Notebook: Nick Saban believes Georgia deserves to be in BCS Bowl

From all indications, Georgia will end up in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, after losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the Bulldogs should be heading to a BCS bowl.

Georgia's Mark Richt and Alabama coach Nick Saban embrace after Saturday's dramatic finish in the SEC Championship game. (AP photo)From all indications, Georgia will end up in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, after losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the Bulldogs should be heading to a BCS bowl.

“I’m going to tell you what, I think it’s a crying shame if Georgia doesn’t go to a BCS bowl,” said Saban, who will take Alabama to its third national championship game in four years. “They should get to go to a BCS bowl game. They played a tremendous game out there today … and could have won at the end just as soon as us. It came down to the last play. So, I mean, it’s just ridiculous.”

Official bowl selections do not come out until Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. with the annual selection show on ESPN. But most projections have No. 4-ranked Florida, which finished the season 11-1 but to the Bulldogs, heading to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, one of the five BCS bowls.

But if anything, Saban believes the SEC should have three teams in the BCS mix.

“I watch these teams that are 7-5 that are talking about they might go to a BCS game because they won their championship?,” Saban asked incredulously. “Something’s not right here. I don’t know what people think of the SEC… . I just don’t think it’s fair to the Georgia players, coaches and their institution if they don’t go to a BCS game.”

Georgia coach Mark Richt was interviewed before Saban made his remarks in the main interview area at the Georgia Dome. He agreed, but was less emphatic in his stance.

“Well, it’s up to whoever is deciding and I’m not in charge of that,” he said. “But do I think we are worthy of a BCS Bowl? Yes I do. I do.”

Bowl destinations debated

Where the SEC Championship game loser lands is always a matter of great debate. The league put in safeguards a few years ago to make sure the its runner-up doesn’t drop below Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Bowl.

In this year’s scenarios, it was coming down to the Cotton Bowl and the Capital One Bowl for the loser. Based on the SEC’s bowl agreements, the Capital One gets first selection among the non-BCS teams. Late word Saturday night was that the Orlando bowl had decided to go with Texas A&M and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Johnny Manziel.

If so, that leaves the Cotton to choose between Georgia and LSU. The Chick-fil-A desperately wants the Tigers to come to Atlanta to face Clemson. That would be a much more favorable matchup for the bowl and for the Bulldogs, who open next season on the road against Clemson.

BCS or bust

Had Georgia punched its ticket for the BCS Championship, a huge contingent of the Bulldog Nation would have gone along for the ride.

According to Tim Cearley, Georgia’s director of ticket of operations, the Bulldogs had already doubled their BCS bowl allotment. Applications for Hartman Club contributors – aka, the Bulldogs’ renewable season tickets – for Georgia’s possible bowl destinations went out shortly after the win over Florida. By Friday’s deadline, more than 35,000 tickets had been requested for the Jan. 7 matchup against Notre Dame, Cearly said. Only 17,000 tickets are available for the respective teams.

Between the demand for BCS tickets and those for the SEC Championship game, Cearley and UGA’s ticket office have been pushed to the brink.

“It’s been pretty crazy, but it’s been a fun week,” Cearly said.

Georgia is expected to have tickets available for both the Cotton and Capital One bowls. Call 706-542-1231 or go to georgiadogs.com for information.

Last game heroics?

It’s considered a foregone conclusion that Saturday was Jarvis Jones’ last shot of winning an SEC championship or playing for a BCS title. Though he’s only a junior, he has been projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL draft by several analysts.

“I don’t, man; it’s not decision time for me,” said Jones, who had six tackles and two sacks Saturday. “Right now I’m going to focus on the rest of our season. We’ve still got a couple more weeks.”

There are a few other underclassmen that will have a decision to make between now and the NFL’s declaration deadline in early January. Chief among them is junior inside linebacker Alec Ogletree, who led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles on Saturday, and junior quarterback Aaron Murray.

“I’m not thinking about that right now,” Murray said afterward. “That’s too far in the future. I can’t get this game out of my mind right now.”

They said it

“Hindsight’s easy. I definitely would if I had to do it over have him spike it. We work on that a lot where we get in a formation and try to get a play called really quick and try to give us three chances to get the ball in the end zone. It just didn’t work out that way.”

– Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, taking the blame for the decision not to spike the ball after Arthur Lynch’s first-and-goal catch at the Alabama 8 with 15 seconds to play.

Etc… .

Alec Ogletree returned blocked field goal 55 yards for a touchdown to give Georgia a 21-10 lead at 6:31 in the third quarter. Cornelius Washington recorded the block; the second field goal blocked by Georgia this season and first returned for a touchdown against Alabama since Kentucky in 1997. . . . Georgia converted its first successful fake punt since 2005 early in the first quarter. Tight end Arthur Lynch, manning the up-back position, took the snap and threw a 16-yard pass to senior cornerback Sanders Commings for a first down at the Alabama 20-yard line. It was Commings’ first career catch… . Tight end Jay Rome caught his second career TD pass. … Murray moved past Peyton Manning into second on the SEC list for  career TD passes with 90. . . . Former Georgia quarterback David Greene got the biggest ovation during the on-field introduction of “SEC Legends” shortly before kickoff.

why does a team get penalized for not winning their conference championship. Florida gets to play in the sugar bowl and they lost to georgia. the two best teams played in the game tonight. it is not right to punish the loser. It is an extra game. it is not a schedule game. conference championship games define the champion and should not penalize a team that came in second.

Why does the AJC even report this? We lost the game. We are a bunch of losers. Who cares what bowl we go to? We had our shot at a Nat’l Championship and blew it. We have to understand we are just a “middle of the pack” program. Since Richt has been coaching at UGA, Alabama has leapfrogged us. LSU has won 2 Nat’l Championships. Auburn has gone undefeated in 2 different seasons with 1 Nat’l Championship. Florida has leapfrogged us from the Zook years to win 2 Nat’l Championships and will probably win one under Muschamp before we can contend for a Nat’l Championship again. South Carolina has beaten us 3 years in a row. We need to stop worrying about consolation prizes and focus on taking care of business and winning championships.

Classy of Saban to say what he did. I appreciate it, and I agree with him.

He knows that it easily could have been his team that dropped out of the BCS, which would have been just as unfair as UGa not getting the BCS bid. The whole idea that Northern Ill, Rutgers, Louisville or even Ga Tech is flirting with a BCS bowl bid simply shows how flawed the system is.

Tough loss. Hard to believe with all those rushing yds Ala was never assessed a holding penalty. Hard to believe they were only penalized twice. Penalties are part of the game, Dawgs had some untimely ones which hurt including 15 yd unsportsmanship on the kickoff following Ogletree’s TD setting Ala up at the 39 instead of 24. Shortened the field for the Tide.

Saban has surpassed The Bear. He is dominating the game in spite of scholarship reductions which supposedly have spread the talent. Saban is a far more dominating force than Bear. Question is can he do something Bear never could, Bear failed miserably each time when he played Notre Dame in a National Championship. Hard to see Saban failing.

It is amazing to me that a Tide Fan has the gall to come on here and trash talk after witnessing one of the best college football games of all time, a game they came within an eyelash of losing. We in the SEC may all hate each other during the season – and life vicariously through the success and dissapointments of the teams we choose to follow – but damn man – at the end of the day that was two great football eams leaving it all out on the field. Truth be told, Florida deserves better than just the Sugar Bowl themselves; they played more Top 15 teams than Bama, UGA, and ND COMBINED… so if anybody has a complaint, it’s Florida.

And Nick can give it a rest with the conference or division champions argument; only a hypocrite would say those things just 1 year after getting to play for and win a NC even though his own team didn’t win the SEC or Western division themselves.

UGA gave up a lot of yards and so did Bama…….. the refs “no calls” was the difference in the game. Saw one blatant helmet to helmet cheap shot on Murray with the ref standing right there watching. Tide player Dial should have been kicked out of the game and Bama should have been moved back 15 yards. Instead the ref ignored the obvious and Bama ended up with a field goal.. Saw at least 6 blatant holding penalties by the Bama OL that were not called and several times pass interference that should have been called against Bama. Hopefully the cheap shot on Murray will be sent in to the SEC office and Dial will be suspended for the BCS champ game. The ref should be reassigned to high school games.

Florida got out played and out coached by UGA and they ranked behind them and should still be ranked behind them next week. Florida doesn’t have the offense to stay with Bama. Chip,

Who was that idiot reporter who asked Richt how he felt about him and Murray “not being able to win the big one??”LOL. While I agree w/ the media scribe (1-11 versus Top 10 comp says it all), it was definitely the WRONG time to ask it. And then the media guy has to hide behind “well I heard it was others who had been saying that..” What a tool. Richt even said to the guy, “if that’s what you’re saying I’ll answer the question, but if it’s what you hear ‘others’ are saying then I don’t care about that…” That was awesome. Richt finally showing some emotion out there. Even coming back after his presser was over and saying, “..if you guys think our guys weren’t playing their tails off out there, then you’re just crazy..” or something to that affect. Maybe if he showed that kind of fire during games they would be better than 1-11 over the past few years against top 10 comp and would have won todday. Of course he could have had Murray spike the darn ball and received at least two more chances to score. Unbelievable.

Maybe Ga. should have spiked the ball, but still would have gotten only 2 plays off. They should have been two plays but for the flukey play that ended the game. Great hustle by the Bama player that tipped the ball and Conley was going as hard as possible to win the game. Should not have caught the ball, but that is hindsight, and would have gotten one more play with 4 seconds left. Seems that Saban mismanaged the clock himself earlier in the game, but all I can say is that I saw one of the best football games of my life last night and am really proud of the Dawgs. Georgia should not be penalized for losing a close game to #2. Florida is #4 and should still be #4 after this game. You lost to Georgia – you aren’t better than Georgia – and Florida should not be playing in the BCS game.”

And you’re an idiot… By your logic south carolina should be in a better bowl than UGA. they have the same record and smashed you head to head??? Shouldn’t they get a better bowl than UGA?? It’s unfair!! You’re not better than USC! Let’s see, florida beat TAMU on the road, LSU, USC and FSU on the road and BARELY lost a game to UGA while turning the ball over 6 times and twice in the endzone. but you think a team that went 1-2 vs top 12 BCS is more deserving of a BCS bowl? Based on what? Getting pounded for 350 yards on the ground by a Bama team that isn’t as good as last years? UGA ought to call up and thank the SEC schedule makers for getting them to that game in the first place. Just because you are gifted a schedule that includes 3 tough games and you win only 1 of them doesn’t mean you deserve a top tier bowl game… if you played florida’s schedule you would have had 3-4 losses….

UGA should remain No. 2 in the BCS poll. They just barely lost the SEC Championship game, which is an extra game. They beat Florida, who is likely to move ahead of UGA because of the extra loss unfortunately.

BTW, ND had a big advantage in finishing No. 1 in the regular season and not playing a conference championship game: They got to rest their players longer, and avoid any potential injuries from the extra game. As I was watching Bama and UGA players go down, I was thinking that whichever team won, they might lose some key players and be completely different for the BCS Champioship game.

Roll Tide, but also Go Dawgs! UGA played a heck of a game – it was a shame that one of them had to lose. Best wishes to UGA in their bowl game, and hope that both teams are back here next year in the 2013 SEC Championship!

To the entire dog nation (AH’s too):
The fact is you controlled your own destiny. If you won last night, you play for the BCS Championship Game against Notre Dame and have a chance to win your first National Championship in 32 years. If you lost, you knew that you would fall behind Florida in the BCS rankings and not be eligible for a BCS bowl (no conference gets to send more than two teams). You knew this for over a week.
Everyone in college football knows that the BCS system is a crap shoot and that’s why it is being shelved in 2 more years. It sucks now, but it is what it is-an “everybody wins a trophy” type of system. While wanna bees like Louisville etc., get rewarded for underachievement, georgia needs to go to the Cotton Bowl, beat Texas by 30 and finish up a legitimate top 5 team! Think of where you came from just a few short years ago!
I could not be more proud of your players and coaches. They are top notch, though I think Grantham should have made adjustments and lined up Jarvis Jones in the middle instead of outside in the 2nd half. Same run defense, just more inside stunts and different looks for Alabama’s massive offensive line to contend with.
Nevertheless, Grantham is a great coach and georgia prepared for and played a tremendous game in the national spotlight. They won the hearts of many outside of the dog Nation (use Google and see for yourself). Coach Richt, Bobo, Grantham and company have brought you all the way back to national prominence. You can now compete NATIONALLY on the field and in the living room of the best recruits in America!
However, though I have gained a lot of respect for the Georgia program, I would not hesitate rolling one of you if you bark in my face in public.

I just watched Coach Richt’s interview on ESPN I am a Gator but I have never been prouder of a coach in our conference. Coach Richt showed class and restraint in response to that reporter. I understand that Bulldog Nation is hurting right now, and I understand that they may not go to a BCS bowl and it sucks when the system works against you. But Bulldog Nation the system is what it is and it is flawed. Lets get the 6-6 teams out of the bowls , lets eliminate a bunch of the bs bowls that draw 10k in people,so that teams that deserve a reward at the end of the year get one.
This is one Gator that says hold your head up BULLDOG NATION you have a great coach, great tradition, great fans and you are in the greatest conference in America. Be proud of yourself your young men aquitted themselves very well tonight.

Al;ways the nasty comments about UGA, posted by a lot of idiots for the most part, acting like little children.
You saw a great game for the SECCG and any DAWG fan. although disappointed by the end results, should be darn proud of this team.
The jerks making disparaging remarks about the players or coaches, obviously know very little about the game, and mostly exist to be like a fly in the ointment. Sorry for your sad life, and the disappointment you have with it.
I would have loved to see UGA pull it out in the end, but give Alabama credit as well. They played a great game as well, and the DAWGS have nothing to be ashamed of.
I am certainly not going to look back on this game for years to come, sadly, or think about what could have been. I have two reasons for that.
1. I think UGA will be back next year, and I think the ingredients are there, for the defense to improve even though two All Americans will most likely be gone. Coach Grantham will find a cure for our lack of run defense and we have a solid group of young player both on campus and coming in next year, to do it.
2. I am 63 years old, and if this were the greatest disappointment in my life, I would relegate myself to the same status as some of the negative bloggers on this site and I refuse to dip that low.
In the end, it is a sporting event but it is a small part of a person whole life. I am just so darn proud of these DAWGS and although I know they are down, because this was a tough loss for them, they can bounce back and trounce their bowl opponent and cap off a very good year that way. My guess, is they will finish in the top 5 when the whole season is over, and considering how many schools there are playing college ball, they have nothing to be ashamed of. The coaches, players and assistant personnel deserve the fans admiration and respect.
They have given us a lot of good games and thrills this year. I look forward to 2013, as I believe they will be right ion the hunt again.

“Gators have no offense and the Dawgs proved it. Get back in your Jean shorts and STFU.”

And yet Florida had more passing yards and first downs than UGA in that game… Only thing you really proved was that it took 6 turnovers(2 in the endzone) and a great play by Jarvis Jones in the end to barely win.. if you get 6 turnovers you should win by at least 21…

Be honest with yourselves UGA, you played 3 tough games all year and you lost 2 of them… what in god’s name makes you think you deserve a better bowl than capital one? Are you hanging your hat on the fact that you kept the score close against a good but not great Bama team???? You had 3 games to define your season and you lost 2 of them. Florida had 5 games to define their season and they won 4 of them. You had the easiest path to the SECCG and you got there and lost. Be proud you got there. And your beef shouldn’t be with Florida, Florida DESERVES to play in a BCS game. They are the MOST deserving team of playing in a BCS after playing the number 1 toughest schedule in the entire country. Your beef should be with the BCS itself for allowing teams that are slightly above .500 to play in BCS games.

My issue with GA fans has aways been the unending smack talk. This whole week I read on this site how GA was going to kill AL. I was seeing scores like 42-10. 38-0, 52-14, etc. Now i am not sure if you were trying to be funny or what. You come across to other fans as plain stupid. I’m here to say it was a great game by two great teams. Could have gone either way. To “someone who knows” a hit to the head is not a legal shot. I’m sure there will be ramifications, either a suspension from the championship game or the first game of next season. Agreed that the referee turned a blind eye to obvious Bama infractions…..

Unsportmanslike penalty on Murray was ignored as were several holding plays by Bama’s O-line.

My main question is: Why did we not clock the ball with 15 secs left and 1st and goal. Could’ve run 3 plays for a TD. Do not understand……

Miss Daisy,

No. Three teams from the same conference can’t play in a BCS Bowl game, which the Sugar Bowl is a part of. That’s why it’s been talked about all week, that the loser of yesterday’s game would fall from the national championship game to a lower tier bowl, because Florida was sitting at #4 and the loser of yesterday’s game is definitely going to fall below the Gators in the final BCS rankings. The BCS has never been about being fair for the young student athletes. It’s always been about making money for the bowl comittees and their respective cities. Of course if I hear what’s true – that No. Illinois could make a bowl game if Nebraska falls out of the top 16, that would be hilarious to whatever bowl has to take them. Even if they don’t, we’ll have an Orange Bowl matchup of Florida St. versus Rutgers. Good luck making money on that. Good riddance to the BCS system I say. Of course a 4 team playoff isn’t enough either. We should have at least 16 – 11 conf champs and 5 at-large bids. Every other sport, college or pro, has a true playoff. It’s time for the university president cartel to get w/ the times. They can make more money then they would ever dream of and it would be fair for everybody. Somebody or something needs to make it happen already.

The SEC should start four bowl games. Let the top four teams in the SEC play the top four team in the other confrences. We have the money, let’s spend it. No matter who we invite they will go to another bowl to keep from playing SEC top four teams. The top SEC team will play the best of the rest. The second best team in SEC will play the next best conf. champ, etc.

Yesterday at the Georgia Dome was the real national championship. If Bama goes to Miami and

Awesome game by the Dawgs. Nothing to be ashamed of. Gutsy game they played.

But I will say this- SEC team getting at-large BCS bowl instead of SEC Champ loser is not unusual. The Dawgs got the Sugar bowl in ‘07 over the SEC Champ Loser (UT), Tennessee got the Fiesta Bowl in ‘99 over the SEC Champ user (UF). LSU got Sugar ‘06 over SEC Champ loser (AK).

Yes, a couple years back when #1 & #2 ‘Bama & Fla played in the SEC, the loser got the Sugar, but those two teams we’re far better than the rest of the SEC slate at that time.

It may not seem fair, but Florida had the same record as ‘Bama & UGA, tough schedule. They earned the Sugar bowl (if they get it).

Oliver asked the question ESPN had been talking about for the last 7 days, and right after, YET ANOTHER LOSS TO A TOP 25 RANKED TEAM, seemed like a legit question, kind of like the sideline reporters who ask the tough questions.

I wonder, what does Richt say to the fans who see him as INCOMPETANT and NOT ABLE TO BEAT A TOP 25 RANKED TEAMS more than ONCE out of the last 12 games?

Richt just can’t win more than 5% of those kind of game anymore. That’s the difference between a Mark Richt, and a Nick Saban.

CousinIt

December 2nd, 2012
10:22 am

Thought it was TELLING how defensive Richt got when Oliver linked the
1-11 vs. ranked teams record to Aaron Murray. Seemed like the thought had NEVER OCCURED to Mark Richt that his QB COULD BE THE REASON FOR THE 1-11 VS. RANKED TEAMS RECORD.

ESPN has put up Murray’s numbers vs. top 25 ranked teams, and Murray’s numbers vs. everybody else, and it’s a STARK CONTRAST. ESPN seems to think Murray’s OVERALL numbers HIDE Murray’s performances in BIG GAMES vs. top 25 ranekd teams. His td’s, accuracy, interceptions, are all so drastically different vs. top 25 ranked teams. Some QB’s just can’t hangle a big game pressure, Murray is one of those QB’s, 1-11 record vs. ranked teams, there’s no doubt about that.

I hope Murray goes Pro. It’s time for a new QB at UGA.

Fun game to watch. But when you aren’t wearing blinders you can see a clearer picture. Florida played 5 of their 12 games against teams ranked in the top 10. Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M, and FSU. Record 4-1. (And using Bulldog logic, barely lost to UGA and should have won that game)

UGA played 3 of their 13 games against top 10 teams. South Carolina, Florida, and Bama. Record 1-2. UGA was the better team on a Saturday in Jacksonville (barely). But when you look at the total body of work, Fla is clearly the better team over the course of the entire season!

[...] Saban certainly lobbied for Georgia last night, and he said it’s ridiculous that Georgia wouldn’t get that second BCS [...]

Jimmy

10:38 am

I love these “I hope Murray goes pro” comments. He’ll be back next year for sure. He’s barely 6′0 tall. Ever think of WHY all those passes get tipped at the LOS?????? It basically cost them the game yesterday. I know everyone always brings up Doug Flutie or Drew Breeze when talking about shorter QBs, but those two are the exception to the rule. Short QBs just aren’t successful in the league for the same reason why the game was lost yesterday (besides a horrible coaching call not to spike the ball), tipped passes!!

Murray just isn’t an elite QB. I’ve never seen such hollow stats from a QB. He has all of these records, 9,000 passing yards, 80 whatever TDS, but what’s it gotten him?? A 1-11 record versus Top 10 teams??? He didn’t lose them that game last night (as he usually does in big games), but he sure didn’t WIN the game for UGA, which is something that big time QB’s do – take a team on your back and win the darn game!

“How can anyone say the dawgs shouldn’t be in a bcs game.Fix the damn problem and get it right.RTR.”

You can say it because the BCS system says only 2 teams from 1 conference can go… And there isn’t a person in the country who can say UGA has a better body of work over an entire season than Florida. You can say UGA was better than Florida on one saturday. But you can also say USC was better than UGA on one saturday and they have the same record so shouldn’t USC get a better bowl than UGA?? You see where the logic starts breaking down?? Florida was 11-1 and 4-1 vs top 12 BCS teams. UGA is 11-2 and 1-2 against top 12 BCS teams. Florida and Georgia are Co-Champions of the the SEC east with UGA getting the nod because of head to head. UGA should have won the game. That’s the way it works and has worked for many years. Florida would’ve assume the risk of playing that game. They had already played 5 games against top 10 opponents. By luck of the schedule UGA slid by with a relatively easy schedule and won 1 tough game. They have beaten 1 single team in the top 25 this year. Florida is 4-1 against top 10 and has EARNED the right for a BCS. Your problem shouldn’t be with Florida, it should be with the system. Florida played the toughest schedule in the country and lost one tight game in which they turned the ball over 6 times… come on saban, you didn’t even win your division last year and still went to the national title game. you want to cahnge the rules now??

they played #3 Georgia, #7 LSU, #9 Texas A&M, #10 SC and #12 FSU and beat them all save for 4 turnovers in Jaxs. Georgia is 1-2 against top ten teams and their schedule ranked behind 63 other teams

you want some cheese with that whine? In case you didn’t know it games that are lost because of turnovers count just like losses that they are no turnovers. If you remember, Georgia had three turnovers in Jax themselves. On the schedule,we played the one that was given to us,can’t help who we drew out of the west, it rotates yearly, next time we play the exact same SEC schdeule Ole Miss and Auburn may be contenders.

Seems to me that since not all the Conferences that could have teams eligible for BCS Bowls don’t have a playoff…and since those that do – have a playoff – have generally already determined the ultimate ‘ranking order’ of their respective Conferences, that the final selection – other than the National Championship game of course – be made based on overall rankings before said playoff games. In other words, a team that loses in a playoff game should not fall below an idle team – particularly one that they have already beaten – this means you, Gators.

“Florida didnt hand the ball over six times Georgia’s defense forced the turnovers..Based on your logic Florida should be playing for the national title. There were not co champions of the east Georgia won it because they won the crucial game.”

Jarvis Jones forced 2 turnovers on great plays. Driskell made mental mistakes on the others. And yes, Florida is co-champion of the east. does anybody take solace in that fact? of course not but Florida and Georgia are co champions this year according to the SEC. Go check the SEC website if you don’t believe me. Both are number 2. I don’t agree with it but that’s how it works.

I love the comment on how texas A&M is a different team now then when florida played them…. i guess people forget that was Driskell’s first start too on the road in a loud stadium…. was USC a different team too when UGA lost by 4 touchdowns then when they played florida?

Number 1, UGA gave up 350 rushing yards last night. if they didn’t get blocked field goal for a touchdown that game would have been 34-17. Number 2, that’s not one of the better Alabama teams of the past few years. especially on defense. so the fact that uga is pointing to the fact that they kept it close, really speaks volumes. i don’t know if florida would have won last night, but they surely wouldn’t have given up 350 yards on the ground and 500 total yards… that game should have been won by 2 td’s last night…

As much respect as I have for how well UGA played, they do not deserve to go to a BCS game. The SEC has 6 elite teams: 3 from the west (Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M) and 3 from the east (UGA, Florida, and South Carolina). Let’s call these the Big 6. As much talk as there has been about easy and difficult schedules, it turns out every member of the Big 6 played 3 games against other Big 6 opponents, and no one lost out of conference or to anyone else in the SEC. There were 2 teams (Alabama and Florida) who were 2-1 in their Big 6 games, and the other 4 were 1-2. Alabama and Florida also had the two most impressive out of conference wins (Michigan and Florida State). So Alabama and Florida both deserve to go.

Even if you think the SEC deserves 3 BCS slots, you have to decide who amoung the 4 1-2 teams deserves to go. Head-to-head records against tied teams is how this is usually decided. In those games, LSU is 1-0, South Carolina is 1-1, UGA and Texas A&M are 0-1. So LSU would deserve the third BCS slot, but UGA shouldn’t even go above USC. USC won head-to-head, beat a better OOC opponent (Clemson) that UGA did, in addition to having a better record against the 1-2 Big 6 teams.

Nick Saban is wrong – UGA does not deserve to go to a BCS bowl. The do, however, deserve the respect of friend and foe alike for their outstanding performance yesterday.

Of all the teams to whine about SOS. Really Florida? All you needed was ND to lose to USC and you would have back doored your way in the NC game. Who wants to see that? A boring Florida team with no offense lose to Bama 24-0?
I have to agree with Saban and the Dawg fans, the SEC runner up this year should go to a BCS bowl game. No question. However, not at the expense of Florida. I think they earned the Sugar Bowl, but I don’t think that a 7-5 Big Ten Champ should go to a BSC game. It cheapens the BCS and the Bowls. But hey, it not about the games is it? It all about the money.

Yeah I know he should have probably had Murray clock it at the end and try for a couple more plays, but he rolled the dice and try to take advantage of maybe Bama’s defense getting caught on its heels and sticking it in the end zone before they knew what happened. In their only 3 games this year against significant competition, GA produced:

1) a blow out loss by 28 points
2) a narrow win against a good FL team
3) a close loss to a more physical AL team

Sorry but ONE win against significant competitor does not = “deserves to be in a BCS Bowl”…..

As for Chuck Oliver’s question, absolutely unacceptable. Alabama won the game. If not for the tipped ball in the final seconds UGA could have won and played for the National Title. I am taking nothing away from ‘Bama.

“turnovers count just like losses that they are no turnovers”

This has to be the funniest post to date considering it comes from UGA fans who spent the past summer screaming about their SC loss from 2011 as not counting because “..we gave them 28 pts”…

Reality is that the SEC office gerryrigged UGA to the championship game for Richt to get his MNC shot and UGA could not get it done again. Now they will just have to take their earned spot as the third best team in East.

I dont think LSU wouldve shriveled against the mighty dawg defense. LSU had a last second loss to bama and a 14-6 loss to the gators. the pups had a close loss to bama and got emasculated against the ol ball coach. I think LSU wouldve done just fine against georgia. 3:09 pm

Q: What is the difference between Georgia’s Defense and Sand Castles?

A: They both crumble and fall when the Tide Rolls In!!!!!

Roll Tide Baby – Game should not have been close – UGA got lucky by:

1.) Blocking Field goal for a TD (10 Point Swing)
2.) Intercepting Bama in the End Zone (3 Point to 7 Point Swing)
3.) Fake Punt (I thought Jarvis Jones didn’t like Trickery… Let to 7 points and would have been 3).

This makes 16 to 24 points the Dawgs got as gifts…. Bama only got a 3 pt gift off the Murray interception.

If Bama plays UGA 10 times…. Bama wins 9.

Dawgs played the best they could and got the most critical turnovers.

ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDD for all the whining about “UGA would have won if it weren’t for bad clock management”……..

UGA would not have even had a shot if it weren’t for BAD Clock management by SABAN at the end of the 1st half.

BAMA was 1st and goal INSIDE the 5 and had to settle for a field goal because SABAN sat on his timeouts.

Had SABAN not done this, UGA would have been down 8 even with all the GIFTS…..

Get over yourself UGA and the “Moral Victories”….. you are not in the same league as BAMA.

The ONLY REASON you were there instead of the GAYTORS is because the GAYTORS had 6 turnovers….. heck VANDY could have beat FL if they knew they would get 6 turnovers…

Just face it, you have to have the game given to you in order to beat a quality team. BAMA almost gave it to you, but in the end you were just too dumb to take it.

None of the people who were at the game around us said anything close to what you’re saying. ‘Bama won and deservedly so. UGA is every bit as good as ‘Bama. Last night proved that. Unless you are totally brain-dead you know that AL could be just as disappointed as UGA this morning. There is not a single starter from last night’s game that is walking normally this morning in the hotel. I guess you’d know that if you were actually at the game.

I think everyone believe Georgia should be in a BCS bowl…..but the stupid rules for playing in BCS Bowls and the stupid bowl alignments….make that impossible. Thank goodness we only have to put up with this…….BULL CRAP S – - – - for one more year.

But….if it was 2014…….the top four teams would not include Georgia….and would include Florida…..and that would really get Dawg fans mad. There is no perfect system. But you can’t make both SEC championship teams get in…..or the SEC Championship game would be worthless. So you will have to look at the SEC title game as part of the playoff system in the future…..or get rid of the SEC Championship game and have a East and West Champ…..and the one team going further in the playoffs would be awarded the SEC title….or both would share it if both lost in the first playoff game. I think that process should be the process starting in 2014…

Tampa Gator,

Agree with your assesment. The system is not fair, but much of this is due to the greed of the SEC and other conferences.

Yes we can say we beat Florida, but Florida can point to strength of schedule and say they had to play LSU while we played an 0-8 SEC record Auburn team. USC could say that they totally demolished UGA and should go to a better bowl and the only reason they aren’t is because they lost in the last seconds to LSU…. again a team that UGA did not have to play.

The only way to fix this russion roulette of scheduling is being talked about now.

For each SEC division champ to be determined only by they team with the best record against teams in its on division…. so that everyone is measured against the same stick.

Unfortunately for us UGA fans, that would have kept us out of the championship game the last 2 years.

Also unfortunately for us is that if this is implemented, it won’t be until the 2015 season…. as has been well documented, our cupcake schedule blessing is going to be a curse with tougher schedules the next 2 years.

It is a crying shame….this was our best chance in many years. Just hope I am alive to see our chance again (I’m 54!)

This Blog needs to change it’s comment system to a Disqus style comment voting format so the stupid comments don’t show up at the top.

Regardless…. this was one of the best SEC Championship Games ever and it is a CLEAR shame that UGA will not be in a BCS bowl. It’s stupid that a team UGA beat Heads up (Florida) is going to be going to a better bowl game then Georgia.

STUPID.

A clear Florida fan still bitter about LOSING to Georgia. Excuses, excuses… whatever. You lost and this article is about Georgia being shafted and not going to a BCS bowl game while Florida gets to go.

Be thankful you classless loser.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Georgia Bulldogs and Head Coach Mark Richt for a sensational 2012 football season. The DAWGS played great and fell just a few yards short as time ran out in a bid to play for a national championship against Notre Dame.

Football Top Fan eagerly await the start of the college bowl games.

@ Gdawg –

You seem to be directing frustration at the wrong people on this blog. Why are the truly football-saavy GA fans not talking about the REAL reason for the loss.

When was the last time a team rushes for 350 yards in the SEC and lost??

GA may have the better passing attack, but the ground game controls the clock and allows the running team to pound the other team until the defense tires out.

Why was Grantham’s D so unprepared. Could GA not load the box more in the 2nd half? The run defense was terrible and NOT typical of top Tier SEC Teams.

@I am going to be sick,

A Dawg fan for one year? Some of us have been Dawg fans all of our lives and will be Dawg fans until we die. NO MATTER what kind of season they have. Heck… I went to school at UGA during the Ray Goff days when all of the MAJOR talent was there and had to live through that fiasco.

Would you rather have Gene Chizik as a coach? He won a National Championship. Maybe Richt/ Bobo/ Grantham have not won a National Championship but at least they are not an embarrassment to SEC football.

Saban, Miles and Meyer are not going anywhere. Chastising Richt and Bobo is pretty clueless in the big scheme of things. Like somebody better then Richt and Bobo is out there and available?

Clueless.

Don’t be a hater of Richt/Bobo and Grantham just because UGA is getting screwed by the system and playing in the Manure bowl.

Maybe you should be a Notre Dame or some other “we only show up when they win” fan.

Don’t care if we get shafted to the PapaJohn Bowl. Dogs need to compete and finish things the right way with a W. Last thing we need are bunch of Lizards and Techsters laughing at us b/c we lose to some inferior team at some crappy bowl.

We owe ourselves and the SEC more than that so let’s quit all the complaining about not going to a BCS or other marquee bowl game.

I want to compliment Mark Richt and Bobo on teaching the football team each year how you can try real hard and still not be a winner. This is a valuable life lesson for all those who hold the worthless degree from Georgia.

Great article and very classy of Nick Saban..

UGA plays a great game and the National Champs get through by the skin of their teeth to now play against a team in the BCS championship game that is SO LUCKY to even be there.

All of the Florida fans and Richt haters need to go troll somewhere else… It was a great game and Bama won. The point of the article is that now UGA is getting shafted and will end up playing in a Manure bowl.

Far as I’m concerned…. UGA should be in the Sugar Bowl playing Florida even though they already played and UGA won. Barely losing to the National Champs is no reason to be penalized so severely.

well, uga got the screws again. we get a chump bowl against a team that wisconsin just put up almost 3/4 of a 100 spot on after hanging with bama to the very end; all the while the lizards sit on their butts and do nothing and get to go to the sweet bowl. how unfair is that!! i will so glad when the bcs is over and done with. the sweet bowl should be uga’s after their battle with the tide. of course the reptiles think they earned a right to go to orleans. well, its just like the crap in washington, what can you do but sit back and suck on it!!

I was at the game and am a Bama fan. It was an absolute travesty that either team lost. That is the best college game I hve been to and I was at the 2011 BCS game against LSU. It is shame Georgia has been so good the last two years and made it to the SECCG only to face LSU then Bama. A few plays and eeryone would be talking about Georgia defending a NC. Great game, great fans and congratulations on a great year!

Great coaching won this game for Bama and stupid coaching lost it for Georgia.

Take two shots at it…Spike the football or throw it into the end zone.

Those UGA dudes on the UGA defense will soon be making “big money” in the NFL.

And Saban is just so business like. What a coach Alabama has!

dont hate the players hate the rule makers. NIU did what they had to do, Wisconsin same thing.

The Big 12, SEC, PAC 12 and Big Ten should just set up their own championship at the end of the season. They dont need the NCAA to mess it up for them.

I don’t get the logic behind Saban’s and Dawg fans’ argument that UGA deserves a BCS bowl game. It focuses on one game – Florida – and ignores a 28 point loss to USC. Yes, you lost to Bama by just 4 points. So did LSU. And A&M beat them – at their house. The Dawgs have one quality win and fans think that should translate into a BCS invitation. Preposterous.

Georgia needs to be in the Sugar Bowl instead of Florida. Who won the game against Florida? Sorriest matchup of bowls ever. Northern Illinois, Louisville, should not be in these good paying bowls instead of Georgia.

“Georgia needs to be in the Sugar Bowl instead of Florida. Who won the game against Florida? Sorriest matchup of bowls ever.”

can you even begin to start to see how flawed your logic is?? i’ll make it very, very simple for you. The SEC has 6 teams that are all very good and that all played a pseudo round robin tournament with each playing a minimum of 3 games vs the other 5 teams. Bama and Florida went 3-1 vs the other 6 teams, LSU went 2-2 and USC, TAMU and UGA went 1-2 vs the top 6. Does that make more sense to you? Can you now see why Florida would get a BCS bid over UGA? 3-1 vs 1-2? Its the BODY of work, not just one saturday. Now I can make an argument that UGA deserves a BCS bid but that gripe is against the BCS system. What you can’t make an argument on is that UGA deserves a BCS bid over florida based on one game and ignore all the other games that were played. Is this making sense to you?? Also notice that Bama and UGA actually got very lucky this year in not having to play any of the top 3 teams from the opposing division which gave both teams an advantage to get to that game in the first place?? Which is why Florida is 3-1 vs the top 6 and UGA is 1-2 vs the top 6 even AFTER playing the extra game. The top 6 of the SEC are all pretty similar this year and UGA had its shot to win the conference and play for the title. They lost. If anyone has a gripe its Florida at the scheduling that allowed a team like UGA to not play the top 3 in the west and virtually giving them a 1 game season to make the SECCG where UF had to go 5-0 to get there vs top 6… making sense now?? Body of work, not 1 saturday….

If you really think Saban “believes” UGA should be in a BCS bowl, you’re naive. Saban doesn’t give a rat’s @$$ about Georgia, Richt or anyone but himself. It was a patronizing comment by a coach with questionable ethics and Georgia fans should be insulted by it. He’s only trying to make his narrow win look better.

@slim: Yeah, our NFL defense was being held and blocked in the back on every play so that Alabama could get all of those yards! The officiating in that game was the worst I’ve ever seen! They wanted alabama in the National Title game so they made sure it happened! If the refs would’ve been calling that game equally, GA would’ve beat Bama by 3 touchdowns!

December 3rd, 2012

First off, YES, it was a great game. But Bam is not that good this year! Their defense is nowhere near what it has been in years past and they really have no passing game to speak of. Like UGA, Bama benefitted from not having to play ANY of the top 3 teams from the other division this year. And by all accounts UGA should’ve been blown out of that game by 2 touchdowns. They had a blocked FG for a TD which is essentially a 10 point swing. That doesn’t happen and that game is over. So STOP UGA fans talking about how great of a team you are because you kept it close against a decent Bama team that was beat at home by TAMU a few weeks ago. Your team went 1 and 2 against the top teams in the SEC. You benefited from the easiest schedule and 1 one game to get to SECCG. Give me a break! 1-2 vs top 5 teams in the SEC and one of those losses was by 28 points!! What else did you do this year?? WHAT?? Beat a decent Florida team that pretty much handed you the game on a silver platter and you could barely beat them? Please, every UGA and Bama, stop padding each other on the back at how great you are. You’re not, you both had easier schedules than LSU, TAMU, USC and florida. All 6 teams were pretty close this year and could have dropped any game. UGA slipped got EXTREMELY lucky in not having to play ANY of the top 3 teams in the west. That was the ONLY reason they made the SECCG.. and if you think otherwise you’re blind or dumb..
