Channel 2 excited to bring UGA-Georgia Southern game to TV viewers

Say this for WSB Channel 2: The Atlanta television giant likes its Bulldogs

Not only did the station step up to broadcast Georgia’s 1:30 p.m.  game today against Georgia Southern — SEC guidelines allow members to produce one game per year outside the league’s contracts with CBS and ESPN — but it also will be providing UGA content throughout the day Saturday.

  • At 10 a.m., coverage begins with “Bulldogs Gameday,” WSB’s regular, weekly, hour-long program dedicated to the coverage of UGA athletics.
  • At 12:30 p.m., the station will air a special edition of “SportsZone,” which will provide pregame coverage up until the 1:30 p.m kickoff. The show will be anchored by Channel 2 sports director Zach Klein. He will be joined by Channel 2 Action News anchors Jovita Moore and Fred Blankenship, and former Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley will provide his insight and analysis
  • At 1:30 p.m., game coverage begins at 1:30 p.m.. Veteran sportscaster Bob Neal and former Georgia player DJ Jones will be in the booth and Klein will serve as sideline reporter.

“We are very proud of our station’s pledge to cover local sports here in our state,” said Tim McVay, Channel 2 vice president and general manager. “Channel 2 is the official home of University of Georgia sports and that is a badge of honor for us. To have a football game available for us to locally produce is a dream come true.”

All the coverage will be carried to households in a 53-county TV market that that encompasses metro Atlanta. The game will also be carried on both DirecTV and DISH.

“WSB has been a great partner over many years and this is another way that partnership has come to the forefront,” UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said. “We look forward to bringing this special game to our many fans in the WSB footprint around the state.”

Channel 2, WSB-TV is the No. 1-rated station in Atlanta. It is owned by Cox Media Group (CMG), which also owns and operates the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and AJC.com.

Thanks UGA and Greg McGarity for NOT putting this on pay-for-view and allowing the fans of both schools to enjoy this game. It is refreshing that you didn’t bend to the “screw the fans out of more money” mentality of the past.

Games from all over the country are available here in Savannah but Comcast isn’t carrying UGA vs GSU.
Expect to see a lot more dishes in south Georgia.

Thanks WSB but why Bob Neal? How does that guy still have a job? Talkin Football would be so much better off without him (bring back Schlabach!). At least his son (Craig) is somewhat knowledgeable but Bob should be put out to pasture — there has to be more announcer talent out there?!.

Really ticks me off that this market (out of Columbus, Georgia) will not see this game on TV. I guess the #5 ranked BCS team doesn’t rate coverage because their opponent is a small school, also from Georgia and the overall viewer base is so limited.

On the upside, it does appear that it will be available on ESPN3… which is better than nothing.

All Saints ……. It’s obvious you are not intellegent or you would realize that the Jan Kemp thing is old news like The North Ave. Trade School winning more than once against the Dawgs in a 10 year span. Next you will be writing old Bobby Dodd stories. You remember Dodd don’t you? The coach back in the 50’s that had some winning seasons. However he did loose his last regular season game to Dooley and ended up with a 9-1 season. Not sorry about that NATS loss they came in second again

All these media entities are there for money. If it had been on ppv, I would have not watched today. But UGA and GSU both have large fanbases in the the Atlanta market, so WSB can get a bigger market share than Memphis vs UAB.

I live in Elbert County. It’s 35 miles from here to Athens, but we can’t get the game without buying it on pay per view. The FCC, another of our govt’s wonderful services, places us in the Greenville, Spartanburg, Asheville market. No GA news, weather, sports, etc. It’s 125 miles to Asheville, and only 100 miles to Atlanta, but we’re in the Carolina region, according to the FCC, so we can’t get Chanel 2. We’ll chip in and pay the $26.00. HBTD!

In the Sav area on Dish its @649. Can’t believe all the crap games coming on instead if Dawgs/Eagles. We get to see Fla. Atlantic, but not an in-state school? Who’s brilliant idea was that? Almost $80 to get it on cable. Luckily, my mom has dish at her house. Looks like its time to visit mom…

Who is doing the LIVE BLOG?
Can’t wait to hear the WHINING about the blocking from the first play of the game.

I guess the UGa D players will cry when/if they go to the NFL about Cut Blocking.
When some of the past articles about UGa players and fight with their girlfriends I think the D players know how to use a Cut Block..

Mike Franklin,

Georgia Southern IS NOT a SMALL SCHOOL! They have 22,000 students, and a campus 50 acres bigger than UGA. Southern just voted to move to the FBS from the FBC in two years. This is not a little school.
