ATHENS – Jarvis Jones was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year by The Associated Press and he and freshman Todd Gurley were the only Bulldogs named first-team All-SEC as the news organization’s annual all-conference team was released on Monday.
Six Bulldogs in all were represented in the All-SEC voting by a panel of sportswriters.
Jones has accumulated 77 tackles, including 22.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks, one interception, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 11 games this season. Jones sat out two games with injuries. He enters the Jan. 1 Capital One Bowl as the NCAA active leader in forced fumbles per game and tackles for loss per game. Jones’ 22.5 tackles for loss this season ranks second in school history behind David Pollack’s 23.5 in 2002. Pollack’s single-season sack record is 14.
Gurley became the first UGA true freshman to be named first-team, All-SEC since A.J. Green in 2008. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound native of Tarboro, N.C., 1,260 yards rushing and scored 17 touchdowns this season. He led all SEC running backs with 96.9 rushing yards per game and is just the second true freshman in school history to rush for 1,000 yards.
Senior nose guard John Jenkins, junior linebacker Alec Ogletree and senior safety Bacarri Rambo were voted to the second team, while junior quarterback Aaron Murray was named honorable mention All-SEC.

A Ogletree is the top defensive strong safety in America heading into nfl draft.
The bogus stats by Murray earned no credibility . I sure hope Murray leaves this year, for what I dont know, just leave giving our team hope for 2013.

Somewhat surprised that Aaron Murray, the quarterback with the highest efficiency rating in the entire college football world, only rates honorable mention among SEC quarterbacks. Granted, Manziel had a spectacular year, but Tony Dungy commented on recent NFL show that Aaron Murray would be his pick among current college quarterbacks if he was still in the NFL.

Jones is a great story. I hope he does well in the NFL. I don’t think that there is any QB on the team who would have done as well as Murray. The kid took a beating all year, including that last punch from the Bama player. Richt lost the Bama game with his poor game management, not Murray, and Richt should have been man enough to admit it. .

Game Changer: Murray leave? Are you kidding me? We should pray he stays. While the reports on Hutson Mason are good, Murry is tested and he is a winner. It’s really a terrible record these past two years huh…21-5? This kid is the prime reason Ga was even in the SECC game. If the last pass were not tipped by AL All American CJ Mosley in a great individual effort, GA wins and then what would you be saying, eh? Get a life and stop being so negative about young men who pay their tails off for our school every week during the fall.

Game Changer, do some research before making moronic posts. SI rates Murray as the 6th best qb in the upcoming draft if he leaves early, and a potential 1st rounder if he stays. But you are in good company amongst the other Murray bashers on here who know nothing about talent. Murray outplayed AJ McCarron and drove the team 85 yards on the last drive that just fell short.

So Arron Murray accomplishes all this (below) and is only Honorable Mention? Johnny has one great college football season and finishes #1? Did not see Johnny in the Title Game driving his team downfield with 68 seconds. Murray and the Dawgs got the shaft here friends.
Murray has passed for 3,466 yards and 31 touchdowns this season, becoming the first quarterback in SEC history to throw for 3,000-plus yards in three straight seasons. He ranks first all-time in school history with 91 career touchdown passes, and has thrown for 1,302 yards with 15 touchdowns and just one interception in the last five games. Murray is second in the NCAA in passing efficiency.

Our achilles heel showed in the game Saturday. Our inability to take runnners head on showed. We are great at running people down. But sometimes you have to put your facemask on the numbers and we didn’t do that. Not fauling effort, it was great but we did not get off blocks or fill holes. You can’t turn from blockers and we did. Look at the tape. That is why we struggled with teams that went right at us.

Still angry about the BCS deal. Northern Illinois, Louisville, and Wisconsin playing in BCS bowls……and LSU, Georgia, and South Carolina are not. Just stupid. Would have loved to have seen a Florida and Georgia rematch in the Sugar, LSU and Oregon in the Rose, and South Carolina vs. Kansas State in the Fiesta. But those games would have been fun to watch….and the BCS just can’t have that happen.

Tampa Gator you think Tree takes plays off? If that’s the case I guess he would have doubled anyone else in tackles if he had played more games as he lead the team in tackles in only 9 games. He is the best LB in the country not named Jones. That’s not to take anything away from your players who made it.
However, I do find it difficult to believe your running back is near the same rank as either of Alabama’s.
I find it incredulous that AL’s QB was ahead of Murray.
I find it incredulous that UF is ranked ahead of UGA when they had the same pre-season record, yet UGA won head to head. The only reason UF doesn’t have two losses is because they didn’t play in the SEC championship game. That said, it is certainly no blaming UF’s that they received the good fortune. No doubt Murray is very talented. Problem is he hasn’t taken the Dogs to the promised land yet. Don’t know if he can. In that regard, he reminds me of Matthew Stafford. Stafford was talented enough to go first in the draft. At Georgia, he couldn’t take the Dogs to the promised land either. Can’t argue with those facts. We want championships. 12 seconds away from a shot at the NC. Only took 30 years to get to that point again. Hope it’s not 30 more.

He gave me the mental toughness and the high you get when you know you just made a play or light somebody up. But for me I never had the size it took. I know with a lot of money on the table it will be hard for some underclassmen say no. And everyone has their own unique situation. When you see words like “moral victory” and “pride” over and over to describe the UGA fans’ feelings about the outcome of the game, it’s a clear sign than they’ve accepted mediocrity and irrelevance.
So, let’s get the Kool-Aid flowing again and start rebuilding the annual myth that CMR will win championships in Athens!

I think Barnhart and friends that graduate from the Georgia school of journalism have spiked the Kool-Aid. Georgia is the most penalized team in the SEC yet every big game the announcers are highlighting the miscalls of the other team. In the Florida game or this Alabama game eye gauging or cheap hits on the quarterback. The one drive of any success in the first half was given life support on a fake punt, yet Murray was given credit for the success of the drive that turned into a touchdown. How was this game any different from the Georgia/ Florida game except poor Florida had two other top ten opponents the two weeks before the Gator Bowl show down? You hear any difference given to Florida, or comment made if Georgia had had the schedule of Fla. or SC or even the original schedule they had drawn in the beginning, playing Alabama in the regular season, that they might not even be here in the first place. Nope it is all about five yards and cheap shots from Alabama who will be national champions for the third time in four years pretty soon. 1980 is a very long time ago, even a SEC championship is a faded memory.

To win a game like we lost Saturday, we have GOT to fill our program up with more Jarvis Jones type players….And they are sitting right here under our nose in this state. Yes, I know we get OUR share, but we have got to get the 4 or 5 5 star players who are leaving this state every in to Athens. Over a 3 year recruiting cycle, that’s 15-18 ” special” players like Jarvis in the program. THAT would be qa huge difference. Hold you breath for next years D. Hope we get 3-4 special freshman who can help.

The quarterback does not win or lose a game on his own. I don’t understand how anyone can criticize Aaron Murray and his playing. He can’t do anything about how tall he is. Alabama’s O-Line is simply bigger than ours, making it difficult for our D-line. And Murray has nothing to do with our D-line. (Remember, he is on offense.)

By the way how is it South Carolina, Georgia, and LSU are in sorry a— bowls and they collectively loss only 5 games??? We had alot of great individual talent on defense this year and everyone is bemoaning the fact that it is all either graduating or leaving for the NFL. But even with a tougher schedule next year I think the Dawgs will still be pretty good. Why? We still have alot of talent on the D…young talent but talent nonetheless. Our entire offense minus TK and Brown will be returning… including a pretty good O-line that will get even better and we are recruiting some hosses. Even if Murray goes pro we have Hutson Mason who has been in the system 3 years now. We could put up some big numbers next year… even against good defenses. So I’m not buying the we blew our only chance deal.
The Dawgs may even get back next year..if the young pups get up to speed quickly.

Murray was preseason the #1 QB in the SEC.
I think he Would have been 1st or 2nd Team IF Johnny Football didn’t do what he did.
I think A.J. McCarron got the nod for 2nd Team because he has been a big game winner (for 2 years) more than Murray.
I don’t think Mccarron is really better than Murray it was more on their Team’s records than their Stats.

John Football will win the Heisman. No problems there.
McCarron being 2nd team in front of AM is, as Nick Saban would say, a crying shame. McCarron is a game manager with the benefit of a road grater offensive line and a power running game. Georgia relies on AM to win games for them and he has far less talent around him.
Also, the stats. AM got scrooged.
AM haters should kill themselves now. He could be fairly criticized for big game performance before last Saturday. Those criticisms should be silenced now.

Jeff,
You also don’t see Murray in New York where Manziel will be accepting the Heisman Trophy. And to correct you a hair, he was second in efficiency, not first. Manziel threw for the same amount of yards, rushed for 1,200 more, and they had the same number of interceptions, plus he also beat #1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I’d say they got it right, so go take a timeout, let your head get all the cobwebs out, and then maybe you’ll quit being such a pathetic homer and realize the great season Manziel had.

I was listening to a local sports talk show here in Jax yesterday, and the guys made an interesting point about how things have changed in the BCS era, and that’s the fact that we’ve now come to a point where if you aren’t in the NC game or a BCS Bowl game, that somehow it’s a disapointing season. He asked the question, “Since when did winning 10 or 11 games become a disapointment” To his credit, he actually admitted that the media and the fans’ ability to be more vocal on outlets like this blog, facebook, twitter, etc… have a lot to do with it. To put things in perspective the BCS has been around since 1998 – 14yrs, that means only 28 teams have had the ability to even play for the title. There have been at least 115 D-1/FBS teams in that time span or roughly 1600 different teams fielded in that time frame. 1600 and only 28 were able to rise to the top. Not to mention with the exeception of a very few that went wire to wire without a loss, most of those 28 had to have some miracle play, or major upset occur just to get there. Even this year we had to have 2 improbable losses happen just to even set the SEC championship game up for the right to go to the title game. My point is this, any season any team can get to double digit wins should be held up as special. Right now Out of the top 25 there are 20 teams with 10+ wins, 10 of which have 11+ (which includes Kent St and N.Ill) and only 2 have 12. That’s out of 121 teams folks.
3 of the 11 win teams are from the SEC, 6 of 10 win teams are from the SEC, and the lowest ranked team currently of those 6 is SC at 10. This indeed was a special year for the SEC and the league as a whole showed this year more than any other in recent history just how dominant a league it truly is.
Go Dawgs beat Nebraska,
Go SEC Teams, lets run the table in the bowls!!

Yep, look at all that “respect” would you! GA gets two players total on both the offense and defense. How is it possible to play for the SEC championship with just two players on the first team? One would think also to hear some AJC writers and other media talk that Mark Richt would have been “Coach of the Year”. Hmmmm, guess he gets no appreciation either. This may sound a little strange coming from a longtime GA fan, but here’s hoping Nebraska lays about 70 on the DAWGS. Maybe that will get somebody’s attention! You Bama fans knocking Gillislee. First, he did not run behind that Bama line. Second, he is the first 1,000 plus rusher at Florida since the early 2000’s. Thirdly, he ran for those 1,000 plus yards on a team that had little or no passing game. He is a great blocker, catches the ball exceptionally well out of the backfield….and made on big play after another on a Florida team that was 11-1 and finished #3 in the BCS. If Gillislee ran behind that Bama line, he would have gained over 2,000 yards. He is an outstanding RB that will soon be playing and doing very well in the NFL. With that said, nothing against any of the Bama backs. They are excellent as well. But Gillislee is the total package out of the backfield as a RB and he proved that this year….ran all over FSU….and I really loved him as a RB for that alone.

Here is the letter I just sent Greg McGarity, who I believe relies on FACTS and reason, unlike you so called lunatic fans, that support and embrace LOSING the biggest games of the year EVERY year. IDIOTS. 3 friends also sent letters similar to this, but with a little different wording, as they are their own letters. Finally, we are uniting to get Richt out of town….Anyways here’s my letter to McGarity…
Hello Sir,
Mr. McGarity I have tremendous respect for yourself and the entire University of Georgia. I am a proud 2007 graduate, and a successful chef who contributes to the athletic association on an annual basis. I just want you to know that I have never been so ashamed by some of the so-called fans and alums of this University than I have since the loss to Alabama. I am at a loss for words as to why so many alums are proud of the loss, as well as the coaching staff. Correct me if I am wrong but how is giving up 520 yards of offense, including 350 rushing, something to be proud of. Especially, considering we have 9 NFL caliber players on our defense. I did not agree with extending Grantham and giving him a raise, and I still don’t. I just want you to realize FACTS about the program (that I know you know, but want to reinforce). Despite similar recruits, facilities, resources, and financial status, Nick Saban has only lost 5 games in the last 3 years, while Mark Richt has lost 13 games since 2010. The answer is clear as day…. Alabama is a well-coached, well-run, well-conditioned program with top notch atheletes striving to be their best. Georgia is under coached, under prepared, and can’t play with teams of similar stature in the SEC. It is evident by Mark Richt’s 1-11 record against teams that finished the season ranked since 2009. How can you justify paying 3 million a year for this ineptitude sir? I understand he is a good man with clean, Christian values, but are we not trying to win Championships. The nail in the coffin is the simple fact that Mark Richt has not delivered a Championship of ANY kind since 2005, 7 LONG years ago. How much longer do we have to wait sir? Despite top 10 recruiting classes every year, he fails to win A SINGLE big game (outside of the florida game, in which Georgia was given 6 turnovers to work with), and Alabama is yet another in a LONG list of failures in big games by this regime. I ask you humbly to please help the REAL supporters of UGA football, and bring us a staff that can not only compete every year, but win championships on at least a somewhat consistent basis. I was embarrassed of Mark Richt and the University at his childish outburst at the post SEC championship interview room, in which Richt stormed out of the room like a toddler have a temper tantrum, at a truthful evaluation from a reporter asking him about his meager record in meaningful games. I hope you evaluate THOROUGHLY the state of this coaching staff and the direction of this football program, which hasn’t won a championship in over 7 years, despite top 10 recruiting classes and millions of dollars from investors like myself being funneled into the athletic program. Thank you for listening, sir.
Sincerely,
Keith Thompson, Alum 2007
