Georgia would be an underdog against Alabama in the SEC Championship game but, if the Bulldogs pull an upset there, would be favored over Notre Dame in the national title game.
That’s the early word from oddsmakers.
Todd Fuhrman, former sports oddsmaker at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, said Monday that he projects Georgia as a 7-point underdog to Alabama in the Dec. 1 SEC title game. But if the Bulldogs beat Alabama in the Georgia Dome, they would be a 4-point favorite over Notre Dame in the Jan. 7 BCS title game in Miami, said Fuhrman, now senior market analyst for betting information services provider Don Best Sports.
RJ Bell, of sports betting news website pregame.com, sees it similarly. He projects Georgia as a 7-point underdog to Alabama but views the Bulldogs as 1-point favorite if they play Notre Dame.
All of this could be altered by what happens Saturday, of course.
Notre Dame, No. 1 in this week’s BCS standings, closes its regular season at USC and needs a win to secure a spot in the national title game. Alabama, BCS No. 2, plays Auburn and needs a win to clinch a berth against Georgia in the SEC title game. And BCS No. 3 Georgia plays Georgia Tech, which could knock its arch-rival out of the national-championship picture with an upset victory.
The top two teams in the final BCS standings, to be released Dec. 2, will reach the national-title game. Although there are no guarantees in a system driven by polls and computers, BCS analysts agree that if Alabama and Georgia win this week, then the winner of the SEC Championship game would rank in the top two.
If Alabama faces Notre Dame in the BCS title game, Fuhrman projects the Crimson Tide as an 11-point favorite over the Fighting Irish. Bell figures Alabama as a 10-point favorite over Notre Dame.

In the Richt era at Georgia he has never been this close or had a clear path to the BCSCG. We’re all interested to see how he responds and being our coach, we expect he will do well. He knows how to coach and he knows how to win big games. Consistency has been a problem but, make no mistake Richt will show up with guns ablazing and look for Bama to get ripped across the chops

Georgia easily could have hung 50+ on AU. It wasn’t needed and it wasn’t important. Good choice by the coaching staff. Honestly, I expect Saban will take the same approach as well so that is no good comparison.
Chizik, love him or hate him, has been a pretty good guy in the coaching circles. Opposing coaching (most of them) won’t rub salt in his wounds

BamaJoe,
Why do you feel sorry for Georgia? The game hasn’t been played and you don’t know who will win. WV was 28 pt favorites against Pitt a few yrs ago with a clear path to the BCS title game with a win and lost 13-9.
I’m not saying UGA will win since I don’t know but this could be a great game. First things first and that is beat GT.

This can’t be. It is a direct contrast to something GTBob posted earlier — that UGA has a chance against Bama but no way against ND.

I’m a GT fan first, but watching the Bull-Dogs win a championship would be sweet. Only problem is that I was born in Alabama, family still live there, but was raised in GA. I will root for GT to beat GA with a heavy heart, but if GA Bull Dogs pulls it out, I will root for them over the Tide. I hope my mom doesn’t read this. She may not let me in for Thanksgiving Dinner.

1. I think Alabama had their bad game of the year and although I hope they have another. I am not so sure we can beat them.
2. IF we were to beat Tech and Alabama, I am not sure it will be against Notre Dame. I am not sure they are good enough to beat USC.
3. I wouldn’t bet on Oregon winning out either.
4 GT Bob that is because Notre Dame would be about 3-8 if they played in the SEC. And if we do by some miracle get to play them, only a miracle would prevent UGA from wiping the field up with them. I think them and you would be a close game.
5. IF Notre Dame loses to USC and we win out, will Florida be the other team in the Championship? IF Murray hadn’t choked when we played Florida, UGA wins by 20. IF he doesn’t choke and we play them again, we will beat them by 20.
6. The odds makers should rank the teams. They don’t care if the team has a loss at the beginning or the end of the season. They look at teams like SC and don’t rank a team that isnt as good as them above them because they lost to Florida and LSU even if that team is undefeated or has only one loss. It is moronic that losing a game near the end of the season will get you ranked lower than a team that lost a game at the first of the season.

Notre Dame has beaten 3 teams in the top 20 of the BCS and 6 teams with winning records. Vandy hasn’t beaten a team in the BCS standings or a team with a winning record. How do you determine that they are equal?

The Dawgs beat the Gators in a big game. The question is whether they can beat Tech in a big game, Bama in a big game, and then win another big game against somebody else. I lean towards pessimism, but I’ll be cheering as hard as anybody else that they’ll find a way.

well, @William 1:08 am, yes, most would naturally and normally agree. The coaches will say the same sort of thing as well; however, they will also begin intensive behind the scenes planning, sort of preplanning now required by the sudden change. But, it is fine that you and all the fans only concentrate on Tech. The coaches will concentrate on preparing a game plan to practice and execute to beat the hell out of Tech….that is for sure….but the SEC Champ. game puts the additional, and desired, burden of preplanning for certain teams. If everything waited until Sunday am early, we would be a disorganized bunch; and that, we are not. Go Dogs, beat Hell out of Tech and anyone else standing in the way of an SEC and National Championship, and here’s to the proper planning required at this point of a championship worthy participant such as The University of Georgia Bulldogs. We have earned this position by being one hell of a good football team. To all three of our worthy opponents in this quest at hand, we wish you the best of good health and hope you are at full strength when we play you. We want to beat you at your best. We will beat you at your best. May all our players and participants be healthy, happy and at full bore as Georgia gonna take those Big ‘Ships back to our house this year. You’ve had your time and you probably will again, God Willing….But, ’scuse us as we beat you all and to all, a good night!

Hopeful but cautious. Mindfull of the fact that UGA has not been to the big “dance” since 1980. That’s a long time for a so called SEC Powerhouse team in a State with some of the best high school football talent in the country. It seems that when expectations are this high bad things happen for the dawgs. Examples are this year’s South Carolina game, the Al game (”blackout”)in Athens and the long “streak” against Florida.
In this year’s S.C. game, the team and coaches showed up for the game and reminded me of a bunch of drunks with a hangover. Later, Shawn williams had to call a teammate a loafer and soft to inspire and wake the sleeping giant. This team remains a mystery.
