Jarvis Jones: ‘It’s week by week and we can’t get ahead of ourselves’

“It was a very good game. It was hard-fought. Georgia Southern has an outstanding football team. They run their offense well. They’re well-coached, even the little things like sprinting to the other side at the end of a quarter. They have a plan for everything, and they execute it well.”

Georgia coach Mark Richt on his impressions of the Eagles

“We were just shooting ourselves in the foot. We were driving the ball, but kept committing penalties or turning the ball over, which helped them stay in the game. We need to work this week to correct that and be sharper.”

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray on the Bulldogs’ slow start

“It just took us some time to get comfortable with what they were doing and what plays they were going to run. Once we got comfortable, I thought we played a pretty good game. It definitely will help [playing Georgia Southern the week before Georgia Tech], but we have to come back to practice this week and work. This was a good test, but we have some things to fix.”

Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree on defending the triple option.

“We just have to keep fighting. Having this game before Tech is good, but we have to get back to practice and focus on this week’s game plan, and then the week after focus on Atlanta. It’s week by week, and we can’t get ahead of ourselves.”

Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones on not looking ahead to SEC Championship game

“I don’t think it’s ever good to lose. People say you learn a lot from a loss, but I can usually find a lot more things to learn from after win. Hopefully it’s not going break our stride going into the playoffs. This game today, win or lose, had no bearing on the playoffs. We are the automatic bid into the playoffs, so we can go to bed tonight knowing that we are in.”

Georgia Southern coach Jeff Monken on heading into the FCS playoffs

“It was a big penalty, but those things happen when you run this type of offense. We tried to bounce back from it, but they’re a good team. They made a lot of good plays, and we couldn’t ever get back in the game.”

Southern quarterback Jerick McKinnon on the chop-block penalty that negated a first-and-goal run at the end of the first half.

“That was a 10-point swing, so it was big. It kind of crushed there momentum and gave it to us. I think after we got settled, in we looked pretty good.”

Georgia tailback Keith Marshall on Bulldogs scoring at end of first half

“It was exciting to get to play in Sanford Stadium. We were playing them tough for awhile, but in the second half, I feel like they caught on to us. We’re disappointed to lose, but we played a great team today, and we will take this as a lesson leading into the playoffs.”

Dawgs looked great in the second half today. I’m really depressed knowing there’s only one more game at Sanford Stadium. Being in Athens makes me so happy.

GSU played hard and has nothing to be ashamed of. I pull for those guys when they are not playing the DAWGS. Wife went there back in the 80’s and I had the privilige of meeting Erk while on a visit. So I pull for them and try to keep up with them. Still have family in Statesboro. Jarvis is correct that they must remain focused and not get ahead of themselves. Just saw #1 KSU loose big to Baylor and Stanford upset Oregon in OT. So, the door is wide open. Take care of business the next two weeks and we should play in Miami unless Herbstreit can come up with another excuse. Heard him and Musberger talking about what an embarrasment the SEC schedule was today. Yes, several teams played out of conference and played weaker teams. But if he checks the schedule (e.g. ND), he will find that all teams play a similar schedule. Just so happened the SEC teams all played out of conference on the same day. I have no respect for those guys; but sadly a great many people who will be making the ultimate decision for the BCSNC do.

Once again we see how asinine pollsters are by putting Kans State and Oregon so high. They are mediocre at best and so is Notre Dame … we may well see another two SEC teams in the NC.

Herbie is a candy a$$
He is already talking up Alabama…Georgia going to have to take it if they want it cause it damn sure will not be given to them.
These team were all media darlings….K State, Oregon, and ND will get theirs next week
Half the SEC would beat those teams.

I do agree. GSU came to play. And that Herbie fellow, was he named after a Volkswagen?

Now for GT. Believe it or not, I think they will be a little easier to beat than GSU. How bout this weekend of football. The proof’s in the pudding.

Yes I was at that Citrus bowl. Herbie prob still has nightmares of Randall Godfrey. Robert Smith puking on the field in warmups for what I guess was nerves. I don’t mind herbie so much. The person I can’t stand is Stewart Mandel of SI. He really takes a jab at the dawgs every chance he gets. UGA should never grant him a press credential. 2 more weeks dawgs, focus and be disciplined. Bama showed they be beaten. Glad to finally see B Smith on offens and returns; too much speed not to use.

Oh god… Here we go. A week of Tech nerds talking about how smart their players are. Gimme a break. I mean, really?

November 18th, 2012
8:35 am

Personally I don’t the Dawgs came out flat… they lost offensive focus for a little while but that was fater scoring on that first drive. The defense was a little tentative against the option in the first half but then they locked down. Moobs Johnson is going to be pretty upset that they had a game to get the option down. He’ll probably try to throw it more now.
I think Ga Southern vs Tech would be a great game. Southern’s defense is really scrappy. t would be a shootout I’m sure. The Dawgs need to remember that it is all for naught if they lose. They need to play Tech like it’s more than just another game. And then dredge up a UF like emotion for the SEC championship. Do that and a shot at the BCS title is ours.
I said yesterday that brainfart games are the norm in college football and sure enough Oregon hacks up a hairball and K-State just got ripped. They didn’t look flat either. They got whipped. A lesson for the Dawgs.
Orgegon’s almighty offense really looked pedestrian against Stanford. Stanford has a good defense… probably the first real defense Oregon has played this year and they stoned the Ducks. Even when it looked like Oregon was still going to eek it out, their defense let them down. Stanford should never have had a chance to send it to OT. They just took the game from Oregon.
I can’t wait for next Saturday! Stomp some Garbage Can Scavenger arse Dawgs!
It is a great day to be a Georgia Bulldog!

Also, Georgia has had ZERO off the field problems going back to before camp. Notice how Coach Richt kicked players off the team who were problems. I think the offseason problems are a thing of the past. Every school will have some issues, and we certainly had a bad stretch. This coaching staff is clearly not having it anymore, and I applaud them for tightening the screws. So how bout bringing up something relevant, like the fact that Tech has ZERO defense.

Tech has two things going for them this year. Their offensive line is the best they have had by far in the Johnson era. Also, their passing game is the best it has been even though they don’t have a star.

Their defense is terrible but they could get up for a rivalry game. Seeing the option full speed against GSU is a huge advantage for us. We pretty much shut it down in the second half except for the one drive.

Yes, our single elimination playoffs begin with a highly motivated team from the trade school, and we have to focus on beating them.

Wouldn’t it be fun to see the NATS get beat by the better option team in our state? I like Ga. Southern. A scrappy bunch. I hate Ga. Tech. Scrap the s from scrappy for that bunch.

In the playoffs, every game is equally important. Tech is as important as the National Title Game, should we get there, which we won’t if we forget to show up next weekend.

From here on we have destiny as a tailwind, but it’s an uphill race.

Go, Dogs!

Poor Barnaby, this is not the POPULAR MECHANIC section of the paper, nor is it the CRIME BLOTTER section. We are talking football and about or team. Since you do not have a Division 1 football team, maybe you should refrain from commenting. We are glad to hear about your proud fan base, but the main reason your AD left for Clemson, in a lateral pay move, was because he did not have guest port of the fan base and could not sell tickets. So how many of you are there that are so proud?

My suggestion to you is to stay within the correct section of the AJC, and maybe your comments will be more appropriate. If not, maybe you and the remaining 300 tech fans can just listen and learn. Life is not all about a slide rule and a pocket protector.

This Saturday I hope you can use some of your SAT score knowledge and be smart enough to sit, watch and learn a little something about the game of football, you certainly do not get it watching your brand down on North Avenue. And yes, there are plenty of us UGA grads who had high GPA’s, SAT scores and have become successful citizens.

We look forward to you attending the game on Saturday and our reception of you will be come in line with your attitude towards your hosts. Until then.

Fellow Dawg Fans: How bad would you feel with Tech upsetting us next Saturday? How about throttling back that mouth a little. They have absolutely nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain. What we need to hope for is that our Defense comes away injury free. You read what the D linemen said about Southern? It will be twice as bad against Tech. They will slice and dice the defensive line EVERY play. 95% we win. But don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

Stay focused and play one game at a time. Georgia Tech is a good football team and Georgia must play “lights out”. Best of luck to the DAWGS!

As far as some of the newscaster not respecting Georgia it stems from the South Carolina game and a certain bias . But that’s not what’s important, Georgia must prove it is a viable contender not only in the SEC but Nationally. They have the opportunity before them and the next two games will without a doubt determine how Georgia will be perceived nationally.

It time for Georgia to stay focus, respect the competition and play with one focus and that is to win ! Anything less will only add to the voice of those who dislike Georgia.

Georgia Southern has now become one of a few teams I respect and like outside of the Dawgs. I hope Georgia Southern wins out and play in the championship!

I would like to say to all the players and coaches, thanks for an outstanding season and I hope it continues. I want to thank all the 2013 recruits who have committed to Georgia and hopefully some of those that decommitted will re-commit?

Sorry to hear about Coach Dooley and wish him the very best in his coaching future. I would like to give a “shout out” to the team and coaches for spending time to pray for Lattimore(South Carolina) full recovery. I think that says a lot about the Georgia team and coaches!!

Best of luck Georgia and it’s good to see a team playing together and within the framework of Georgia’s desire to be fundamentally sound and aggressive. Keep it up!

Now, now Timeout, jealousy is an ugly animal and it’s hard to get off of your back!! Congratulations on beating Duke yesterday, but remember that they are an academic school! After your long history of academic abuse and scandals in your athletic dept. you guys need to come clean. After all 92 % of Tech’s football team are special admits, and your “M train” was created just for them. Further study revealed that Tech athletes have the lowest graduation rate of any team in the Western Hemisphere! But we still love our nerdy cousins and wish them success in all of their chess tournaments!!
