Notebook: Nick Saban believes Georgia deserves to be in BCS Bowl

From all indications, Georgia will end up in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, after losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the Bulldogs should be heading to a BCS bowl.

Georgia's Mark Richt and Alabama coach Nick Saban embrace after Saturday's dramatic finish in the SEC Championship game. (AP photo)From all indications, Georgia will end up in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, after losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the Bulldogs should be heading to a BCS bowl.

“I’m going to tell you what, I think it’s a crying shame if Georgia doesn’t go to a BCS bowl,” said Saban, who will take Alabama to its third national championship game in four years. “They should get to go to a BCS bowl game. They played a tremendous game out there today … and could have won at the end just as soon as us. It came down to the last play. So, I mean, it’s just ridiculous.”

Official bowl selections do not come out until Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. with the annual selection show on ESPN. But most projections have No. 4-ranked Florida, which finished the season 11-1 but to the Bulldogs, heading to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, one of the five BCS bowls.

But if anything, Saban believes the SEC should have three teams in the BCS mix.

“I watch these teams that are 7-5 that are talking about they might go to a BCS game because they won their championship?,” Saban asked incredulously. “Something’s not right here. I don’t know what people think of the SEC… . I just don’t think it’s fair to the Georgia players, coaches and their institution if they don’t go to a BCS game.”

Georgia coach Mark Richt was interviewed before Saban made his remarks in the main interview area at the Georgia Dome. He agreed, but was less emphatic in his stance.

“Well, it’s up to whoever is deciding and I’m not in charge of that,” he said. “But do I think we are worthy of a BCS Bowl? Yes I do. I do.”

Bowl destinations debated

Where the SEC Championship game loser lands is always a matter of great debate. The league put in safeguards a few years ago to make sure the its runner-up doesn’t drop below Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Bowl.

In this year’s scenarios, it was coming down to the Cotton Bowl and the Capital One Bowl for the loser. Based on the SEC’s bowl agreements, the Capital One gets first selection among the non-BCS teams. Late word Saturday night was that the Orlando bowl had decided to go with Texas A&M and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Johnny Manziel.

If so, that leaves the Cotton to choose between Georgia and LSU. The Chick-fil-A desperately wants the Tigers to come to Atlanta to face Clemson. That would be a much more favorable matchup for the bowl and for the Bulldogs, who open next season on the road against Clemson.

BCS or bust

Had Georgia punched its ticket for the BCS Championship, a huge contingent of the Bulldog Nation would have gone along for the ride.

According to Tim Cearley, Georgia’s director of ticket of operations, the Bulldogs had already doubled their BCS bowl allotment. Applications for Hartman Club contributors – aka, the Bulldogs’ renewable season tickets – for Georgia’s possible bowl destinations went out shortly after the win over Florida. By Friday’s deadline, more than 35,000 tickets had been requested for the Jan. 7 matchup against Notre Dame, Cearly said. Only 17,000 tickets are available for the respective teams.

Between the demand for BCS tickets and those for the SEC Championship game, Cearley and UGA’s ticket office have been pushed to the brink.

“It’s been pretty crazy, but it’s been a fun week,” Cearly said.

Georgia is expected to have tickets available for both the Cotton and Capital One bowls. Call 706-542-1231 or go to georgiadogs.com for information.

Last game heroics?

It’s considered a foregone conclusion that Saturday was Jarvis Jones’ last shot of winning an SEC championship or playing for a BCS title. Though he’s only a junior, he has been projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL draft by several analysts.

“I don’t, man; it’s not decision time for me,” said Jones, who had six tackles and two sacks Saturday. “Right now I’m going to focus on the rest of our season. We’ve still got a couple more weeks.”

There are a few other underclassmen that will have a decision to make between now and the NFL’s declaration deadline in early January. Chief among them is junior inside linebacker Alec Ogletree, who led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles on Saturday, and junior quarterback Aaron Murray.

“I’m not thinking about that right now,” Murray said afterward. “That’s too far in the future. I can’t get this game out of my mind right now.”

They said it

“Hindsight’s easy. I definitely would if I had to do it over have him spike it. We work on that a lot where we get in a formation and try to get a play called really quick and try to give us three chances to get the ball in the end zone. It just didn’t work out that way.”

– Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, taking the blame for the decision not to spike the ball after Arthur Lynch’s first-and-goal catch at the Alabama 8 with 15 seconds to play.

Etc… .

Alec Ogletree returned blocked field goal 55 yards for a touchdown to give Georgia a 21-10 lead at 6:31 in the third quarter. Cornelius Washington recorded the block; the second field goal blocked by Georgia this season and first returned for a touchdown against Alabama since Kentucky in 1997. . . . Georgia converted its first successful fake punt since 2005 early in the first quarter. Tight end Arthur Lynch, manning the up-back position, took the snap and threw a 16-yard pass to senior cornerback Sanders Commings for a first down at the Alabama 20-yard line. It was Commings’ first career catch… . Tight end Jay Rome caught his second career TD pass. … Murray moved past Peyton Manning into second on the SEC list for  career TD passes with 90. . . . Former Georgia quarterback David Greene got the biggest ovation during the on-field introduction of “SEC Legends” shortly before kickoff.

I think that was the single-best College Football Game I’ve ever been to in my life. I love my Dawgs but ‘Bama won it fair and square. Good luck in the game against ND…it won’t be anything as hard as this one was.
As for Chuck Oliver’s question, absolutely unacceptable. Alabama won the game. If not for the tipped ball in the final seconds UGA could have won and played for the National Title. I am taking nothing away from ‘Bama.
*****CHUCK OLIVER***** I was at the Georgia Dome for this SECCG. Your question was absurd! I will make it a point to go after all of the sponsors on 680 THE FAN to ensure you are not there. You simply went after UGA’s Head Coach because you don’t like his Christian Values. I hope you enjoy your unemployment. I will start with one of the SEC sponsors who invited me to the game. I will make sure the advertisers on your station are sent a very clear message.

“turnovers count just like losses that they are no turnovers”

This has to be the funniest post to date considering it comes from UGA fans who spent the past summer screaming about their SC loss from 2011 as not counting because “..we gave them 28 pts”…

Reality is that the SEC office gerryrigged UGA to the championship game for Richt to get his MNC shot and UGA could not get it done again. Now they will just have to take their earned spot as the third best team in East.

What’s all the vitriol directed @ “tha kang” for? Now if you’re saying he was a sissy for not owning it, ok, I agree. But if you’re upset @ the question itself…….you’re a homer. It was a completely legitimate question. Look at both murray and richts record in “big games”.

I’m gonna say this right now… I’m dang proud to be a Dawg fan. I’ve always supported Mark Richt but will admit these last few years have doubted him some, NEVER AGAIN! This is the classiest man in football and I’ll stand by him until the end no matter what our record. The way he took up for his team and Aaron Murray after that IDIOT Chuck Oliver questioned his ability to win a big game after they played the best game I can ever remember him coaching was hands down one of the proudest moments I’ve had since he became our coach. To heck with you Chuck Oliver! I understand people trying to gain interest and boost ratings, but your question was ill timed and CLASSLESS! Blake,

You are dead on. This guy Chuck Oliver is so low on the rankings of commentators he had to find a way to get his name out there. For those of you who simply want to make comments about vitriol, you can speak when you actually make it back to the SECCG. And by the way, if you make it to the SECCG, you should not be pushed down below those teams you already beat…like Florida….just sayin’.
** Chuck Oliver asked a pointed question…if he did it on his show on a weekday I probably wouldn’t be happy with it but so be it. Anyone with dignity and class wouldn’t stick a mic in a coaches face after a VERY heavily debated game and ask this question. I don’t expect some of you on here to understand that. You’re right, gdawg, I wish LSU had actually not gifted the game to bama. A game inwhich we actually outplayed them and didnt give up 270 flippin’ rushing in the whole game, much less 2 quarters a la the pups. I dont think LSU wouldve shriveled against the mighty dawg defense. LSU had a last second loss to bama and a 14-6 loss to the gators. the pups had a close loss to bama and got emasculated against the ol ball coach. I think LSU wouldve done just fine against georgia. I wouldnt have predicted a blowout like we did to you last year, but LSU is better than georgia. STop living off of your title that was won when many pup fans werent born and then get back to the rest of the sec.

Hey Geaux,

I have been all for hiring John Gruden or Mike Leach for the past few years. I don’t disagree with the assessment that our coaching has not been up to Les Miles or Nick Saban for the past several years. Our talent is as deep if not deeper than any SEC school, so yes we should have already won 3-4 national titles over the past 10 years.
I don’t recall you saying any of your comments after UGA won 10 games this past year. LSU wasn’t even as close as UGA was against ‘Bama and ya’ll played them at home. I didn’t come on here after the B-Tigers lost giving some classless comments to you.

When you can make it back to the SECCG again, come on back and talk. You couldn’t even win the WEST. I know…I know, the WEST was so STRONG this year (AU, MS ST, MS, ARK, LSU,). That’s a tough schedule you got. UGA played SC (with Lattimore), FL, TN. East = West. It’s equal.

A Riddle

December 2nd, 2012
3:09 pm

Q: What is the difference between Georgia’s Defense and Sand Castles?

A: They both crumble and fall when the Tide Rolls In!!!!!

Roll Tide Baby – Game should not have been close – UGA got lucky by:

1.) Blocking Field goal for a TD (10 Point Swing)
2.) Intercepting Bama in the End Zone (3 Point to 7 Point Swing)
3.) Fake Punt (I thought Jarvis Jones didn’t like Trickery… Let to 7 points and would have been 3).

This makes 16 to 24 points the Dawgs got as gifts…. Bama only got a 3 pt gift off the Murray interception.

If Bama plays UGA 10 times…. Bama wins 9.

Dawgs played the best they could and got the most critical turnovers.

ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDD for all the whining about “UGA would have won if it weren’t for bad clock management”……..

UGA would not have even had a shot if it weren’t for BAD Clock management by SABAN at the end of the 1st half.

BAMA was 1st and goal INSIDE the 5 and had to settle for a field goal because SABAN sat on his timeouts.

Had SABAN not done this, UGA would have been down 8 even with all the GIFTS…..

Get over yourself UGA and the “Moral Victories”….. you are not in the same league as BAMA.

The ONLY REASON you were there instead of the GAYTORS is because the GAYTORS had 6 turnovers….. heck VANDY could have beat FL if they knew they would get 6 turnovers…

Just face it, you have to have the game given to you in order to beat a quality team. BAMA almost gave it to you, but in the end you were just too dumb to take it.

UGA gave up a ton of yards all season between the 20’s. Even FL Int’l ran for 300 yards….it was between the 20’s. Only an idiot would tire their defense out by making them stress on EVERY down. I am surprised @ your comments. I was at the game last night and the ‘Bama fans were pretty cool. None of the people who were at the game around us said anything close to what you’re saying. ‘Bama won and deservedly so. UGA is every bit as good as ‘Bama. Last night proved that. Unless you are totally brain-dead you know that AL could be just as disappointed as UGA this morning. There is not a single starter from last night’s game that is walking normally this morning in the hotel. I guess you’d know that if you were actually at the game.

I think everyone believe Georgia should be in a BCS bowl…..but the stupid rules for playing in BCS Bowls and the stupid bowl alignments….make that impossible. Thank goodness we only have to put up with this…….BULL CRAP S – - – - for one more year.

But….if it was 2014…….the top four teams would not include Georgia….and would include Florida…..and that would really get Dawg fans mad. There is no perfect system. But you can’t make both SEC championship teams get in…..or the SEC Championship game would be worthless. So you will have to look at the SEC title game as part of the playoff system in the future…..or get rid of the SEC Championship game and have a East and West Champ…..and the one team going further in the playoffs would be awarded the SEC title….or both would share it if both lost in the first playoff game. I think that process should be the process starting in 2014…

Tampa Gator,

Agree with your assesment. The system is not fair, but much of this is due to the greed of the SEC and other conferences.

Yes we can say we beat Florida, but Florida can point to strength of schedule and say they had to play LSU while we played an 0-8 SEC record Auburn team. USC could say that they totally demolished UGA and should go to a better bowl and the only reason they aren’t is because they lost in the last seconds to LSU…. again a team that UGA did not have to play.

The only way to fix this russion roulette of scheduling is being talked about now.

For each SEC division champ to be determined only by they team with the best record against teams in its on division…. so that everyone is measured against the same stick.

Unfortunately for us UGA fans, that would have kept us out of the championship game the last 2 years.

Also unfortunately for us is that if this is implemented, it won’t be until the 2015 season…. as has been well documented, our cupcake schedule blessing is going to be a curse with tougher schedules the next 2 years.

It is a crying shame….this was our best chance in many years. Just hope I am alive to see our chance again (I’m 54!)

You seem to be directing frustration at the wrong people on this blog. Why are the truly football-saavy GA fans not talking about the REAL reason for the loss.

When was the last time a team rushes for 350 yards in the SEC and lost??

GA may have the better passing attack, but the ground game controls the clock and allows the running team to pound the other team until the defense tires out.

Why was Grantham’s D so unprepared. Could GA not load the box more in the 2nd half? The run defense was terrible and NOT typical of top Tier SEC Teams.

Would you rather have Gene Chizik as a coach? He won a National Championship. Maybe Richt/ Bobo/ Grantham have not won a National Championship but at least they are not an embarrassment to SEC football.

Saban, Miles and Meyer are not going anywhere. Chastising Richt and Bobo is pretty clueless in the big scheme of things. Like somebody better then Richt and Bobo is out there and available?

All of the Florida fans and Richt haters need to go troll somewhere else… It was a great game and Bama won. The point of the article is that now UGA is getting shafted and will end up playing in a Manure bowl.

Far as I’m concerned…. UGA should be in the Sugar Bowl playing Florida even though they already played and UGA won. Barely losing to the National Champs is no reason to be penalized so severely.

Congratulations to earning the distinction of having one of the stupidest comments ever made on a blog article.
