UGA storylines: Stopping option (again), staying hot on offense and playing for it all

THREE STORYLINES

1. Can the Dogs stop the spread option (again)? Georgia did a pretty good job against Georgia Southern’s spread option last Saturday, limiting the Eagles to 14 points and 318 total yards. But while Georgia Tech runs the same offense, the Yellow Jackets run it on a whole different level. They’re averaging 47.6 points over the last three games and play behind an offensive line averaging just under 300 pounds. The Bulldogs rank fourth in the nation in three-and-outs with an average 5.4 per game. They’ll be hard-pressed to get half of that against these guys.

2. What about Georgia’s offense? The Bulldogs are on pace to establish school records for scoring (37.6 points per game at this point) and total offense (471.4 yards per game). That’s because they have quarterback Aaron Murray, who has the nation’s highest quarterback rating (173.4) and leads the FBS in pass efficiency, and a pair of freshman tailbacks in Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, who have combined for 1,695 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. Georgia’s offense is one of the most balanced in college football, the likes of which Tech hasn’t faced. If it comes down to having to out-score an opponent, the Bulldogs are built to do it.

3. Now what? A week ago we were talking about the unlikely scenarios that existed for Georgia to get a national title shot. But in the matter of a couple of hours last Saturday night, it all broke the Bulldogs’ way. Now UGA’s path to its first BCS championship is a simple one: Win the next two games. But with that comes considerable pressure. How the Bulldogs handle the battle between the ears is as important as the one between the sidelines.

A win for Georgia …

Would give the Bulldogs at least 11 wins in a season for the eighth time in school history and fourth time under coach Mark Richt

A win for Georgia Tech…

Would be No. 2 in the last 12 seasons against UGA but the second in five seasons under coach Paul Johnson

Matchup to watch

Georgia’s defensive line vs. Tech’s offensive line: For all the sleight of hand and deception that is involved in making the spread option work, it still comes down to blocking and tackling. The Bulldogs have worked overtime the past two weeks at handling cut blocks and holding their gaps. But the Jackets’ big line is capable of knocking down linemen off the ball and their backs need only a crease to turn that into an explosive play.

Nice read Chip. Afraid some Dawg fans are forgetting the “between the ears” stuff. Pressure makes athletes do strange things.

Hopefully Murray comes out with a bang tomorrow and takes care of business (and the ball).

Go Dawgs.

No way the players have overlooked Tech. But Joey is right, you still have to execute on the field. Can they handle the pressure? Tech’s offense is crazy enough to make players tighten up. We should be able to score a lot though. I’d go with the over.

Im tired of of hearing bout the “GURU” of the option (Johnson). No play sheet…BS! You dont need one. Option left…Option right…Option middle. oh yeah…Throw a jump ball. Thats it. All of us arm chair coaches can call the plays on that offense. DAWGS ROLL!!!

Here is my pre game pep talk to the team: “Playoffs begin today – if you want to be National Champions you have to beat Tech first. Offense execute and we will score points. Defense- hit anything that moves. Tackle the whole backfield and you won’t have to worry about who has the ball. That is all you need to know. So GATA!”

Our entire defense needs to operate with the mentality that they cannot be blocked. If they have that attitude than getting to the ball carrier will not be a problem. Big John Jenkins needs to shove the center back into the QB on every play. Just blow’em up. Jarvis needs to be the pitch man spy. I want to see Moobs Johnson so mad that he looks like he will explode.

I can hardly wait for the game tomorrow. At the same time, there is some anxiety associated with it because I’ve seen fairly bad Trade School teams wreck pretty good University seasons. I’m sure our coaches are well aware of the many issues involved in getting our team mentally ready as well as physically. Perhaps losing so badly to South Carolina and playing so badly against Kentucky have a silver lining for our team – we must show up, and execute, and not be excessively cocky, and not be distracted by rumors of potential greatness at this or any other level – perhaps we’ll see glimmers of that silver lining come about 12:30 or so on Saturday.

I’d love to see us beat Tech by about 500 points. Like everyone else, I hate Tech. Good, old fashioned, clean hate, and lots of it. I’d also love to see us beat the North Avenue Irregulars by half a point. Any kind of win over a bunch of bugs is a good win.

Whether Tech does or does not have a good team is largely immaterial. What matters is whether our team plays like the game is as important as it is, but not more important than it is. How important is it? I think we all know what it means. I think the team does. I think the coaches do. I think we, the fans, do.

Stomp the bugs.

I would think it would be easy for the cosaching staff to deliver the message….we win we get a shot at Bama for much more than SECC.We don’t beat tech we have failed to meet our capabilities…end of story. The coaching staff also has the responsibility to Coach to win,let the offense do it’s thing until it’s a given we have won this game. That means letting all weapons do their thing,if they will do this Tech will be done by the third qtr.Go DAWGS GATA!!!

All depends on which Aaron Murray shows up: the good Dr Jekyll who slices up the opposition with precision passes OR the evil Mr Hyde who kills his team with interceptions. One will lead us to the promised land, the other off a cliff!

Ill be at the dome next week and won’t be nervous. We won’t be favored and have nothing to lose – we can play with our ears pinned back and just let it rip. noon this sat has me very, very nervous. First 3 possessions on both side if the ball will tell us everything. 5 players who need a great game: 1. Alec Ogletree 2. Shawn Williams 3. John Jenkins 4. Aaron Murray 5. Marshall Morgan
If those 5 have a B+ or better game – we win by 3 touchdowns.
Forget the dome for a second. THIS is the biggest game in 30 years for uga.

Richt has had the team doing everything real early all week to get the kids ready for an early start. They all know how important this game is.
As in every game this year the Quarterback will be the key to everything. The only game that we lost Murray had less than a 40% completion rate. Murray has used more intelligence since the second half of the Florida game , than he has the last three year combined. Very few turnovers. Much improved leadership. I don’t see Tech able to make this close. Georgia 42- Tech 21.

And what was the final score? The only reason offenses so weird and off the wall gain so many yards is most colleges play a more conventional type of offense, designed to get a lot of their players a look at the next level by the scouts, and oh yeah, designed to win games and get decent recruits. With a few exceptions, Tech. hasn’t done either with even any consistency against UGA, and GSU has never beaten the DAWGS. Enjoy the game and then, watch the UGA offense put up 45 or so points against GT. They will not be playing some sorry ACC school tomorrow. They will be playing a very good team from a very good conference called the SEC.

If the focus is there then the execution should be as well. As long as the LB’s hit the gaps and the CB’s are in position for anything outside………..Georgia should be fine.
This is the LAST GAME for our seniors in Athens………4 years and 3 for some. Go out with a bang and finish what you started.
Its not a complicated task to know what youre gonna do out there………………other teams have stopped Techs running game.
Tackle evryone coming out of the backfield and protect those ends. Do your job and dont worry about the Safeties and CB’s theyll do theirs.
Paul Johnson is gonna have some tricks up his sleeves throughout the game and so keep that in the back of yourt minds as well.
Hit hard and no arm tackling or hugs be a man out there today and make them fear catching the ball and running the ball.
Georgias defense is the back bone of our team and its success. This is your day and dont let Tech take that away from you.
Our defense is as good as anybodys if it wants to be but youve got to go out and prove it. Florida, S Carolina, Alabama, and others want you to lose becuase they all feel youre soft with a weak schedule.
Even the commentators are biase on the TV when you play. Nobody respects Georgia even the pollsters are reluctant to give us a place in the polls when we win but when we lose they really drop us out.
Are you a #3 team or a top #25 team? You decide.

RMike…nice, cold, uncaring, ‘whatayameanwe’, analysis. Well I don’t buy into a ‘you decide’ mindset. We’re in this together. Tech’s players, coaches and fans’ motivation today is to make us feel bad…that’s about as personal as you can get. Sure, I want to disappoint them just as much as they do us, but there’s more here for us and if we won’t be beat, then guess what? I truly believe that ‘our’ team turned a corner during the second half of the UF game. Maybe when/if we run into a team that is strong enough to win the line-of-scrimmage battle, we’ll blink…but I don’t believe we’ll be stopped…at least not by this team.

In tribute to our beloved martyred Saint Jan Kemp, let’s all bow our heads for a few moments of silent prayer. Thirty years ago, this courageous young lady risked everything to expose the corruption and massive academic fraud instigated by Vince Dooley, sleazy practices that continue to this day under douchebag coach Mark Richt. Gone but never forgotten, Saint Jan lives on in our hearts and minds as a guiding inspiration and as a symbol of resistance to the pervasive evil and corruption that dwell in Athens.

And now, let us all pray for Saint Jan…

A Plea from a Young Boy

November 24th, 2012
10:51 am

(This letter was placed in my mailbox this morning by someone in an ol’ beat-up car passing by my house about 6:30. I guess they were hoping I’d maybe pass it along, so that’s what I’m doing in honor of this little boy who must of had some help in writing it.)

‘Dear Mr Georgies:
Y’all please have some mercy on my Yeller Jackets today. Please don’t run up your score too much. You so great and good. ‘and we all know you the real superior team and we ain’t got no prayer or beating y’all. It ain’t been a good year for my team or puppy dog, Mr. Georgies. i picked litle Liberty from Ms. Ledbetter;s liter last month. He was a cute tiny black and white beagle, and he had big pretty brown eyes. Only he wasn’t in no good health, Mr. Georgies, and died the other morning. He was too scragergly like my Tech team is. I miss him so much. Please, mister a’n ms. Georgies, don’t let your supertly trained profeesionala be pounding my Jacketts in the ground and scoring evertime you got the ball. And please oh please let us score once or twice anyhow, Mr.and MS Georgies. We ain’t got no money and Christmas is to be awful bleak this year. So if my Jackets could just score, it would mean so much to me. It’d of be like having a Christmas present under the tree. And Mr. Rictck, the Georgie’s golden coach, you’re such a good kind man. So please don’t mbarrest my Jacketts, okay? PLease don’t. They the only friend I got left since my sister run away from home last summer. Okay, Mr. Georgie’s, Okay? Oh, and Sirs, good luck beating the e’lePhants afgter you beat my Jackets. My daddy says you a shooe-in to be the nasional champions in football. But, first, please please, Mr. Georgies, have mercy won’t ya, on my Jackets today. Th.ank you, Sirs and Mams, and I hope you all stay warm.’
Nyname is Bud. And maybe I can pull for y’all when you ain’t playing my jackets okay?
