UGA-Bama winner gets Notre Dame in Miami

One-half of the BCS Championship game is set. No. 1 Notre Dame punched its ticket for Miami with a 22-13 win over Southern Cal Saturday night in Los Angeles.

The other half of the big game will be settled between No. 3 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama in the SEC Championship this Saturday in the Georgia Dome (4 p.m., CBS). The Bulldogs (11-1) beat Georgia Tech 42-10 in Athens on Saturday afternoon and the Crimson Tide (11-1) shut out Auburn 49-10 in Tuscaloosa Saturday evening. The day’s results left little mystery with regard to the sometimes complicated “BCS formula.”

“You don’t need a computer for this one,” ABC sportscaster Brent Musberger said after the Fighting Irish clinched their spot. “Notre Dame will play Alabama or Georgia for the national championship.”

The Irish (12-0) won like they have much of the season, with a stingy defense making stops in the red zone — they made a goal-line stand in the final minutes — and the offense putting together a steady and balanced attack. Quarterback Everett Golson passed for 217 yards, Theo Riddick rushed for 146 and Heisman Trophy candidate Manti Te’o had a key second-half interception.

Notre Dame does not have to play  in a conference championship game. The Irish will now play for a national championship for the first time in 24 years. The BCS Championship game is Jan. 7 in Miami.

Dawgs or Bama will beat ND. We will beat Bama if we do not turn the ball over in our territory. Our offense is better than theirs and our defense is just as good if not a little better.

I hope none of our players get the flu from the Georgia Tech players that played sick tonight. I want Georgia to have every player available.
The # 1 issue will be will Murray play like he has since the second half of the Florida game. The loser of this game will end up in the Capital One or Outback. How fair is that when Notre Dame doesn’t have to play a top 5 team and win a Conference Championship.
I wish they would start the playoff next year so teams like Notre Dame can’t win just one post season game and win the Championship.

They all could beat Notre Dame. It doesn’t mean they would. Notre Dame has beaten some good teams this year. Pretending that they are a pushover just makes you look silly.

Chip,

The only stopping Georgia from winning it all is themselves. I know they know that. So they are focus and will beat Alabama. The smartest thing that could have happen to this team is being called “Soft” I haven’t seen the defensive swarm to the ball and hit and slam people to the ground since G.Blue, O. Thruman, T. Davis……. was hitting folks and knocking helmets off. CMR KEEP THE TEAM FOCUS AND MAY GOD BE WITH YOU AND THE TEAM…GOD TOLD ME this team will 13 games, last year God said 10. Sounds like a National C’ship is in store for our belove Dawgs.

So far it has been said by those in here: UGA only can beat themselves. God is on the dawgs side. UGA is better on both sides of the ball.

Y’all keep posting the reasons and maybe the Tide won’t show up ready to play the game like Tech.

This has been a great year for Georgia fans. It looked bleak after Spurrier rubbed your noses in the dirt, but you rose to the occasion , and finally got the Gator monkey off your backs. A word of caution here, Alabama’s not a monkey. They’re the five hundred pound gorilla waiting for you in the Georgia Dome. They have more championships than Uga has toes. I could hardly blame you if you ran away, but it’s a little bit too late for that isn’t it?

I don’t know if we will beat Bama, but we have a decent enough chance for me to be happy about it. I think we match up quite well, we’re playing very well recently, and we seem mentally and emotionally right.

It should be a great game.

I don’t think any fan from any ACC team should offer comments about anything. They should all be too ashamed to speak in public.

Go, Georgia.

The SECCG is going to be a good one. I have been to several and I think this will be the best. I would love to have a shot at ND, They cost BAMA several NC’s and me alot of pain in the 70’s. The DAWGS have made a great come back to make a good season. RTR

Learn lessons from last year’s LSU game:
1- Nothing cheap on special teams (2 big punt returns)
2- Win the turnover battle (too many turnovers in 2nd half, too few forced turnovers)
3- Execute plays when you have opportunities (too many drops in 1st half)
4- Play stout red zone defense
5- Don’t allow big mistakes to come in bunches, be resilient when things go wrong
6- Stay committed to running the ball and do it well enough

I am worried about Alabama but salivating over Notre Dame. Sorry, the Irish just don’t have SEC talent on the defensive line or at the corners. Either way, the SEC continues its domination.

Do any 1 of these to beat Bama:
1- Murray completes 75%+ of passes (this is one of Bama’s BIGGEST weaknesses pass defense)
2- Gurley/Marshall/Malcome rush for 200+ yards combined
3- UGA wins turnover battle (need to protect ball, and force turnovers)
4- Murray runs for 75+ yards
5- Defense holds Bama under 21 points

Do 1 of 5, and you win a close game.

Do 2 of the 5, and you win by 7 points.

Do 3 of the 5, and you win by 14 points.

Do 4 of the 5, and you win by 21 points.

Texas A & M was +3 in turnover margin.

Funniest thing listening to the FSU vs UF game was the announcer saying we could have a BCS CG with 2 SEC teams. Those fools really think the TV people would allow that to happen again we just stupid.

The COACHES poll will try to SPLIT the MNC vote.
BCS game in Miami winner will get the crystal football but one poll will vote OHIO ST and Champs too.

2 games that gave Bama trouble were when the opposing QB either completed 69%+ or averaged 8+ yards per attempt.

2 games that gave Bama trouble opposing teams rushed for 135+ yards.

If the above 5 all fail:
1- Get a special teams td or big return

You have to think like LSU did against UGA in 2011 if nothing’s going right.
1- Get a special teams big plays (LSU got 127 yards and a td on punt returns)
2- Overwhelmingly win the turnover battle (LSU went +3 in turnover margin)

The best part is after you lose to Bama, we go to the Sugar while you get stuck with the CapitalOne or Outback. When we win our bowl we will also finish ahead of you in the final BCS standings, proving we are still the superior and more respected program nationally. Go Gators!

Should be a great game next week. It is a shame the winner gets an incredibly over-rated Notre Dame team. The shame of it all is that Alabama, Georgia, Florida , LSU and even Texas A&M would route the Irish. THink Barkley would have made up the 9 points in last nights USC Notre Dame game

In Bama’s 2 worst games, LSU & Texas A & M, AJ got below a 140 passer rating.

Will Murray choke like he tends to do. Hopefully he will be chasing the coeds (as usual) instead of concentrating on the game. Someday UGA will recruit a quarterback with skills and integrity.

If we can control the defensive line of scrimmage we can generate enough offence to win the game.Should be a great defensive struggle. Team that scores 20pts. or more will win. JB,
Bama is missing 5 starters due to injury. UGA is playing as well as they have in years right now. It will be a tough game, no doubt, but if UGA takes care of the ball they should win.
Too bad USC couldn’t upset the Irish. Would have loved another shot at the Dawgs!

In the 10 years that I have lived here, I have consistantly been amazed at the overstated relevance of UGA football. Much like my beloved CUBS, every year will be the one that UGA wins a title; then reality hits home. This year will not be any different. Buffalo, Fla Atlantic, Ga Southern? Really? One National Championship in how many years? Good Luck next week, but I doubt it. I would welcome a rematch from 1981. Go IRISH!

OK, now focus on Bama and the SEC Championship. I truly believe we can beat Alabama and if we play as we have been since the second half of the UF game, we will. Of course the Alabama defense ain’t who we’ve been playing, but then the Florida D was on the field when we put that one away. Whatever happens we’ve got plenty to be proud of.
