No SEC suspension for Bama’s Quinton Dial for hit on Aaron Murray

ATHENS – If Quinton Dial is going to receive any discipline for his illegal hit on Aaron Murray in the SEC Championship game, it’s not going to come from the SEC office.

That was the word Friday as the SEC sent out a short news release stating that it had reviewed several plays from the Dec. 1 matchup between Georgia and Alabama and that it would be leaving punishments decisions to the respective schools. In addition to Dial’s hit on Murray at the end of a first-half interception, Georgia’s Sheldon Dawson appears on video to be trying to gouge the eyes of Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner at the end of a kickoff return. Also, Bulldogs’ linebacker Alec Ogletree was flagged during the game for a “targeting” hit on Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.

“The Southeastern Conference has completed its review of video from the 2012 SEC Football Championship Game. Several plays involving both teams were reviewed. After review, all subsequent action will be handled internally by the two institutions and the conference office is satisfied with their actions.”

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity declined comment but said he would include a statement when the school sends out its own news release later today.

SEC coordinator of officials Steve Shaw told a Birmingham radio station earlier today that both schools took disciplinary action. He told a Birmingham newspaper on Dec. 3 that officials missed calling Dial for a personal foul during the game. Shaw hasn’t returned messages seeking comment from the AJC.

The 304-pound Dial led with his head and left his feet to hit Murray, who was out of the play, in the helmet and shoulder pads after Murray threw an interception in the second quarter of Alabama’s 32-28 win.

The refs always are on Georgia’s side, so finally they are on the side of the other team. I would have had to move out of the state if Georgia had won, because I can’t handle Georgia winning. I drank like crazy after the Florida game.

I whined all year about Georgia’s schedule and now because Alabama squeaked out the win against Georgia and played Bama better than almost anyone thought, I can get on here and make a JA of myself to Georgia fans. Oh boy, I am just obsessed with Georgia because my team sucks!!

If the Dial hit on Murray had been treated like the Georgia eye gouge of Milliner, Georgia would have been penalized 15 yards.

As physical of a game as that was there was no way anything was going to happen unless Murray had been hurt.

Of course they’re not going to punish him. I never thought they would. I call this the Cam rule. Also known as the Terrell Pyror rule. Basiclly, if your a star player on a team in the big game, you’d have to murder someone to get suspended.

But honestly I’m not that worried about the Bama linemen not getting suspended. The only thing wrong he did was lead with his helmet. And meh… that’s football.

[...] also declined comment about the SEC’s decision to not suspend Alabama defensive lineman Quinton Dial for his illegal hit on quarterback Aaron Murray. Richt addressed the situations at the end of the Bulldogs’ practice Friday [...]

The fact that Alabama has two oe three linemen holding every play and never gets flagged should have let everyone know that Dial would not get suspended. Bama gets the calls, and the non-calls more often than not. It is what it is, why is anyone surprised. Slive and Shaw have protected their beloved Tide once again! Go Irish!

I am a Georgia fan but I lost any respect for the SEC and The University of Alabama . I can see the Ala fans getting a big thrill and laughing about Mr.Cheap Shot Quantin Dial. Mr. Dial was trying to take Murry out of the Game.I can also vision the SEC not wanting to upset Mr.Saban. Mr Dial could be acting under instructions to do so. So sports fans we see deliberate actions from Ala.
I wounder what will happen to ND in the big game will Mr. Cheap Shot show up again.

Actually that official should be fired and the rest of that crew should be suspended for calling such a lopsided game. As for suspending the player I agree he should only be punished by the University but if Saban doesn’t dish out fair and adequate punishment then we will know huh. I hope Alabama cremes Norte Dame but IMHO it should be Georgia playing in the National Championship game not Alabama as the Officials were mis-spotting the ball the entire game ahead for Bama and back on Georgia. They called every tacky penalty on Georgia but only called 2 against Alabama. I counted at least 10 holds that should have been called.

ND will take care of Mr. Dial. Mr Dial needs to install rear view mirrors on his helmet. I challenge you to try to take a ND player out. The SEC can’t protect you.

Now excuse me, while I hit up other internet boards and whine about how much I hate Georgia to the world. I’m going to go suck my thumb and scream how it’s not fair Georgia didn’t play LSU and how the SEC office purposely did this to get Georgia into the game.

Murray should have hit him——–Richts teams have always been softer ususally———–I am a UGA fan but ——-maybe that hit will get rid of some of that snot nose———-Murray needs to man up and start running the ball like a man not like a stick legged chicken running for cover from a hawk. Come on —————————————UGA is just not as physical as it used to be and we all know that——that got run over in that game. Talk about that for a while——why did UGAs defense keep trying to tackle Lacy up top—–and letting him get 10 yards a carry at least—–If you are not mean ———you are not going to cut it in the SEC—period.

UGA proved they were just as good, if not better than Alabama in that game…Bama knows they “escaped” with a win…you would have to be blind (Alabama blind also counts) not to see that the hit on Murray WAS helmet to helmet and intended to inflict harm, not tackle or stop Murray…he had already thrown the ball and taken 3-4 steps in a slowing manner watching the flight of the football he had just thrown…he was as vulnerable as any WR after catching a ball and turning up field. Maybe the ref was blocked by another player, that happens. But reviewing it as the SEC was able to do and NOT doing something about it, that reeks of favoritism from the Alabama based offices…maybe we should relocate them to Vanderbilt, an institution of higher learning.

Quit whining! You lost. Period. I am an Alabama fan. Not posing as anything other. I guarantee not one of you would be man enough to get on that field against either of those teams. This is football and if you want pansy ball, go somewhere else. That was one hell of a football game. No matter who won, they all left it all on the field. A 15 yard penalty would not have helped you one bit on that play. We intercepted the pass, it was our ball and we would have started 15 yards back. That just means we would have put up 365 yards rushing instead of 350. That is Three Hundred Fifty yards rushing! Get over it. Move on. I realize that was your best chance in the last 30 years to make it to the NC and probably for the next 30. I wish Dial would have been penalized, ejected and left behind. We still win and you lost.

Dirty cheap shot any way you look at it and if it had been called there may have been a different outcome in the game as Bama went on to get a field goal instead of being backed up to their 34 yard line.

The SEC also opted against punishing Georgia cornerback Sheldon Dawson, who had been accused of trying to eye gouge Alabama’s Dee Milliner while players from both teams attempted to recover a fumbled kickoff early in the fourth quarter. Have you seen the film? And, even though the helmet to helmet by GA against the Alabama qb was flagged, if Dial had been suspended, shouldn’t the GA player be as well? Do we really expect the SEC to suspend 3 players? Oh wait, just the Alabama player, the GA players were pure as the driven snow.

Player Safety, replay officials should have the discretion to call personal fouls on obvious situations that show up on replays. They should also have the ability to throw a player like Dial out of the game.

This would protect the players more than anything else that the SEC or NCAA or NFL could do.

I’ve said this before, it was the best game I’ve ever seen in person. The Dial hit was crap. Should have been penalized. Dawson, should have been penalized.
There was no special treatment from the SEC. Was it a missed call? Yes. Did it change the outcome of the game, maybe and maybe not.

Dial should be punished and so should Ogletree for punching the Bama player in the eye. How did the looney referees miss both calls? This was indeed a poorly refereed game! The Bama O line was guilty of flagrant holding throughout the game and not called. Perhaps the SEC office in Birmingham explains the favoritism for Bama.

Bama deserved to win this game, not taking away anything from them. UGA had their chance but it all came down to the DAWGS defense dimply being worn out at the end. Frankly, I put this one on Grantham and the no spike of the ball on the last play on Richt. Murray motioned for a spike and Richt said to play on. Well, he did play on for the results that happened and a waste of precious seconds that may have been used for at least one more play.

Hindsight is always better than foresight and as I see it, simply regroup and know you can do it next time. You now know what it takes….came a lot closer than the previous year vs. LSU. GO DAWGS!!

The SEC Office is a JOKE! They have all the evidence on film and NO ACTION?

I’m sure that the game coming in January had nothing to do with their decision. REALLY?

They can suspend players during conference play for similiar hits but NOT THIS ONE AGAINST BAMA?

I already see a UGA player intercept a pass next year and one of our players take out the QB, I’m sure swift and immediate action will come from the SEC office.

The SEC officials and need one swift kick in the seat of their britches.

BAMA won the game and a fifteen yard penalty would not have changed the outcome but this is bogus!

In fact there is nasty odor steaming from this NON ACTION!
