From all indications, Georgia will end up in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, after losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the Bulldogs should be heading to a BCS bowl.

Georgia's Mark Richt and Alabama coach Nick Saban embrace after Saturday's dramatic finish in the SEC Championship game. (AP photo)From all indications, Georgia will end up in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, after losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the Bulldogs should be heading to a BCS bowl.
“I’m going to tell you what, I think it’s a crying shame if Georgia doesn’t go to a BCS bowl,” said Saban, who will take Alabama to its third national championship game in four years. “They should get to go to a BCS bowl game. They played a tremendous game out there today … and could have won at the end just as soon as us. It came down to the last play. So, I mean, it’s just ridiculous.”
Official bowl selections do not come out until Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. with the annual selection show on ESPN. But most projections have No. 4-ranked Florida, which finished the season 11-1 but to the Bulldogs, heading to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, one of the five BCS bowls.
But if anything, Saban believes the SEC should have three teams in the BCS mix.
“I watch these teams that are 7-5 that are talking about they might go to a BCS game because they won their championship?,” Saban asked incredulously. “Something’s not right here. I don’t know what people think of the SEC… . I just don’t think it’s fair to the Georgia players, coaches and their institution if they don’t go to a BCS game.”
Georgia coach Mark Richt was interviewed before Saban made his remarks in the main interview area at the Georgia Dome. He agreed, but was less emphatic in his stance.
“Well, it’s up to whoever is deciding and I’m not in charge of that,” he said. “But do I think we are worthy of a BCS Bowl? Yes I do. I do.”
Bowl destinations debated
Where the SEC Championship game loser lands is always a matter of great debate. The league put in safeguards a few years ago to make sure the its runner-up doesn’t drop below Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Bowl.
In this year’s scenarios, it was coming down to the Cotton Bowl and the Capital One Bowl for the loser. Based on the SEC’s bowl agreements, the Capital One gets first selection among the non-BCS teams. Late word Saturday night was that the Orlando bowl had decided to go with Texas A&M and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Johnny Manziel.
If so, that leaves the Cotton to choose between Georgia and LSU. The Chick-fil-A desperately wants the Tigers to come to Atlanta to face Clemson. That would be a much more favorable matchup for the bowl and for the Bulldogs, who open next season on the road against Clemson.
BCS or bust
Had Georgia punched its ticket for the BCS Championship, a huge contingent of the Bulldog Nation would have gone along for the ride.
According to Tim Cearley, Georgia’s director of ticket of operations, the Bulldogs had already doubled their BCS bowl allotment. Applications for Hartman Club contributors – aka, the Bulldogs’ renewable season tickets – for Georgia’s possible bowl destinations went out shortly after the win over Florida. By Friday’s deadline, more than 35,000 tickets had been requested for the Jan. 7 matchup against Notre Dame, Cearly said. Only 17,000 tickets are available for the respective teams.
Between the demand for BCS tickets and those for the SEC Championship game, Cearley and UGA’s ticket office have been pushed to the brink.
“It’s been pretty crazy, but it’s been a fun week,” Cearly said.
Georgia is expected to have tickets available for both the Cotton and Capital One bowls. Call 706-542-1231 or go to georgiadogs.com for information.
Last game heroics?
It’s considered a foregone conclusion that Saturday was Jarvis Jones’ last shot of winning an SEC championship or playing for a BCS title. Though he’s only a junior, he has been projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL draft by several analysts.
“I don’t, man; it’s not decision time for me,” said Jones, who had six tackles and two sacks Saturday. “Right now I’m going to focus on the rest of our season. We’ve still got a couple more weeks.”
There are a few other underclassmen that will have a decision to make between now and the NFL’s declaration deadline in early January. Chief among them is junior inside linebacker Alec Ogletree, who led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles on Saturday, and junior quarterback Aaron Murray.
“I’m not thinking about that right now,” Murray said afterward. “That’s too far in the future. I can’t get this game out of my mind right now.”
They said it
“Hindsight’s easy. I definitely would if I had to do it over have him spike it. We work on that a lot where we get in a formation and try to get a play called really quick and try to give us three chances to get the ball in the end zone. It just didn’t work out that way.”
– Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, taking the blame for the decision not to spike the ball after Arthur Lynch’s first-and-goal catch at the Alabama 8 with 15 seconds to play.
Etc… .
Alec Ogletree returned blocked field goal 55 yards for a touchdown to give Georgia a 21-10 lead at 6:31 in the third quarter. Cornelius Washington recorded the block; the second field goal blocked by Georgia this season and first returned for a touchdown against Alabama since Kentucky in 1997. . . . Georgia converted its first successful fake punt since 2005 early in the first quarter. Tight end Arthur Lynch, manning the up-back position, took the snap and threw a 16-yard pass to senior cornerback Sanders Commings for a first down at the Alabama 20-yard line. It was Commings’ first career catch… . Tight end Jay Rome caught his second career TD pass. … Murray moved past Peyton Manning into second on the SEC list for career TD passes with 90. . . . Former Georgia quarterback David Greene got the biggest ovation during the on-field introduction of “SEC Legends” shortly before kickoff.

Georgia proved themselves a much better team than I thought they were.Though they lost, they’ve done nothing to be ashamed of. After Alabama puts an end to the Irish uprising, the Dogs should end the season as the second ranked team in the country. It seems obvious that they deserve a BCS bowl invitation.

Maybe Ga. should have spiked the ball, but still would have gotten only 2 plays off. They should have been two plays but for the flukey play that ended the game. Great hustle by the Bama player that tipped the ball and Conley was going as hard as possible to win the game. Should not have caught the ball, but that is hindsight, and would have gotten one more play with 4 seconds left. Seems that Saban mismanaged the clock himself earlier in the game, but all I can say is that I saw one of the best football games of my life last night and am really proud of the Dawgs. ND get ready for your beatdown as the SEC is going to win yet another national championship.

“Florida got out played and out coached by UGA and they ranked behind them and should still be ranked behind them next week. Florida doesn’t have the offense to stay with Bama. Georgia should not be penalized for losing a close game to #2. Florida is #4 and should still be #4 after this game. You lost to Georgia – you aren’t better than Georgia – and Florida should not be playing in the BCS game.”
And you’re an idiot… By your logic south carolina should be in a better bowl than UGA. they have the same record and smashed you head to head??? Shouldn’t they get a better bowl than UGA?? It’s unfair!! You’re not better than USC! Let’s see, florida beat TAMU on the road, LSU, USC and FSU on the road and BARELY lost a game to UGA while turning the ball over 6 times and twice in the endzone. but you think a team that went 1-2 vs top 12 BCS is more deserving of a BCS bowl? Based on what? Getting pounded for 350 yards on the ground by a Bama team that isn’t as good as last years? UGA ought to call up and thank the SEC schedule makers for getting them to that game in the first place. Just because you are gifted a schedule that includes 3 tough games and you win only 1 of them doesn’t mean you deserve a top tier bowl game… if you played florida’s schedule you would have had 3-4 losses….

UGA should remain No. 2 in the BCS poll. They just barely lost the SEC Championship game, which is an extra game. They beat Florida, who is likely to move ahead of UGA because of the extra loss unfortunately.
BTW, ND had a big advantage in finishing No. 1 in the regular season and not playing a conference championship game: They got to rest their players longer, and avoid any potential injuries from the extra game. As I was watching Bama and UGA players go down, I was thinking that whichever team won, they might lose some key players and be completely different for the BCS Champioship game.
Roll Tide, but also Go Dawgs! UGA played a heck of a game – it was a shame that one of them had to lose. Best wishes to UGA in their bowl game, and hope that both teams are back here next year in the 2013 SEC Championship!

To the entire dog nation (AH’s too):
The fact is you controlled your own destiny. If you won last night, you play for the BCS Championship Game against Notre Dame and have a chance to win your first National Championship in 32 years. If you lost, you knew that you would fall behind Florida in the BCS rankings and not be eligible for a BCS bowl (no conference gets to send more than two teams). You knew this for over a week.
Everyone in college football knows that the BCS system is a crap shoot and that’s why it is being shelved in 2 more years. It sucks now, but it is what it is-an “everybody wins a trophy” type of system. While wanna bees like Louisville etc., get rewarded for underachievement, georgia needs to go to the Cotton Bowl, beat Texas by 30 and finish up a legitimate top 5 team! Think of where you came from just a few short years ago!
I could not be more proud of your players and coaches. They are top notch, though I think Grantham should have made adjustments and lined up Jarvis Jones in the middle instead of outside in the 2nd half. Same run defense, just more inside stunts and different looks for Alabama’s massive offensive line to contend with.
Nevertheless, Grantham is a great coach and georgia prepared for and played a tremendous game in the national spotlight. They won the hearts of many outside of the dog Nation (use Google and see for yourself). Coach Richt, Bobo, Grantham and company have brought you all the way back to national prominence. You can now compete NATIONALLY on the field and in the living room of the best recruits in America!
However, though I have gained a lot of respect for the Georgia program, I would not hesitate rolling one of you if you bark in my face in public.

I just watched Coach Richt’s interview on ESPN I am a Gator but I have never been prouder of a coach in our conference. Coach Richt showed class and restraint in response to that reporter. I understand that Bulldog Nation is hurting right now, and I understand that they may not go to a BCS bowl and it sucks when the system works against you. But Bulldog Nation the system is what it is and it is flawed. Lets get the 6-6 teams out of the bowls , lets eliminate a bunch of the bs bowls that draw 10k in people,so that teams that deserve a reward at the end of the year get one.
This is one Gator that says hold your head up BULLDOG NATION you have a great coach, great tradition, great fans and you are in the greatest conference in America. Be proud of yourself your young men aquitted themselves very well tonight.

Al;ways the nasty comments about UGA, posted by a lot of idiots for the most part, acting like little children.
You saw a great game for the SECCG and any DAWG fan. although disappointed by the end results, should be darn proud of this team.
The jerks making disparaging remarks about the players or coaches, obviously know very little about the game, and mostly exist to be like a fly in the ointment. Sorry for your sad life, and the disappointment you have with it.
I would have loved to see UGA pull it out in the end, but give Alabama credit as well. They played a great game as well, and the DAWGS have nothing to be ashamed of.
I am certainly not going to look back on this game for years to come, sadly, or think about what could have been. I have two reasons for that.
1. I think UGA will be back next year, and I think the ingredients are there, for the defense to improve even though two All Americans will most likely be gone. Coach Grantham will find a cure for our lack of run defense and we have a solid group of young player both on campus and coming in next year, to do it.
2. I am 63 years old, and if this were the greatest disappointment in my life, I would relegate myself to the same status as some of the negative bloggers on this site and I refuse to dip that low.
In the end, it is a sporting event but it is a small part of a person whole life. I am just so darn proud of these DAWGS and although I know they are down, because this was a tough loss for them, they can bounce back and trounce their bowl opponent and cap off a very good year that way. My guess, is they will finish in the top 5 when the whole season is over, and considering how many schools there are playing college ball, they have nothing to be ashamed of. The coaches, players and assistant personnel deserve the fans admiration and respect.
They have given us a lot of good games and thrills this year. I look forward to 2013, as I believe they will be right ion the hunt again.

“Gators have no offense and the Dawgs proved it. Get back in your Jean shorts and STFU.”
And yet Florida had more passing yards and first downs than UGA in that game… Only thing you really proved was that it took 6 turnovers(2 in the endzone) and a great play by Jarvis Jones in the end to barely win.. if you get 6 turnovers you should win by at least 21…
Be honest with yourselves UGA, you played 3 tough games all year and you lost 2 of them… what in god’s name makes you think you deserve a better bowl than capital one? Are you hanging your hat on the fact that you kept the score close against a good but not great Bama team???? You had 3 games to define your season and you lost 2 of them. Florida had 5 games to define their season and they won 4 of them. You had the easiest path to the SECCG and you got there and lost. Be proud you got there. And your beef shouldn’t be with Florida, Florida DESERVES to play in a BCS game. They are the MOST deserving team of playing in a BCS after playing the number 1 toughest schedule in the entire country. Your beef should be with the BCS itself for allowing teams that are slightly above .500 to play in BCS games.

To “someone who knows” a hit to the head is not a legal shot. I’m sure there will be ramifications, either a suspension from the championship game or the first game of next season. A lot will depend on the players classification status,if he’s of senior status he’ll miss the national championship game or possible early NFL entry as well.

Agreed that the referee turned a blind eye to obvious Bama infractions…..
Unsportmanslike penalty on Murray was ignored as were several holding plays by Bama’s O-line.
My main question is: Why did we not clock the ball with 15 secs left and 1st and goal. Could’ve run 3 plays for a TD. Do not understand……

Miss Daisy,
No. Three teams from the same conference can’t play in a BCS Bowl game, which the Sugar Bowl is a part of. That’s why it’s been talked about all week, that the loser of yesterday’s game would fall from the national championship game to a lower tier bowl, because Florida was sitting at #4 and the loser of yesterday’s game is definitely going to fall below the Gators in the final BCS rankings. The BCS has never been about being fair for the young student athletes. It’s always been about making money for the bowl comittees and their respective cities. Of course if I hear what’s true – that No. Illinois could make a bowl game if Nebraska falls out of the top 16, that would be hilarious to whatever bowl has to take them. Even if they don’t, we’ll have an Orange Bowl matchup of Florida St. versus Rutgers. Good luck making money on that. Good riddance to the BCS system I say. Of course a 4 team playoff isn’t enough either. We should have at least 16 – 11 conf champs and 5 at-large bids. Every other sport, college or pro, has a true playoff. It’s time for the university president cartel to get w/ the times. They can make more money then they would ever dream of and it would be fair for everybody. Somebody or something needs to make it happen already.

The SEC should start four bowl games. Let the top four teams in the SEC play the top four team in the other confrences. We have the money, let’s spend it. No matter who we invite they will go to another bowl to keep from playing SEC top four teams. The top SEC team will play the best of the rest. The second best team in SEC will play the next best conf. champ, etc.

Awesome game by the Dawgs. Nothing to be ashamed of. Gutsy game they played.
But I will say this- SEC team getting at-large BCS bowl instead of SEC Champ loser is not unusual. The Dawgs got the Sugar bowl in ‘07 over the SEC Champ Loser (UT), Tennessee got the Fiesta Bowl in ‘99 over the SEC Champ user (UF). LSU got Sugar ‘06 over SEC Champ loser (AK).
Yes, a couple years back when #1 & #2 ‘Bama & Fla played in the SEC, the loser got the Sugar, but those two teams we’re far better than the rest of the SEC slate at that time.
It may not seem fair, but Florida had the same record as ‘Bama & UGA, tough schedule. They earned the Sugar bowl (if they get it).
