*Updates with quotes from Christian Robinson . . .*
ATHENS – Aaron Murray has gone silent.
Georgia’s record-setting quarterback has decided not to talk to the media this week as the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs’ prepare for Saturday’s monumental matchup against No. 2 Alabama in the SEC Championship game. According to Claude Felton, UGA’s director of sports communications, Murray “has requested that he be relieved of interview duties this week and Coach Richt has approved. . . . Apologies.”
Murray will apparently be available after this Saturday’s game.
Murray also bolted from the locker room after this past Saturday’s game. Traditionally Murray answers questions from the same stool in the southeast corner of Georgia’s locker room at Sanford Stadium after every home game.
“He told somebody he just wanted to hook up with his family,” coach Mark Richt said on Sunday. “I don’t know if his family was going to try to drive home after the game because it was not a late game or what. I think he wanted to get out and spend some time with his family before they took off.”
It has made for an interesting turn of events. Not only is Murray a fantastic player and leader on the field, but he also has served as a face and voice for the team for most of his three seasons as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback.
Murray is playing the best football of his career at the moment. This past Saturday he became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 3,000 yards passing in three consecutive seasons. He comes into the SEC game with 3,201 yards with 30 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, which gives him 9,399 yards, 89 and 29 for his career. Against Georgia Tech his past Saturday he was 14-of-17 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Since the fourth quarter of the Florida game, Murray has thrown for 14 TDs and no interceptions.
Of course, the knock on Murray has been how he has played in marquee games against elite defenses. He threw three interceptions in the first half against Florida on Oct. 27 and was 11-for-31 for 109 yards and an interception in the Bulldogs’ 35-7 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 6. Perhaps Murray didn’t want to be answering again all those questions about not playing well in big games.
Meanwhile, Alabama comes into Saturday’s game with a defense that is ranked No. 1 in the nation in total defense (233.67 ypg) and scoring defense (9.25 ppg), No. 2 in rush defense (77 ypg) and No. 3 in pass defense (156.67 ypg).
Obviously Murray wasn’t available to explain. But senior linebacker Christian Robinson, one of Murray’s roommates and best friends, defended Murray’s decision.
“I don’t think it has anything to do with the media,” said Robinson, one of three UGA student-athletes to participate in an SEC conference call Monday. “I don’t think he’s trying to send a message. I just think he’s so dedicated this week to being prepared. He wasn’t at the house (Sunday); he was here studying film all day. He’s just a great competitor, one of my great friends, and I know this one means so much to him. He works his tail off every day and people don’t see that. He just wants to be completely ready and not have any distractions. He’s just trying to prepare and I don’t think it’s bigger than that.”
So what do you think? Is it a good call Murray has decided to shut it down from a media standpoint this week? Or is he making a mistake from the standpoint of breaking from his normal routine and treating this game differently than he has all the rest?
Ultimately, the answer will come on Saturday.

Aren’t finals this week? Anyway, perhaps he would like to be able to concentrate on preparing for the game and not have to answer knuckle headed questions. I don’t see where it is such a big deal. So he wants some time for other things, let him alone to do what he wants.

Goldenrod – Your name is only half right because there is nothing Golden about you. Only a true troll could try to spin Saturday into something positive for Tech.
Aaron’s gotta do what he’s gotta do. Let’s hope that the second half of the UF game has cured whatever yips he had. Another thing that has happened in big games is we have dropped a lot of passes. Everytime we moved the ball against USC Bennett or another receiver would drop a first down or a big play. We really have nothing to lose. Play loose.

This game is arguably bigger than the National Championship. He is focusing up and getting his head right to roll the tide. Setting the example for the rest of the team. Sometimes you’ve gotta make a statement and that statement was made with your “helpless” player getting his head slammed. Also, if Miami didnt back out, tech wouldn’t even be in the run and Floria state just got hammered by a team with ZERO offense. The ACC is a joke. I’m done here.

@Mark Richt… Please don’t take the name of our venerable coach when you know know nothing about OUR team. Murray HAS graduated, but is enrolled in a doctoral program in Organizational Psychology so he still does have to go to class and take exams, so Knoxdawg was spot on in saying that he would rather concentrate on studying (both academic as well as football) rather than answer questions like “Can you win the big one?”. I think he has proven beyond doubt that he is a leader on this team and if you have ever heard him speak you would know what a well-spoken, intelligent individual he is and what a truly classy representative he is for the university.

I think AM wants this game more then any other he’s played to date. Rest of the team as well but w/AM, and all the baggage he’s been carrying around about cannot win against the elite D’s, this is his biggest test and he wants to go into this game w/o the added pressure of the media. Whatever he feels it takes to play better this w/e more power to him. There’s no doubt AL will be going all out to pressure him. That’s when he’s shown he’s not at his best. He’s his own worst enemy when he makes mistakes. He shook it off late in the FL game and regained his composure. He’ll for sure have to do the same vs AL. Its the biggest game of his life and will, if he wins, erase last years loss to LSU, and shed that damned label of not being able to win the big one. I hope the kid does great, win or lose, kit’ll be a team effort. GO DAWGS.

As long as the defense is hittin on all cylinders again we will be on top. Guys, don’t respond to the clueless and classless trolls. Murray’s dad is trying to win a battle with cancer, and he could be concentrating on him and football. You never know. Give the young man some space! It would be fine with me if the whole team went silent on the communications this week. IMO, Rambo needs to politely reiterate his respect for Alabama, and clarify by saying that he loves his team and believes they have a good chance of competing, despite some of the naysaying by the media. And then, let their playing do the talking on Saturday. Interviews *after* if we win.

Beanster, I agree with you. I would add that if they are able to bring a lot of pressure, similar to SC, I hope CMB will cut Aaron loose. Bama struggled with a running QB, and it affects the defensive play calling in a big way. Several times we had SC stopped and Shaw took off and moved the chains. It causes the D to think twice about bringing the kitchen sink, making the line’s job easier. Murray’s legs could be a key to this game. If the line can protect him well, that would be even better. Go Dawgs.

I think you’re right CHDawg but as much as I would like to see Aaron Murray play the role of “gamer” that we saw flashes of his 1st year in Athens, I doubt it happens. I am pretty sure that style has been coached out of him. The offense either executes its game plan or it doesn’t. There is a difference though in the way the D played against SC versus the way they are playing now. Maybe it won’t take an all-world performance from the offense to get the job done.

This will all come down to BOBO! If he game plans as he did against SC (i.e., no game plan for Clowney and Company), we’ll get spanked. If he plans to keep in enough people to give Murray time to throw, rolls him out, and lets him scramble. We have a 50/50 chance. McCarron is no where near the running threat of Bray or Shaw. Our D should be able to focus on head to head play with no gimmicks. It is up to BOBO!

Beanster, I think you are right about Murray being coached away from running, and that is why I said CMB needs to cut him loose. I understand the importance of not getting him hurt. But, Aaron is a very good runner with good instincts, and this is a once in his career opportunity. His only weakness is not avoiding hits–he wants to stick his nose in there and deliver a blow. He just can’t do that for the good of the team. He has to run really smart. However, I think three or four first downs out of Aaron’s legs and Kirby is going to start having flashbacks and layoff the pressure and dial in containment, which will help our line. We can certainly go with the our standard run/pass and see how we do. If our line can block Alabama, it will be a long afternoon for them. If they can’t, though, I hope we have some strategies for success!

AM will run the hurry up to try to take away from Bama’s depth but I just don’t see him resorting to scrambling. It’s not CMR’s style.

I have noticed the TEs, too. Both of those guys have extreme potential. Lynch has disappointed me with some drops, and Rome has made a couple of bone-headed, freshman mistakes. However, Rome has shown some brilliant ball skills, and he is quite a gifted athlete. I feel like he could become a superstar at any time–one great game. Lynch is a stud TE with very few weak areas, if any. He needs to catch it 100% of the time, and the other thing he needs to realize is how hard it is to bring him down and use that to his advantage. There is only one way for a little 210 lb back to tackle him solo–take out his legs. If he will cutback, slow down, do just about anything to deny chopping his legs in the open field, he will gain a lot more yards after his catches. Both of those guys, with a little bit improvement in weak areas, could be high draft picks when the time comes imo.

As humiliated as most all the ACC fans must all feel after this past Saturday’s assorted beat downs at the hands of four SEC teams, how much worse would it be if Tech upsets Florida State (which I think could happen) then goes to the Orange Bowl at 7-6 to play… wait for it,.. Kent State. The same Kent State team who lost to Kentucky (maybe the worst team in SEC history) by 33 points. Losing that game (and with their recent stellar bowl history, why not?) would be even more embarrassing that getting drilled by MTSU at home by three TD’s. It has almost gotten to the point where I no longer get any satisfaction making fun of Tech or their sad little conference. Almost.

I think it goes to show the focus of this team and its leadership. I think the loss to South Carolina was Aaron Murray’s Tebow moment after he lost and gave his great speech. I think this team has become very focused and he doesnt wanna talk, just prep and leave it all on the field. A lot of folks said they were gonna over look tech and it was clear that they did not. I am proud that this team is showing so much maturity.

I know what you mean. I came into work and got a very classy email from a Tech Fan I work with congratulating me on the win, and dialed his extension and the first thing he said was, “Okay man, let me have it, I’ve been waiting.” There was a sadness in his voice, and just didn’t have the heart. I just said, “hey didn’t call to pile on, just to say ‘thanks’ for the classy email.” It has gotten bad when it’s not even enjoyable to make fun of them. It’s almost socially unacceptable. Making fun of Tech is like making fun of someone who’s handicaped, or mentally challenged, you just shouldn’t do it. It’s not right.

Agree with GDawg. Having a family member fighting cancer is a huge, horrible thing. From what we know about Murray, he wants to be a great quarterback and a great son. As priorities go, he’s made the right choice. He wants to study film and be there for his family, plus he knows the media attention on this game is magnified significantly. I’m glad he’s freeing himself up to do what he needs to do, and it’s a drag that this has become a story. UGA should have covered for him better.

I’ve been pretty hard on Murray through the years for failing in big games. But the truth is that it’s the offensive line that has been breaking down in those games leading to excessive pressure on him. In the past 4-5 games he’s been great. That will continue against Alabama if the line holds out.

It will of course take a complete team effort to beat Bama but one key is AM legs IMO. Wish the coaches would turn him loose to run when we need to convert a critical 3 down play. Roll AM out and if the receiver is not open take off and pick it up. AM 2-3 years ago tucked and ran the ball much more before coaches had him shut it down due to the possibility of getting injured. Leave everything on the field this Saturday and let him run when needed. GO DAWGS!!l

I think it is great idea for him to sequester himself but there is an additional level that I would suggest to him. He needs to be done with his study by 3 PM Friday and just chill. He needs to take a sleeping pill and just relax and not squeeze the bar of soap too hard. No one faults his work ethic. He does his due diligence but there is point of diminishing returns. He needs to watch his highlights…reinforce the positive things he has done. Come Saturday morning he need to meditate on what he WILL do and not what he should do. He has the ability- he just needs to settle into it.

“Goldenrod, you are complete idiot. Rambo and Ogletree body slammed those chump tech players because of all the chop blocks UGA’s line was getting on account of that useless triple option you nerds run up in Atlanta. Sometimes you’ve gotta make a statement and that statement was made with your “helpless” player getting his head slammed. Also, if Miami didnt back out, tech wouldn’t even be in the run and Floria state just got hammered by a team with ZERO offense. The ACC is a joke. I’m done here.”
I can not conclude that he is complete but wrong. The cut blocks are not chop blocks. Chop blocks occur when one player engages high and another engages low. I believe the blocks he was referencing were cut blocks which start up and then go down. If you start low in space you have broken the rules. The body slams while uncalled for were legal to a point just not a very good idea. I remember seeing on one occasion the Tech player actually landed on him with him receiving the force of the blow. With that said, as a Tech fan I do not think we will win nor do I believe that UGA can defeat Alabama. I also do not think that either team thinks that they can win these games. Rambo would be much better off had he taken his lead from Murray. Good luck this weekend both teams from our state.

So what answer can I give? Of course I believe my team is as talented. The NFL scouts seem to think we are more talented, position by position.”
Rambo is a young man and he plays football. The answer above is the only answer that addresses everything and he would need a few more years to be experienced enough to think of that. He backed up his teammates and that is all he can be asked to do.

For someone who has always been accused of not being able to handle the pressure of a big game, Murray’s refusal to do interviews seems to be validation that he puts too much pressure on himself. His anxiety makes the situation seem bigger than it already is. It looks to me as though the game is bigger than he is, in his own eyes. UGA needs its QB to be a leader; front and center. Hiding behind the curtain just doesn’t cut it. I suppose this means he hasn’t been sold out in his focus and preparation in previous weeks. Maybe there is more to it. Maybe it’s the situation with his father, other family matters, etc. I just don’t buy the “just trying to prepare..”

You have more talent and a neutral field. If you come out and smash them in the mouth… Bama will have flashbacks of the enbarrassment A&M handed to them. It’s all a psyche game guys! Stanford didn’t buy the Oregon is unstoppable crap… and they STOPPED them. Bama is beatable and if you play with fire and take it to them the way you did to UF…YOU WILL WIN.

Aaron Murray is a graduate student and graduate students know how to concentrate. Right now Murray is concentrating on picking the Bama defense apart, just like LSU and Texas A & M did. Aaron Murray beat out Zach Mettenberger for the starter’s job and he ends up at Bama. He didn’t even look like he belonged quarterbacking in the SEC until he played Bama and their “D” made him suddenly look like the second coming of Eli Manning. Bama gave up 425 yards to LSU and looked clueless when they went up against “Johnny Football” and Texas A & M. Aaron Murray is the passing efficiency leader in the NCAA. He will similarly torch Bama’s defense. Go Dawgs.

Chip, I haven’t read every post but concerning the comment from Rambo, will you please describe it as you did on the radio this morning? Basically he was asked a “no win situation” question. I think you said he was asked specifically IF Georgia’s defense was better than BAMA’s. How was he suppose to respond? “No, we have inferior players”? He did go on to say that this was going to be a very difficult game. I don’t like bulletin board material either but he just was put on the spot and he responded with confidence, not cockyness IMO. In hindsight maybe he should have said something sarcastic like, “well, our defense doesn’t have to play their defense so what does it matter”? As for A.M. declining to speak to the media, I don’t see that it is a big deal nor should anyone try and make it a big deal. BAMA is the cream of the crop. They are the defending National Champs and I for one am glad we have the opportunity to play the best. In the end, no matter what the outcome, at least UGA is in the position to slay the giant. I can think of 6 other Eastern Conference teams that would love to be in the same position. The game will be settled on the field and if BAMA wins, I will be pulling for them to win the next one. People can root against and bad mouth UGA, Mark Richt and Bobo all they want but unless you are a UGA or BAMA fan one thing is for sure……….your team and your fans can sit at home or in a sports bar and envy both of these programs (this week) for having the opportunity to move on to Miami. It’s a great move avoiding the media.
All the media would do would be to:
a- hype the Bama defense “how can you prepare for the team that could beat any NFL team?”
b- why havn’t you played well in a game against a ranked team?
Truth is, Texas A & M Qb and LSU Qb lit the Bama defense up, you could argue UGA is better at every position on defense or offense, so they’re not as good as the media types mythology suggests. But you won’t hear that this week, the media is in love with Saban and Notre Dame.
Also, you could argue Murray played close to PERFECT in the first half in last year’s SEC Championship, so I don’t see anyone being able to say he doesn’t play well in big games, that was the biggest, and for 2 quarters, he outplayed the LSU defense. A bunch of drops, and 2 big punt returns flipped the game, but Murray came out guns blazing.
UGA has beaten UF TWICE now when Murray had 3 turnovers in one game and low accuracy, so that is clearly NOT the key to the game.
Murray played good enough to GET THE WIN against UF 2 times in a row, and just missed it in 2010, Urban Meyer needed overtime to beat Murray.
The key is whichever defense forces more turnovers, UGA forced 6 on UF this year and beat UF, a team that has beaten 4 top 12 teams. And Alabama lost the turnover battles against LSU & Texas A & M.
But don’t expect to hear that this week, it doesn’t fit people’s storylines.
Best thing for Murray to do is IGNORE IT ALL. fOCUS ON WHAT COUNTS.

Dear Media,
While we like reading about GEORGIA football we respect the privacy of people at the same time. We will have plenty of time to see Aaron Murray on Saturday, and I would rather him be fully prepared for the game on Saturday than to read answers to meaningless questions. I realize this is your job to write about these players so that people will read your articles & you will keep you employment, and that you don’t take kindly of them keeping quiet. GET OVER IT. If you don’t write another article we will be just fine by seeing results on SATURDAY.
Sincerely,
GEORGIA FOOTBALL FAN

I wish Rambo and Commings were following Murray’s lead and spending more time preparing for the game rather than running their mouths.
