Georgia vs. Nebraska in Capital One Bowl (UPDATED w/ comments)

A day after coming up five yards short of a trip to Miami for the national championship game, Georgia’s football team learned Sunday that it will play a bowl game in a different Florida city.
The Bulldogs (11-2) will play Nebraska (10-3) in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on Jan. 1 in a matchup of the losers of the SEC and Big Ten championship games.
While Georgia lost the SEC title to Alabama 32-28 on the final play of a stirring game, Nebraska endured an embarrassing 70-31 loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game.
The Capital One, which holds first choice of SEC teams after the BCS games, had been rumored to be considering Texas A&M and its Heisman Trophy candidate, quarterback Johnny Manziel. But after Georgia’s strong performance against Alabama, the bowl opted to take the Bulldogs, who dropped from No. 3 to No. 7 in the final BCS standings released Sunday night.
Notre Dame and Alabama remained Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, and will meet in the national championship game on Jan. 7 in Miami. Alabama survived an SEC title game that saw the lead change hands five times and ended with Georgia on the Crimson Tide’s 5-yard line as time ran out.
Florida moved up to No. 3 in the BCS standings Sunday and, as the second highest ranked SEC team, will go to the Sugar Bowl to play Big East co-champ Louisville.
Other BCS games will match Pac-12 champion Stanford vs. Big Ten champ Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, Big 12 co-champ Kansas State vs. BCS No. 4 Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl and ACC champ Florida State vs. Mid-American champ Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl. In the latest controversial chapter of BCS history, Northern Illinois (12-1) received a BCS berth by being ranked in the top 16 (No. 15) and ahead of at least one champion of an automatic-qualifying conference.
After Florida passed Georgia in the rankings, UGA was locked out of a shot at a BCS game because of a rule allowing no more than two teams from a single league to get BCS bids, a rule that Alabama coach Nick Saban sharply criticized after beating the Bulldogs. Saban called it “a crying shame” and “ridiculous” that Georgia would be excluded from a BCS invitation.
Actually, Georgia appeared in danger of falling farther down the bowl pecking order than the Capital One. But that’s where the Bulldogs landed after some late scrambling among bowls triggered by Northern Illinois earning a BCS berth at the expense of Oklahoma.
“If we weren’t going to be in a BCS game, this is the location we wanted to be,” Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said Sunday night.
But McGarity added, “There’s no question — there’s absolutely no question — that we are deserving of a BCS bid. … There’s no question we played great the last half of the season and just to see the way we laid it on the line (Saturday) proved that we’re right there along with the best in college football.”
Capital One Bowl CEO Steve Hogan called the selection of Georgia “an easy decision” in the end.
“No offense to Texas A&M,” Hogan said. “I think they’ve had a fine first year in the conference, a 10-win team. And we have an opportunity to get an 11-win division champion, a few yards away from a national championship.
“The most important thing to our committee was, Georgia deserved this trip. And we’re fortunate to have a team, really, that is of BCS quality.”
After the Capital One selected Georgia, the Outback, which had the next pick from the SEC East, chose South Carolina to play Michigan. And the Cotton, with the next pick from the SEC West, chose Texas A&M to form a marquee matchup against surprisingly available Oklahoma.
The Capital One Bowl will be played at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day in Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium and will be televised on ABC.
Georgia coach Mark Richt said he foresees no problem in getting the Bulldogs to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the SEC title game and their national championship aspirations.
“I think playing Nebraska is going to get everybody’s blood pumping,” Richt said. “There aren’t many teams in the history of Georgia football that have ever won 12 games in a season and it’s going to mean something to them. I know our guys want to finish on a high note.”
Georgia and Nebraska have met only once previously in football. Georgia lost to the Cornhuskers 45-6 in the 1969 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
This will be Georgia’s sixth appearance in the Capital One Bowl. The Bulldogs are 3-1-1 in the Orlando game, most recently defeating Michigan State there at the end of the 2008 season.
In Saturday’s loss to Wisconsin, Nebraska’s defense allowed 640 total yards, including 539 yards rushing. Against Alabama, Georgia’s defense surrendered 512 yards, including 350 rushing.

Just left the Knoxville paper site. Read the blogs under the Story about their coaching hunt…..The jest of the article was is Tennessee relevant anymore to hire a top notch coach. didn’t realize they haven’t finished in the top 25 final poll since 2007. Ouch. They are struggling with the search. Gundy at Olk St is latest target.

Mighty Gators #3 and heading for the Sugar Bowl, georgia #7, going to one of the who cares bowls. This proves we are the more respected program still, and will continue to be. The best part is this was your peak, as far as you could get, next year it is back to 7-5 and the Independence Bowl. It is for the best, you would have been the SEC team that would have blown the streak, you just don’t have what it takes to win the big games.

So many whiners on here! We got screwed! We should have been in a BCS bowl! Blah, blah, blah! We didn’t win when we should of won. Period. If we had won on Saturday night, there would have been no denying anyone a trip to a BCS bowl and National Championship game. We didn’t win when we needed to win. If Tech had won their game against Florida State (had a chance to), hell, they would be in a BCS bowl, but they didn’t win and they aren’t going to a BCS bowl. There are only a certain number of slots and there are rules everyone plays by to get those slots. Everyone knows it up front and at the beginning of the season, so…..next time, just win the game and all will be fine. Until then, quit whining, enjoy the chance to win 12 games and end this very good season on a very high note.

A really, really good Louisiana Tech team didnt get a bowl invite. They finish 9-3 and dont go bowling and youve got teams with 6-6, or 7-5 going to bowls. That is complete crap seeing as how Tech is going to a bowl. Thats so screwed up.

Not True get your facts straight. La Tech said they wanted to see what their Bowl Game Options were and the Bowl they were offered said Sorry but you took too long to say yes so they took another team.
La Tech screwed themselves by wanting to WAIT on a Better Bowl Game to ask them.

It is a two edge sword for UGA…the SEC office can creampuff UGA into the championship game with a rigged schedule but the flip-side of that is that you can’t pull a Georgia and blow that chance because now your resume doesn’t qualify UGA for much of anything.
UGA should be thankful that the CapOne did not want a rematch of the Neb-SC game or they would be back in Atlanta for the Chik vs an ACC school.

To take into context what Oliver did – you needed to hear his show on Friday. Where he went to great links to talk about how Murray and CMR had not won the big game.
So when he brought this up at the News Conference – okay, that’s fair game. Right up until the point where he ddn’t ‘man up’ that this was his opinion.
He was a coward. You call the Coach ad the QB out on your Radio Show. You call him out in the News Conference – OK. At least you have the guts to say to him what you said to your dwindling radio listeners. But when your challenged by CMR and you back down and put it on what ‘others are saying’ – well your just a coward…
As far as the Nebraska game. I wouldn’t check that one in the win column just yet. Nebraska was embarrassed Saturday night. And UGA left A LOT on the field Saturday. It’s not a good combination. One’s looking for redemption – the other is thinking ‘what if’…

Very simple from the NCAA website …..
“NCAA ranks Georgia’s schedule to this point in 2012 as the 83rd-toughest in the nation. Only seven teams from BCS automatic-qualifier conferences are behind the Bulldogs on the list. ”
UF was ranked 8th and SC was ranked 19th.
UGAs SEC office padded schedule got you to the championship game but did not help you on the national level.

While your team was sitting at home eating bonbons, our team was at least fighting for a chance to go to the big game. So you got a BCS bowl game big Whoop!
We’re playing storied Nebraska and you’re playing Louisville. When you have Louisville, and N. Ill, make it to a BCS game it kind of knocks some of the luster off of it. If you’re not in the championship game does it really matter as long as you’re playing on New Year’s day?
Say what you want Muschamp is CMR’s b*tch and you guys can’t stand it. Get ready to lose a few more in a row to the Dawgs.
I hope everyone is thinking like you in that we “peaked”, keep thinking that. Granted we do lose a lot of talent to the NFL this year, but there’s a lot of talent behnid that hasn’t had a chance to play.
Plus if Murray comes back for his senior year (good chance he will), we will bring back the entire offense that AVERAGED 38pts a game minus 2 WRs, one of which we lost weeks ago.
Proud of the Dawgs and how they fought. Proved they belonged.

The BCS is bogus with Georgia, Oklahoma out of a BCS bowl and 2014 will be a joke too. Imagine it was 2014 right now. We would have Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida (who did not win its division, nor play in a conference championship game) (So it hurts a team if they are in a championship game) and then Oregon ( who did not win its division, nor play in a conference championship game) So one can argue that it is better not to be a loser in a championship game and just sit at home and rest and you then will have a chance at a National Champiosnhip. What a fiasco that will be. What a farce.

Nebraska D may be worse than Tech’s – it won’t be much of game but at least we can enjoy nuances once we are up by 4 or 5 scores. BCS really dropped ball this year – NIU and Louisville in BCS – what a travesty.

just to help out those who have never crossed a sideline….the rules have been there for several years to protect any defenseless player from this type hit….Referees are assigned to the QB and the footage clearly shows an official in clear line of sight..they failed totally in their responsibilities and should be dealt with by the conference. the truth is an example will go a long way (Judge do we really have to hang him..Only till he’s dead says the Judge) ALA ’s 90 should be removed or withheld from the NC game with ND by the Univ of Ala No single player loss from on that team will change the outcome of that game what no integrity????..otherwise this will get rewarded instead of being dealt with by the most effective method yet and that is the offensive linemen….that’s why chop blocks were invented and are so effective…..coaches will never give the order but no offensive line should accept that toward their leader on the field….bet those officials would throw a flag for that….after many years of officiating you know ” You can’t call what you don’t see but you can’t be looking in the wrong place or your failure will be obvious” If #90 did that to a vendor in the parking lot he would be facing a felony it was that blatant Kinda like in the early 60’s when Darwin Holt of ALA hit Chick Granning from Tech with a blindside forearm and ruined his face….the discipline was swift and came straight from Coach Bryant and The Admin of ALA….does this deserve any less?

It is what it is. The computers have spoken. Thats just the way that it is this year. Is it fair? No. Is there anything that can be done about it? No we just need to go out and focus on Nebraska and finish what has been a good season for UGA. As for all you really cool people out there talkin shit. Any fan of college football knows what happened saturday night. The best game of college football all season was played. There were two good teams and both could have won. Unfortunately, it wasn’t us but regardless it was a great game b/w 2 good teams and had me on the edge of my seat until the last 4 seconds.
