ATHENS – Kansas State coach Bill Snyder emerged from the Wildcats’ locker room after his No. 1-ranked team had just been dismantled by unranked Baylor 52-24 this past Saturday night and he fell on the proverbial sword.
In his postgame remarks, Snyder talked about not handling well his team’s situation. And by “situation” he wasn’t talking about blocking and tackling the Bears that night in Waco. He was talking about the Wildcats’ place among the BCS contenders and all that comes with it.
“I don’t think we handled the situation as well as we should have been able to,” Snyder told reporters after the game. “It had nothing to do with young guys wanting to be successful. They wanted to play well; they wanted to play hard; they wanted to win. We just couldn’t handle the environment as well as we could.”
Suffice it to say, Georgia coach Mark Richt doesn’t want to find himself in a similar situation following the Bulldogs’ game against Georgia Tech Saturday at Sanford Stadium. His No. 3-ranked Bulldogs (10-1) moved into the “environment” to which Snyder referred thanks to Kansas State’s loss and to the one also suffered by No. 2 Oregon at the hands of Stanford a short time later.
If Georgia can get by Tech this Saturday, it’s SEC Championship game matchup against No. 2 Alabama (10-1) on Dec. 1 will be a national championship semifinal. But the reality of this week is, the Yellow Jackets (6-5) — as champions of the ACC’s Coastal Division and Georgia’s most bitter rival — pose a much more formidable threat than the 4-5 Bears did to Kansas State.
So what is Richt doing to avoid a similar fate? Nothing, really.
Richt’s approach has been to not make SEC championships or BCS scenarios any part of the discussions he has with the team. He’s not forbidding players from talking about it or having ESPN’s SportsCenter blocked from the locker room television sets. But the Bulldogs are sticking hard and fast to their weekly routine.
“We meet every day and, kind of like we do every week, we talk about who we’re playing next, what kind of challenges they bring and what we need to do on a daily basis to get ready for it,” Richt said Tuesday. “That’s really all we do.”
How the players are handling the situation depends on the individual. For the most part, they seem to be embracing the moment and enjoying being part of the discussion.
“Every time you flip a channel, that’s all they’ve been talking about the last couple of days,” freshman tailback Todd Gurley said. “It’s kind of hard just to put it out of your mind when you’ve got fans tweeting you about that. But we’ve still got to finish off Tech. On Sunday, we can talk about (BCS implications).”
Said junior offensive lineman Kenarious Gates: “I love SportsCenter; it’s probably the only show I watch. I like to see what’s going on around the world and in different sports and how other teams are doing out there. When they’re talking about us and the BCS, I like to hear it. you just can’t let it get all into your head and stuff like that.”
That’s the key, the Bulldogs said, not getting caught up in the hype.
“There’s only so much you can do to avoid it because it’s everywhere,” sophomore linebacker Amarlo Herrera said. “You just can’t put all your feelings into it. And whatever they say shouldn’t ever be motivation. We should be motivated all year by the goals we set for ourselves.”
Amazingly, despite a 35-7 loss to South Carolina in Week 6, they are all still there for the taking. The biggest thing working in the Bulldogs’ favor is the fact that Saturday’s opponent is Georgia Tech. Georgia’s upperclassmen are making sure the underclassmen understand all the ramifications of that.
“If they were to beat us, it’d ruin everything we’re doing and they’d love that; that’d be perfect for them,” senior linebacker Christian Robinson said. “We want to beat Tech, that’s obvious. And we’re trying to help those younger guys who have never been in this atmosphere to realize the significance of it.”
Said senior flanker Tavarres King: “I told Todd Gurley (Monday), I said, ‘man, if you remember how bad we felt after losing to South Carolina this year, you’ll feel 10 times worse losing to these guys.’”
Richt likes the sound of that. In the meantime, he’s working pretty hard himself to avoid any BCS questions. And that goes beyond the half-dozen he tip-toed around during his weekly news conference on Tuesday.
“I had to hang up on my mom,” he quipped. “But, I mean, the staff’s not asking me. I get here about 8 in the morning and leave at about midnight,so there’s not many people I talk to outside people in the building. So we really don’t talk about.”
That’s all right. Everybody else is.

Most interesting thing that came from the KSU loss was listening to the head coach accepting “total” responsibility for not having his team prepared for the pressure, and the game. I would have had a lot more respect for CMR had he admitted the failures of the past were his responsibility. Also believe I heard Jimbo Fisher, and Nick Saban accepting responsibility. Not CMR….

Nah NCDawg, I watched a humble Bill Snyder accept total responsibility for “his” failure to prepare his team, as did Nick Saban. I watched Jimbo Fisher “apologize” to FSU fans. I don’t want to see Richt grovel, but, it would have made it much easier to support him had he acknowledged his failures to his football team and it’s fans. I admit I was frustrated after the SC loss and if UGA had lost to UF, then perhaps there would be room for criticism. But that didn’t happen. Not trying to be uppity (even with 2 wins in a row, I still I am very much aware of UGA’s recent record vs UF). Only responding to the “fluke win” and lack of “class or guts” comments that GAGator made.
It seems some Gator fans want to believe UGA had no part in creating y’alls 6 turnovers which we all know simply is not true. It wasn’t a pretty win. But it certainly was no fluke.

I was critical of Bobo’s play calling last year and Mark Richt’s game management and both Coordinator’s slow adjustment but never wanted Richt fired and then I read that Bobo was attending a lot of Schools on play calling and adjustments and Murray attended Gruden’s Quarterback camp . The coaching staff realized they were not getting the job done but because of the effort of the entire program to improve I even stopped wanting Bobo replaced as Coordinator. I still wanted him as Quarterback coach ,even if he lost his job as Coordinator.
But, Georgia has improved in just about everything this year as the year went on. The Offense was night and day better with our Freshmen running back’s gaining nearly 2000 yards and Murray cutting down on turnovers and the special teams are like a different crew on the field.
Sorry to you Mark Richt haters who were hoping that he would flop and get fired but in my opinion he deserves coach of the year for being willing to change and get better. I can’t criticize an 11-1 record , if we beat Tech and I am amazed any Georgia fan can continue to hate Richt so much that you just want him gone no matter if he has shown tremendous improvement in getting us to a Championship level
Look what a coaching change has done for Tennessee and Auburn. Richt deserves complete support with the improvements we have seen this year.

I think we’re all putting more hype into this than the players are. The Dawgs get up in the morning and listen to the phone messages telling them what they need to do or not do from family and friends.
Then they go have breakfast and on the way to the chow hall they pass students and friends telling them what to do or not do.
Then they sit down eating breakfast with other players and hear more opinions on how to be ready for Tech.
Then as their sitting at the table with other players all they hear is to be ready to play and yet again after breakfast they run into people saying the samething.
Once their at practice its all they hear.
Im sure they have heard this 50 times a day on the what -ifs and the what-nots til they get an ear full.
The Tech players hear about the same way but they hear about how they should beat us as well.
Trust me they already know everything we’re saying here and should be ready to play against Tech on saturday.

Let me make this perfectly clear. I think as the Head Coach at Georgia Mark Richt owes the players, institution, and fans a lot. He’s paid handsomely. My “one” and only real problem with Mark Richt is that “I” believe he went on vacation for approximately five years and let all three of the above down. I thought he should have been fired, period. He wasn’t, and it appears he’s moving in the right direction, but he used a lot of good will with a lot of us during that period.
As for me personally, I’m self employed and pay others salaries, I’m on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our company provides routine maintenance services for large customer facilities; any time we have any sort of problem my phone rings, regardless of the hour. I would be willing to bet that four to five years ago Mark Richt wasn’t working until midnight every night, and probably still doesn’t.
For the record, I don’t mind giving folks a “hand up” but I strongly disbelieve in “hand outs”:

The plain truth- The only architect of the situation you are referring to is the NCAA. This is about money not academics. I am not saying I agree or telling anyone what is right or what is wrong but the fact is this is about money.
The amount of money UGA generates from its athletics allows the rest of the university to make enormous strides within academics and research. While the gap in football between UGA and Georgia Tech continues to grow, the gap academically has slowly been closing. Each year there are many students rejected by Georgia only to be accepted by Tech. That is a fact. What does that say about the real difference in quality of most students today ? Look, Ga Tech is a GREAT school and I can’t think of one negative thing to say about the education students receive there, but if you are any indication of how deep tech folks look into things before forming an opinion then I may have to start changing my high opinion of the intelligence of Tech grads. Either you are just trolling or lazy…

Facts for this Saturday. Tech, over the last few games, has not shown much as being a top team in most phases of the game…..where as Georgia is playing it’s best ball of the season, has the #1 efficiency rated QB in the NCAA at 174. Has 6 or 7 future NFL’ers starting on D and as well a balanced offense in D1 ball. This should be over quick Saturday.

Never lose sight of the fact that, below the burdensome layers of boosting, administration, and staff, these are young men playing the game. They’e on a very large stage and under pressure that most of us could never imagine.
This is a young, inexperienced O-line. They had their rearends handed to them by USCe and they took their lumps, learned their lessons, and responded quite admirably from that point forward.
After playing in a fog for most of the year, one of the D’s leaders stood up and challenged his peers to find the fire, to step up and play to their ability. The D reponded quite admirably from that point forward.
Regardless of the final standings, when all the games are over, the season is history, and its remnants are being picked over by the endless stream of mind-numbing, droning, talking heads, this has been a special season for UGA. We’ve seen a tremendous growth and resilience at every level of this team.
No matter how it ends, 2012 is a great year to be a Dawg.

The next three games are the biggest of Richt’s career. Georgia has played well enough and gotten very fortunate to control their own destinty. Winning out means winning it all.
Dawgs dodged a bullet when the SEC expanded and going to Tuscaloosa was switched with playing Mizzou. I think UGA has a shot at beating Bama next week, but would not have done well in week 2 having to play at Tusc. OR and K State losing last week was huge and everything has fallen into place.
Can Georgia do it? We will see. All three games will be difficult (even the bowl game if UGA loses to tech and or Bama) we will play the caliber of teams we haven’t beaten much in recent years. The downside of this is that Georgia could still have a three loss season or even four if it loses to tech Saturday. What would these boards look like if Georgia finishes the season with 3 or 4 losses. I hope we don’t have to find out.
Georgia’s record against ranked teams the last five years has not exactly been stellar and two of the three games will be against highly ranked opponents unless UGA loses to tech and Bama, then the bowl game will be an easier matchup. Hopefully, the Dawgs can take care of business this Saturday.
This is an opportunity for Richt and staff to shut down the talk of UGA against ranked opponents. Beat tech, beat Bama and they would be a slight favorite over the Irish. The rest of this season will likely determine Richt’s legacy at UGA.
Win a national title and all of a sudden it is 3 SEC titles, 5 SECCG appearences, great winning percentage, 5 top 10 finishes etc…along with the big crystal trophy
Lose two of the next three games and it is more like: “Mark Richt, he almost got us there a couple of times.”

The Plain Truth:
I don’t believe many of the statistics you are spouting, but please answer this:
In the most recent recruiting class, Georgia signed 19 players. tech offered scholarships to 7 of them. Meaning of course, that if that high school athlete said “yes” to tech’s offer, they would be on the yellow jackets roster. In addition to those 7 three more of the 19 were offered by Duke, Wake Forest and Virignia (three well known football factories). So, more than half the class was offered by tech and or Duke.
Jordan Jenkins, Todd Gurely, and Keith Marshall were all offered by tech and all are playing/starting as true freshman at UGA and not at tech ONLY because they said “yes” to Georgia and “no” to tech.
How can there be such a disparity and UGA be a factory and tech be MIT when they are going after so many of the same kids? It doesn’t make sense does it?

When you consider the talent on this team – it makes you wonder what on earth happened at SC?
What other team has: 5 possible 1st round picks on defense? The caliber and depth of our WR corps? the caliber of our RBs? Our #1 Rated QB?
Even Richt has to know, with this schedule, and this talent on both sides of the ball, and the BCS situation, it’s now or never.

Just to add some historical perspective – The Dawgs, since 1980, own a 24-8 advantage over Tech. During that period Tech had a 3 game win streak in the late 90’s to make it more respectable. During that time Tech actually won a National title. Despite having the ability to field good teams on occasion, the Dawgs have owned Tech since 1960. That record is 37 -15. The series record is 62-39-5 in favor of The Red and Black. This is despite Ga Tech being a football power until the mid 50’s.
In contrast – the Auburn vs Alabama rivalry is only 41-34 in favor of Alabama, despite the Bear Bryant years.

Hopefully Richt solidifies his legacy with 3 huge wins, but it is possible that they could lose games too. tech has put some points on the board this season so this isn’t a sure win. UGA has not beat a team as good as BAMA in at least five years and the bowl game will be a challenge.
At this point all we have is an opportunity, but what an opportunity it is!

The Dawgs have won every game I expected them to win this year. They won one game – Florida – that I had predicted them to lose (just before the game) – thanks to six Fla turnovers and Jarvis Jones. I predict they will win easily this Saturday. I predict they will lose to Alabama (although I hope for an upset). I am not predicting the outcome of any Bowl we might be in. Our record in Bolws is not impressive.
All of this season is in spite of, and not because of, Richt’s coaching. I have not seen anything that I could ascribe to CMR – unless he was the one to recruit Jarvis Jones. He still plays Aaron Murray exclusively. Thank goodness AM is better this year. We STILL don’t have a special teams coach – I know, we don’t need one because we can win even if we don’t make point after kicks.

The best thing for UGA is for Murray to come back next year and make life miserable for ALL teams on UGA’s schedule!!!!!!!!!
Write it down. IF MURRAY COMES BACK NEXT YEAR UGA WILL DO EVEN BETTER THAN THEY HAVE THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the risk of messing in someone elses Wheaties NCDawg, that’s how this country got started. A bunch of disenfranchised, overtaxed, people with a dream. Anyone who thinks that the same thing could never happen again is just naive.

I agree with the poster at 2:53, Murray coming back would be a tremendous asset to the program next year. The offense should only get better, the defense will reload and be good to excellent again.

I just hate it when people say “write it down” or “mark it down”… it’s like using the word never. It always comes back to bite you.

have you seen the list of Seniors leaving the team? How many juniors will jump to the NFL? Have you seen you schedule for next year? This years Dwags playing next years schedule wouldn’t be 10-1 right now but you think Murray coming back is going to make UGa better? Stop Smoking the Crowell good stuff or was it some Brownies?

Nobody will ever see “Mature” and “Mobile Dog” in the same paragraph let alone the same sentence. I was just trying to let you know that your BULLSH _ _ is harming Dawg Nation because the players read these posts and they adore their coach as does the HUGE majority of Dawg Nation, many of whom are posters on this blog. !!!!!!!!!!
Check it out!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many have agreed with your DUMBA$$ 10:05 pm post and how many disagreed???? Apparently you are one of the Single Digit IQ posters and couldn’t find your a$$ with both hands in your hip pockets!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I am too but you are dead wrong about CMR and I love your mentally challenged a$$ anyway!!!

These young kids should be hungry next year on defense, there is no shortage of good atheletes. Success breeds success, and the incoming freshmen class will have some contribution. When the Dawgs realize what it takes to play championship football, they will. That’s why I’ve been so critical of the Leadership the last few years. Winning is as much an atmosphere, an environment, as it is personnel.

Let’s see if I can ascend to your level of intelligence for one second Brainiac, “if your brain were in a matchbox, it would roll around like a BB in a boxcar”. Let’s try another one, “you can’t remove with logic, what wasn’t put there with logic in the first place”. If all you’re going to do is insult me, our dialogue is over. Want to talk football, I can do that, believe it or not, I just won’t buy into the Mark Richt is the greatest, he allowed our program to sink because he wasn’t doing his job. He seems to be doing a better job, let’s “both” hope he continues it.
If you would like for me to school “you” on what “motivation” is, how it’s achieved, and how the environment we work in, play in, live in, influences our actions, i’m available for private tutoring.

After reading all your today’s posts I have to admit we have a hell of a lot in common(especially the “OBAMA” political post)!!!!!!!
I will retract most of the negatives directed at you but I can’t handle CMR being ridiculed when he is the 4th winningest active coach in the nation(ahead of all SEC coaches), has won two SEC Titles and six SEC East Titles in 12 years. He is of the highest character of mankind and if that is not enough I can come up with many more pages!!!!!!!!
I officially accept your suggestion to agree to disgree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve never been on the UGA blog before; it’s true, you guys are imbeciles! I was just curious. Go back to your lawn care classes! You might beat Tech with your ignorant athletes, but you’ll never beat Alabama. Their ignorant athletes are better than yours! Now I see why we make three times as much as you! You guys are truly ill-witted! Be at my house Monday morning to cut my grass!

There is hope Brainiac, if you correct the Dog thing. I’m not trying to ridicule the man, I admire what he stands for, but like you and I, he is human, and prone to error. If you can force yourself to type it out, just agree with me on one point, he got complacent and fell asleep at the wheel for two to three years, that’s all it takes for things to spin out of control, which I think they did. We really don’t disagree as much as you think.

You could have a point on his becoming “complacent” but in my opinion, his loyalty to his coaching friends(primarily Willie Martinez) almost put his butt in a sling moreso than complacency!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get ready for this Brainiac, it’s kind of a long story. I was living in hostile territory, Florida Gator Country, Tarpon Springs to be specific, we were surrounded by the reptiles, there was one other UGA guy close and we always had each others back.
One evening while having dinner I overheard an attractive woman dressing down a Florida Gator, with a distinctly “southern accent”. After she finished with him I walked over and offered to buy her a beer, which she accepted. Turns out she was an Auburn Grad, got her masters at Georgia State and we immediately became the best of friends with a common enemey.
Soon after we met my corporate career was ending, the company I worked for closed up shop in Tampa, offered me a job back in Atlanta, I turned it down, retired, and rode off in the sunset with the Auburn girl. We started our business here in Mobile and am loving life on the coast still.

Brainiac, I think some complacency, some loyalty, some questionable recruits, soft discipline, next thing you know the house came tumbling down. I think he’s rebuilding and sincerely hope he continues to work hard and keeps himself surrounded by quality people. The kids we have now are already making Bobo look better, I still think he needs to be a little more creative with his weapons.

IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE RIVALRY, THIS MATCH HAD REGIONAL AND SOCIO RAMIFICATIONS, GEORGIA CARRYING A LOT OF THE SOUTHERN COUNTRY BOYS, TECH WITH MORE BOYS FROM SOUTHERN AND NORTHERN URBAN AREAS, CLASSIC COUNTRY BOYS VS CITY BOYS. MOST OF THE ORIGINAL RIVALRIES REMAIN, BUT LARGELY SUPERIMPOSED ON TOP OF THAT IS THE UNSPOKEN EVOLUTION WHERE THE SOUTH GEOGIA BOY HAS BEEN LARGELY REPLACED BY THE SOUTHERN (SUBSAHARAN) AFRICAN PLAYER. TECH’S CITY BOYS HAVE BEEN AUGMENTED BY THE EASTERN AND NORTH AFRICAN BLACK PLAYERS. I’M NOT DENEGRATING ANY OF THESE PLAYERS , THEY ARE TALENTED AND FEARLESS AND GREAT FUN TO WATCH MOST OF THE TIME. BUT AS IN THE PAST, THE TRUE CONTEST REMAINS THE SAME AS ALWAYS, ONE BETWEEN BRAINS(TECH) AND BRAWN(UGA). THE PROBLEM FOR TECH IS, THE TEAM THAT’S 20% STRONGER THAN THE OTHER TEAM USUALLY OVERCOMES THE TEAM THAT’S 30% SMARTER. STING’EM IN THE RIGHT PLACE JACKETS.
