Disappointed Dogs insist there will be no letdown against Nebraska

ATHENS -- There are few things more unpredictable than the emotional state of a football team heading into a bowl game. But there are reasons for Georgia to be on guard against a letdown in the Capital One Bowl.

The No. 7-ranked Bulldogs (11-2) are coming off a game in which they literally finished five yards shy from playing for a national championship. The SEC Championship ended with Chris Conley sitting with the ball on the 5-yard line in the Georgia Dome and Georgia unable to stop the clock. Time ticked away in a 32-28 loss to No. 2 Alabama.

Not only did the Bulldogs come up short in their bid for the national championship. They lost consideration for a BCS bowl. So now they head to a non-BCS bowl to face a 10-3 Nebraska team coming off a 70-31 loss as a double-digit favorite.

Add to that a looming threat of distraction. Twelve UGA defensive starters are expected to be moving on, nine due to exhausted eligibility and three others due to soaring NFL stock. Even junior quarterback Aaron Murray admits that he’s “definitely going to think about” the NFL draft. Perhaps having an eye on the future is understandable.

Final exams over, the Bulldogs reassembled Wednesday for their first of 15 bowl practices. Coach Mark Richt, speaking at the team’s Capital One Bowl Media Day, said he isn’t entirely sure yet where his team’s collective head is. But he believes they’ll be engaged and motivated in time for the Jan. 1 game in Orlando.

  • “There are still things that are worth playing for,” Richt said, before enumerating them.
  • “ Number one we get to play another football game. I think our guys enjoy playing football, so I think that in itself is going to be enough motivation.
  • “I think landing where we landed as far as the Capital One Bowl, being in Orlando in a warm weather climate, knowing we were going to play on Jan. 1 against an outstanding football team – I think all those things have been positive.
  • “I will be challenging our leadership to finish better than we did a year ago and to solidify the job that they’ve done, because I think they’ve done an outstanding job to this point. I think they need to put an exclamation point on it or at least finish strong in a manner worthy of the way they led the entire offseason from January until now. That will be a big part of it.”
  • “I’ll be talking a lot to the younger guys – the guys who know they are going to be coming back – to honor (the seniors) with the way they play.”

There is evidence of Georgia’s not being terribly motivated for bowl games in the recent past. It could be argued the Bulldogs were not intensely interested — or at least lost interest about halfway through — in last year’s triple-overtime loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl. And Georgia definitely wanted to be elsewhere in the 2010 Liberty Bowl, when the Bulldogs lost 10-6 to a extremely motivated Central Florida team. The Bulldogs were similarly disinterested in the 2001 Music City Bowl, which ended in a 20-16 loss to Boston College.

But Georgia players insist there will be no hangover of disappointment.

“Me, personally, I just want to win a bowl game,” Murray said with a laugh. “I haven’t won one as a starter, so I know I’m going to be working extremely hard to win this game. And this senior class has just meant so much for this program, for bringing us back to where Georgia needs to be. I know myself and all the other underclassmen want to send them off on the right note.”

Said senior linebacker Christian Robinson: “Yeah, we were five yards away from being somewhere else. But let’s not show that we’re not worthy of it by not finishing.”

The 2012 Bulldogs have a chance to become just the third team in school history to win 12 or more games. The 1980 national championship team went 12-0 and the 2002 team finished 13-1 after a Sugar Bowl win over Florida State.

“Jarvis (Jones) and John (Jenkins) said after the (SEC Championship) game, ‘This feeling we have now, we need to take that out on Nebraska,’” freshman linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. “I know the young guys and all the other guys on the team don’t want the seniors going out with a loss in a bowl game after going 11-2. We want to finish the season strong and finish the drill.”

Your characterization of last year’s Michigan State game is off the mark. They were a legit top 10 team and proved to be the better team because we could not block their massive defensive front and our defense got worn down from being on the field all day long. It had nothing to do with some psychobabble crap about a “letdown” or losing interest. People have always acted like we lost to Duke or something in that game. It kills me. And we’re going back to 2001 to make a point Chip? Come on man. You’re better than this.

I think they’ll be fine. It doesn’t mean anything to anyone outside of UGA circles, but this season will be remembered if they finish 12-2 and in the top 5. Another 11-3 season and all this crap about being “5 yards from a national championship” will be all but forgotten. Its a big deal.

Thanks.

They have every motivation: to show that they deserved that last 5 yards, to show that they can win a bowl game with talent when motivation is difficult, to show that UGA is back to relavence. So you tell me why the people who already say Murray can not win the big games would not add he can’t win a bowl game either. Myself I look forward to the Nebraska game. I think it will be a great matchup that the Dawgs can win. I hope people don’t take Nebraska lightly because of the blowout by Wis. I see that game alot like our game against South Carolina. For some unknown reason neither Nebraska or Georgia showed up in those games. I believe if we played South Carolina today we could blow them out. Nebraska and Wis played during the regular season and Nebraska won by 3 points. We need to bring our A game to this bowl because the whipping Nebraska took will not sit well for them and they will be looking for someone to take it out on. Would you have wanted to be in that locker room after that game. For Coach Richt I think he is a very good coach and a great man. I would not trade him for Saban or Meyer.

My biggest concern with UGA football is our strength of schedule. Until we play actual play top 40 teams for our 4 non conference games we will continue to be 9-3 range because we play a lollipop that takes away our mindset then we go play a SEC school at their place and its a 180 degree turn in competition. We need to play the best teams every week so we are consistent with our focus and energy. You can’t give yourself an easy schedule like we did this year and think it will be EASY to run the table and walk into a national championship. We need to schedule these non-conf games all around the country in different climates to have our team experience all elements of football across the USA. This does two things, gives UGA more national exposure and will be a great learning experience in how to deal with different climates.
example: we played 8 home games and 4 away games. we need to be 6 and 6 or 7 home and 5 away.
playing 2 home games to 1 away game is just babying our players, we dont want to nurture, we want nature to mold our team.

Joe Dawg,

To hell with the Koolaide Drinking Richt / Bobo / Grantham Lovers.

This year the stars were lined up for The Dawgs. Despite a loss to SC The Dawgs pulled themselves up (the players did it themselves in my opinion after the D was “called out”) and we got a second shot at The Big Dance.

Bama is not what it was a year or two ago. The D blewout because the O couldn’t control the ball for any decent number of first downs and that’s why we lost. The O line was just awful. The clock management (or lack thereof) by Richt at the end of the game was unforgiveable. We might have won the damn game otherwise – despite our often inability to convert on third down.

I think we’d have beaten ND but who knows?
It’ll be interesting to watch The BCS Title Game.

We need to play a big 10 school in december so we know how to deal with the cold, we need to play a pac 10 team early in the year to deal with time change, we need to schedule teams that can make the top 25 instead of playing Ga Southern. We need to bring in a big school to gain national exposure and make UGA marketable and easily accessed by High school players all around the country, basically we need to play schools every year from different parts of the country, this will grow our fanbase and make UGA an elite level school that a kid from Oregon would want to come to or a guy from wisconsin would want to play down here. Yes we are in the SEC and that is a great recruiting tool but when anybody talks SEC big time players they say Alabama, Fla or LSU and usually leave out UGA.

As always, I am a dawg through and through. However, even though we almost pulled it out, we did not do too great a job up front. The o-line has improved…but was not quite in the top-tier level. As for a let-down in the bowl loss last year, if anyone watched the game, M-State’s D-line popped us in the mouth. I hope (and think) that our-o-line can and will get better. Yeah, Gurly had some yards on ‘Bama, but (especially in the second half) ‘Bama showed us what a big-time line can do. We put forth a great effort in the SEC title game and came up short. Hopefully our o-line will step up next year and mature….we are losing some D-studs; hard to get a good read on next year.

GT Bob,

Murray is a good, solid QB who has played behind a lousy O line for years. In the big games the opponents have had great D’s – like Bama, SC, UF (not GT of course). So, the worse for the O line the worse for the QB. The young man has made his share of mistakes but nothing that cannot be corrected in the NFL.

Here is what I know about Murray. He is 1-11 against ranked teams. In the one win he did get he threw for 150 yards and 3 INT’s. You can’t really give him much credit for that one. He was an honorable mention for the all SEC team. Not really a hard team to crack as a QB. He is ranked 79th in passer rating against teams with winning records. He has height issues. These are all facts. You say he has only struggled against great defenses. I hate to break it to you but in the NFL he will be seeing better defenses every week than anything he saw in college. What was that, 22 years ago? Those were the days.

Disinterested? How could they be? The best statement they can possibly make to end this season is to put a non-stop beatdown on their bowl opponent. Draft stock goes up; morale goes up; the expectation for next year goes up; recruiting stock goes up; standards for excellence and perseverence are established in the under-classmen. It’s up to the coaches to communicate that, just like every other game they played this year, it is a win-lose situation.

Put a 2007 Hawaii-style whoopin’ on those boys from Nebraska and everybody (that matters) will be quite satisfied with this season.

Joey

GTBob, you are making yourself look silly by insinuating the NFL cares about Murray’s record vs who-the-hell-ever, than they care about his actual QB skills. Mechanics, accuracy, arm strength, athleticism, and brains are what matter. How he displays all that at the NFL Combine matters. Not his college or high school win/loss records. The NFL does realize it takes a whole team to lose (or win) a game.

If wining college games was all that mattered, David Greene and Colt McCoy would still be putting Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers to shame in the NFL, right?

Murray has proven over and over he has those those skills, winning the Elite 11 as a HS senior, over the likes of USC’s Barkley, LSU’s Mett, and Texas’ Gilbert. At the Manning Bros QB Camp last summer, all of the Mannings, including dad Archie bragged about Murray’s arm strenth and accuracy, saying he “could make every single throw” at the camp. His arm strength was as good as anybody’s at the camp, including Barkley’s.

You don’t like Murray because he is UGA’s QB. Fine, but stop with putdowns of Murray. Did you watch Monday Night Football this past Monday? Do you honestly think Murray could not make those Brady-throws with all the time he had in the pocket?

Or let me word it this way, would Tom Brady win more games playing behind the O-lines Murray has played behind?

Alabama is over, move on. We just need to go out and beat Nebraska. The whining, second guessing know it alls will never be happy. If we fired Richt and hired Saban as the next coach they would be complaining again after his first loss. Coach Richt is doing a great job. Murray has done nothing but play his heart out for UGA. Arm chair quarterbacking is great and everyone does it. Its part of sports. But, seriously….we just played for a National Championship and came up a fingernail short. These guys deserve a lot more praise than what they get.

GTBob, you are making yourself look silly by insinuating the NFL cares about Murray’s record vs who-the-hell-ever, than they care about his actual QB skills.

They do care about how Murray performed in big games against stronger defenses. It is an indication of how quickly he can make decisions and of the quality of those decisions. There is nothing special about Murray as far as QB skills go. There are plenty of QBs in college football with better physical intangibles than Murray. He needs big time performances to fall back on and he doesn’t have any.

Murray’s height will be an issue at the next level. That said, I hope he comes back next year. Shatters all of the records. Stays in school, gets his PhD, and stays out of football. 80% of them end up with busted up bodies and busted wallets.

Preston Jones was on an NFL roster because he was tall with a big arm. How many games did he start for UGA? 3? They are looking for another animal in the NFL. That animal is not Aaron Murray’s body type. You’d better be pretty fast to play at his height. They would rather have a guy with a ten cent head with height and a gun, see Jeff George, than take a chance on a winner like a Joe Hamilton or an Aaron Murray.

I think the 4th quarter of the UF game and the Bama game showed that he is mentally tough enough. Maybe he turned a corner with that UF win after starting as poorly as he did, I don’t know. He is a DGD and would be very happy with him leading the O next year. We really will need to score a lot of points no matter who is under center.

There are six elite SEC teams this year.

Each of them played three of the other Elite teams.

Alabama and FLA went 2-1 and get the NC and BCS Sugar Bowl. Rightfully so.
The other four went 1-2. I rank them: Georgia, Texas A&M (for its win over AL), LSU and SC.

Most of the Tech students with fake GA names regularly beat down Coach Richt. Obviously they would love to have another coach at UGA that they might be able to beat once in a while.

I went through the Top 25 AP poll and looked at each HC. At least 6 are untouchable from the schools where they are (Saban, Kelly, Meyer, Muschamp, Miles,Spurrier etc). All of the rest have far less success than Coach Richt and none have won a NC.

So for those of you Tech students, who act like middle school kids, with GA handles, don’t demand a change without a legitimate replacement.

As for those who think Hutson Mason can easily replace Murray, you are very misinformed. Hutson is a great kid and a tribute to UGA, but he has never started a single SEC game. There is absolutely no way Hutson or any other QB on our roster can replace a QB with three years of starting experience. It’s not possible, but that’s exactly the reason the Tech guys with GA handles want Murray to head to the NFL. I’m for him either way and deeply appreciate the work ethic and integrity he has displayed in his career.

I have not always agreed with dawgfan this year, BUT I too had the same Two questions reading this topic. “similarly disintersted in 2001″. Really? I’ll give Chip credit that he probably is in better position to know the team’s mindset 11 yrs ago in a bowl game, but since it was thier first year under an entirely new staff, and a freshman QB, I’m not sure they lost because they were not interested. Maybe, but thats a bit of a stretch to list it here. And last year there were some very obvious real issues that came back to haunt them against a very good top 10 team. To say they simply lost interest at halftime…….mmm. not sure about that one.

I think time will tell on Aaron Murray. He does have all the intangibles to be a NFL qb and a team will take a chance on him and he will probably be very serviceable in the league. Using the argument on of signature wins against ranked opponents or his height does not translate to success in the NFL. Stafford struggled winning the big games at UGA in his college career, but seems to be doing fine in the NFL. I would also be curious to see some stats on Drew Brees in college.

Consider, had we tried to get a 1st down and failed. They drove the remaining 35 yds and scored the go ahead td. and it took them three minutes to do. We would have had two minutes to generate the last winning drive rather than the one minute we ultimately had. Would it have made a difference? The reason why Richt has more pros is that he encourages skillsets that transfer such as cross training linemen and big physical receivers that block downfield!!!, I want him to stay but he can easily leave!!!

ESPN reported that Aaron Murray says that he is so disturbed by the ending of the Alabama game that he is no longer able to sleep. Well that is what happens when you are on the cusp of a national championship and your idiot coachs don’t allow you to give it your best shot. Richt and Bobo are fools!

This actually reminds me of the Hawaii Sugar Bowl. This is the fate of a Dawgs fan. We always end up playing some BS opponent, in some BS bowl, and when we do go to a real bowl, we still have a BS opponent. Half the time we lose because of a lack of motivation, this time we won’t. It will be a blowout, and we’ll then have to watch teams we are better than play other decent teams. Heck, GA Tech plays USC. I would 10 times rather play them than Nebraska.

Jim, Don’t blame Murray for the SEC champ loss. That is all Richt. Murray was ready to spike the ball and have 3 plays to score. CMR overruled him. As to the team being ready, we’ll see. Richt has long record of NOT getting the team ready. May be defensive player will do the trick again.

John,

You are spot on the mark in my opinion.
Murray is a solid QB who will play in the NFL if he remains uninjured.
The guy has taken shot after shot for three years and still drills a tire at 20 yards.

True too is your view of the end of The SECC Game. Richt blew it and this was not the first time he’s done that. It was the type of error that first time coaches make as well as bad tenured coaches.

Richt’s inability to prep a team in postseason bowl games in legendary.
The UCF loss was an absolute embarrassment.
I hope this time the players take things into their own hands and play for respect because they sure don’t get juiced from Richt.

Yeah! Yeah! I know! There are a lot of disappointed Dawg fans out there. I’ve read it all..Richt/Murray can’t win the big games. Only two teams made it to the “Big Game”, Georgia was one of them. Since they changed the rule eliminating ties…somebody loses.
Nebraska gave up 70 points to Wisconsin..Georgia gave up 35 to SC. Don’t overlook Nebraska. They have motivation to beat an SEC team and redemption for giving up 70 pts. to Wis. They hate the SEC going back to the days of Devaney. Beating GA. would make their season. When Nebraska was on top they belittled the SEC and proved it by humiliating Ala. in the championship game. I’m as much a Bama fan as I am a GA. fan and I remember the things they said about the SEC. Surely there are some of you bloggers that remember those days. Instead of berating Ga. start pumping them up to kick Nebraska’s butt. The Ala. game is over. The new season starts in the Capitol One bowl.

I don’t hate Ga. Tech….I don’t like their brand of football. They have an egomaniac for a coach(would the Ga. fans like to have him replace Richt?), Johnson’s brand of footbal is …dive left…dive right…sweep option right… sweep opition left…on third and long throw end over end pass…punt. Really exciting! The point is, would you like to get a new coach like PJ? Not really! It could happen! Ga. lost to Ala. because of experience, not lack of talent. GT is so mired down in Johnson’s offense and players recruited for his offense, it would take a new coach 4 years to purge that talent and start a new offense better suited to big time football. Ga. plays “Big Time” football. They got to the big game. Alabama’s attitude is “Losing is not an option….that comes from experience. Ga. is getting there.

Dawgnole..Getting into a word fight with Moist Dawg(what does that mean, anyway?) serves no purpose. Not arguing with him would be like Ga. humanely not scoring 60 pts on GT, or Ala. letting Auburn off the hook for further embarassment by taking a knee inside their ten yd line. No disrespect intended, but I hope his 7 year old son doesn’t grow up with his attitude. As far as allegiance to more than one team…I pull for any SEC team playing a team out of conference.
