Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray ‘definitely going to think about’ NFL draft

ATHENS — Georgia’s Aaron Murray refuses to get into a detailed discussion about his plans after this season. “All I’m thinking about right now is Nebraska and the Capital One Bowl,” he says in various different ways. But the Bulldogs’ record-setting quarterback did allow that the prospect of entering the NFL draft after this, his redshirt junior, season is a very real and serious consideration for him.

“I’m definitely going to think about it and pray about it and sit down with my family (to discuss it),” Murray said during Georgia’s Capital One Bowl Media Day Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldogs’ football complex.  “But that’s not going to be probably until after the bowl game. I’ll sit down with my family then and really think about it. I have yet to write down anything. I like to write things down and to the pro-con thing and talk to my parents about it. I don’t want to do that until the bowl game. I just want to focus on Nebraska until that’s over. Then we can sit back and relax and discuss.”

There are many out there who will scoff at the notion. They’ll say Murray — listed at 6 foot-1 — isn’t tall enough to excel in the pro game. They’ll say he won’t get selected early enough in the 2013 NFL draft to make it worth his while. They’ll say he’ll want to come back and finish off the few career passing records he doesn’t already own.

But then there are others who vehemently believe Murray not only will make it as a pro but even project him as a “franchise player.” That was the determination of former Super Bowl coach and current NFL television analyst Tony Dungy, who recently sung Murray’s praises to a national audience on the Dan Patrick Show.

“I think if Aaron comes out, he’s a franchise quarterback,” Dungy said when Patrick pinned him down on the subject. “You get a chance to draft a guy and put him in place. And the Chiefs have some play-makers. . . .”

Patrick interrupted Dungy mid-sentence to have him clarify that he thought Murray is “a franchise quarterback.”

“I do,” he said, “because I know him.”

Dungy’s son, Eric Dungy, played with Murray and Plant High in Tampa. Eric Dungy now is a sophomore wide receiver at Oregon.

“So I know the type of worker he is,” Dungy said. “He’d pick my son up in the mornings and go throw, really early Saturday or Sunday mornings. He’s been that way his whole life, just like Peyton.”

Again, Patrick pressed Dungy.

“So you’d take him over Matt Barkley?”

“I’d take Aaron Murray,” Dungy said.

“Geno Smith?”

“I’d take Aaron Murray,” Dungy reiterated.

So who would he take if he had the No. 1 overall pick, Patrick finally asked.

“I would take Aaron Murray,” Dungy said without hesitation.

All of which is NOT to say Murray will be taken anywhere that high. Likely not. But, as they say, it takes the infatuation of only one team to make it happen.

And besides, for Murray, it’s not all about draft position.

He has already had a tremendously productive career at Georgia. A three-year starter, Murray is the SEC’s leading active player in total offensive yards (9,618, 10th in SEC history), completions (660), TD responsibility (99, fifth in SEC history), TD passes (89, which is tied for second SEC history) and passing yards (9,399). Currently, Murray leads the nation in pass efficiency at 177.2 and he was named honorable Mention All-SEC this past week.

But he has also nearly exhausted his options academically. At the end of spring semester he will be well on his way to completing requirements for a masters degree in industrial psychology. He could pursue a doctorate, perhaps, or just piddle around with his final thesis. And, of course, Georgia will be loaded on offense, so championship and record pursuits could be enticing.

Murray, again, doesn’t want to speculate too deeply at this point.

“I’m waiting to break down the pros and cons,” he said. “It’s a tough decision and I need my parents and to write everything down. That’s just the type of person I am. I don’t want to just think of things on the top of my head. I want to write things down and think about it and go from there.”

For what it’s worth, Chris Conley and some of Murray’s other teammates think he’s coming back. But Murray promises to keep them in the dark for as long as possible as well.

“Maybe I can milk a couple of dinners out of this,” Murray quipped. “They know I’m not going to talk about it or make any decisions, so they’re not going to bother me about it. But I think the whole dinner thing may work in my favor. I’m going to have to tell the offensive line, ‘Hey, it’s your turn to take me out for ice cream.”

But when talk turns to things like his much debated height — “I AM 6-1,” he insists — or draft analysts such as ESPN’s Mel Kiper say he should “go back,” Murray’s competitive nature kicks in.

“You know, he’s not the one drafting,” Murray said of Kiper’s assessment. “But I don’t really listen to all that stuff. That’s something way down the line that I’ll think about.”

If he stays he could rewrite the record books and possibly win it all. The defense is rebuilding but the whole offense is in tact and ready. He should have good blocking next year and he is finished with school so he can dedicate all of the time to films and practice.

I think this is his NFL draft. There are no really standout QB’s and he ended on a high note even though we lost – he played great. I am guessing he wants to have a stellar game against Nebraska to raise his stock. If he struggles he will probably stay. If he stays he could get hurt and ruin his NFL career. I hate to see him go but Mason deserves the time he has been waiting patiently like DJ Shockley.

Murray is the most accurate passer to ever play at UGA. He is smart, tough, and a leader. Our season looks better next year if he returns and UGA should begin a Heisman campaign for him. First things first, though, focusing on Nebraska.

Why not wait another year and mature and gain expeience? Could win a championship.

I could see making a strong argument to enter the draft if I were a running back or wide receiver as their playing careers only average a few years in the NFL. On the other hand QBs tend to play in to their mid or late thirties.

The money thing doesn’t make sense to me for a first round draftee. It’s sort of like the mentality of a person who waits to play the lottery til it reaches $300 million give or take a few milllion. Their thinking is that the are going to wait to purchase a ticket because they couldn’t live the rest of their lives on a measily $50 million.

Most of the first round draftees make several million guaranteed even if they don’t play a down.

Young man, enjoy the wonderful opportunity of playing another year in a passionate, youthful football atmosphere with a coach who is a terrific role model.

…get drafted in rounds 1, 2, or 3 – make a minimum of $600K if drafted in the 3rd round, and much, MUCH more if drafted higher…or

Come back and set all records for UGA as a QB – but, possibly get hurt and miss out on the mega bucks in the NFL. (and forget about the lousy $1mil insurance policy against injury). And, if next year is as good as this year, he still has a chance at being drafted quite high.

Plus, coming back you MIGHT finish your PhD, but probably not, and if not drafted high next year, he will still have a minimum 6 figure salary to go to in his chosen field.

Yes, it is a tough decision, so his current stand to let things be until after Jan 1 is correct, and the best of luck to him in choosing which way to go…

I think Dungy is right. Aaron has made it to the NFL ready point and I think he would go in the first round in the 2013 draft. I’d REALLY like to see him stay, but Hutson Mason is probably the best back up we’ve had in years and with the running backs and offensive line we’ve got Mason will do fine. I would go if it were me, but I like money and the NFL is where it’s at. NCAA football is rough and he could have a carreer ending injury next year playing for the Dawgs. Go get the money Aaron. Tomorrow is NEVER a given.
Saying UGa will be better next year is just STUPID. It is as Stupid as Preseason Rankings.
You Never know what players could go to the NFL early. You never know which players might get arrested or failout and not be on the team come next Sept.
Murray could say he is going to stay and then get in an accident over the summer and not play for UGa or the NFL.
Wow he could have all the SEC records and not ever make it in the NFL. Great to have your name in the record books but better to have your name on a Big Bank Account. Zeier and Greene have their name in those books too but they Got a Little NFL money and held the clipboard. Murray wants more I suspect. Want to try to be Tarkington or Stafford maybe Q. Carter or even Zeier or Greene.

I really like Aaron Murray. He’s a great player and a great student, which makes him an attractive student-athlete for the school to use today and in the future for recruiting purposes.

He can make all the throws. He can read defenses and make audibles at the line of scrimmage.

My major concern is his physical build and how it will hold up in the NFL. Yes, he takes hits and jump right back into the game. But look at the pounding Jay Cutler has taken this year with the Bears and their abysmal offensive line. Remember how quickly Andre Ware was out of the league with an equally abysmal line at Detroit. And there are numerous other QBs who have suffered the same fate.

The NFL is a meat grinder for any player, but especially quarterbacks. If Murray has a chance as a professional QB, it’s in the Canadian Football League. The players aren’t as big, a few steps slower and the field is wider, which will allow him to use his mobility. Some might point to Joe Theisman, who has a similar build, and his work in the NFL, but that was 20 years ago. The same for Doug Flutie. Pat Haden, almost an identical-sized QB to Murray, played in the league 40 years ago.

Like I wrote in my opening paragraph, I like Murray a lot and wish him well. I’m just very cautious about his chances of success in today’s NFL.

Murray is a worker, a studier, a thinker. We’ve seen great athletes play in the NFL at QB who have 5 cent heads. Murray’s only drawback to some GM’s may be his height. That will not change. Murray should realize his own dreams. If he dreams to be an NFL QB, jump into the draft with both feet.

Murray has obviously studied hard in college and planned for a life after football. Georgia may have given Murray everything it can, just as Murray has given Georgia almost everything he can.

In my estimation, time to move on. However, the choice is Murray’s and I’ll be behind him no matter what.

Mason has done nothing! To say UGA will be the same with or without Murray is completely ignorant! Murray has broken many Uga and Sec records. He destroyed the Uga touchdown record, and He is the first Sec Qb to throw for 3000 yards 3 years in a row. He is a great leader and the team loves him. The leadership Murray has alone will be hard to replace! How do you replace an Aaron Murray? I’ve seen Mason play at G-day , he struggles. If Murray leaves……expect Gurshall to have 3000 yards rushing! Because They will be running a lot

Next year he can go and see what he can do in the NFL. I think that by coming back he will build up a lot of goodwill at UGA. I think his future as a head coach in the SEC is BRIGHT. His degree is perfect, he is a leader of ballers, he is smart, he knows football and he has the record of success as a player.

I think he can play in the NFL. But I believe he has a future as a coach. And he can make a butt load of money as the HC at The University of Georgia. Murray is a DGD.

It depends a lot on the team that drafts him, most likely, ala Wilson at Seatle this year. He is barely…if…..6 feet tall as well….and he has had an outstanding rookie season int he NFL I think Murray is very much like him in skill sets.

By the way…..if you have not heard….Marcus Robinson from Fort Valley, Ga, I believe….just decommitted from Clemson and will now becoem a WR at Florida. Robinson, Fullwood, Bailey, Thompson, and Hawkins (also from Georgia) make up a great year of recruiting WRs to the Gators. Muschamp is flat out getting the job done down in Gainesville.

Offense, if Murray returns, will be stout. A control offense, which would take pressure of a young defense with new names would alleviate loses from ‘12 team.

Defense, admittedly, has holes to fill for ‘13 campaign. However, the ‘12 Defense didn’t start to play ’til 2nd half of season and it gave up chunks of yards to some SEC foes.

Keys: Signing of Rueben Foster and Montavious Adams, alongside the other 2013 class signees, would replenish talent gap quickly. Foster and Adams will contribute early and often, as will Tray Matthews.

Final analysis: Aaron, if you want the SEC records and another shot at BCS/SEC title, then do it. Take out Lloyd’s policy (insurance for 1 year). Otherwise, say hello to Cleveland or Kansas City (who’d want to be drafted by those cities).

It is really tough to compare Greene and Murray. Greene only needed to score 21-24 points to win a game. Much more is put on the shoulders of Murray. If we don’t score 35-42 per game we lose an extra 2-3 games per year. I think Greene was great but I am not sure if I believe he is a better college QB than Murray. Record wise yes (but less was expected of him and his defense and special teams played better). Stat wise, Murray seems better to me. I think Murray has a shot in the NFL (and I hope he does well) but I would be more surprised if does well and has a long career.

December 12th, 2012
9:07 pm

At best, he is a mid round draft pick. If he comes back he will break and set records, but he will still be a mid round pick next year. Personally, If I was friend or family, I would advise him to go pro, while he is in the good physical condition he is in. Other than the Florida win this year, he has never shown any significant “presence” on the field.

Murray will not improve his draft status by coming back for one more year. The negative on him is his height and he will not get any taller by playing another year in college. If he was 6 foot 4, he would absolutely be a 1st round pick. I don’t know what round he will be picked him but in my opinion he will not move up in the draft by staying another year.

NCDawg

December 12th, 2012

I think Aaron is wise to say he will write it down and weigh the pros and cons. The real meat to this whole discussion is based on what the draft projection is. He will wait to have that done and once he gets that he can genuinely weigh his options.
For everybody writing off next year just remember that if he does return he will have a loaded offense at his disposal. This good be the best offense UGA has ever put on a football field. Auburn had a mediocre defense and won primarily because of their offense in 2010. The Dawgs defense will be young but I expect that they will improve quickly. I wouldn’t write off the season just yet.
Of course if Bobo gets a HC job elsewhere that will be a huge factor. Too many variables at this point.

The risk of staying doesn’t out weigh the reward. The greater reward is winning a national championship and not breaking all sorts of passing records. Matt Barkley came back to chase a national championship, that didn’t work out well for him. To add insult to injury he gets injured. I suspect Richt will field a good team next season but I doubt it’ll be a national championship team even if Murray stays. That train left the Georgia Dome two weeks ago. Barkley final season probably lost him a few NFL GM’s. Murray’s showdown with Saban and Bama is doesn’t get any better for him. Leave UGA with the SECCG in your rearveiw mirror and be prepared to give your new employer the reason why you didn’t spike the ball on the final drive. Good luck in NFL young man.

Truth is his weaknesses will not change with another year. He will not grow any taller and he will only pile up stats. The Nebraska game will tell a lot. Will they be focused? We can’t afford not to be.

Bama was a GREAT game and I’m still not over it so I know they can’t be. Hopefully the cool brisk air will get them ready. 12-2 doesn’t sound as bad…. just beating Notre Dame again for the NC sounded better.

Aaron Murray does not have what it takes to win championships at any level. After watching him ask the sidelines if he should spike the ball says it all. His psyche would not let him make a decision he knew needed to be made. He is a great kid, who wants to please, and in this instance he needed permission. Unfortunately, at that moment he needed to spike the ball and then ask for forgiveness. All the experience and film study will not give Murray what he needs to win championships. I liked him better when he was running for third downs without his coach’s permission.

The term “system quarterback” has become overused, but in the case of McCarron, it actually applies. How?

McCarron is a flawless quarterback when it comes to mechanics, but rarely is he asked to put the team on his back and make plays. Thanks to an amazing offensive line, two game-breaking running backs and a stout defense, McCarron has to do little more than manage the game for the Crimson Tide.

Does that make him a bad quarterback? Not at all, but it does make him a tough quarterback to evaluate based on performance.

McCarron’s mechanics get a passing grade, but you don’t see the poise of Andrew Luck, the big-play ability of Robert Griffin III or even the outstanding athletic potential of Ryan Tannehill. McCarron looks and moves like an NFL quarterback, but he hasn’t made NFL quarterback plays yet.

The best course of action for McCarron would be returning to Alabama for his senior season, where he’ll have another season to develop under NFL-level coaches while continuing to build his resume as a leader and as a quarterback who can make plays outside the system.

This is nearly as funny as the report that Division 1 schools are considering Bobo for head coaching jobs.

These reports are being generated by their agents. Dingy is a personal friend of the Murray family. Aaron Murray’s dad is battling cancer.

Murray has shown great courage and technical skills on the field, but he is too short to succeed in the NFL. He is really just five eleven. He is a psych major, but cannot handle the pressure to win the big games. In other words, he chokes. Three interceptions against UF in the first half this year. We beat Florida in spite of Murray, not because of him. Other than that, he is Zero for Twelve against ranked teams.

Best for Murray to stick around another year to break a bunch of records to set himself up fir a great business career in Georgia.

Don’t count on any championships next year, though.

Any of the other UGA quarterbacks can get us at least as far as Murray has…

The plain truth about Murray is that compared with the really great UGA QBs like Fran Tarkenton, Murray is an insignificant blip. In the NFL, he’ ll be hopelessly outclassed, and after a very lackluster year, he’ll be relegated to a practice squad for a year or two, then quietly dropped. Fortunately for Murray, when this happens, he’s intelligent enough to get a real job and support himself and a family, unlike the 90% of his UGA teammates who will end up on welfare or work at menial jobs that don’ t require any intelligence.

His size is an issue. He had a number of balls tipped this season ( final play against Bama ). So that will not change if he goes Pro. Thanks, LogicalUs for setting record straight. Hey, Yogi, when you get blown out, hang your head, don’t compete, and basically just give up, it counts as 2 or 3 losses.
HISTORIC beat down by SC over UGA this year. Probably the worst beat down in the SEC this year between the top 3 teams in each division. UGA will never live that game down- I won’t let it happen!

Moment of clarity- AM will not go Pro this year. Will be with Dawgs next year. Not enough to gain. This is definite.

What is wrong for him to go to the NFL and holding the clip board and not getting beat up. i would do that for a few million. I hope he does best for what ever is right for hi.

I wish the young man the best! He is a DGD and I would love to see him come back and put us in contention for a NC. But he has to do what he thinks is right for himself first and foremost. Good luck either way AM!

HM will NOT fill AM’s shoes in 13′ and that is a FACT! Thank God we have Gurley and Marshall… Ramsey without a doubt is going to be a GREAT leader and a phenomenal QB when he is ready!

Also it takes a team to win the “Big Games” so stop putting those loses on AM. Maybe if the O line would have blocked for him and the D would have showed up then we could have beaten SC. Pretty sure AM held his own and played well against Bama even though our D gave up a zillion rushing yards. GO DAWGS!

“Aj McCarron to come back for senior year” Oh good because he is awesome. With his huge 112 yards 0 td 1 int in the sec championship until his miracle bomb for a td. Yea i dont really think i would be happy about him coming back. He’s weak and most of the reason why AL loses the national championship and the 7 year reighn of the sec. I hate to say it but i think it will happen.

Murray should find out what he is worth to the NFL. Staying another year… he is probably better than anything UGA has on the bench. New quarterbacks seem to doing well in the SEC. LSU has QB position has improved. SC & Tenn new QBs looked good to me.

Whether he comes back or not the Dawgs won’t be competing for the East again while Gurley and Marshall are there. They won’t be relevant again for another 3-5 years.

smlarsen- you are a moron. He is Bama’s version of David Greene. Smart and efficient. With their D, OL and running game they don’t need him to throw for 300 and 3 TDs. It’s not like he got lucky on that bomb either, they’d been picking on Swann the whole game and he got burnt, again. In that situation you CANNOT

let the receiver get passed you. Give up the FG and go down 1. Ga marches down the field, spikes the ball, kicks the game winning FG. Done. We play in the NC. Not Swann’s fault we didn’t win. No one play makes or breaks a game.

You stats do one thing. They show how dumb you are for using stats from a 50/50 team to a 65/35 team over the course of 3 years.

Murray is good, but your stats are flawed.

All of this conversation about who is the best quarterback is just that…conversation! High school, college, or pros the quarterback has been assigned one job….carry out the game plan. Physical skills are required to do that. Both McCarron and Murray have those skills. Both QBs got their teams to the SEC Championship. They took some shots along the way but both never quit and played hurt. The stronger arm goes to Murray, the most disciplined and calmest goes to McCarron. I’m not going to knock Richt but if the QBs switched teams, Alabama would still be going to Miami. I like both of these young men. Courage, character, discipline and a good supporting cast of players make winners out of QBs.

Mike Quinn, if they play that game 5 more times and your O line isn’t allowed to hold on every single snap then ya know y’all chumps lose all 5 games right! Get off your high horse… If ya listen to Bama fans then you would think the score was 48-0 and they were playing there 3rd & 4th string.

It kills me how all of you Crimson blind losers look at the Sec championship. Are yall Serious? You won by 4 points….. Once again 4 points. Not to mention how tight all yalls butt holes were when we drove down to your 5. Did we score? NO. We did not. But the fact of the matter was we could have. So you rotting elephants can talk all the Sh** you want. The fact of the matter was is that it was a great game between two evenly ranked teams. Murray could be representing the SEC in that game just as easily as McCarron. However, by comparison of SEC CG stats, I would rather have Murray in the McCarron. Prediction= McCarron Chokes loses NCG and ends SEC reign of 7 years.

Aaron Murray. Remember, unlike college, you don’t get to pick your team in the NFL. Do you REALLY want to play for Buffalo? You just think it gets cold in Georgia. You’d be better off in Jacksonville, Miami, or Tampa Bay. Stay with the Dawgs one more year ’till your stock goes up. GO DAWGS !
