ATHENS – It wasn’t as easy as it may look on the scoreboard.

No. 5 Georgia beat Georgia Southern 45-14 at Sanford Stadium on Saturday. But for one half at least, the Eagles had the Bulldogs worried.

The teams had played to a tie at 7 through the first 23 minutes and the Bulldogs were clinging to a 10-7 lead inside the final two minutes of the first half with Georgia Southern threatening to score a go-ahead touchdown. But the last 90 seconds of the half changed the course of the game.

Georgia Southern’s Trevor McBurnett was called for a personal foul for a chop block on noseguard Kwame Geathers on a run that would have made it first-and-goal inside the 5. Instead, the penalty backed up the Eagles to the 22 and kicker Alex Hanks missed the 37-yard field goal attempt.

Aaron Murray made the Eagles pay. Though Georgia took over with only 1:03 on the clock and no timeouts, it would need only 59 seconds to score another touchdown. Murray hit Malcolm Mitchell with a 24-yard strike down the left sideline and the Bulldogs were able to take a 17-7 lead into the locker room.

“I thought that was by far the biggest turning point in the game,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “We ended up ahead by 10 instead of down by four. … It was a huge change of events.”

Georgia kept the pressure on after halftime. With the Eagles loading up to stone the running game, the Bulldogs simply placed their trust in the right arm of their record-setting junior quarterback. He threw touchdown passes on Georgia’s first three possessions of the second half and the Bulldogs were suddenly ahead 38-7.

“We knew were going to be in a one-minute situation regardless if they scored and we needed to go down the field and score before halftime,” said Murray, who left the game midway through the fourth quarter with 330 passing yards and four touchdowns on 18 of 28 attempts. “When we marched down there and and score that touchdown, I think we really grabbed the momentum.”

Go Dawgs, this game was a good tuneup fro next week. GaSo is a good team but UGA players and coaches played it near perfect. I just wonder where are all the bandwagon rats after the SC game are. I bet they have stowed away (as rats do) again and are singing the praises again.
Go Dawgs beat tech. One game at a time.

Here comes Tech, thank goodness a week off to rest before real football starts again…

Seriously guys- with Dec 1 looming, what do we have to do to have a shot against bama? I say, we really have to speed things up on offense and stick with it. A fast, no-huddle O where we keep them guessing and make some plays. Our D has to play tough, no doubt, but I think our offense is the key. Thoughts?

Curlyman you obviously didn’t watch the whole game. Good thing GA can pass they certainly couldn’t run the ball against Southern. Barely over 100 yards is embarrassing for GA. Bad call on the chop block stopped a score by southern and another bad call on a fumble by GA receiver clearly with possession. Ga threw the ball eventually well which we knew would happen. Ga Southern defense line and offense line played well.

All that crying by GA caused an incorrect call of a chop block.Refs were trigger happy to call one. Watch the replay. Ga Southern up 14-10 at the half. UGa won’t be so lucky against Tech. Also lucky Southern has no FG kicker this year.

GSU put 21 point son Bama last year.

But UGA held GSU to 14 points.

And having a balanced offense is where games like this come in to play.

You could tell they were selling out to stop the run, so ok, Murray throws for 4 td’s.

Pick your poision, UGA, the most balanced offense in the nation, wins AGAIN.

MIAMI, MIAMI, MIAMI.

MadDog that wasn’t a bad call – it was most definitely a chop block. You can’t engage one guy up high and then have another blocker hit him low. The film clearly shows it WAS a chop block. Now get over it!

UGA once again does not impress although it goes in the w column. Jarvis Jones lost alot of ground being a top linebacker draft pick today, he will remain the top pressure player coming out of college but is very limited on his ability to defend the run and pass.

We will get our chance against Alabama in two weeks. Finally gonna get an idea of whether this 2012 team is worthy of top 10 respect or not.

Game changer – did you actually read your post before you sent it? “Jarvis Jones lost alot of ground being a top linebacker draft pick today, he will remain the top pressure player coming out of college but is very limited on his ability to defend the run and pass.” Then I guess EVERY defensive player in the nation is very limited. Any clue how many NFL teams were watching us against Ga Southern? Not many, I’d wager. Second of all, there was like 16 yards of passing. Not much opportunity since they run the triple option – not something that is real popular in the NFL. Obviously you have not watched him AT ALL this season. This guy is a beast!!!!
