football Championship Game. Several plays involving both teams were reviewed. After review, all subsequent action will be handled internally by the two institutions and the conference office is satisfied with their actions.”
Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity declined comment but said he would include a statement when the school sends out its own news release later today.
SEC coordinator of officials Steve Shaw told a Birmingham radio station earlier today that both schools took disciplinary action. He told a Birmingham newspaper on Dec. 3 that officials missed calling Dial for a personal foul during the game. Shaw hasn’t returned messages seeking comment from the AJC.
The 304-pound Dial led with his head and left his feet to hit Murray, who was out of the play, in the helmet and shoulder pads after Murray threw an interception in the second quarter of Alabama’s 32-28 win.

We now know who runs the SEC — Saban and Bama. I heard there was a Bama person running the board — must have been true. The precedent was set earlier in the season with the suspension of the two other SEC players..If I were those two players — I would file suit right now. This is the last straw — putting winning the BCS ahead of player safety. I hope karma deals with Dial. After this, I’ll be pulling for ND.

Murray should pay more attention, and not throw the pick in the first place…and Dial shouldn’t be punished.
It appears he led with his shoulder, Murray was heading towards the runner, ball was still in play, and I didn’t hear Murray complain anyway.
It’s called football, not foozeball, and it ain’t supposed to be touch! Play on!
It was a great game and it is too bad we came up short. Great to have the extra practice and hope we use it wisely.

The SEC (And all it’s members except Vandy) don’t want a Bama player suspended. You dogs want to take your whippings and ride our coattails (and the coattails of Florida, LSU and even Auburn) by pretending that playing in the same conference as us, means you’re in the same league as us.
When Ga Tech is the 3rd best team on your regular season schedule you should move to the Ohio Valley Conference.

Chip, Please get the details on who this final decision came down to (names and backgrounds of board members). We would like to see where the corruption in the SEC is coming from. Never before have I seen a more clear case of a player deliberately trying to take our star QB out of the game by injuring him. Dial targeted the head and left his feet. It’s called cheating folks and now it’s being condoned by the league office. I have a friend who lives in California with no ties to the SEC and he is appalled by the whole incident. I’m so disgusted right now I could throw up. I guess it’s open season in the SEC next year. Dawgs, if the league isn’t going to protect your playmakers — then you had better. Yep, I did watch the tape, numerous times, as I am sure my team mate “Pat Dye” did, although I believe that is an AKA, or alias.
I am not only a UGA alum, but have 3 football letters to prove my affilliation, and trust me, I don’t miss any games and few plays.
There is a great difference between reality and perception where football is concerned, and the tube with slo-mo and the ability to isolate can create a lot of opinion and comment…especially by both broadcast commentators and the internet media.
If you run the shot at full speed, it’s my opinion that there was a player between the ref and Murray when the action occured, but again -as both a player and coach- I do not think the actual hit was illegal…however, that is just my opinion based on what I perceive to be the reality.
Now what Fairly did in the AU game a few years back, going for the knees AFTER the play was over is what I consider cause for immediate ejection.
Still, all in your point of view, I imagine.

Dial was heading towards the action then turned and headed directly towards Murray. The crown of his helmet his Murray in the earhole on his helmet. It was clearly a “Targetting Hit.” Much more so than Ogletree’s hit on McCarron. At least McCarron was actually in possession of the ball a split sectond before he got hit. Doesn’t really matter! Didn’t have an impact on the outcome of the game. It had nothing to do with Murray’s wounded duck pass that was intercepted. That was the biggest play of the game! A 10-point swing in Alabama’s favor. The Georgia receiver was wide open 10 yards behind he defense. Not sure why Murray missed him so badly. I hope Alabama kills ND. Go Dawgs!

DP — the late hits by the Dawgs have been nothing compared to the ones they’ve been on the receiving end of. I’m appallled because this was the year that the league was supposed to take action — and they did earlier with two deserved suspensions. Now, just because Bama is in the NCG they’re going to give a pass? Whatever happened to fairness and integrity? Face it, you just can’t deal with the negative press Bama is getting — and deservedly so. The full scale of NCAA, SEC, ESPN, etc., manipulation will be witnessed when the network doesn’t even mention it in the pre-game shows. Have you ever noticed when people don’t know how to address someone who is stating facts that they can’t rebuke they always say “get a life”. Deal with it for what it is — blatant hypocrisy.

You have to wonder why the official who was looking directly at the play where Dial hit Murray did not call a penalty on Dial, This was a hit that appeared to be intended to take Murray out of the game, The only reason I can see that a penalty was not called is that the Official had an interest in seeing Bama win, I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see any other reason for not calling a penalty on Dial.

I agree with the people that say it is part of football. It was also a VERY cheap shot. It was a classless display from a classless led team. The penalty the AL QB called on his own when he was hit in his face mask was ridiculous. Any one who says this Dial clown didn’t lead with his head is either blind or a plain moron.
As I said, I think its just part of the game, fire the ref, no suspension deserved. HOWEVER, if you compare the hits that previously got SEC players suspended earlier in the year you will see that they were certainly not as cheap or dangerous as this one. I guess that’s what really ticks me off. He got preferential treatment because it is AL and the next game is the NC. Shouldn’t have been suspended based on the previous suspensions earlier in the year.

Here we go again! The SEC decided to let Nick Fairley do anything he wanted and they just let him get away with it. They didn’t call anything on Fairley either, until the game was decided. Then they went out of their way to protect the Alabama QB in the Iron Bowl, by giving NickFairley a fanton penalty for just standing on the field.
Now the SEC has suprized nobody by deciding that Alabama’s Dial also has the right to try and take Ga’s QB out of the game with the seasons most illegal hit.
Yes, we get the very loud and clear message. It’s open season on UGA’s Aaron Murray.
Go ahead, take you’re best shot, you have nothing to lose.
First they let Alabama hit our receivers early the whole game and they let their O-line hold and block in the back the whole game, not to mention the non call of the hit on Murray, and then this?
It’s about time UGA fan’s start asking, what does the SEC have against Georgia.
There is a consistent pattern developing here.

UGA proved they were just as good, if not better than Alabama in that game…Bama knows they “escaped” with a win…you would have to be blind (Alabama blind also counts) not to see that the hit on Murray WAS helmet to helmet and intended to inflict harm, not tackle or stop Murray…he had already thrown the ball and taken 3-4 steps in a slowing manner watching the flight of the football he had just thrown…he was as vulnerable as any WR after catching a ball and turning up field. Maybe the ref was blocked by another player, that happens. But reviewing it as the SEC was able to do and NOT doing something about it, that reeks of favoritism from the Alabama based offices…maybe we should relocate them to Vanderbilt, an institution of higher learning.

This is football and if you want pansy ball, go somewhere else. That was one hell of a football game. No matter who won, they all left it all on the field. A 15 yard penalty would not have helped you one bit on that play. We intercepted the pass, it was our ball and we would have started 15 yards back. That just means we would have put up 365 yards rushing instead of 350. That is Three Hundred Fifty yards rushing! Get over it. Move on. I realize that was your best chance in the last 30 years to make it to the NC and probably for the next 30. I wish Dial would have been penalized, ejected and left behind. We still win and you lost.

Dirty cheap shot any way you look at it and if it had been called there may have been a different outcome in the game as Bama went on to get a field goal instead of being backed up to their 34 yard line.

The SEC also opted against punishing Georgia cornerback Sheldon Dawson, who had been accused of trying to eye gouge Alabama’s Dee Milliner while players from both teams attempted to recover a fumbled kickoff early in the fourth quarter. Have you seen the film? And, even though the helmet to helmet by GA against the Alabama qb was flagged, if Dial had been suspended, shouldn’t the GA player be as well? Do we really expect the SEC to suspend 3 players? Oh wait, just the Alabama player, the GA players were pure as the driven snow.

Player Safety, replay officials should have the discretion to call personal fouls on obvious situations that show up on replays. They should also have the ability to throw a player like Dial out of the game.
This would protect the players more than anything else that the SEC or NCAA or NFL could do.

I’ve said this before, it was the best game I’ve ever seen in person. The Dial hit was crap. Should have been penalized. Dawson, should have been penalized.
There was no special treatment from the SEC. Was it a missed call? Yes. Did it change the outcome of the game, maybe and maybe not.
UGA had a great year. Alabama had a great year. 2013 is right after the bowl games! Let’s line it up and get after it! I love college football. I hate the garbage talked between the fans, though. GO DAWGS. ‘Bama, beat the Fightin’ Irish…should be a cakewalk after the SECCG!!

Dial should be punished and so should Ogletree for punching the Bama player in the eye. How did the looney referees miss both calls? This was indeed a poorly refereed game! The Bama O line was guilty of flagrant holding throughout the game and not called. Perhaps the SEC office in Birmingham explains the favoritism for Bama.
Bama deserved to win this game, not taking away anything from them. UGA had their chance but it all came down to the DAWGS defense dimply being worn out at the end. Frankly, I put this one on Grantham and the no spike of the ball on the last play on Richt. Murray motioned for a spike and Richt said to play on. Well, he did play on for the results that happened and a waste of precious seconds that may have been used for at least one more play.
Hindsight is always better than foresight and as I see it, simply regroup and know you can do it next time. You now know what it takes….came a lot closer than the previous year vs. LSU. GO DAWGS!!

The SEC Office is a JOKE! They have all the evidence on film and NO ACTION?
I’m sure that the game coming in January had nothing to do with their decision. REALLY?
They can suspend players during conference play for similiar hits but NOT THIS ONE AGAINST BAMA?
I already see a UGA player intercept a pass next year and one of our players take out the QB, I’m sure swift and immediate action will come from the SEC office.
The SEC officials and need one swift kick in the seat of their britches.
BAMA won the game and a fifteen yard penalty would not have changed the outcome but this is bogus!
In fact there is nasty odor steaming from this NON ACTION!

If you watch the video, at the end of it, you can see a referee come up from the left side of the play, and he was looking directly at the hit.

Leave it to Mike Slive. He always looks the other way when there is chance for his own glory. Auburn is a perfect example a couple of years ago. Everyone except the Auburn faithful and Mike Slive knew Auburn was dirty but Mike Slive was not going to let anything stand in the way of his chance to shine as the leader of the top conference even if it meant sacrificing integrity. The official caught the hit on the Bama QB because he immediately got up pleading with the ref for a flag. If Dial receives any punishment from Saban you can expect it to be similar to the Ohio State player punishment prior to the Arkansas Sugar Bowl. Bama will suspend him for one quarter of a game next year probably some FCS team. I hope that CMR will suspend his player if he is in fact guilty of dirty play. Not playing in the bowl game would be a good lesson for such play.

Let me first start by saying LogicalUS is an idiot. Georgia’s padded schedule? Look at Alabama’s overall schedule. Did not play Florida, South Carolina, or Georgia until SEC Title Game. The SEC WEST was awful this year. Auburn, Miss St., Ole Miss, Arkansas. Out of conference included Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Western Carolina. Even Michigan was mediocre at best. So before you slam Georgia’s schedule, look at this weak ass load.
Second, the hit Ogletree made on A.J. was a lot less aggregious than the hit Dial put on Murray. If Dial had been in the NFL, he would have been fined over $50k and suspended. It was chicken-sh*t. The hit, the no call of even a penalty…all of it
But you cannot be objective. Hell, you probably cannot spell objective.
Real Problem

Marsellis Mutt, you are right….I have watched this play over and over again. Dial lead with his shoulder….was there helmet to helmet…..YES AND SHOULD have been a flag, no doubt. AND JUST WHERE DO WE POINT FINGERS WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO GOUGE OUT EYES.

This issue is like beating a dead horse, its not going to change a thing. Only a handful of Dawgs seem to even care. Most of us think it was a crappy call, but the refs usually miss calls in “every” game, this one was just on a bigger stage. We really do need more accountability from so-called “professional refs. I would watch game film on the ref that let Murrays hit slide because you will see he seemed biased. Refs must be neutral and consistant in calling a foul. Pass interference is a prime example of biased inconsistant calls. They let some obvious fouls slide and then call some questionable fouls. This happens in most games and needs to be addressed. Too much chance for abuse and bias…
Now move on…these articles are trying to make UGA fans look like they need an excuse for the loss. We don’t need an excuse, we gave up 30∅+ yards rushing. That’s the reason we lost.
Would the AJC/sports writers please move on to the Neb. Game??

SEC coordinator took the LOW road to protect the Alabama player in question for his obvious flagrant hit on Murray in the SEC championship game. He knows that Ala. is a money train and has a lot of say so in NCAA football. It is a know fact in the college officiating circuit, you mess with Alabama and Saban, you looking at a deciplinary notice from the SEC office. Saban bitches to the office more than all other coaches combined. Officials are told to do whatever it takes to keep him of their ass as much as possible.
You can blow me off all you want, but the fact is, I’m on the field at times; you really don’t know what we have to go through in a pre-game meeting and listen to the S___ that the crew chief has been told to tell us before an Alabama game.
Bottom line, where you want to believe it or not, officials have to turn their heads at much that goes on when Bama plays anybody, if you don’t, you will not be officiating anymore that year in that that conference; even more maybe never!
A known fact!

Are there any Dawg fans blogging that were proud that Georgia made it to the “Big Game”? Evidently not! All I’m reading is about Dial’s supposedly illegal hit on Murrary, Georgia’s last stand on the 5 yard line, how dirty Ala. is, how Saban doesn’t discipline, and how the SEC favors Ala. Looking real close at the video of Dial’s hit, it looks like his shoulder pads hit Murray’s shoulder first(evidently that’s what the SEC saw). If the player caught the ball on the 5 yard line and kept his footing he still wouldn’t have made it to the endzone. If Dial’s hit had drawn a penalty, you would not want to be in Dial’s shoes when he met Saban on the sideline. Saban doesn’t teach dirty he teaches discipline and losing 15 yards by penalty would not sit well with Saban. Give Richt, Murray, and the Bulldogs credit for playing their way into the game and having a chance to win with 10 seconds left. They did beat the number 3 team in the country and lost to the number 2 team(maybe the National Champions) Since I’m a fan of Georgia and Alabama it didn’t matter who won the chance to kick ND’s Butt.

Tom parish “got our tails handed to us.” Are you kidding me did you watch the game? It was a hard faught game between two good teams. It came down to the final seconds with less then 6 yards to go. If you can really sit there and say that you need clinical help. It was the best game played in college football so far this year. The dial hit was cheap. Did it effect the game? No. All an all im proud of what we accomplished. All any GA fan should be focused on right now is wiping the floor with Nebraska

the irish will destroy QD and Bama. The irish will not let a “cheap shot artist” get away with this Bama way of winning by destroying a player fron the blind side. So mr dial fasten your seat belts your fanny is about to have a bumpy ride. You need to hide and run away when the iRISH TURN THEIR BACK. I bet you do not know what any of your rivals face looks like, Mr. Cheap Shot.

I doubt seriously the irish will destroy bama. They are a good team. I have a feeling it will be the exact opposite. I dislike bama but love the sec. So considering that and the face that bama winning would make UGA look even better you have to pull for them in the NCG.

Typical SEC crap!! If the SEC commission doesn’t have the ball to suspend this THUG then the NCAA should. SEC is more concerned with winning the NC game than doing what is right. This is a reply of AU 2-yrs ago.
WHAT A JOKE THE SEC COMMISSION IS.

Still confused. Murray threw an intereception. Thus, Bama was on offense and UGA was on defense. Bama was running with the ball and Murray was in the vicinity of this. The Bama player blocked Murray. This is totally fair as I see it.

UGA = Yawn, Obviously you haven’t studied the replay. Dial changed direction and targeted Murray’s head so as to try and take him out of the game. Reports are coming from the Alabama campus that Dial is bragging and laughing about the hit. He would be singing a different tune (I would hope) if Murray was laying in a hospital room paralyzed from a broken neck. Nobody likes a dirty program that cheats. I’m praying for a ND upset to embarass the Tide nation or any other type of karma that might come Bama’s way in the future. Karma took a big swat at Auburn after all of Fairley’s and company dirty plays and cheap shots and it couldn’t have been more well deserved.
