ATHENS – It’s likely to be a very good Christmas for Mike Bobo and his family.
Not only did Georgia’s offensive coordinator lead the Bulldogs to a record-breaking season that netted 11 wins and another SEC Championship Game bonus, but he’s also in line to have his compensation increased in 2013, either by Georgia or somebody else.
Bobo’s name has surfaced as a head coaching candidate at Southern Miss and, according to his agent, he is drawing interest for other jobs as well. Even if Bobo declines the overtures, it would likely result in an enhanced financial agreement from UGA.
Russ Campbell, the Birmingham-based attorney who acts as Bobo’s agent, confirmed that his client is being considered for jobs but declined to discuss specifics.
“I can tell you that he’s getting some long overdue consideration,” said Campbell, who was in California with Sonny Dykes, who was being introduced as the California Bears’ head coach on Thursday. “It’s unbelievable what Mike has done at Georgia; his track record speaks for itself. People are finally starting to notice.”
Bobo coordinated and called plays for an offense that already has set school records for touchdowns in a season and is on pace break records for scoring average (currently 37.2 ppg) and total offense (458.3). He also serves as quarterbacks coach Aaron Murray, who leads the nation in pass efficiency and is the first player in SEC history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Murray has thrown for 9,662 yards and 90 TDs with 30 interceptions under Bobo’s guidance. Bobo, Georgia’s quarterbacks coach since 2001, also developed No. 1 NFL draft pick Matthew Stafford. He was a finalist this year for the Frank Broyles Award, which goes annually to the nation’s top assistant football coach.
Oddly enough, Bobo has often been the subject of criticism by a vocal portion of the fan base, particularly for play-calling. In Georgia’s SEC Championship game lost to Alabama this past weekend, he was second-guessed for not having Murray spike the ball to stop the clock with 10 seconds remaining at the Alabama 8.
“It’s good to see (Bobo attract head coaching interest) because it has continued to baffle me how all these other coordinators get mentioned,” Campbell said. “He gets lost because of this false perception about the job he’s done there. I think it just must be one of those situations where familiarity breeds contempt and he’s been there too long. When you drill down and look at it, he’s done a phenomenal job. He went toe-to-toe with Kirby (Smar t)in the SEC Championship game; it went down to five yards, right? You hear Kirby’s name all over the place.”
Bobo’s name has also been attached to Smart, who has mentioned as a candidate for several high-profile coaching jobs. Alabama’s defensive coordinator and Bobo are best friends since childhood and attended UGA together. The thought is that the two could join forces in the right situation. Smart interviewed for the Auburn job, which went to Guz Malzahn, and reportedly is a candidate at Tennessee.
Bobo is ripe for the taking as he is not among the best-paid offensive coordinators in the SEC. He currently makes $335,000 a year (not including bonuses), which ranked 10th among SEC offensive coordinators coming into the season. He also has operated with a one-year contract, while the majority of SEC offensive coordinators have two- to -three year deals.
Bobo, who earned a $45,000 bonus for Georgia’s appearance in the SEC Championship game, is the second-highest-paid assistant on Mark Richt’s staff. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham makes $825,000 annually and has a three-year contract.
UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said he is aware of reports circulating that Bobo is a candidate for jobs. But he said he won’t get involved unless Richt asks.
“That would go straight to the head coach,” McGarity said Thursday. “That would not come to me. If it reached a certain level of interest, Mark would have a conversation with me. But we haven’t had any communication like that.”
Neither Richt nor Bobo returned messages seeking comment.
Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray told reporters toward the end of the season he didn’t think Bobo would leave UGA because “it’s his dream job.” Bobo has always been reticent to speak on the subject.
“I have no idea what’s going on,” Bobo said last week of being mentioned for head coach openings. “To be honest, the only thing I’m really focused on is the job I’ve got in hand right now. . . . If I worried about anything else I’d be cheating these players.”

The continuity at Georgia has been a big part of the success the last two years. This year’s failures at Auburn and Arkansas shows what happens when the system changes and the players recruited for one system have to play in a different system. What are the odds that we get a “BIGTIME O Coordinator” that runs basically the same system? What proven “BIGTIME O Coordinator” wants to come put up with as many malcontent bubbas as UGA has? We need to give Bobo a raise and more appreciation for the good job he has done.

If anyone really believes he is being considered for a head coaching job you have lost your mind. I would help pay his salary at any school that will take him. This is nothing but a ploy by his agent. His offense put up good numbers against very poor teams. His offense was completely shut down against SC and FL. I will give him some credit vs Alabama but one good game against top tier teams every couple of years does not cut it.

I hope this talk helps him get a raise so he’ll stay! Everybody is always griping about him, but, compared to other OC’s around the country, statistically, Bobo’s one of the best! Sure, I question his play calling from time to time, just like everyone else does, but, I did the same thing when CMR was calling the plays! All in all, I think Coach Bobo has done a fine job for UGA and we’re blessed to have him.

This is a joke. This is just window dressing to make UGA fans feel good about themselves after another embarrassing loss proving Richt isn’t big time. People are starting to ask why Richt never has assistants move on to head coaching jobs and Bobo is a great example. Bobo’s record lone as a coordinator should have landed him a job years ago but people can read through the lines. Anyone who says this guy can develop a QB its a joke. All the players he has had over the years have been good on just raw talent. He is about to have a guy (Aaron Murray) break all school records, have 12,000 pass yards and no SEC titles because face it, you are not winning next year either. Same with Stafford. This guy had the number one draft pick for three years…Zero SEC titles. I guess we are to believe he developed Shockley? Ha! Raw talent and instinct. He did a wonderful job with Joe Cox and Terishinki.

On the surface, I would say he doesn’t deserve a raise. However, based off the above list, I’d say he is due if most of those other bums are getting paid more. Also, if he were to take another job as head coach somewhere, Georgia probably will be better off from a play-calling stand point.

I’d have to say Bobo’s done a great job at Georgia. The list of Qbs that have run through Athens has been impressive. Detroit’s HC and OC called Stafford the “best prepared rookie QB” they’d ever seen. So, the guy can coach QBs.
Georgia’s offensive production? It looks pretty good to me, especially considering the unsettled o-line the past few years. Friend has done nice job getting those guys up to speed, I’ll be curious to see how the line does next year.
Recruiting, Bobo’s been named a top recruiter on several lists over the past 2-3 years.
Broyles Award finalist…well, that pretty much caps it. The pros who evaluate coaches seem to value Bobo’s contributions.
It’s a disgrace that he’s paid at the back end of SEC coordinators. He needs to be bumped up, and there’s no reason to stick with the 1 year deals, he’s been here long enough for a little job security.

Posters like OkieDawg, kds, DAve Cutler, D-wood come out of the shadows, stop hiding, be big boys. We can guess you are GT’ers, many of you, such a poor program with nothing to show for the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of Dollars tossed at Chan and Fish Fry. So bad the AD called hunting a job and left town within days or finding one, a rarity in today’s college athletics. Clemson’s job was barely open when D-Rad knocked on the door.
Worry about your own miserable program, we will worry about ours. We can afford to pay Coach Bobo $500,000 and add incentives, our Athletic program isn’t broke nor playing in America’s Cupcake Conference where the rats are jumping overboard to escape to greener pastures.

I posted on here the day after the Bama game that the biggest difference between Saban and Richt ( as coach’s, lot’s of differences as men) is that Saban will not let any phase of the game or team i.e. special teams, OL etc be a weak link. To win Championships, you have to be strong and solid in every phase of your team and coaching. The results are there to see. Saban on the cusp of #3 at Bama in a pretty short time. Hate him or not, he delivers what he’s paid to deliver.

While there are times I don’t agree with Bobo’s play calling, he is a very respected coach that is also an excellent recruiter. For those saying get rid of him, we have built our offense around his style of football. You can bring in a more highly touted Offensive Coordinator but then you have to build around the system. Georgia has some great Running Backs and QB’s in waiting. Changing Offensive Coordinators means you have to change the system and we might lose some recruits that we currently have committed. Change isn’t always the right answer. He is continuing to grow as an OFF Coord. Quite honestly, as much as we hate some of his calls, he makes plenty that are pure genius and we all forget about those. Keep the coaching staff together!

JB, The only way that happens is if Mark Richt hires a new OC from within. People on here are wanting to bring in a hile profile OC. A high profile OC will not run Mark Richt’s offense. they will bring in their own. So, if you let him go, you either promote from within which means you are starting from scratch all over again or you bring in a big time OC and you change the system. The reality is we don’t get a high profile OC without changing the system. that’s not the right decision.

The only quarterback in the history of the SEC to pass over 3000 yards for three seasons.Second all time in the SEC for touchdown passes.I think those numbers outweight his turnovers..I wouldnt trade Georgia’s OC for yours at Tech!

McGarity has a tough time retaining coaches at UGA. Lost 90% of the strength & conditioning staff last year because McGarity was too cheap.
How in the world Bobo is paid 3x less than Grantham is a shock. Grantham’s d gets 30+ scored in 6 of 7 last games vs ranked teams.
Bobo’s O is starting to put up points, 42 vs a stout South Carolina defense in 2011, 30 vs. Mich St, 28 vs Bama, looks like McGarity’s gonna lose another football coach playing silly little games.
Until McGarity leaves, UGA will never win the SEC. He is clearly in over his head.

Georgias main problem is —they willnever commit to the run game—-its always about some pocket passer trying to throw his way to National Championship game. Stafford was not from Georgia, Murray is not from Georgia———-no UGA team ever won an SEC title game without a QB from the state of Georgia. It only makes sense—who else would care? Give those runnings backs and I will run over teams. You cannot just run on and off and expect to beat defenses up—you have to be constistent banging the ball down the field. Passing is ok but it shouldn’t be a teams bread and butter.

I’ll help him pack. Unfortunately, Muschamp hired the guy that would be suited to take his place.
Bobo’s offense scored meager points against S. Carolina, Florida, and Alabama. But more against Bama than the other two. But even then, he did not do what Texas A&M did, which was beat them, and LSU and TAM had both exposed the Tide. There were times that UGA desperately need to sustain drives in the second half of the SEC CG but could not, and the tired D had to stay on the field. In contrast, Bama made good adjustments against GA to come back and win.
The points scored against and the win/loss record against top 10 and 20 teams is not good. The points and wins are against creampuffs. last season, UGA lost all 4 games that mattered. This year, it lost 2 of 3 games that mattered, with the win at FL being the one quality win.

Let’s see, the Dawgs have whipped Florida for two consecutive seasons, used to be our
biggest rival, won two consecutive East SEC championships, and would have won the
SEC this year, cept for the referees refusing to call holding on the wimps from Bama and the defense giving up the two pointer to Saban, which would have resulted in a 2 point deficit instead of the 4 point deficit, which the Dawgs would only have had to kick a field goal in the last 15 seconds to pull the upset. Refs must have been paid off by ESPN.

I know a lot of you want to get rid of Grantham, but I’d keep him. He had a lot of turmoil on Defense this year. 4 starters were out quite a while and it took a while to get them back into the system. Again, if you replace him, who takes over the system. he runs a 3-4 and if you bring a 4-3 coach, you have to change who you recruit. Whether you like Georgia’s Offense or Defense, it is the system we have and that is what they have been recruiting to. Changing it means a couple of years before Georgia has the right players in place to be back in the SEC championship.

Everyone talks about Georgia’s Failure on offensive/defensive in sec game but no one ever mentions the lost opportunity from missed field goals. If the Georgia Kicker makes a field goal he would have had a chance to make another one. Also if Georgia had a two-point conversion play. They could have gone on longer with a field goal at the end.

kral: actually the Dooley connection has been talked about for years; in addition to Lanie and Richt’s wife being very close friends as one of the other reasons that he has not been forced out. IF they really thought he was good and in demand, he would have been paid more AND given longer contracts. If he didn’t have the all the nostalgia (connection to Dooley, close friends with Richt, former player) he would have been fired after the Liberty Bowl debacle.

If I was advising Bobo, I’d tell him to hold out for a career job. A career as a HC can easily die at a Conference USA school without the big financial reward. If you flame out at a big time school like Tennessee or Auburn, it usually comes with a nice multi-million dollar parting gift. Dooley and Chizik are laughing all the way to the bank. I’d negotiate for more money at UGA and bide my time for a big job. A couple of more seasons like this one and Bobo will get his shot.

4 of the named coaches above are most likely losing their jobs since their head coaches were fired. Living in Athens has it’s rewards compared to most of the cities where these coaches have to reside. Moving from Athens and asking his family to relocate for a career move to make more money could be very difficult to do as well. Having said that, Bobo deserves a nice raise and at least a 2-3 year contract as he has developed into a fine offensive coordinator and has always been a great recruiter. His Georgia roots and loyalty plus his connection as a former player for UGA makes him invaluable.

“He went toe-to-toe with Kirby (Smar t)in the SEC Championship game; it went down to five yards, right?”
No No No. It’s more like 2 inches. If Kirby Smart coached defender holds the ball 2 inches closer for that interception during UGA’s last drive, you won’t have that 5 yard talk.

During his stay at UGA, I’ve criticized Richt for his poor time management. If BooBoo had anything to do with said time management in the SEC championship, he’s not better than high school coach material. If Richt was responsible, it’s just another reason for HIM to hit the road.

Bobo did his best work tis year minus the SC game.
Grantham is fine, UGA just had a serious lack of death and too many “stars”. All-star units hardly ever live up to the hype. One fine example is the Philadelphia Eagles the last 2 years. They were given the Super Bowl before the season started last year because of their all-star lineup. after all the free agents they signed…we all see how that went….same thing with UGA this year. Too many all-stars on that side the ball and a SERIOUS lack of depth. THAT is WHY Bama ran like crazy the 2nd half . Grantham is a great DC. Depth is being built with players to run Granthams defense.

Mike Bobo is not only a damn good coach he is a great person. He has more good old decent character than most of us can only wish we had. He is honest and tough and he knows how to deal with all the many problems that comes with coaching boys in the process of becoming men. I hope he stays at Georgia for many years to come. On the other hand he is ready to become a head coach at a major university.

Like many have said, Bobo’s numbers speak for themselves. There are, were times I as an armchair QB would have called a different play, but overall the offensive stats are on the upside with Bobo at the helm. I say Keep the man, give him a raise, and bring in…what was that guy on the sidelines talking about becoming a coach one day?? Hines Ward?? Bring him as an assistant…WR coach/assistant OC coach package with Bobo. Keep some continuity and bring in some new blood, some good ole tradition. We need more mentors to coach up our talented recruits. Ward would be a good choice to come in and be an influential coach and eventually become the OC if he does well. Go Dawgs!

I can’t believe some of you jerks are criticizing Grantham. It just goes to show that when you were born God decided not to give you a brain. Bobo needs to be paid more money based on some of the OC’s listed in the SEC — he is better than some of them. OTOH, Bobo has not learned that to win SEC games, you must run the ball first. In the first half of the Bama game, how many times did he put in a pass play on every first down — he became so predictable it was a joke. Just think how tired Bama’s defense may have been if he had run the ball more on 1st downs in the first half.

I cannot understand the disdain for Bobo and the general praise for Grantham. Look at the stats! I do not agree with every play call either, but overall the results offensively are good. We have been very fortunate at QB over the past years. That is not a coincidence. I give Mike credit for solid technique, sound coaching and great recruiting at that position. As for you folks that are crying for Van Gorder, look at the tape of our game at Auburn. Beast from the East — I thought the same thing you’re thinking until I watched the replay.
Watch the replay and look for the holding by Bama. Also — Richt is strictly an offense coach which leaves all of the defensive planning to Grantham. If we don’t see some heads roll after this game then I say look for a new DC. Grantham can fix it by hiring and firing his assistants. I shudder at the thought of having another Martinez. I would like to hear everybody’s thoughts on who we would get to replace Grantham. I still say the holding had all to do with their pot bellied freshman running for 180 yds.

I cannot believe that the words Bobo and Head Coach are being used in the same sentence! I love my Dawgs, but let’s face it- they backed into the SEC East with the softest schedule in many years. Look at the body of work over this past year- 1st half of the season was dreadful, and the 2nd half seems far more impressivve, largely because the 1st half was so dreadful. Better yet- look at Bobo’s body of work during his not-so-illustrious career at UGA. Good riddance, Mike Bobo!

Bobo is a good coach. Not a great one. Good coaches do more with more and less with less. Great coaches find way to do MORE WITH LESS! I believe Bobo is good person, a good coach, a good X’s and O’s guy. Where I believe he is lacking is in strategic thinking and planning.
Not having Murray spike the ball in the game against Alabama was the ultimate failure in my opinion. Murray asked to spike it….Bobo called a play…Richt fell on the sword after the game. That’s what I believe.
We never saw a time where Georgia made opponents have to worry about Gurley and Marshall in the backfield at the same time. We didn’t spread out defenses enough. We struggled against the likes of Kentucky and failed horribly against South Carolina.
I like Bobo personally. I just think Georgia needs someone who is a little more prepared to handle the unexpected and doesn’t panic at crunch time.
Georgia has to replace virtually their entire defense next season. This means the O.C. is going to have to have a very good read on what is happening with the defense, how long they are on the field, how tired they are, etc. Bobo does not do that effectively.
I wish him well whatever happens.

Bobo’s a good coach both on game days and in practice, preparation and recruiting. This season he seems to have matured and overcome some predictability with play calling. Give him a raise, he’s earned it.

I guess dave forgot about 2002 and 2005 when we did when the confrence. Its ok though idiots tend to forget things. We will just have to let him slide on this one. Mark Richt is the winningest coach in the sec. I know he does not have a national title , and for all the bama fans out there, that is what makes him a mediocre coach. In my eyes it doesn’t. I like Mike Bobo but its like he is ok with a 10 point lead. It seems every game we get into we go up by 10 points doing a mix of running and passing and then we just run run run. Then we end up punting the ball 4 drives in a row and then what do you know. The other team is right back in the game. I think hes a good coordinator but if he wants to be a coach he needs to learn how to keep the pressure up and use what has been working.

As a Tech fan I can’t help but give the man props. He has certainly earned himself rights to a head coaching position, or a significant raise at the very least. And Aaron Murray has NFL talent and I wouldn’t be surprised if Bobo leaves for a HC position and Aaron enters the draft.

The fact that so many of you Dawg fans are wanting to give the guy a raise would be hilarious….If you weren’t absolutely serious! I will admit, I have been highly critical of Bobo in the past, but the last couple of years, he has been just about as perfect as one can be. He will and should remain as OC at UGA. Mark this and write it down, and come back to it as you deem it neccessary, but I am predicting the following:
1. BOBO WILL REMAIN AS UGA O.C.
2. SMART WILL REMAIN AS AL D.C.
3. RICHT WILL RETIRE AS UGA HEAD COACH IN < 3YEARS
4. SMART WILL BE NAMED AS HC OF UGA

What other coaches are paid is irrelevant. Mike Bobo is an excellent QB coach and offensive coordinator. His character is good. His is a great mentor for these young men in his charge. He is a family man and has shown us no bad things. Look at the record. His offense scores lots of points. The only reason we ever lose is (with few exceptions) that our opponents out score us. Pay the man what he is due!

Like I was pontificating on 92.9 this morning, Bobo needs to go and should have been gone at least five years ago. I will now forever associate Bobo with poor Murray looking to the sidelines during the final seconds of the 2012 SEC title game, mouthing the words, “spike it?” What happened after that was not a “freak play” it was the result of poor coaching and lack of coach preparation. Time management is the realm of the OC, not the quarterback. Richt should be like Swinney at Clemson: when your coordinator lets the team down, time to fire the coordinator.

Bob – Thank you for your post. Was Vince Dooley a mediocre coach? Just rrying to find out what mediocre means. The problem whit the “”can win the big game” is that it lacks historical context. It’s like looking through a straw and drawing a conclusion. The big game started out, “Just beat Tennessee for the first time in 8 years.” check. Then the big game moved and was “Don’t lose to Tech two years in a row.” Then the big game was beat Florida for the first time in tweny years. Check did that. Then the big was beat Florida in consecutive years. Check did that. Then the big game was beat Alabama. Check. At home. Check. In over time. Check. On a pass play instead of a run. Check. Then it was get in the SEC Championship Game. Check Arkansas. Then it beat somebody hard in the SEC championshp. Check LSU. Then it was beat LSU in consecutive meetings. We didn’t do that. You cant’ win the big game! Then it was win 10 games. Check. Then it was win consecutive 10 games. Check. The it was go 11-1. Then it was go undefeated. Ok, we didn’t do that. Failure! Failure by a mediocre program! What constitutes the big game keeps moving and the definition keeps moving and if you don’t meet the new standard, you are mediocre even though you’ve check off all of the boxes for the big game except for the National Championshp.

“Ticket Holder”: this thread is about Bobo, but since you mentioned Richt…it is fans like you that are happy with mediocrity and I am sure that somewhere in the back of your mind you are thinking, “Mark Richt is a good Christian man…must make excuses for him… .” Take off the blinders and stop drinking the kool-aid.
In his twelve (12) seasons as HC, Richt has won only two SEC Championships and only defeated Florida four times (two back to back against Muschamp). However, to me, the fact that Richt has not been able to: manage the clock effectively in any big game (no need to mention the 4th quarter in the SEC Championship, but don’t forget what happened to the offense right before the half ended), reduce penalties in any big game (7 for 65 yards in the SEC Championship, compared to Alabama’s 2 penalties), or effectively maintain discipline among his players (see any number of arrests and assaults every season). Richt is a great recruiter and talker, but until UGA’s football program gets itself together on all fronts and wins the SEC Championship more than once every six years (on average), he will always be mediocre and fans with an ounce of brain matter should DEMAND better results.

Please define mediocre. And not with some idiotic “National Chamionship every year by fifty point margins after going undefeated in every game that was decided in the first quarter or you’re mediocre stuff. CMR with Bobo are the only coaches in Georgia football history to win two Sugar Bowls. 11-1 just isn’t mediocre under any reasonable definition. It just isn’t. Beating Florida two years in a row just isn’t mediocre. Having a 33-3 nonconference record in Sanford Stadium isn’t mediocre. And don’t give me this “we play patsies” crap. I watched us lose to Wake Forest, I watched us get blown out by Virginia. I watched us get blown out by Kentucky. I watched us lose year after year at Sanford Stadium. @FB: “Foolish name”? I am a male who attended the University of Georgia. Therefore, I am an “alumnus.” Please tell me you did not attend UGA, that would be worse news than Ray Goff returning.
Listen, let me bottom line it for you. We will always lose to the Alabamas of the SEC until we start to DEMAND something different. Alabama’s fan-base did and the administration responded by firing HC Mike Shula, a former star QB for the Tide. They then brought Saban, someone who was not connected to Alabama in any way, to do one thing: win championships. Until UGA gets the same mentality, 11-2 and SEC Championship Bride’s Maid is all we will EVER achieve. The end.

I hope he goes so we can get a high powered offensive genius. We lost the SECCG because the defense played too much in the 2nd half because the offense couldn’t make critical 1st downs due to stupid play calling (last year’s bowl game vs. Michigan State all over again). We have 3rd and 1 with 5 minutes left in the game and Bobo doesn’t even try a hard count when Alabama knows they have to make the stop. Then I’m yelling at the TV — rememeber the golden rule — don’t hand off. So, what does Bobo do — he hands off. Handing off on 3rd and 1 takes too long to develop and the defense gets penetration 9 times out of 10. Should have done a QB sneak — Football 101.

So with all these HC positions open, I am surprized that someone has not made Coach Richt an offer he couldn’t refuse. With all these 11-1 and 10-4 seasons, and going to the SECGC (but not winning), he should be in high demand. Certainly not “mediocre”.

I have to say Bobo has improved much as a play-caller, but his best attribute is may be as a developer of QBs. There is no other position that has had player after player live up to his potential as much as Mike Bobo’s QBs during the last decade+.

why do sportwriters continually say that murray could have spiked the ball with 10 secs. He could have spiked the ball with 14 secs. The team was lined up with the playclock stopped at 15 seconds. He could of spiked the ball at the line when they refs started the clock and lost a second, instead he drops to a gun, starts pointing around and runs 6 seconds of the clock. They also lost 9 seconds off the clock two plays earlier after a 1st down. Even if the pass was incomplete there would have been time for only one play. The rationale that they might catch Bama’s defense out of sync was nullified by 6 second delay which allowed Bama defense to get set. Also if Bama’s defense was in disarray Saban would have called timeout. There is no doubt, that was a bone-headed decision that Richt should have overruled.. Please, give me 3 plays with 14 seconds anytime.
Give me 3 plays from the 3 yard line anytime.

So you have expanded this worn out argument to include 2 plays earlier, as well? Well why not question the use to the first TO, several series before.
BTW, Alabama’s defense out of sync was NOT the rationale. Never was. You may recall the number of times that was asked and refuted. So you are presenting a false argument there.
The rationale was that they thought with 15 second they had 2/3 shots, they already knew what thier first play was, so they just ran it. And any incompletes would then stop the clock, without wasting a down. .That’s how they they had practiced it all year, so that’s what they did.
And actually you argue that you would take 3 plays anytime. Well, if you listen to the explainion, you would know that’s exactly what they were trying to do. They decided that clocking the ball would just cost them a couple of seconds, and a down. (Conley made a mistake and lined up wrong, is what cost them the 6 seconds, that’s what Murray was pointing to).
As has been pointed out by every possible analyst that has looked at that series, the (not spiking) had nothing to do with it. It was just a failure in execution. So If you want to argue that clocking the ball, would have given them time to discuss the play, make sure nobody makes a mistake, fine, but thats not your point.

FLA DAWG, what do you mean by “for so long”. Bobo is a very young coach and has only been a in a Co-ordinator type responsibility for a few years.. Same reason Kirby Smart has been “overlooked” for HC jobs. Running entire programs for BCS type schools is a pretty big jump. The guys we are seeing hired by the SEC schools have been coaching a while.

BTW, what “sportwriters” are continually saying that? I don’t recall very many even saying that in the early stages, other than when they were just repeating the conformist meme. Since then, and after review of the actual situation, and explaination, is there really still journalist saying that? (because they certainly can’t explain themselves if they are). I’ve seen PLENTY who are saying the exact opposite.

AltamahaDawg, that is the best comment on the thread! This is a bunch of non-fan, non-football geniuses wanting the greener grass without looking at the issue rationally. For a year, I have asked for ONE CANDIDATE that these “experts” can guarantee to match Richt’s record (you can do the same for for OC). Every time it has been crickets… Want a hot asst. coach? Ray Goff was a great asst coach. How about a hot HC at a lower level school? Great idea, Jim Donnan was that to a tee. If we canned any coaches, the fact is that Grantham, Bobo and Richt would be employed before we got our search team together.

Alta,
If Kriby Smart was “overlooked” then why did Bama up his salary when Martinez was unloaded and Richt’s rearend was warmed?
If you are seriously comparing the success of Smart / Saban with that of Bobo / Richt then consider comparing these two simple stats;
What is Bama’s record vs Top Ten Teams in the past four years?
What is UGA’s record vs Top Ten Teams in the past four years?
If the disparity of those numbers does not convince you of the difference in success of teams and coaching staff then you live in denial.
But you’re entitled to do that if that’s your preference my friend.
Bottomline, if any respectable team had offered Bobo a sweet deal he’d have been gone. Fact is, he’s still in Athens………………….and more’s the pity for Dawg Nation in my opinion.

Correction Chipper….there was 15 seconds on the clock. If he spiked it would have been 1 sec off or possibly none. At that point you get 2 or possibly 3 shots at the endzone. I’ve talked to every former college player I know (about 10) and I have not found 1 that would not have spiked the ball. It’s a no-brainer, Murray wanted to spike the ball (you can see it as he is running to the ball looking at the sideline. CMR and Boo Boo will never admit it in a million years, but if they had to do it all over agian 10 times, they would spike the ball 10 times!!! If he wants to go, then go to Southern Miss and let’s see how he does as the head guy….Can you say Derrick Dooley!!

Fellow Dawgs,
BoBo did a good job this year, but in all honesty should not have been made the OC in the first place. Now does he deserve a raise, IMHO “No probably not” but will in all likely hood receive one. Do I believe any team is actually considering him as a HC, NO I believe like others have suggested is a ploy. The fact that he did do a good job this year bodes well for next year and we will have a better idea of whether he has finally turned the corner and become a GOOD to VERY GOOD OC. One year can be an aberration when the other 5 his offense has struggled and under performed. Anyways it is not up to me but Coach Richt and the Atlethic Association.

NO, actually I said nothing of the sort. I make zero refence to success, top 10 or otherwise. YOU made the point about not getting a job offer as a HC as being “overlooked”. I’m sorry if you don’t like that my reference to a similar assistant in about the same place in his career as a retort that directly challenges YOUR point, but you can’t just change the argument and put words in my mouth to dispute me on it.
I assume that Smart got a raise because he was a vital part of a team that won some trophies. Had you made a point that says..”I wonder why Bobo wasn’t getting big raises” then I would not have responded to the “HC” issue, because that would not have directly disputed YOUR point then. But you didn’t.

I actually don’t even recall anybody (other than the one school he might have ever considered) ever coming after Kirby Smart to be even thier DC, much less a HC job. But, I make no assumption based on my lack of knowledge of such. So I don’t get the rationale that when a a coach (such as Smart or Bobo) already HAVE thier dream job for the time being, that other schools would somehow publically go after them anyway, despite knowing the answer up front. So If we never hear about any, because schools must be so stupid as to insist on a forcing a coach to make a public rejection to a LESSOR job, that just proves the coach isn’t worth a damn.

Saban has been coaching quite a long time and at severel other schools and the NFL. It’s seems likely he would have impacted MANY more more coaches in his career. He’s just simple touched more of them. And most likely some of them were already on that tragectory, with or without thier association with Saban at some level.
Saban is certainly a guy I would want to work under, if I were a young coach. He is THE professional football coach IMO.
I don’t think however that it’s much point that Richt hasn’t spun off a bunch of HC in 10 yrs or so. Personally, that’s not what I think we pay him to do.

Bama is 15 – 5 vs ranked teams and holds the best record against ranked teams of any team in The SEC.
If you cannot see the significance of the disparity in those records and the effect that Richt, Bobo, Martinez & Grantham have had on this program then I can only assume you are visually challanged.

I would expect a top ranked team(AL) to have a better record against lower ranked opponents, than a team that has not been a top ranked team (Ga) against higher ranked opponents.
I would suspect that Alabama was the favorite in those game, and Georgia was not.

Time for UGA to get a top flight Off. Cordinator. The end of the Alabama game was just another chapter in poor clock management that was delivered to the UGA fans! Murray was driving the bus headed for a victory and had the wrong play at the wrong time sent in 1 more time. Screen pass with no time outs, come on Bobo, call that play somewhere else next time!

Nelson, The amount of times Bobo called a run play on 3rd and long in the past 3 years, you could probably count on your toes. That is completely and utterly BS to suggest that it’s more time than not. Its not even close. It’s rare in fact, and only then, it’s a situational thing where they are protecting poor field position.
Without even looking, I bet you can’t even find a 3rd and long run play in however many games you want to pick ar random.

Look at that list of names up ther folks. 2/3 of them, most folks have never even heard of. And practically none of them have done a better job. You really think there are OC out there that can walk in here and beat School records, points, TD, and consistantly have offences that are at the top of the league in MANY categories, as Coach Bobo has done? Sure.
And IF we don;t have a good line, or a top notch RB, the new guy would be a 9 win OC , same as anybody else. But his name would be different. Ya hoo.
The problem, and solutions is so obvious that any casual observer of Georgia Football knows the truth. We are as good as the players we recruit on that side, and we havent had them. If you want to critisize Bobo for NOT recruiting or keeping the right players, fine. I would agree with that. That’s exactlay the problem, and it’s seems that is starting to improve. This “predictable play calling” meme is such thoughtless blather.
