UGA’s Mike Bobo ‘getting long overdue consideration’ for coaching jobs, agent says

ATHENS – It’s likely to be a very good Christmas for Mike Bobo and his family.

Not only did Georgia’s offensive coordinator lead the Bulldogs to a record-breaking season that netted 11 wins and another SEC Championship Game bonus, but he’s also in line to have his compensation increased in 2013, either by Georgia or somebody else.

Bobo’s name has surfaced as a head coaching candidate at Southern Miss and, according to his agent, he is drawing interest for other jobs as well. Even if Bobo declines the overtures, it would likely result in an enhanced financial agreement from UGA.

Russ Campbell, the Birmingham-based attorney who acts as Bobo’s agent, confirmed that his client is being considered for jobs but declined to discuss specifics.

“I can tell you that he’s getting some long overdue consideration,” said Campbell, who was in California with Sonny Dykes, who was being introduced as the California Bears’ head coach on Thursday. “It’s unbelievable what Mike has done at Georgia; his track record speaks for itself. People are finally starting to notice.”

Bobo coordinated and called plays for an offense that already has set school records for touchdowns in a season and is on pace break records for scoring average (currently 37.2 ppg) and total offense (458.3). He also serves as quarterbacks coach Aaron Murray, who leads the nation in pass efficiency and is the first player in SEC history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Murray has thrown for 9,662 yards and 90 TDs with 30 interceptions under Bobo’s guidance. Bobo, Georgia’s quarterbacks coach since 2001, also developed No. 1 NFL draft pick Matthew Stafford. He was a finalist this year for the Frank Broyles Award, which goes annually to the nation’s top assistant football coach.

Oddly enough, Bobo has often been the subject of criticism by a vocal portion of the fan base, particularly for play-calling. In Georgia’s SEC Championship game lost to Alabama this past weekend, he was second-guessed for not having Murray spike the ball to stop the clock with 10 seconds remaining at the Alabama 8.

“It’s good to see (Bobo attract head coaching interest) because it has continued to baffle me how all these other coordinators get mentioned,” Campbell said. “He gets lost because of this false perception about the job he’s done there.  I think it just must be one of those situations where familiarity breeds contempt and he’s been there too long. When you drill down and look at it, he’s done a phenomenal job. He went toe-to-toe with Kirby (Smar t)in the SEC Championship game; it went down to five yards, right? You hear Kirby’s name all over the place.”

Bobo’s name has also been attached to Smart, who has mentioned as a candidate for several high-profile coaching jobs. Alabama’s defensive coordinator and Bobo are best friends since childhood and attended UGA together. The thought is that the two could join forces in the right situation. Smart interviewed for the Auburn job, which went to Guz Malzahn, and reportedly is a candidate at Tennessee.

Bobo is ripe for the taking as he is not among the best-paid offensive coordinators in the SEC. He currently makes $335,000 a year (not including bonuses), which ranked 10th among SEC offensive coordinators coming into the season. He also has operated with a one-year contract, while the majority of SEC offensive coordinators have two- to -three year deals.

Bobo, who earned a $45,000 bonus for Georgia’s appearance in the SEC Championship game, is the second-highest-paid assistant on Mark Richt’s staff. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham makes $825,000 annually and has a three-year contract.

UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said he is aware of reports circulating that Bobo is a candidate for jobs. But he said he won’t get involved unless Richt asks.

“That would go straight to the head coach,” McGarity said Thursday. “That would not come to me. If it reached a certain level of interest, Mark would have a conversation with me. But we haven’t had any communication like that.”

Neither Richt nor Bobo returned messages seeking comment.

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray told reporters toward the end of the season he didn’t think Bobo would leave UGA because “it’s his dream job.” Bobo has always  been reticent to speak on the subject.

“I have no idea what’s going on,” Bobo said last week of being mentioned for head coach openings. “To be honest, the only thing I’m really focused on is the job I’ve got in hand right now. . . . If I worried about anything else I’d be cheating these players.”

I can’t believe some of you jerks are criticizing Grantham. It just goes to show that when you were born God decided not to give you a brain. Bobo needs to be paid more money based on some of the OC’s listed in the SEC — he is better than some of them. OTOH, Bobo has not learned that to win SEC games, you must run the ball first. In the first half of the Bama game, how many times did he put in a pass play on every first down — he became so predictable it was a joke. Just think how tired Bama’s defense may have been if he had run the ball more on 1st downs in the first half.

OK I’m having trouble figuring this out. It’s not April 01 so I know this is not a joke, but is somebody trying to pull a prank of some kind. There’s no possible way any team could be considering this guy, so what’s up? Somebody, anybody, seriously? Tell me it’s a joke, please!

To all you simpletons that are saying negative things about Bo Bo if all of your brains were added together it would be about the size of a BB. None of you could coach a pig to come to the feed trough,

The typical Alabama citizen meets these DSM-IV criterion to Delusional with Hallucinations; An erroneous beliefs that usually involve a misinterpretations of perceptions of Grandiose experiences. In other words the people of Alabama have Grandiose delusions that the state of Alabama is full of educated and refined people with class when the state is actually full of stupid, ignorant demented low class people especially the manic foot ball fans.

I don’t consider myself a jerk, Douglas, but I’m someone who would like to see Grantham move on. He is overpaid and over-rated. I’d like to see us get Van Gorder back since he is available. It’s when he left that our proigram has not been as good as when he was or DC.

Bobo may eventually go. At this point it would be in the interest of GA to give him a raise and encourage Murray to stay. If Bobo goes, so will Murray. I would. Why stay to be under an unfamiliar coach? May as well go to the NFL and have a new coach.

I cannot understand the disdain for Bobo and the general praise for Grantham. Look at the stats! I do not agree with every play call either, but overall the results offensively are good. We have been very fortunate at QB over the past years. That is not a coincidence. I give Mike credit for solid technique, sound coaching and great recruiting at that position. As for you folks that are crying for Van Gorder, look at the tape of our game at Auburn. The lack of technique displayed by AU’s pathetic defense should send both him and Willie to the business world.

I don’t think Bobo is the best OC in the SEC but I would put him in the top 3. Based on some of these teams listed, there are some overpaid OC’s that are not producing.

Did Bobo make that decision to throw the ball in overtime a couple of years ago that lost the Florida Game? The one that was intercepted and nearly run 100 yards for a TD? Instead of kicking a field goal with (back then) our #1 kicker?

Beast from the East — I thought the same thing you’re thinking until I watched the replay.
Watch the replay and look for the holding by Bama. Also — Richt is strictly an offense coach which leaves all of the defensive planning to Grantham. If we don’t see some heads roll after this game then I say look for a new DC. Grantham can fix it by hiring and firing his assistants. I shudder at the thought of having another Martinez. I would like to hear everybody’s thoughts on who we would get to replace Grantham. I still say the holding had all to do with their pot bellied freshman running for 180 yds.

You little girls still crying about holding? I can find just as much holding on UGA but don’t cry about it because it’s part of the game. Something you idiot Mutts know very little about. If you would like to go break down the film like you’re Zapruder or something look at Jesse Williams being held on that last long pass to Tavarres King to put ya’ll in shape to “spike or not to spike”. BLATANT HOLDING but of course you jackholes are too blinded by you head coaches tan to see it.

Your fan base and sportswriters are nothing but whiney little titty babies and that’s why no one else in the country respects ya’ll. You guys sure bark a lot…but your bite ain’t scaring nobody.

Bobo is one of the finest men and coordinators in America. Tennessee should be considering him for HC but I hope that UGA puts up the big money and gives him more than Grantham. Sad that TG a UGA newbie gets significantly more money than the proven OC MB.

I would be one happy DAWG fan if he were to leave. I’d even donate to the school that hires him away. I just penned a letter last week to AD McGarity that I would only send the minimum donation required to keep my seats while Booboo Bobo was the OC @ UGA. We will never be a relevant program on the national stage with him as the OC. He’s so predictable my 10yo knows what his play call will be before QB runs it.

I cannot believe that the words Bobo and Head Coach are being used in the same sentence! I love my Dawgs, but let’s face it- they backed into the SEC East with the softest schedule in many years. Look at the body of work over this past year- 1st half of the season was dreadful, and the 2nd half seems far more impressivve, largely because the 1st half was so dreadful. Better yet- look at Bobo’s body of work during his not-so-illustrious career at UGA. Good riddance, Mike Bobo!

Bobo can encourage Murray to stay by telling him that the fourth round is not really that high.
