Bowl options not great for SEC Championship game loser

Everybody knows where the winner of the SEC Championship game will play next — the Discover BCS National Championship game Jan. 7 in Miami, of course. But the bowl destination is less clear for the loser of Saturday’s SEC title game between Georgia and Alabama.

Because there are so many highly-ranked SEC teams, and because bowl dealings have been ongoing for quite some time, there is a very good chance the loser of the league championship game gets leap-frogged in the selection process.  In addition to No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia, four other SEC teams are in the top 10 of this week’s BCS standings — Florida (4), LSU (7), Texas A&M (9) and South Carolina (10).

Most projections have 11-1 Florida — whose only loss was to Georgia — moving ahead of the Alabama-Georgia loser in the final BCS standings and going to the Nokia Sugar Bowl, a BCS game. Conversely, some projections have a losing Alabama team going to the AT&T Cotton Bowl or a losing Georgia team going to the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

“For either one of these teams, it’s not really a great scenario,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

“You play your way into the (SEC) championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division, they’re the best team in their division,” Saban said. “They played their way into the game by a total body of work for the whole season. It doesn’t seem quite right. But it is what it is. I don’t really know what me commenting about it is going to do to change it. But I don’t feel good about it for our football team or their football team, either one.”

SEC spokesman Charles Bloom confirmed to the AJC Monday that “the loser of the SEC Championship Game has protection not to fall below the Chick-fil-A Bowl in the SEC selection order.”

That leaves as possibilities the Capital One Bowl (Orlando), Outback Bowl (Tampa), Cotton (Arlington, Tex.) and Chick-fil-A (Atlanta). Some projections have Texas A&M, led by expected Heisman Trophy finalist Johnny Manziel, heading to the Cap One, which has first pick of SEC teams after the BCS bowls.  Georgia played in the Outback just last year, and the Cotton prefers to take SEC Western Division teams.

Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan did not return several calls seeking comment Monday.

Georgia coach Mark Richt has not commented on the Bulldogs’ bowl scenarios. But as Saban emphasized more than once, “it is what it is.”

Florida coach Will Muschamp is disappointed his team won’t get a BCS title shot and offered no apologies for likely ending up ahead of the SEC Championship game loser and in the Sugar Bowl.

“Well, I can switch and go to Atlanta,” Muschamp told reporters in Gainesville, Fla., “if  (Saban) doesn’t want to go to Atlanta and play the Dogs. Be careful what you ask for, Nick.”

It should be noted, too, that last season Alabama went to — and won — the national championship game after failing to reach the SEC Championship game.

No offense to Chick Fil A, but the team deserves better than a Peach Bowl game against Clemson.

I have seen many bowl projections showing that if Ga loses to Alabama, they will play Michigan in the Cap One in Orlando. Where are these coming from???

If the dawgs don’t win sat. It really does not matter what bowl they go to. Sugar bowl is nice and fun to say you went but in the end it is no different than the peach outback or even liberty. They all mean the same thing which is you didn’t make to the bowl game that DOES matter and mean something.

…though both AL, UGA, and Clemson “seserve” better bowls than the Chick, what’s wrong with AL v Clemson or UGA v Clemson?

The only real drawback to UGA v Clemson is that they must play each other again at Clemson to begin NEXT years season…

And, Tampa Dawg......

…most of the experts have a 2 loss UGA team getting leapfrogged by all of the aforementioned SEC teams; and, a 2 loss AL team would command a much better position BEFORE those same SEC teams, even though TAM beat the Tide…

We open up against Clemson next year. Bit of a buzzkill.

More emphasis on winning Saturday. It’s going to be a tall order to top the Tide.

But like Ric Flair said, “to be the man, you gotta beat the man.” Right now, Alabama is the man.

GO DAWGS!

If BAMA loses to the DAWGS then whatever bowl is left is where they go…no excuses. But if BAMA wins then A.J. and some of the juniors that red shirted play for their third National Championship. They will then have a shot at four Championships next year. I think the SECCG is setting up to be the best in years. RTR

Its looking like the Orange Bowl versus Kent State or the Sun Bowl versus USC. Considering USC would be the best offense we have played this year and our defense has already checked out for the season, that might be an ugly game.

I have never and will never understand the total obsession Tech fans have with UGA. Their fans pull harder for whoever is playing the Bulldogs at the time than they do for their own teams. It’s bizarre.

Considering that there is a good chance that the SEC representative in the Sugar will face the mighty Golden Flashes from Kent St., I think Clemson in the Peach or Texas in the Cotton sounds pretty good.

I look at the last 3 years UGA QB Murray never has beat anybody in big games we as UGA fans better look some where other than BCS blow….our QB and our CMR can not beat the man so we can not be the man……. Alabama will stop the run…..they are the best at that……our QB will fall apart in 3 qt bama will be coming hard at the qb…….happy feet Murray will be running for his life…….CMR has GA dome fever……not the best place for UGA to play……we get our butts kick there and on national TV…….Bama 31 UGA 10 ………. it is what it is

If Kent State ends up in the Sugar I hope the SEC representative will beat them 8 touchdown and maybe that will end that stupid mess. I would rather all the schools get together and buy out Kent State out and match up a team who deserves to go to a BCS game. If Kent State go’s it will really cheapen the Sugar Bowl.

Only a certain number of SEC schools are allowed in the BCS no matter how much better the other SEC schools that don’t get a BCS bid. After the BCS picks it really doesn’t matter whether you go to the Capital One , Outback or Chic-Fil-A , they all pay great money for second tier Bowls. I would hate for Georgia to end up there because the are only 75 mile from that Bowl. This team would deserve a lot more.

IF Tech loses to FSU or WHEN? That will be as ugly as the UGA/GT game. Shocked as well to see GTBob on a UGA blog, again. Still no life. Sad. Over/under on the Sun Bowl attendance with Tech in it would be around 10,000.

Nick……the Gators will be happy to switch right now with you……an opportunity to play for the SEC title and the NC….over going to the Sugar Bowl….vs. the Chick Fil A. Yep…..I will take possibly going to the Chic Fil A if my team loses the SEC title game….over not playing that game and going to the Sugar any day…..as long as my team goes to the NC game if they win…..and that is the senario…Mr. Saban. I think Mr. Saban is thinking he might lose to the Dawgs. Not so confident are you, Nick? And I am sure you just have real warm and fuzzy feelings about Georgia not going to a BCS game if they lose. You really care about them Dawgs, don’t you Nick. Well…Nick…them Dawgs are probably going to send you to the Cotton Bowl this year……and Florida will probably send you back there next year. The East is back, Nick. Get used to it.

Gatrs to the Sugar?? What a joke. The loser of the SEC Championship should be going there – Alabama. The Gators were 2 seconds (literally) from being beaten at home by a directioanl school from LA. Too bad the computers can’t comprehend that….Pitiful !

If the SEC loser, Al or UGA, is not invited to the Sugar Bowl. The AD’s of that school should read the riot act to those guys and vow his team never to return under any conditions.
