Oddsmakers have UGA as underdog vs. Bama, favorite vs. Notre Dame

Georgia would be an underdog against Alabama in the SEC Championship game but, if the Bulldogs pull an upset there, would be favored over Notre Dame in the national title game.

That’s the early word from oddsmakers.

Todd Fuhrman, former sports oddsmaker at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, said Monday that he projects Georgia as a 7-point underdog to Alabama in the Dec. 1 SEC title game. But if the Bulldogs beat Alabama in the Georgia Dome, they would be a 4-point favorite over Notre Dame in the Jan. 7 BCS title game in Miami, said Fuhrman, now senior market analyst for betting information services provider Don Best Sports.

RJ Bell, of sports betting news website pregame.com, sees it similarly. He projects Georgia as a 7-point underdog to Alabama but views the Bulldogs as 1-point favorite if they play Notre Dame.

All of this could be altered by what happens Saturday, of course.

Notre Dame, No. 1 in this week’s BCS standings, closes its regular season at USC and needs a win to secure a spot in the national title game. Alabama, BCS No. 2, plays Auburn and needs a win to clinch a berth against Georgia in the SEC title game. And BCS No. 3 Georgia plays Georgia Tech, which could knock its arch-rival out of the national-championship picture with an upset victory.

The top two teams in the final BCS standings, to be released Dec. 2, will reach the national-title game. Although there are no guarantees in a system driven by polls and computers, BCS analysts agree that if Alabama and Georgia win this week, then the winner of the SEC Championship game would rank in the top two.

If Alabama faces Notre Dame in the BCS title game, Fuhrman projects the Crimson Tide as an 11-point favorite over the Fighting Irish. Bell figures Alabama as a 10-point favorite over Notre Dame.

Notre Dame will get beat bad by Bama or UGA. Way to go Dawgs, after S.C. you did not pack it up for the year. Once again another great year for our Dawgs

Bob- you don’t really believe either of those statements you just made… do you?

Richt obviously does have a chance to win it all, that is common knowledge… and him leaving would likely not be a good thing for UGA. The chances of someone coming in and elevating the program is possible but unlikely. When a coach averages 10 wins in the SEC it is tougher to improve on that, although not impossible… Mush easier to step in and improve with a .500 team in the ACC…

ALABAMA only has 9 seniors on their team.It has been a job in its self for those seniors to keep all the underclassmen focused with the press constantly telling them how good they are.there will be no problem with them staying focused after the aTm game. And how good will BAMA’S team be next year

I think you guys are making some incorrect assumptions.

You think that winning a NC would:
1. Leave his with nothing left to accomplish. and
2. allow him to go be a minister.

In reality, striving for a NC is simply one of the goals he has for his players, and I doubt he sees that as the end all for him, one year. Other players will surely enroll next year.

And the big thing I believe you are missing is that it seems obvious that coaching college football IS already his ministry?

UGA and Bama have played 4 common opponents to date, 5 once Bama v Aub is in the books.

Here are the results:

FL Atl
Bama Score: 40-7
UGA Score 56-20

Ole Miss
Bama 33-14
UGA 37-10

Missouri
Bama 42-10
UGA 41-20

Tenn
Bama 44-13
UGA 51-44

Aub
Bama TBD
UGA 38-0

The only one with any real discrepancy is Tenn – which btw was the first game we had Alec Olgetree and Bacarri Rambo back for and the defensive timing was off, and players that filled in for them went back to their natural position. Not an excuse as much as a fact of the matter.

Another interesting item
Last week UGA beat Ga So. (8-2 #1 team in the Southern Conf.) 45-14
While Bama beat W.Carolina (1-9 last place #9 in the Southern Conf) 49-0
Ga So beat W.Carolna 45-13 btw.

The last 4 games UGA has outscored it’s opponents 137-33, Bama has outscored it’s last 4 132-53.

My point is, UGA and Bama aren’t as far apart as people try to make them out to be. Especially since the Kentucky game.

You can’t compare apples and oranges, meaning what one team does against another has little bearing on how two common opponents match up. Anyone that really thinks that Alabama will show up anything but prepared need only look back at the National Championship they won against LSU last year. You don’t mess with a wounded animal and come away unscathed very often.

Jville Dawg, I looked at that myself, but unfortunately all that means nothing. You only have to look at the UF, SC, and UGA games with each other to see that the common opponent thing tells us little.

Individual matchups will be the difference, OCs vs DCs, HC vs HCs, but especially the players. Look at how our Jones and SC’s Clowney can impact a game if their blocker can’t handle them. Almost win a game single-handedly.

Or wide-out X vs corner-back Y.

Matchups will tell the tale.

The Tide will show up prepared…I just wonder which team they’ll be prepared for. They’d better watch only the UF film from this year. Maybe the Auburn game. If they look at SC and prepare for that team they are in for a shock.
I don’t care if they are prepared or not… if the Dawgs come out fired up it will be war. Just like the UF game. A slobberknocker for the ages. Personally I think Florida’s defense is better than Bama’s. They play the pass better.

@BamaJoe: I feel sorry for you–because you have to live in Alabama.

We all understand why you Alabama folks fixate on all of those fictitious national title tallies (i.e. the Greengrocer Poll National Champion, the Playboy Centerfold National Champion, et al). Seriously, when you live in a state where the most cosmopolitan city is Birmingham, a state where running water is a relatively new innovation, where the Dreamland Barbeque is considered haute cuisine and where the closest thing to a professional sports team is the Auburn Football Team (at least the payroll is lower now that Cam is gone), what else is there to talk about?

So, have at it. Beat up on your little brother on the Plains this weekend, then hose off the pickup, grab your houndstooth hat and overalls, and head up to the Big City next weekend to see the Tide play the Dawgs. But you’d better strap your hats on. The Dawgs are not afraid of you–not one bit.

“Put in Timeout . . . ” posted Chip’s comment on Shultz’s blog–but changed “Tomas Broun” to “Thomas Brown,” so I had my hopes up. What “Put in Timeout . . .” did in changing Chip’s post is a bannable offense to me, but Schultz is more liberal with his blog policies.

As for the “real” Thomas Brown, he remains a liar and an arrogant, condescending jerk–transformation or not. He predicted “four or five losses in 2012″ for the gators virtually all season long–despite my opinions to the contrary. Now, since they’ve lost to the Dawgs, he acts like he’s been impressed with them all along. He’s a weasel who copies and pastes posts out of context to support his lies. He should be banned from all blogs–and I remain hopeful that eventually he will be.

UGA is a good team. Bama is a good team. UGA got smoked by USC. Carolina is a quality opponent, but it was beat by a large margin. Bama got smoked by A&M, but had a chance to win it at the end. (IE) did not quit when down by a large margin. Bama could have lost to LSU, but didn’t. You have to be competitive in big games to have a chance to win them. BAMA was 1-1 in those games. When is the last time UGA won a big game? Isn’t that why Richt was on the hot seat? Don’t give me the FLA game either.Florida is good but you should have beaten them. Same could be said for Bama against A&M. I hate to say it but FSU will expose Florida this weekend. In the end A&M and LSU will be ranked higher than Florida or South Carolina. Who would you rather play those 2 West teams or the 2 East teams? I rest my case. The WEST is still King till someone else proves it otherwise. Close game in the Dome: Bama 27-UGA 21.

This is getting good. Recent history tells us what we already know and Vegas knows. This will be a great game but Bama will pull it out. By the way, which is the only team of the SEC’s big 6 that has not won a BSC nat’l title? Or even a Bowl Coalition nat’l title. Its all about the Big Games: SEC title games, BSC nat’t title games. All UGA has to do is win one and this talk goes away….

Jamie, checking the past games to predict the future ones is a perilous path, especially when when the teams haven’t met for 4 years.

If I was a non-fan, betting man, and the line is as Chip thinks it will be, with Bama a 7 point favorite, I would take Bama. You just get what you get with Bama, every week. I just think they will be more prepared, and are pretty even top to bottom in talent, as well as (obviously), deeper.

But, UGA’s D is playing with a lot of confidence, and if Murray, who had a really good 2nd half vs UF, when the game was on the line, plays like he has since then, Bama could be in big trouble.

I believe it is true to say that right now, UGA can beat you with defense, or can get in a shootout and outscore any opponent.

We may very well have an opportunity to put the oft heard “I would be pleased with a good showing” to the test. I believe we all know however, that if we do not upset Alabama, and pull off the previously unthinkable trip to the NC game (and probably would have to win it as well) that nobody is going to give this team/coaches/players the credit they deserve for getting to this point.

It is true, Bama IS the better TEAM.

But, I think UGA’s starting 22 is at least as talented as Bama’s, in a few positions, better.
