Jarvis Jones only Bulldog to make Coaches’ first-team All-SEC

Following is UGA’s news release on six Georgia players being named to the Coaches’ All-SEC team on Tuesday. Junior outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year by The AP on Monday, was the only Bulldog named to the first team. . . .

ATHENS — Six members of the Georgia football team were voted to the All-SEC Coaches’ Team, according to announcement by the league office on Tuesday.

Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones was named to the first team, while junior guard Chris Burnette, freshman tailback Todd Gurley, senior nose guard John Jenkins, junior linebacker Alec Ogletree and senior free safety Bacarri Rambo were named to the second team.

Jones has recorded 77 tackles this season, including 22.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks, one interception, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 11 games. Jones currently leads the NCAA in forced fumbles per game and tackles for loss per game, and he is one tackle for loss shy of David Pollack’s single season school record.

Gurley has rushed for 1,260 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, becoming just the second true freshman in Georgia history to rush for 1,000 yards. He currently ranks second in the SEC and first among tailbacks with 96.9 yards rushing per game.

Burnette has helped pave the way for 184.2 rushing yards per game for the Bulldogs and the SEC’s second-leading rusher in Gurley. He also helped quarterback Aaron Murray rank in the top-five in the SEC in both total offense and passing yards per game.

Jenkins has accumulated 50 tackles this season, including 17 in Georgia’s last two games against Georgia Tech and Alabama. He has registered two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery to go along with 15 quarterback pressures.

Ogletree leads the Georgia defense with 98 tackles in just nine games. He has been the Bulldogs’ leading tackler in the last five games, including a career-high 15 stops against Georgia Tech on Nov 24. Ogletree also has 8.5 tackles for loss, an interception, fumble recovery and returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown in the SEC Championship Game.

Rambo leads the team with three interceptions in nine games this season and has 16 for his career, which is tied for the most in UGA history. He is ranked second on the team with three forced fumbles to go along with 67 tackles.

The SEC individual award winners will be released on Wednesday and the SEC All-Freshman Team will be announced on Thursday.

Georgia (11-2) will face Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET.

TO SHORT…………………………..Aaron Murray needs to stay at UGA.

Seems like when you have a losing record versus good competition, you should not make any ALL STAR team.

Only UGA fans are apparently impressed with Murray.

Wow, that was fitting to a team who laid it all on the line that night.
i hope all those young guys remember that feeling and use it to motivate them during the off season.

By the way, I think Murray is a good QB. It’s the Coaches who did not vote .him All-SEC.

I hope our offense takes it personal. Our young, inexperienced O Line will go from our Achilles to our strength. They grew up right before our eyes. Gurley and Marshall will be beasts. I personally am fine with Murray but believe in Mason if Aaron wants to test the NFL. Go Dogs!

Maybe Aaron Murray has finally shaken the “big game jitters”? He should come back for another year if he wants a chance at being drafted high. Even if he does come back, Richt should find every opportunity to get the backup QB(s) some playing time next year, rather than padding Murray’s stats against creampuff teams.

Time for all Dogs who are eligible to come back to win it all. It may be that all our bravado about first rounder on this team could be premature, as evidenced by how few guys we have to make first team conference honors at end of season.

QB in the SEC has ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT WINNING, not high flying, circus act, empty yards.

The A&M QB and the Alabama QB earned ALL SEC for obvious reasons. Johnny Football s up for the Heisman and McCarron WON the SEC.

Murray? He has done noting of merit, while at UGA, beyond TDs and yards vs cupcakes. Hs list of accomplishments over three years s no reason to make him ALL SEC this year, we lost our TWO biggest games and in one,Murray was horrific.

Stats are for geeks. Wins garner recognition. I don’t care if Murry re-writes every passing record in UGA history and spends all his free time “watching tape” as we always hear. He doesn’t WIN when the stakes are high. He’ll be a solid coach one day. Agree with his omission from All-SEC teams.

David Greene didn’t set a lot of records…except for WINS!!! See his resume and you’ll see what is most important to SEC coaches…and presumably fans

Awards and honors
SEC Freshman of the Year (2001)
SEC Championship Game MVP (2002)

Ogletree and Gurley should have been 1st team selections. Note to Ogletree…don’t miss a quarter of the season due to off-season transgressions and you’ll reap the rewards you deserve. Good luck in the League.

As long as the SEC Championship game is played in ATLANTA, and if UGA is in it, they have home field advantage. Don’t argue ticket amounts, just look around at the facility, outside the dome, and the entire city itself, it’s “dressed” in red and black. I was there and was dressed in my R&B too. It was apparent that the Tide rolled into Atlanta and won on the road. Oh-I’m a eighth gen Atlanta boy, a UGA alum, and my first family member graduated from UGA in the late 1800’s so I know of which I speak. SEC ball rules, all the other drools.

Oh, and by the way…Murray is a great QB, but Manziel beat Alabama and McCarron beat UGA. By sound logic, even though Murray is great, he still finishes third. If Murray had beaten Bama at the end, who knows?!

I don’t think an SEC coach could look anyone in the eye and honestly say they wouldn’t take Gurley as their primary back out of all SEC RBs this season. Zander Ogletree could have racked up 200 yards vs the Dawgs in the SEC title game with the holes that were opened up for Lacy and Yeldon by their O-line.

Gurley’s season was WAY more impressive than that of Crowells last season…unlucky for TG that Johnny Football happens to be a freshman and he’ll be without Freshman of the Year hardware.

I think AM deserves better. Agree w/2d team for Tree and rambo. both had good numbers but ,much of that was against lesser opponents. they didn’t do well in SC and AL games. Too many missed tackles and missed games as well. the past always comes back to haunt folks.

It is way too early to talk about next year, but the SEC East will be in great shape if all of the players eligible to return at their schools do return. UF, UGA, SC, LSU,Bama and possibly Vandy will all be loaded if that happens.
It was a great season. Merry Christmas to all and good luck to all SEC Teams in their respective Bowl Games.

Dawg4life…..

Before becoming an expert on the Florida running back…..maybe learn how to spell his name.

GILL…..IS…..LEE…….Gillislee. And he was…..with no doubt…..the most important offensive player on the Florida Gators this year….and he became the first 1,000 plus RB in many years for the Gators.

Is he as gifted as Gurley. NO. But he more than deserves the recognition he is gettting this year. He is also going to be a good pro. I hope the Falcons draft him. Not only is he a very good runner….he can really block…..and he catches the ball well out of the backfield…..and I think the coaches recognized all that about him.
