ATHENS – The calendar is about to roll over to December. That means it’s time for national awards to start rolling in for Jarvis Jones.
The first of the year reached the Bulldogs’ junior outside linebacker on Wednesday. The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) made Jones a first-team All-American for the second consecutive year. Jones was a consensus All-American this past season.
A 6-3, 241-pound outside linebacker from Columbus, Jones has accumulated 71 tackles, including 19.5 tackles for loss of 107 yards and 10.5 sacks, one interception, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in only 10 games this season. He is the current NCAA active leader in sacks per game (1.0) with 24 in two seasons and is tied for the lead in tackles for loss (1.6) with 39 through this season and last.
Last season Jone led the SEC and tying for fifth nationally with 13.5 sacks to go along with 70 tackles, including 19.5 tackles for loss.
He has twice been named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Lott IMPACT, Nagurski and Walter Camp awards in 2012 and the SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season following his performances during wins at Missouri and versus #3 Florida.
Jones will likely receive more All-America mentions before the bowl game. He’s also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Rotary Lombardi, Bednarik and Butkus awards and a semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Award.
The Bulldogs have been represented 35 times by 29 different players on the AFCA All-America Team. Tight end Orson Charles was selected along with Jones last season. Georgia’s Herschel Walker is the only three-time AFCA FBS Coaches’ All-American (1980-81-82) in the 68-year history of the team.
Eight of the 25 members of this year’s AFCA All-America team are from the SEC.
Jones has sparked a defense that has given up a combined 19 points (one touchdown, four field goals) during the team’s last three SEC victories. During that span, Jones has tallied 20 tackles, including five sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs (11-1, 7-1 SEC) take on No. 2Alabama (11-1, 7-1 SEC) in the SEC Championship game at Georgia Dome in Atlanta at 4 p.m. (CBS) on Saturday. It will mark Georgia’s second straight trip to the SEC Championship.
“A great challenge, a great challenge,” Jones said on Monday. “A well-respected program all over the nation. They’re capable of doing a lot of things, running, passing the ball. They’ve got tremendous athletes that can take the ball to the house and make big plays when they need to. For us it’s about discipline, and understanding our game plan, and understanding what we’re doing and doing it our best. We’ve got to make plays and get off the field and give our offense a chance to score the ball.”

Bama has no idea what they’re about to face in Jarvis Jones.
Jones wreaked havoc on Florida, Florida, a team that beat 4 top 15 ranked teams, Jones just DOMINATED and BROKE THEIR WILL.
Jones did it again early against Mizzou, when UGA was down so many starters due to suspensions.
He will make AJ VERY uncomfortable. He will force a turnover, he will get a sack or two against Bama. He will get some timely tackles for loss. He will make a play that will drop your jaw.
Jarvis Jones will be the No 1 pick in the NFL DRAFT, he’s a gamechanging nightmare who has a knack for making HUGE plays when his team needs him the most.
The strip Jarvis made at the end of the Florida game, with everything on the line, ended the game, Florida’s guys were literally in TEARS after that play. Jarvis brought them to their knees.
Bama has given up over 20 sacks without facing UGA, Florida or SC. Get ready for some more.

Warmack is from Atlanta, Ga., and has developed into one of the nation’s top offensive linemen as a senior. He has started 38 games at the Capstone over the last three years. Warmack was a two-time SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week in 2012 and has missed only six assignments in 657 snaps (99.1 percent). He graded out at 90 percent or better in seven games and leads the team with 36 pancake blocks.

In case you don’t know, the AP is a poll that means absolutely nothing. The BCS rankings do not include that useless poll. You should know this since you are the all-knowing college football expert. I wonder if you ever went through the doors of any university. Actually, I doubt it.

I am proud of this young man, and I am surely glad he has represented the UGA nation so well while on this team. I wish he had one more year to go, and I guess he could if he wanted to do it, but really, he has nothing left to prove at this level. He will have a good career at eh next level and be rewarded for his effort and skills, and I am fine with that.
I hope the accolades keep pouring in for this young man the rest of the year, as he surely deserves them. He has been the quiet leader of the defense all year long, and the kind of young man, you want playing for your university.

IMO UGA wins the SEC Championship because of an exceptional JJ performance. Not since Hershall Walker has one player been so dominant on a UGA team. Without JJ, UGA would have likely lost Missouri and Florida games. SCe did a good job on JJ. As I recall, JJ was not at his peak performance because of injury and had problems “reading” the SCe offense.
You cannot play the game with one player. Team wise UGA must be inspired and response to JJ’s play.
Of course Al is aware of the JJ “factor”. And like Walker he leaves UGA with a year of eligibility left.

WHY, why would winning a NC have anything to do with if you can stay and discuss georgia, or have to be quite? I really don;pt get that kind of an attitude. Sounds like you are feeling a tad defensive, becasue you KNOW my comment was spot on.
My point was that Its a damn mystery why some Georgia fan would go out of thier way to completely make up something with ZERO basis in reality, for no other reason, NONE, than to rag on the head coach, several days before the big game. Can you explain the need to do that?

I just don’t get this idea that making negative comments is the default, TILL somebody make you eat your words and stop.
But hey, thats just me.
And please DON’T stop making them id they win, because they would be the EXACT same coaches eithere way. They you would only be too embarrased to express your same negative opinion of them would frankly make me respect you less, than if you just stuck to your guns.
Because I got news for you, they have ALREADY proven that they are in position to do so.That happened a long time ago, not this Saturday. You are ALREADY right or wrong. Winning really wouldn’t change a thing.

“I do appreciate (and I’m sure he does too) your “giving” coach Richt 1 loss before he incurs your wrath next year.”
For the record, I gave him 2 losses next year, but I will up the ante and say three losses. By that time I am sure I won’t be alone in criticism. I make negative comments because those are my opinions. Like a**holes, everyone has one and yours doesn’t smell any better than mine. Maybe I am still sore at CMR because during the time that my daughter attended UGA, three of the years STUNK. 2007 was the only good year. Then they went downhill. The other reason I am posting negative right now is in response to all the stupid “Where did all the Richt haters go?” I am not a fair-weather friend – my opinion hasn’t changed just because the TEAM has won a few games (most that they were epected to win). I haven’t seen evidence that Richt’s coaching has changed, so it can’t be the coaching that got better.
I wish the Georgia FOOTBALL TEAM the best of luck on Saturday. GO DAWGS!
