No SEC suspension for Bama’s Quinton Dial for hit on Aaron Murray

ATHENS – If Quinton Dial is going to receive any discipline for his illegal hit on Aaron Murray in the SEC Championship game, it’s not going to come from the SEC office.

That was the word Friday as the SEC sent out a short news release stating that it had reviewed several plays from the Dec. 1 matchup between Georgia and Alabama and that it would be leaving punishments decisions to the respective schools. In addition to Dial’s hit on Murray at the end of a first-half interception, Georgia’s Sheldon Dawson appears on video to be trying to gouge the eyes of Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner at the end of a kickoff return. Also, Bulldogs’ linebacker Alec Ogletree was flagged during the game for a “targeting” hit on Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.

“The Southeastern Conference has completed its review of video from the 2012 SEC Football Championship Game. Several plays involving both teams were reviewed. After review, all subsequent action will be handled internally by the two institutions and the conference office is satisfied with their actions.”

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity declined comment but said he would include a statement when the school sends out its own news release later today.

SEC coordinator of officials Steve Shaw told a Birmingham radio station earlier today that both schools took disciplinary action. He told a Birmingham newspaper on Dec. 3 that officials missed calling Dial for a personal foul during the game. Shaw hasn’t returned messages seeking comment from the AJC.

The 304-pound Dial led with his head and left his feet to hit Murray, who was out of the play, in the helmet and shoulder pads after Murray threw an interception in the second quarter of Alabama’s 32-28 win.

If you watch the video, at the end of it, you can see a referee come up from the left side of the play, and he was looking directly at the hit.

Leave it to Mike Slive. He always looks the other way when there is chance for his own glory. Auburn is a perfect example a couple of years ago. Everyone except the Auburn faithful and Mike Slive knew Auburn was dirty but Mike Slive was not going to let anything stand in the way of his chance to shine as the leader of the top conference even if it meant sacrificing integrity. The official caught the hit on the Bama QB because he immediately got up pleading with the ref for a flag. If Dial receives any punishment from Saban you can expect it to be similar to the Ohio State player punishment prior to the Arkansas Sugar Bowl. Bama will suspend him for one quarter of a game next year probably some FCS team. I hope that CMR will suspend his player if he is in fact guilty of dirty play. Not playing in the bowl game would be a good lesson for such play.

Ogletree should of been suspended earlier in the game. He is a true head hunter.

Let me first start by saying LogicalUS is an idiot. Georgia’s padded schedule? Look at Alabama’s overall schedule. Did not play Florida, South Carolina, or Georgia until SEC Title Game. The SEC WEST was awful this year. Auburn, Miss St., Ole Miss, Arkansas. Out of conference included Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Western Carolina. Even Michigan was mediocre at best. So before you slam Georgia’s schedule, look at this weak ass load.

Second, the hit Ogletree made on A.J. was a lot less aggregious than the hit Dial put on Murray. If Dial had been in the NFL, he would have been fined over $50k and suspended. It was chicken-sh*t. The hit, the no call of even a penalty…all of it

But you cannot be objective. Hell, you probably cannot spell objective.

Marsellis Mutt, you are right….I have watched this play over and over again. Dial lead with his shoulder….was there helmet to helmet…..YES AND SHOULD have been a flag, no doubt. Dial was making a football play….first thing he did after contact was look where his DB that made the INT was. Hardly gloating on flattening our QB….. AND JUST WHERE DO WE POINT FINGERS WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO GOUGE OUT EYES.

Dial’s cheap shot on Aaron Murray was the most flagrant one of the season. And right in front of the referee– who did nothing. it was a game changer. Should have been a 15-yard penalty. No gold stars for Referee Tom Ritter’s crew on this play.

Who cares if nothing is done now– the game was two weeks ago!

I think most teams all target the QB and sometimes the running backs and the wide receivers too. Who would try to take the other teams best players out of the game with a hit? That is just one glaring example of how the refs tilted the game in Bama’s favor. It’s obvious to anyone that these refs are in the pocket of the mass media and at the direction of the SEC commissioner. It’s all about the money, period. This corruption is reaching Don King proportions.

This issue is like beating a dead horse, its not going to change a thing. Only a handful of Dawgs seem to even care. Most of us think it was a crappy call, but the refs usually miss calls in “every” game, this one was just on a bigger stage. We really do need more accountability from so-called “professional refs. I would watch game film on the ref that let Murrays hit slide because you will see he seemed biased. Refs must be neutral and consistant in calling a foul. Pass interference is a prime example of biased inconsistant calls. They let some obvious fouls slide and then call some questionable fouls. This happens in most games and needs to be addressed. Too much chance for abuse and bias…
Now move on…these articles are trying to make UGA fans look like they need an excuse for the loss. We don’t need an excuse, we gave up 30∅+ yards rushing. That’s the reason we lost.
Would the AJC/sports writers please move on to the Neb. Game??

NCAA Official

SEC coordinator took the LOW road to protect the Alabama player in question for his obvious flagrant hit on Murray in the SEC championship game. He knows that Ala. is a money train and has a lot of say so in NCAA football. It is a know fact in the college officiating circuit, you mess with Alabama and Saban, you looking at a deciplinary notice from the SEC office. Saban bitches to the office more than all other coaches combined. Officials are told to do whatever it takes to keep him of their ass as much as possible.
You can blow me off all you want, but the fact is, I’m on the field at times; you really don’t know what we have to go through in a pre-game meeting and listen to the S___ that the crew chief has been told to tell us before an Alabama game.
Bottom line, where you want to believe it or not, officials have to turn their heads at much that goes on when Bama plays anybody, if you don’t, you will not be officiating anymore that year in that that conference; even more maybe never!
A known fact!
