Chick-fil-A Bowl chairman says SEC loser returning to Atlanta ‘very unlikely’

As reported in the AJC earlier this week, the bowl scenarios for the SEC Championship game loser are very unclear at this point.

The winner will, of course, be in the Discover BCS Championship Game and Florida (11-1) appears slated for Nokia Sugar Bowl. That leaves the Capital One, Cotton, Outback and Chick-fil-A bowls to fight it ouot for the SEC loser. Selections will be announced on Sunday.

The SEC has an agreement with the Chick-fil-A to not let the title game loser fall past it in the selection process. Chick-fil-A Bowl chairman Leeman Bennett, in his weekly selection blog posted on Wednesday, listed as its five SEC favorites LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

But, he also wrote this caveat at the end: “The final thing to consider would be our role to protect the runner-up in the SEC Championship Game that could see either Georgia or Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Bowl this year. Again, not very likely, but something to consider.”

The key is what happens between the Capital One in Orlando and the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas. It appears both may want the Aggies and their Heisman Trophy favorite Johnny Manziel. The Capital One, in the SEC’s selection process, gets first dibs on any teams not included in the BCS. But you can be sure that the Cotton Bowl’s representatives are falling all over themselves to match Texas with Texas A&M. The two schools did not play for the first time in nearly 100 years this season since the Aggies bolted the Big 12 for the SEC.

If the Cotton happens to win that battle, then that would open up the Capital One for the SEC loser. Georgia played in the Outback last year and South Carolina played in the Capital One, making it unlikely (though not ruled out) that either one would return this year.

UGA by 10. They are peaking at just the right time. D is strong and the offense is clicking. Expect a monster game by Murray. Gurley goes for 100 and the Dogs go to Miami. I’m feeling it.

A weak Tech team ran the ball all day on the Georgia defense unless Bama turns it over six times like FLA. Georgia will get blowed out again. Murry is NOT Johnny Football and Bama does not have to worry about him running on broken play. The defense line can just rush the passer in the pocket. Put murry on his back a lot and Georgia fans will trash his house again.

I appreciate your efforts and can follow what you are trying to say for the most part but please proof read your entry before posting. Did you graduate from high school? If so you are clearly an example of how the public school system has failed its students.

What in the world does tech. rule in. Certainly not on the football field, where I believe, this is what the article is about, FOOTBALL.
The Orange Bowl has ruined it’s chance at legitimacy by having a tie in to the ACC, and it would be a true joke if FSU lost to tech. on Saturday and Tech. went to the Orange as a 7-6 team, and the representative of the ACC in the bowl game. I would think, Tech. would have more respect than to go there in the first place, given the fact that two teams, with sanctions problems has to step out of the way, for Tech. to even be considered for the championship game in the first place. To further humiliate your school, your athletic department is asking for a waiver, to even appear in a bowl game, when you most likely lost eh ACC championship in the first place. At least you shouldn’t have to wear heavy clothes, when you end up in El Paso this year, yet again.

@Dr. Basic: If you were smart enough to figure out the marketing behind the show, you would understand that Finebaum has those type callers for a reason. They Sell Airtime! It is no longer a “Statewide” or “Regional” show for a reason. He has his favorites like “Tammy”, “I-Man”, and “Jim from Crestwood” because they ARE outside the norm. He also has very knowledgeable callers from all over the U.S. Sure, those types play into the stereotypical Southern football fanatic, but he is on the air to make money. ESPN has him on regularly for a reason, he knows his college football.

In tribute to our beloved martyred Saint Jan Kemp, let’s all bow our heads for a few moments of silent prayer. Thirty years ago, this courageous young lady risked everything to expose the corruption and academic fraud instigated by Vince Dooley, sleazy practices that continue to this day under douchebag coach Mark Richt. Gone but never forgotten, Saint Jan lives on in our hearts and minds as a guiding inspiration and as a symbol of resistance to the pervasive evil and corruption that dwell in Athens.

And now, let us all pray for Saint Jan…

I can’t imagine alabama falling past the capital one bowl, after all them and oregon are the medias love children. UGA, on the other hand, is the media’s black sheep of the family. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them fall to the chickfila bowl.

Is it true that there is a new bowl this year sponsored by the Nike hat division and Peachtree Laundry Services? Since Auburn’s ‘mascot’ wears his hat backwards and waves a towel continuously, they have an automatic bid, right? And Cam’s daddy ‘promises’ (wink, wink) not to show up.

Clearly, the best thing is for Georgia to beat Bama Saturday…then Florida can play wherever they want and Alabama will, no doubt, get something better than we would. Although my bet is that the Peach Bowl doesn’t want Georgia anymore than we want to be there…not enough out-of-owners, restaurant meals and hotel rooms. By the way, I don’t use sponsor names for Bowls that started as something else, particularly when said sponsor insisted that the original name gets dropped…you don’t see that happening to the Orange, the Cotton, the Sugar, and certainly not the Rose…hell, even the Independence and Liberty bowls held onto their tradition despite having corporate/name sponsors. The only thing good about the CFA bowl is that it gives us something to throw on the field when the refs ’steal one’ from us – those little stuffed cows,,,don’t tell me they stopped handing those out…

Geez, doesn’t AMurray have enough pressure on him without the nightmares of having to face the Clowney kid again?

As much as clemson fans think of themselves as an “elite” program….you guys should have more ACC titles than you can fit in a trophy case. Instead, you rack up a bunch of wins against lower tier competition and get stomped when it’s time to play against real football teams. Talk about USC lack of SEC titles if that helps you, but if you were in the SEC you’d be happy to eek out the occasional. Your team is not even playing the same sport compared to what you’re up against in the SEC week in and week out. Don’t believe me? 70-33

GA pups are going to be exposed tomorrow night on national TV. Saban will send Notre Dame a message when his team completely dominates GA on both sides of the line of scrimmage. It may not be a huge number of points being scored, but prepare to see a dominating performance by Bama.

As I keep reminding everyone, Georgia has proven themselves to be national championship material. You will get to the promise land and beat both the Tide and N.D.
You will be National Champions! I for one am especially excited as I have already ordered and received 1,000 bumper stickers to sell in South Carolina. It will read “South Carolina 35 National Champions 7″ Please make it happen Georgia! We both will benefit.

Entrepreneur – that bumper sticker “South Carolina 35 National Champions 7″ is hardly an insult to the the team I think you want it to be against. What up with that? Maybe a more likely bumper sticker or t-shirt:

“Mike Slive helpful scheduling + GA = back-2-back SEC Championship Game appearances!”
