No missed playing time for Georgia players’ actions in SEC Championship game

ATHENS — Georgia coach Mark Richt said he has disciplined freshman cornerback Sheldon Dawson for an incident in the SEC Championship game in which it appears Dawson tried to poke the eyes of Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner. But he said Dawson won’t miss any playing time and no other UGA players are being punished for their actions in that game.

Richt also declined comment about the SEC’s decision to not suspend Alabama defensive lineman Quinton Dial for his illegal hit on quarterback Aaron Murray. Richt addressed the situations at the end of the Bulldogs’ practice Friday afternoon.

“Dawson, I did (discipline), yes,” Richt said. “I’m not going to give detail of it. But, yeah, and Dawson saw it. He realizes it was a bad thing and a bad image for him and for Georgia. He understood why I needed to discipline him. It won’t be any playing time.”

Video shows Dawson sticking his fingers in Milliner’s facemask after a scrum for a loose ball following an Alabama kickoff return early in the fourth quarter. Milliner was actually flagged for unsportsmanlike contact when he responded by shoving Dawson.

Dawson claimed after Thursday’s practice he wasn’t trying to “gouge” Milliner’s eyes but said he apologized to Milliner on the field later in the game.

“We talked about it a couple of series later,” said Dawson, a 5-11, 181-pound freshman from Memphis. “I just went to point and my hand just went straight through his facemask. I heard people say stuff about eye-gouging and all that. I wasn’t trying to grab his eyes or something like that. It was just a mistake.”

“To me it looked very bad,” Richt said. “It’s just not Georgia. And I think when he saw it, he said, ‘Coach, I saw it and I don’t blame you.’ He didn’t even make an excuse. He just said ‘I’m sorry.’”

Georgia junior linebacker Alec Ogletree was flagged for hitting Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron high on a second-quarter play. But Richt indicated the SEC did not bring up that situation and that there was nothing malicious about it.

“I think he was just playing hard,” Richt said. “I don’t think he was trying to hurt anybody. He got penalized and the team got penalized for what happened. I think that was appropriate.”

While Murray was technically a defender on the play he was hit, Dial appears to be targeting Murray’s head on the play. Protecting players from intentional helmet-to-helmet contact has been a point of emphasis in the SEC this year.

“There’s a helmet-to-helmet hit almost every play,” Richt said. “How many times does a running back run the ball and he drives forward and here comes a tackler and they hit? I don’t want to get into that right now, but I think everybody’s trying to do what’s right by the rules.”

Until an Alabama player decides to do it to Aaron Murray? Funny how the SEC Officials just watched Nick Fairley do the same thing?

Anybody else seeing a pattern here?

The SEC Officials are Bias against UGA. Somethings got to be done to correct this.

“I just went to point and my hand just went straight through his facemask.”

Dawson is a liar. Look at the video. He says he was just pointing and he not only stuck his finger in Milliner’s face, once it was in there he pushed even harder.

And of course, master disciplinarian Mark Richt notes of Dawson’s punishment:

“It won’t be any playing time.”

Yet Jeff Schultz and much of Dawg Nation are whining that Dial wasn’t suspended for the BCS national championship game.

@Joey, The SEC has made deliberate helmet to helmet hits illegal. They even suspended two players for doing it in 2012. A SEC Official watched Alabama’s Dial do it and does nothing?

And then the SEC tells Saban that his player got away with it, just like they did with Nick Fairley, and you don’t see it?

Who do you pull for. SC?

The fact is… Right, wrong, cheap hit, legal, ilegal, suspended not suspended… Its not changing the scoreboard from an outstanding ballgame December 1st… The topic is a serious one because Aaron Murray couldve been seriously injured. The league got it wrong because apparently Nick Saban is Lord and Saviour of college football. Moving on….. GO DAWGS!!

No, I don’t believe that theSEC has a bias against UGA. Uga is one of the top 3 money makers in the NCAA every single year. Why would the SEC single us out for anything? That’s is just so stupid.

I guess that’s progress Chip, you’ve gone from the lie that Murray was out of the play in your previous blog to “Murray was technically a defender on the play he was hit”. Now please correct the continuing lie about Dial targeting Murray’s head, because if a guy as big as Dial with a full head of steam had targeted Murray’s head he wouldn’t have been able to come back in the game.

DP — things must be real interesting around your house. You have an excuse for everything. Now your using deflection as a defensive tactic. I dare you to say “Dial should have been penalized for the hit”, especially in light of the one Olgetree was called for. But I’m sure you won’t do it, because there has never been a Bama player in the history of the game who played dirty or took a cheap shot — right? You need to stop defending the indefensible.

AFDawg, I wrote previously that Dial should have gotten a 15 yard penalty for the hit on Murray because of the helmet to helmet contact even though Dial led with his shoulder and the primary contact was below Murray’s helmet. But it didn’t rise to the level of a one game suspension. Take a look at the videos of what the Arkansas and South Carolina players drew one game suspensions for, blasting a defenseless punt returner (before he could even field the punt) and a defenseless receiver, then strutting around and celebrating.

Now let’s see you say Richt should suspend Dawson for his intentional eye gouge of Milliner for at least the first half of the bowl game, as Urban Meyer did to Spikes after he gouged a Georgia player. Or how Richt should have made Alec Ogeltree send letters of apology to Paul Johnson and the Georgia Tech player he body slammed as Saban made LaMichael Fanning do for a similar goon play against Missouri. And Saban didn’t let Fanning make the trip to the next game at Tennessee, while Ogeltree was playing from the first snap against Alabama.

Dp I think your buddies over there must have been Double Penetrating your head. You’d be a moron to look at the tape and see an eye gouge. Of course you being from Alabama makes you one anyway, but I digress. The cheap shot that the Neanderthal hit Murray with was just that, a cheap shot. I don’t see a suspension in it………..until I look at the other tapes you claim to keep trying to put up, but obviously don’t have the brain power to do. (From Alabama, who’d a thunk it?) You can claim he lead with his shoulder all you want. The rule is a blow to the head, not JUST helmet to helmet. He targeted the head, period. It’s big boy football and they play rough. The thing that ticks me off is that this blow was every bit as dangerous and uncalled for as the ones that were suspended earlier in the year. You tried to make it sound like they were suspended for “Strutting around.” They don’t suspend people for strutting around, they suspended them for the dangerous hits to the head. Alabama got preferential treatment from the SEC because they were Alabama and they are playing for a championship. Period. The end. That’s a separate issue from whether the lick was actionable, legal, cheap, what ever. Alabama got preferential treatment and there is no denying that.

I was on an airplane going to Denver from Atlanta one night and I began talking to the guy next to me. In the conversation he revealed that he was a graduate of the University of Alabama. After about an hour the pilot came over the loud speaker and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your pilot speaking. I want to alert you that the engine under the right wing went out, but we have two more, one under the left wing and one on the rear of the fuselage. It will be more than enough to safely carry us to Denver, however, we will be an hour late. The guy next to me says ” I hope I don’t miss my connections.”

About 45 mins later the pilot came back on the plane and said, “Ladies and gentlemen this is your pilot again, I want to alert you that we have lost the engine under the left wing. But the remaining engine will be plenty to carry us on to Denver. However, we will be landing 2 hours later than originally scheduled.” The guy from Alabama looks at me and says ” GEEZ!!!! If that other engine goes out we will be up here ALL NIGHT!”

This is about as dumb of a group of post that I’ve seen on any sports blog.

They are leaving it up to the schools.

And you’ll notice there were no complaints from Georgia.

Great legal block Dial. You lead with your forearm & shoulder. The only helmet to helmet contact was because the force of the blow caused Murray’s head to snap forward into Dial’s helmet. Murray is lucky he was not running or he really would have been hurt. These reporters never played football & would not recognize a good block if it smacked them in the mouth.

The SEC letting Bammer get away with cheat shotting Aaron Murray. Bammer is just dirty and refs probably told to make Bammer win. That Saban will get what coming to him. We need set league office straight that Dawgs deserve to win and quit rigging for Bammer. We got more class than Bammer and that why Bammer had to do cheating to win with refs helping. Sheldon Dawson is a liar. The video clearly shows him intentionally trying to gouge Milliner’s eye. And the irony of the play is that Milliner is the one who got a 15 yard penalty for shoving him back.

Lets see now. We have Dawson’s dirty play then we have Ogletree’s dirty hit. 2 nasty unsportsmanlike penalties against the dawgs and one againt Bama. I wonder what the kool aide drinking dawg fans are going to say to excuse this play. And doesn’t Georgia annually lead the sec in unsportsmanlike penalties. This is one dirty football program.

@ Tide Rising:

If you are at all serious about UGA being a “dirty program” perhaps you should be grateful because without some of those long penalties the game likely would have had a different winner.

It is kinda pitiful that the majority of Bama and GT trolls sought to make light of a vicious, illegal hit that could have been carrer ending for Murray. I don’t believe I have seen ONE bama poster saying it was blatant and should at the very least been flagged. It was intentional and Ogletree got flagged for a much weaker version of Dial’s hit on Murray. Had a penalty been called the uproar would have been MUCH less from the media and UGA. An official, 10 ft. away, looking directly at the hit should be fined and suspended.

Brainiac, I am an Alabama fan who posted that Dial’s block should have been flagged because even though he led with the shoulder he made helmet to helmet contact. But I think it’s absurd to say he should be suspended for it. I don’t know what you’re talking about with “blatant”. The play was still going on, Murray was sleepwalking toward the ballcarrier after throwing the pick. If you’re 200 pounds and wandering across the field with your mind somewhere else during a live play you can expect to get blown up. That is not a defenseless player like a receiver who jumps for a ball or a punt returner who is waiting to field the punt or a QB who has just released a pass. Murray looked defenseless because he was wandering aimlessly across the field, but he was in position to defend himself had he been paying attention.

You can’t tell me any player on Georgia’s defense wouldn’t have done exactly the same thing were the situation reversed.

Dial has no history of personal fouls, body slams, late hits, etc. He is not a Nick Fairley.

“How many attempted eye gouges have you ever witnessed that were successful???”

Brainiac, did you have the same mild reaction to Brandon Spikes trying to eye gouge a Georgia player a couple of years ago? Are you saying that since it’s difficult to get to the eyes that making an attempt is no big deal? It wasn’t for lack of trying on Dawson’s part. After he put his finger in there you can see him shove it in as deep as he could get it.

There was such an outcry over Spikes that Urban Meyer suspended him for the first half of the next game and that drew even more outrage, so Spikes made the suspension for the entire game. Mark Richt has already said Dawson’s punishment won’t include any loss of playing time and Dawg Nation which was outraged over Spikes is OK with that.
