What they said after SEC Championship game

“Thought it was a great football game. Unfortunately, we ended up on the wrong end of the scoreboard. I think Alabama is a great football team, obviously. I think we’re pretty good, too.”

– Georgia coach Mark Richt

“To be (so close) to making probably one of the greatest comebacks in Georgia history, it stinks (to fall short).”

– Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray

“That’s something you dream of as a little kid, to win the game like that. And it’s just (awful) the way it ended, that’s for sure.”

– Murray

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make a smart play. Instinctively, I grabbed the ball when I probably should have let it go.”

– Georgia wide receiver Chris Conley on his catch that ended the game, five yards short of the end zone

“We kind of had that I-would-not-be-denied attitude out there today. I’m not saying we played our best football game of the year in terms of execution, but the way we were able to run the ball, especially in the second half, was probably the difference in the game.”

– Alabama coach Nick Saban

“This conference will test your mettle. There are a lot of good teams in this conference. We beat a really good team out there today. We really couldn’t handle their pass rush, and it was difficult for us to throw the ball. But you have to give our offensive line a lot of credit for … doing a great job of blocking so that we could run the football … for 350 yards and come back in the game a couple of times.”

– Saban

“He just told me congratulations and that I did a great job running and that it was the best he’s ever seen me run.”

– Alabama running back Eddie Lacy on what former Crimson Tide star Mark Ingram said to him after the game, in which Lacy ran for 181 yards

“I’m going to tell you that I think it’s a crying shame if Georgia doesn’t get to go to a BCS bowl game. …. They played a tremendous game out there today. That was a great football game by both teams. … So, I mean I think it’s ridiculous (if Georgia doesn’t go to a BCS bowl such as the Sugar, Fiesta or Orange) . I watch teams playing that are 7-5 that are talking about they might go to a BCS game because they won their (conference) championship? Something’s not right here. … I don’t think it’s fair to the Georgia players, coaches and their institution if they don’t go to a BCS game.”

– Saban

“When I saw that No. 9 running down the field with a blocked field goal, I said, ‘Yeah, that’s a problem.’”

– Saban on Alec Ogletree’s run that gave Georgia a 21-10 lead in the third quarter

“I told them I was disappointed (in the outcome), but I wasn’t disappointed in them. That was the main thing. I told them they were warriors in there, and I was proud of them.”

– Richt on what he told his team after the game

That was impressive by their people up front. We were just not able to stop it.”

– Richt on Alabama’s running game

Great job Dawgs. Coach Friend, take the challenge to get our line that good before Gurley leaves. Saban mostly classy in public, different than what his detractors say

This one is going to hurt for a long time…Alabama deserves credit for coming back when they were down 21-10 after the blocked field goal. They were down by 11 at the six minute mark of the third quarter and didn’t give up. They scored 22 points in 21 minutes….

You people that takes this disgusting loss in stride, as Richt/Murray and others do, were not off of breast milk ’til 3rd grade. This proves again that we will never get to where our state athletics produce with Richt and his nonchalant and actually dumb coaching is still there. Grantham had “fire” until Richt neutered him in the past, but its seems he doesn’t know how to teach tackling. Our staff , sideline players and people on the field act like they have no “killer” instinct. At least the offensive line pushed Gurley in for the TD – our defenders stand and watch vs. hitting head on. Defense should be played north/south – our players “attack” with limp arms at their sides from the side, trying to strip the ball vs. busting ass. Not just them, but our vaunted defensive line was absolutely manhandled. Folks, our boys are weak physically, nearly to a man. I could go on from weak kickoffs, the many blunders of Murray – underthrows for interception, failure to spike ball, again physically overpowered, etc. but this is probably the most stinging loss in 30 years. Really sad -get coaches that know how to reach the next level, use Hutson Mason, keep star GA players at “HOME” and resurrect “Erk” style football or let’s try winning a few more swimming and golf trophies.

Great game with two great teams…..Really hurts that they couldnt quite get it dome> Bama really changed the tide of the game and without Lacey they do win this one. Just an incredible individual effort. Dawgs had a few more mistakes that them..which is to be expected…but they gave it their all and were so close…this one could have easily gone our way….so before everyone starts raising hell just accept the fact that this was a great game…someone has to lose and tonight unfortunately it was Georgia. Love these Dawgs. They are headed in the right direction. I think for sure they are the second best team in the country. After Bama dismantles Notre Dame…not many could argue otherwise. Go Dawgs!!!

I trust this is a lesson learned for the UGA staff. Five Star WR and RB types are wonderful but most games are won by the linemen. The Alabama OL was magnificent tonight.

That the UGA OL was not of that caliber was evidenced by the fact that a true Freshman played RT the whole season. UGA did not have a RT in their program who could beat out a high school player.
That is why UGA lost the game.

Millercodawg – I for one, am proud of the way that our players and coaches fought and played tonight. Sorry you are not.

What I believe got the Dawgs was superior depth. Yeah, the Bama OL is awesome but without depth on the Dline you are going to wear out in the 4th quarter with the type of hitting that they were doing in that game.

I suspect that with another minute on the clock, UGA would have won that game.

collegeballfan. . .You may be the only person who thinks UGA lost because they had a freshman RT, wow? It is not uncommon for true freshmen to start on the o-line or d-line for a lot of programs. If Bama gets Tunsil, he may start next year. Do we need better o-linemen? Yes. Were they the reason we lost? Hardly?

How can anyone criticize players or coaches of a team voted the 3rd best of 2500 . Being in a position to win the SEC championship meant that Georgia and Alabama coaches and players were winners in 2012. To say that a tipped ball made one team a winner and the other a loser is foolish. The tide outscored the dogs in a game played by 2 winners at the dome…by George!

Double dog, you must still be on the breast milk. I can assure you, my parents, my education, and my IQ are far superior to yours. You made my point exactly – a good loser is just that – a pathetic loser. A “good loser” needs to have his mouth on the hind tit where you belong. The state of GA year end and year out produces in the top very few states in quality athletes, but haven’t won the big one in 32 years. If that’s satisfactory to any true UGA fan, that breeds nothing but mediocrity.

Miller – please go tell our defensive players how physically weak they are to their face. I’ll send a cleanup crew to pick up the pieces of your sorry arse when you’re done. Great game from two teams with warriors who played their heart out. To think N. Illinois, or even FSU will be in a BCS game over UGA is pathetic. The national media won’t allow it – but in all likelihood the 6 of the top 7 or 8 teams in tha nation all com from the same conference. (Besides Bama, UGA, FL, SC, A&M, and LSU – there’s Oregon, and maybe ND – but I doubt it).

You people who are so “proud” of the way the team play act as if UGA were some Conference USA school that stood toe to toe w/ the Tide. Unbelievable. NO, that was Georgia, who sends more talent to the NFL than any other college team, yet what do they have to show for it? Absolutely postively nothing!!!!

millercodawg is exactly right w/ his take. UGA does so little w/ so much more than any other school out there. It’s pathetic really. I can say this as a UGA fan but I’ve only been since i’ve moved to the Atl, just over ten years ago.

UGA’s OL actually outplayed Bama’s DL……. after all UGA got over 400 yards of offense and 21 points. . Don’t blame this loss on the OL. They played very well. Refs “no calls” against Bama was the difference in the game – especially the blatant helmet to helmet cheap shot Dial put on Murray which was not penalized. Bama should have been moved back 15 yards and Dial should have been kicked out of the game. Instead because of the “no call” with the ref standing right there watching Bama got a field goal and that was the difference in the game since UGA was within chip shot field goal range at the end of the game. Bama’s OL played great but got away with several blatant holding and pass inteferences that weren’t called. Hopefully after reviewing the cheap shot Dial will be suspended for the championship game.

See people this is what I’m talking about is missing from OUR TEAM get mad and fight – not me but on the field. The Bulldogs lack that under Richt. Personally, I don’t care how many fans accept the second tier of the SEC – I want to win. As far as Tom or drbasic, again I’m just an old fart that takes UGA continuously falling short in games the “really” count, Otherwise, cowardly threats don’t influence me any. Bama’s offense was a lot more impressive than their defense even if they did turn the ball over and were stopped 6 plays in a row at the goal line. UGA missed a long field goal but Bama made one after a blatant helmet to helmet cheap shot against Murrray by Bama DL Dial wasn’t called.. That was the difference in the game . UGA got screwed by a ref that was 10 yards away and looking directly at the play.

Talked to ERK daily…..do I want another Championship….you bet, but in now way will i knock down these young men and coaches who especially today played their hearts out and i hope they left it all on the field and can now say “NO REGRETS”

@millerco, I am not sure what your obsession with breast milk is or what it has to do with football. Nobody is satisfied with a heartbreaking loss, but I can tell you that head coaches don’t get fired after their team comes up 5 years short of playing for the national title. And if you want to argue that they should, then you ARE showing your inferior intellect. I suggest that you go hang out with some Alabama fans from the trailer park and poison some trees or put a brick through your head coach’s window after he wins 10 in a row but loses to Auburn.

I’m not buying Richt’s explanation on the decision not to spike the ball at the end. Bobo said there was “confusion”, so why not simply spike it and then use the 25 seconds you’re allowed to get settled and organized for one or two shots at the end zone and the win???

millercodawg

December 2nd, 2012

DUH Beach, nail on the head – that’s what smart coaches do, spike the ball and would maybe have had 3 chances in the EZ. That should have been a given. Similarly, earlier in the game any player at this level to let a punt over his 10 yard line go – no we fair catch closer to the goal line. Fundamental stuff and we don’t have it.

Georgia played one helluva game! Defeat is never easy and there will be many who will point out that Georgia should have done this or that. Well I think until you’ve played the game or coached at this level you can be frustrated but leave the playing and coaching to those who do it. Games are always easy to critique after the game has been played.

Grantham should have known his D was going to get tired and should have been rotating DL and LBs more….there is no help for Mike Bozo….and Mark Richt is a good coach, but not great.

I understand millercodog….even if his politics are off, he has it right. UGA fans accept mediocrity to easily for me.
