After Saturday upsets, Georgia can get national title shot by winning out

And just like that, Georgia controls its own destiny for a national title shot.

Same for Alabama. That’s the end result of Saturday’s BCS chaos.

How do you think Georgia will close out 2012 season.

No. 1 Kansas State (52-24 to Baylor) and No. 2 Oregon (17-14 in overtime to Stanford) went down in major upsets. That means No. 3 Notre Dame will move up to No. 1 in next week’s BCS standings and No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Georgia should slide up right behind at 2 and 3, respectively.

If the Bulldogs (10-1) and Crimson Tide (10-1) can get to the SEC Championship game unscathed — each must survive rival games against Georgia Tech and Auburn, respectively, next Saturday — it will turn the Dec. 1 Georgia Dome classic into a BCS championship semifinal. The winner advances to the title game, giving the SEC a shot at a seventh consecutive national championship.

ESPN college football analyst and BCS expert Brad Edwards predicted that Notre Dame, Alabama and Georgia would take over the top three spots when the new rankings come ouot at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Notre Dame has never been ranked No. 1 in the BCS era.

Georgia’s players were paying attention and took to Twitter to share their feelings.

Shortly after Stanford pulled off the second upset of the night, quarterback Aaron Murray sent out this tweet from his Twitter account, @aaronmurray11: “Yesssssssssssss!!!!!! The Murray household just went crazyyyyy!!!!!! #dawgsontop” Murray lives with teammates Dustin Royston, Artie Lynch, Ty Frix and Christian Robinson.

A short time later, All-American outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, aka @SacManJones_29, tweeted: “TURNT up.. Leggo BULLDAWG NATION!!”

Others:

  • “Thank you Baylor thank you Stanford.” — Cornerback Sanders Commings (@SandersCommings)
  • “I just did have a heart attack.” — Wide receiver Chris Conley (@CCon_TreUno)
  • “Let’s take care of business! Playoffs start now!” – Wide receiver Rhett McGowan (@KinG_WooT_17)

Georgia defeated Georgia Southern 45-14 Saturday to improve to 10-1 on the season. The Bulldogs have already secured the Eastern Division’s berth into the SEC Championship game. But first they have to get by archrival Georgia Tech (6-4), which visits Athens next Saturday for a noon kickoff.

National Championship Scenario – Georgia vs. Florida
No. 1 Notre Dame loses to USC.
No. 3 Georgia runs the table and defeats No. 2 Bama in SEC championship.
No. 4 Florida runs the table, defeating probably No. 5 or 6 Florida State.
Georgia moves up to No. 1 and Florida to No. 2.
Talk about a large outdoor cocktail party.

With recent history as our guide, it’s often the teams that lose last that suffer the stiffest penalty in the polls. That’s bad news for teams like Oregon and Kansas State, but perhaps good news for a team like Georgia, which is now more than six weeks removed from its one loss. The No. 4 Bulldogs could move up to No. 2, ahead of Alabama. One can only assume that Kansas State will drop from No. 2 to at least No. 5 after losing by 28 points to Baylor.

The last time Georgia had a true freshmen rush for 1,000 yards in a season they won a national championship over notre dame in 1980. This seems to be playing out a lot like 1980 to me.

Mark Richt – 11 seasons – 6 Appearances in the SEC Championship – Eight 10 win seasons- (the school has 20 in their existance). UGA struggled in the first half of the season due to dismissals and suspensions that our Coach actually enforces, and would be swept under the rug most anywhere else. He dismisses his all world RB recruit, he dismisses a top 10 QB recruit who is now leading a rival – he stands for pricinciples and acts accordingly- and then is blasted about not having discipline (??!!!), If UGA had similar policies as most of their conference -then yes, UGA would have been much better much quicker this season. And yes, under Richt’s watch, the team occasionly loses some games, some of them ugly. Yet he STILL is being questioned about his ability to lead the UGA program. (albeit a little bit quieter than normal right this minute)
And I guarantee if UGA does lose one of the next two games – these same spoiled, unrelaistic “fans” will again be out in force saying we have to get a new coach.
Fact – He’s not going anywhere, nor should he. If you truly are a Dawg – get behind our team and our coaches and man up – win or lose. RIcht and his staff are certainly among the top 10 or 12 staffs in the nation – and there simply is not a better MAN in the country to lead this program.
Screw the Haters. Go Dawgs!

Las Vegas says that Notre Dame would be an underdog against either of the the top 6 teams in the SEC on a neutral field..How can anybody pull for Notre Dame yet whine about Georgia’s schedule. For the Tech trolls the SEC has more teams in the BCS top ten than the ACC has in the entire poll.. 6 and 6 and playing for the ACC title,repulsive..Talking about a team with a weak schedule backing into a championship game.

Let’s say UGA wins out and gets the National title. I’m tellin’ ya’—’cause I have friends that are still jabbering for Richt to be fired—-it’s gonna be IMPOSSIBLE for an A.D. to dismiss a coach in the offseason that just won the BCS Championship. So, for now anyways….let the CMR detractors take a backseat; and let’s bask in the opportunity of what might be. Dawgs should consider this a playoff….each win a step to the trophy. Take care of business against Tech first though!

Here is a senario really to get under the tail of most Dawg fans in the following big upcoming games…..

USC beats Notre Dame
Florida beats FSU
Bama beats Georgia

Bama plays Florida for the National Championship…………

But, relax, Dawg fans…..

USC is not going to beat Notre Dame
Florida probably is not going to beat FSU
…..and Georgia will have a lot of difficulty beating Bama…..but of the three games….Georgia has the best chance of winning their big game.

But I would love to see this senario…..

USC beats Notre Dame
Florida beats FSU
Georgia beats Bama….
…..and Georgia plays Florida again for the National title…….
