The scores from Eugene, Ore., and Waco, Texas, reverberated loudly across this state, seemingly putting the Georgia Bulldogs two victories away from playing for college football’s national championship.
Saturday night’s losses by previously No. 1 Kansas State (to Baylor) and previously No. 2 Oregon (to Stanford) triggered a celebration among Georgia fans and a shakeup of the Bowl Championship Series pecking order. In the latest BCS standings, released Sunday night, Notre Dame moved to No. 1, Alabama to No. 2 and Georgia to No. 3.
That means, BCS analysts agreed, that if Georgia beats Georgia Tech and Alabama beats Auburn this week, then the winner of the Dec. 1 SEC Championship game between the Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide would play for the national title.
The top two teams in the final BCS standings, to be released Dec. 2, earn berths in the title game, which will be played Jan. 7 in Miami. Georgia has not played for a national championship in the BCS era and last won the title in the 1980 season.
The losses by Kansas State and Oregon came just one week after Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M seemingly left the SEC at serious risk of not putting a team in this season’s BCS title game. Last week, Alabama and Georgia were Nos. 4 and 5 in the standings, behind three undefeated teams. That meant the league with six consecutive national championships could get back to the title game only if two of the three unbeaten teams ahead of Alabama and Georgia lost a game.
And on one chaotic night, two of the three did just that.
“Thank you Baylor, thank you Stanford,” Georgia cornerback Sanders Commings reacted via Twitter.
“We control our own destiny,” UGA linebacker Christian Robinson tweeted.
The turn of events raised the stakes for Georgia’s regular-season finale against Georgia Tech. The rivals will play at noon Saturday in Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs (10-1, 7-1 SEC) would be knocked out of the national-title picture by a loss to the Yellow Jackets (6-5, 5-3 ACC).
On his weekly teleconference with reporters Sunday night, Georgia coach Mark Richt was asked a half-dozen questions about the BCS picture. Each time, he responded by talking about the game against Tech.
Richt wouldn’t even say whether he watched the Oregon-Stanford and/or Kansas State-Baylor games.
“You know what? I was thinking about Tech that night, all night, knowing what a big game it is,” he said.
Alabama is in a similar situation this week, also facing its in-state rival. But while Georgia has clinched the SEC East’s berth for the league title game at the Georgia Dome, Alabama (10-1, 6-1 SEC) must beat Auburn (3-8, 0-7) to represent the Western Divison there.
The SEC, of course, wasn’t the only beneficiary of Kansas State’s 52-24 loss to Baylor and Oregon’s 17-14 overtime loss to Stanford.
Notre Dame (11-0) moved from No. 3 to No. 1 in the BCS standings and can assure itself a spot in the national-title game by winning its regular-season finale at USC.
Brad Edwards, ESPN’s BCS analyst, expressed confidence after Saturday’s results that the SEC Championship game winner would get the other berth, provided Georgia beats Tech and Alabama beats Auburn. Fellow analysts Mark May, Lou Holtz and Kirk Herbstreit agreed.
Of course, there could be complications that again scramble the picture, such as a loss by Notre Dame, Alabama or Georgia this week.
If Notre Dame loses, there would be no unbeaten team left in the national-championship mix, and there surely would be an intense debate about who should play the SEC champion in Miami. In that case, another SEC team — Florida, which is No. 4 in this week’s standings — could be next in line if it wins its regular-season finale against Florida State.
Oregon is No. 5, Kansas State No. 6 and LSU No. 7 in this week’s standings.
The BCS standings include three components that count one-third each: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls. Notre Dame is No. 1 in all three components this week.
Georgia is No. 3 in the USA Today poll (up from No. 4 last week), No. 3 in the Harris poll (up from No. 5) and No. 6 in the computers (same as last week). Alabama is No. 2 in the USA Today and Harris polls and No. 3 in the computers.
The Associated Press poll, which is not part of the BCS formula, also has Notre Dame No. 1, Alabama No. 2 and Georgia No. 3 this week.

Alabama has one weapon and that is use that big line to run people over. In the SEC, its not what you’ve done over the course of the season and who you played on your schedule. But what you do week to week. Simply put, UGA has looked great on Defence LATELY and Alabama has looked beatable over the last 2 weeks. So don’t give me this Alabama is going to run over UGA. People are nervous when they make bold predictions about Alabama. They don’t intimidate anybody anymore. Its called MOMENTUM!! and UGA has that right now. Not who they played on their schedule.

A trend? Definitely not. Just random wins and loses, as usual. At the end of the day these are college kids playing a game. BAMA lost to Texas A&M, who lost to LSU and FL. LSU almost lost to Auburn, who hasn’t beat ANYONE in the Conference. But then LSU almost beats BAMA. UGA gets blown out by SC, but beats FL. A FL team who had beaten Texas A&M, LSU, and blown SC away. THERE IS NO TREND!!! Bottom Line – College Football is, and always will be, unpredictable. Oregon lost to Stanford, Kansas State got blown out by Baylor. UNPREDICTABLE. That’s why we play the games. All this will be settled in the Dome on Dec 1. At least UGA has a chance to play for a Chamionship.

Too good to join a conference so they half ass join the weak ACC in football. That’s OK though. If we beat Bama, we can beat any of those guys!

Amazing to me that a team that has played such a weak schedule could be playing in the BCS Championship Game. Only win of any substance has been over a highly overrated UF team. Didn’t play Alabama, LSU, or Texas A&M.Shows how weak the SEC is this year to have UGA 3rd and UF 4th in the BCS poll. Dawgs better be glad there is no playoff in place yet. There are half a dozen teams better than the dawns who are more deserving of a chance. But then again if they beat Bama maybe they deserve an opportunity to play another overrated team – Notre Dame. What a year for mediocrity at the top. If the dawgs don’t make it this year then its going to be a long wait.

That’s one more that Tech has beaten and they are on the verge of playing for the ACC title..Notre Dame is ranked number one and has only beaten one solid team(Oklahoma).Alabama is ranked number 2 and did not play any of the top three teams in from the east.Teams can only play who they are scheduled to play and the good ones dont lose to the likes of Middle Tennesee St. It’s not like Georgia is playng in the SEC championship game at 6-6.

Tech averages almost 40 points a game and they are a top 20 O, so this weekend will be a good test of an SEC defense. Georgia is roughly middle of the road at 6th in the SEC. If Bob’s theory is true that SEC defenses are overrated, then Tech should easily hang more than 40 on the weak Dawg D. Tech’s D should be able to stop any SEC offense because we don’t play offense in the SEC. Let’s mark this post. Bob could be right. They hung 45 on us a few years ago.

Since 2000 UGA is 10 and 2 against Tech. Overall UGA is 62-39-5 alltime.
Tech is the 3rd or 4th best team in the state of Georgia.
Don’t talk trash to a team who has a record of 10-1.
Vandy, MS State, Ole Miss, KY, TN, Arkansas, Texas A & M, SC, Missou, etc., etc. would all dominate EVERY Team from the Another Candy Conference. Fl State will get destroyed by FL next week and they are the best team in your conference. FL is only 1 win away from a MNC again this year. AL…GA…are only 2 wins away from the National Title Game. I don’t see the ACC vying for a National Title for years to come…

It doesn’t make you sound any better when you AGREE with all the stuff people say to you about GT. You can’t disagree with it, so you just agree, as you should, and then go on to jab at all things Georgia. Seems like with your superior education, you could remember your reading comprehension skills and figure out how big a loser you make yourself out to be. It’s just pathetic, and I hope you come to see this for yourself. Lots of people are educated, but many educated people don’t act like it. There only so much credit we should give people who have “book learning,” and for the record, I have three degrees, including a doctorate. All from different schools. None of them from Georgia. UGA matches up quite well with Bama. Alabama has a very fundamentally sound defense but no strong pash rushers (like USC east) and also their secondary can be attacked. UGA can exploit that if Murray is on and the receivers catch the ball this year. I’m not saying that UGA will win but it wouldn’t be a major upset of they did. Plus, Jarvis Jones can take over games. All I know is there are 14 SEC teams and Georgia is one of two that will play for the SEC Championship for 2012. You haters can hate all you want but those are real facts and whether they win or lose the SEC Championship Georgia was in a position at the end to control their destiny and not many teams can say that. If they beat Tech and Alabama, GEORGIA WILL GO TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.
I hope they can beat Tech and Alabama but if Georgia loses in the SEC Championship game they will still get to play in the Capital one or the Outback which would not be bad for a two lose season.
The key point is: It looked like there was enough support to keep an SEC team out of the National Championship game even though the SEC took up 5 of the top ten BCS rankings but with the upset’s yesterday either Georgia or Alabama will play in the BCS Championship and that is nearly guaranteed now.
So to all the SEC haters out there, get over it. WE ARE BACK. Now in order to unseat the SEC you will have to actually beat someone from that Conference. Which is the way it should be. Can’t wait until the playoff get’s here so this type mess want happen because of haters of the SEC Conference and ESPN is the leader of those haters.

The defense took a while to gel because of their idiotic off the field issues and what looked to be a lack of intensity. But it has looked completely different since Shawn Williams called them out. If they do win the next three games he is a big reason why. So yes they did struggle with UT and with Kentucky but this is a different team than earlier in the year. How many points did Ole Miss just hang on LSU?

If Georgia gets to the title game our defense will be licking its chops if Notre Dame makes it. There is no dominate team this year in college football and I think that’s a good thing for a change. If UGA gets to Miami they earned it. They would have beaten 2 top 5 teams in the same year. That’s just a fact.

The following is the most intelligent post ESPN’s Heather Dinich has ever posted:
Who programmed “overrated” into the computers this year? There’s no way Georgia and Florida are THAT much better than the ACC’s top two teams — if they even are better at all. Florida State has a chance to prove that this weekend, when the Noles host the rival Gators in the final game of the regular season. On second thought, Florida’s unwarranted ascension in the BCS standings might be the best thing to happen to FSU because if they win on Saturday, it will carry even more significance.
A shakeup in the standings was expected this weekend after Oregon and Kansas State both lost, but the rapid promotion of the SEC East comes as a surprise while the ACC maintained its status quo. Florida beat Jacksonville State. FSU won on the road to clinch the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Georgia overcame a slow start to beat Georgia Southern, not to be confused with Georgia Tech.
The SEC is rewarded for beating up on the little guys while the ACC is penalized for it.

GTBob… how can you even begin to call your pitiful commentary objective? You come of UGA blogs because the Tech blogs are dead and you need an outlet for your overwhelming sorrow at the state of Georgia Tech football. And being a total loser you make asinine jabs at your team’s most bitter rival. You can’t stand that The Georgia Bulldogs are a real football team and your pitiful Yellow Jackets are not. And just like the jealous geek in high school that can’t get a woman, even the ugliest cow to even look at him, you rail away at the stud that has everything you want.
Now I don’t pretend objectivity but here is a total LOGICAL analysis of the upcoming game this week. The garbage can scavengers (that is what yellow jackets are BTW) have a horrific defense and run a gimmick offense that preys on the simple fact that no one else runs anything like it and it is difficult to simulate in practice. The Bulldogs just played a team that runs the same offense and did a good job of shutting it down in the second half… after they got accustomed to it. Now… using logic… what does that tell you about what the bumbly bees will face this week? Hint: One major advantage for Tech is gone. The Bulldogs will be up to speed on handling Moobs Johnson’s gimmick offense.
Georgia will be the best offense Tech has faced all year. What does that mean? The Bumbly Bees horrid defense will be hemorrhaging yards and points like a freshly decapitated corpse. Their only hope is to win a shootout and that just went down the tubes because the only thing that allows them to score enough points to offset their lousy defense is the uniqueness of their offense. Georgia has more experience against that offense than any of their prior opponents AND more firepower than any of their previous opponents. The logical conclusion… win # 11 for Georgia.
Go whine about how over rated FSU is or something.

Florida is #2 in all the computer rankings except one they are 6th. The BCS drops your lowest computer ranking. If Alabama and Georgia win this weekend they will remain 2 and 3 in the BCS. So the SECCG would be the play in for one half of the title game. If Florida beats FSU it’s not going to hurt their computer rankings at all. So the human pollsters would have to give them a big drop after that, which I don’t see happening. Thus, if all the SEC teams in the top 4 win and ND loses its going to be SECCG winner vs Florida.

Florida would also gain a spot in the USA today poll because FSU is ahead of them. That’s too big of a whole fir Oregon to climb if Florida wins out. Their computer ranking is .800

But with a Nd loss to USC Florida would more than likely jump them. A Florida win would drop the Seminoles. The SeCCg loser would drop below Florida. The argument against Florida would be that they didn’t win their conference but unless Stanford loses this weekend neither will Oregon. Yeah they could GTBob but with their computer rankings where they are at it would have to be a big drop and they would have to put several 2 loss teams in front of them. And I just don’t see that happening especially considering they would have beaten LSU, USC, Texas A&m, and FSU (in that hypothetical).

Miss State tell me again who they beat? Their SEC schedule is remarkably similar to Vandys and they still at best can finish with the sabe SEC record or with one less win. Ms State lost to the West big three and Vandy to the East big three. But Vandy actually kept two of the three competitive, Ms State not so much…

Over confident and Overrated, that is the state of the UGA football program. Got HUMILIATED by the best team UGA played (SC), FL gave it to UGA, and you Dawg Dorks think you are a quality team. NOT. Ok, since UGA is sooo good, when AL destroys UGA is SECCG will UGA finally wake up and admit they lost to the best teams they played, and team and CMR have no fight and no heart (see 10-6-2012, 35-7). What a bunch of overrrated mouth breathers. UGA is 3 rd best team in East and #5 in SEC and BCS standing will reflect this fact by seasons end.

Simply put BEAT JACKETS 1st. You have got to find a way to get motivated to beat Ga. Tech because their motivation is to knock you off that ranking and spoil your season. Beating my Dawgs would give Tech the biggest upset in the history of its school.
They would never live it down for decades about that 2012 year and it could possibly save their coaches from being fired.
Plus you yourself would always hear about it and think about it the rest of your life. Its a haunting that would never go away.
Just think about how that would effect your season , your life and the SEC Championship. Youre the better team Dawgs and Tech is hoping for turnovers and momentum.
GET THE JOB DONE snd move on.
Focus on your assignments and dont worry about your offense or defense, take care of business and knock them out of the game early.
Stop the run and dont be baited into their trickery, options and soforth. Cover the ends and up the middle and youll be fine.
Play like its your last game youll ever play and hit them harder than they ever been hit before. No arm tackling, no penalties to give them new life. You got a warm up game with Ga. Southern and youve made corrections so go out and play like a #3 team is suppose to.

When you guys play as a unit , youre unstoppable. You defensive players need to talk amongst eachother before saturdays game to make sure everyones intact with their assignments.
Defense is where we win and lose games.
Dont worry about the offense cause Murray will find his own way. This game comes down to you because you cant give Tech 4 and 5 yard chunks going up n down the field.
Reflect back to the Florida game where you totally dominated that game and then youll see thats how good you can be.
I dont think any BCS team could have beat you that day. One game at a time Dawgs! Get ready to Rumble and give Tech a knockout punch in the 1st Quarter to indicate who you are and how they wished that they were not playing you on this day.
If you get ahead by 3 touchdowns then keep pouring it on and that way theyll never forget how you shalacked them infront of your home crowd.

My guess is that we have as much chance of winning over Alabam as Georgia Tech has of winning over us on Saturday.
Where are the CMR haters? Right here; I haven’t gone anywhere.
What evidence have you seen this season for improved coaching? Yes, I have seen a little more variety in offensive plays. Recruitment of Jarvis Jones was probably the biggest positive (who did that?). Aaron Murray hasn’t made too many mistakes. Luckily our place kicking didn’t lose us any games and has improved over the season. CMR STILL plays AM exclusively.
I have said all along that all I want to see is good football played by a good football team. We had one game where we were perceived as the underdogs and won it – Florida. But did we WIN over Florida or did they LOSE to us. Looked like a battle of the turnovers, and we had LESS mistakes than they did (again, Jarvis Jones was the big playmaker).
If we do well this year, the thanks should go to Jarvis Jones, but with CMR there, he will probably credit Aaron Murray.
My wife commented on Saturday that it isn’t any fun watching a game where the Dawgs are expected to massacre the other team, and they do.

So that’s how you get a top ranking? You schedule teams that are equivalent to middle school teams, you beat them then run around talking about how great you are? A rank of #3 is preposterous…UGA couldn’t beat Alabama if the Tide played the same 11 players on boths of the ball each series. They were lucky to have beaten Florida and Tennessee…those teams gave the game to UGA. Number 3, huh? I can’t stop laughing…hahahahahahaha. This will not end up pretty for UGA.

Who did UGA schedule out of conference?
Scheduled Penn St the year before that and the year before that one. And the year before that it was a 7th ranked VT.
LSU scheduled Oregon btw.
So let’s say over the last three years, what was UGA’s out of conference schedule and how did it work out for them? I kind of remember watching this game played in the dome “at home” against a team from the WAC that has the 70th or so best recruiting classes and they blasted Georgia and had them patting their helmets for substitutions by the 2nd quarter? Dogs, just play this game vs Tech! We have to play Tech the way we played FL! We have to play Tech as if there is no tomorrow, because if we lose to Tech, there really is no tomorrow. The D needs to play like the Tech 35 is the goal line. The O needs to play like they are 14 points behind! Step on their necks! GATA!
Beating Tech is never as satisfying as losing is awful! We always have more to lose than Tech does. It is always dangerous to play vs a team that has nothing to lose. Ga always comes out of the gate slow in these kinds of games. Always….. We showed signs of it vs Ole Miss and GA Southern. We almost lost to KY. This is the same team with the same players. We can lose to Tech if we don’t play with intensity. We need to play like we did vs FL. Forget about Bama. One week at a time. Everything is up to us now…….we have had all the help we need to get into this thing. The only thing that matters is beating Georgia Tech. Then we move on.
Everybody always argues about the rankings. Every year. Maybe UGA is over ranked. Maybe Florida is over ranked. Maybe ND is over ranked. Maybe Alabama, too. Regardless, the rankings are what they are, and we have to play the next team on the schedule.
Maybe we beat some cupcakes. Maybe our schedule is soft. Most any team could say that, or it could be said about them. So what? No team adjusts their schedule as the year goes on. Schedules are set far in advance, before anyone knows what teams will be good that year.
We are ranked highly. We are playing well. We seem to have a hot hand now. Things look to have come together this year for us. We’re in a good position.
If we beat Tech, and beat Alabama, and beat someone in a NC game, we will deserve to be where we are as much as anyone ever has.
However, the only thing that matters right now is beating Georgia Tech.

It isnt like Alabama has been dominating teams like in the past. They played 2 good teams in LSU and Texas A&M and 1-1. What gives Bama hope is that they play as a Unit. No superstars in their lineups just fundamental football.
Against a Pro-Style Offense Bama has issues. Not to take nothing away from Bama because their fundamentally sound with great coaching but they do have flaws. it will be up to Bobo after this weeks game against Tech to put together a package similar to Texas A&M game against Alabama inorder to expose those weaknesses.
They can be beat guys.
Our advantage is that no one gave the Dawgs any hope of going to the SEC Championship but hey here we are.
Georgias Defense is every bit as good as Alabamas Defense but the key is being ready to play like a Unit as they do. They are very well coached and this whole game will come down to Defense.
Alabama is not going to give us nothing and will make us work for every yard we get.
No trickery with those guys ,just straight up football.
Our front 7 will have to be agressive on the line and the secondary will have to watch for big passes but if we put pressure on their QB then they will dump to the RB coming out or over the middle dump pass.
We match up very well with Alabama unlike most people feel we dont , it just will come down to disciplined football , no arm tackling, hard hitting, and momentum.
Not thinking it will have to be your best game but fundamentals and silly penalties.

Tech is and will always be a Div 2-A football team. They have had a curse on them since they put their basketball team on the field to play a football game and continues to do so even today.
The Football Gods have spoken long before this day and Tech Fans cant stand it!
Their excuse is to use grammar language such as better grades, drunkeness, and trying to convince everyone they are great.
Proofs in the pudding.
Tech will never have 10 seasons of having won 10 games or more, Conference Championships, high Draft Picks, Finalist or mentions of a Heisman Candidate.
All they can do is talk jibberish crap of how good they hope to be when playing us. They should just focus on another sport and eliminate their football program all together to save face and money.
They should just look at the Kentucky program to come to reality that all their good at is basketball and anything else beyond that is hopeless.
Hope i helped all you naysayers with striped yellow backs so that you will stop drinking heavily, taking somas, getting obese from nervousness and seek other ventures that are more worthwhile to save you and your family shame.

It’s a different ball game when the bulls-eye is pointing at you!!
K-State completely collapsed & the Quack(much like Bama) got beat at home against a solid team.
Now comes the fun part.
For all the Quack fans ridiculing Bama getting in the big game last year, now they want the same exact thing this year. I guess it’s ok for every team except Bama to blame the FG kicker for a loss. It’s ok for everyone except Bama to get in without winning their conference(Fla & Ore).
This is 2007 all over again. The SEC couldn’t have wrapped it any better!!
It’s not the fault of Bama, UGA or Fla 2 of the top 3 teams last week gave it away!!
USC beats ND Saturday & it’s another all SEC BCS title game.

Bama has problems against pro style offenses? What planet do u live on sir? Tam is the only offense to have any success against us and they are a spread hurry up offense. We chew up and spit out pro style offenses left and right. Lsu runs pro style and has scored 26 points in 3 games against us. Uga runs the exact type of offense that we usually just destroy. You cannot run the ball on our D and Murray has a long history of failure against big time defenses.

A team like Notre Dame matches up good with Alabama or Georgia because they like to play run control Football or smash mouth football. The reason Alabama had such a hard time with Texas A&M was because of the spread attack on offense and mobile Quarterback from Texas A&M. Last year Alabama should have beaten L.S.U. the first time they played but missed 2 or 3 field goals but in the rematch was clearly the better team. If Oklahoma State had not blown it and lost they would have played Alabama instead of L.S.U. and given Alabama all they could handle, Oklahoma State may have even won the game because Alabama and for that matter
most SEC power teams do not match up good with mobile option Quarterback’s. That is why Florida dominated when Tebow was at Florida.

7567DAWG – You have hit the nail on the head about mobile quarterback matchups.
Example – Georgia vs. South Carolina. Georgia should match up pretty well against
A. J. McCarron, who is not that mobile. And A. J. can’t be sleeping well at night
thinking about Jarvis Jones (kinda like Murray and Clowney). Jarvis can go ahead
and cut the corner without having to worry about A. J. sliding outside him, like
SC’s quarterback did all night.

Good conversation on here for the most part. Bama has trouble with the spread (See Utah) but against A&M Bama made the adjustments just too late and that coupled with turnovers led to defeat. Now to the games at hand GT is not going to lay down for UGA neither is Auburn for Bama. Both teams need to take care of business. Throw the records out the window on these games. Nice bounce back for the Dogs they seem to be firing on all cylinders right now.

Murry is the key to the game against Bama……….he has had one qtr against a quality team…4th against Fla…..if Fla doesn’t turn the ball over 6 or 7 times we loose that ball game
Murry has to play ALL 4 QTRS against Bama for us to win………………………Murry scares the stuff out of me in really big games……….HE MUST STEP UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No Sam, I get nervous when we go 6-5! What a pleasure to see the Dawgs in this position! And what a privilege to be a fan of such a fine group of young men. You are as likely to see many of them tweeting Bible verses to each other as you are to see semi-literate haters posting rubbish here on the AJC blogs!

Sam, that queasy feeling in your stomach is from drinking too much of that UGA koolaid. Moderation is the key. And… UGA isn’t gonna beat Bama anyway, so you should feel better now.

Who has the puppies beaten? Florida with the worst offense in the Conference almost lost to Jacksonville State, Lafayette, La, gators will lose to FSU, the dogs opponents the last 4 games have a combine record of 13 wins.
Ala will give these overrated puppies a reality check, then they will lose to a good team in the bowl game and their lower standards fans will start talking about next year.

back to earth: since you didn’t delclare just WHO your team is (I’m presuming Alabammer), just WHO have they beaten? Florida almost lost to J’ville St? Last time I checked the score was 23-0, Florida.

Texas Dawg: good point about Murray. He scares the heck out of all of us. The game plan against the Bammers is pretty simple to me: pound the rock, keep their D off balance (and tire them out), and throw when they want to, rather than need to. Alabama’s secondary is suspect, to say the least. The key is the O-Line. They’ve got to open holes for Gurley & Marshall, and keep people out of Murray’s face.
