After Saturday upsets, Georgia can get national title shot by winning out

And just like that, Georgia controls its own destiny for a national title shot.

Same for Alabama. That’s the end result of Saturday’s BCS chaos.

How do you think Georgia will close out 2012 season.

No. 1 Kansas State (52-24 to Baylor) and No. 2 Oregon (17-14 in overtime to Stanford) went down in major upsets. That means No. 3 Notre Dame will move up to No. 1 in next week’s BCS standings and No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Georgia should slide up right behind at 2 and 3, respectively.

If the Bulldogs (10-1) and Crimson Tide (10-1) can get to the SEC Championship game unscathed — each must survive rival games against Georgia Tech and Auburn, respectively, next Saturday — it will turn the Dec. 1 Georgia Dome classic into a BCS championship semifinal. The winner advances to the title game, giving the SEC a shot at a seventh consecutive national championship.

ESPN college football analyst and BCS expert Brad Edwards predicted that Notre Dame, Alabama and Georgia would take over the top three spots when the new rankings come ouot at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Notre Dame has never been ranked No. 1 in the BCS era.

Georgia’s players were paying attention and took to Twitter to share their feelings.

Shortly after Stanford pulled off the second upset of the night, quarterback Aaron Murray sent out this tweet from his Twitter account, @aaronmurray11: “Yesssssssssssss!!!!!! The Murray household just went crazyyyyy!!!!!! #dawgsontop” Murray lives with teammates Dustin Royston, Artie Lynch, Ty Frix and Christian Robinson.

A short time later, All-American outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, aka @SacManJones_29, tweeted: “TURNT up.. Leggo BULLDAWG NATION!!”

Others:

  • “Thank you Baylor thank you Stanford.” — Cornerback Sanders Commings (@SandersCommings)
  • “I just did have a heart attack.” — Wide receiver Chris Conley (@CCon_TreUno)
  • “Let’s take care of business! Playoffs start now!” – Wide receiver Rhett McGowan (@KinG_WooT_17)

Georgia defeated Georgia Southern 45-14 Saturday to improve to 10-1 on the season. The Bulldogs have already secured the Eastern Division’s berth into the SEC Championship game. But first they have to get by archrival Georgia Tech (6-4), which visits Athens next Saturday for a noon kickoff.

The Dome is to Georgia as the Gator Bowl is to Florida. Not much of an edge…but there nonetheless.

And I agree….I would have choked on a Kansas State / Oregon BCS.

Tell me now, all you sunshine and rainbow Bulldog “fans” – How do you feel now about a coaching staff that is not capable of getting the “Dawgs prepared to play South Carolina every year? What would our season look like if we were 11-0 now as we should be? At 11-1 (assuming we beat the Nerds), a loss in the SECCG means we are out of the hunt. However, at 12-0 (assuming we beat the Nerds), a win against AL automatically takes us to the big show, but we could still have shot if we lose as the Number 2 team in an all-SEC Title game like last year.

Every game is a must-win and if Richt feels otherwise, as he has expressed in the past, how do any of you think he will lead us to the promised land?

Go Dawgs and Lord, please help our boys to play well enough to overcome the inadequacies of the coaching staff you have seen fit to burden us with for the last 12 years.

Next time, I wish Herbstreit & Musberger would make their BIASED OPINIONS alittle more obvious, especially Herbstreit (Ohio St), who happens to be 0 & forever against the SEC! We have the BEST Conference in the Nation & they hate it! I say, Screw-em……Go DAWGS!!!!!

“Not so fast my friend”! Chip Towers says in this article that AL and GA “SHOULD” slide up right behind Notre Dame. Well, I can certainly see ND at #1, but can also see Oregon only dropping one slot to #3, since it was close and in overtime. Also can easily see Kansas St. dropping all the way to #5 since they lost so badly. Therefore that presents an interesting picture. 1. ND 2. AL 3. OR 4. GA 5. Kan.St. DO NOT be surprised but what this happens. Better wait a couple days until the re-arranging actually takes place.

I couldn’t believe Musberger saying that the SEC should play 9 conference games and thought the SEC should be ashamed of the opponents this week.

How many conference games does ND play? And do they have to gear up for a big conference Championship game?

NOBODY thinks Tech can muster a win in Athens next week… Automatically gives them a chance, especially considering how the coaching staff historically STRUGGLES to motivate for the big games…. Take care of business one game at a time, FOCUS on taking advantage of your strengths and your opponents’ weaknesses’………. THEN we can start talking about a rematch of the 1980 NC game vs. Notre Dame……….Alabama is NOT invincible BTW……… Go Dawgs!!

Oregon saw what happens when they play a good defense. They would be lucky to go 6-5 in the SEC.

I don’t see Notre Dame losing to the USC and the jerk Kiffin…..if we beat Tech and Bama it would be fun to play an undefeated Irish team that the media will be pulling for….UGA against the world.

As a loyal Tech grad, I would like nothing better than upsetting UGA’s plans for a NC game but it will not happen. Tech simply cannot handle the UGA offense. It pains me to say so but it is true.

Just as I predicted in the AJC earlier today “Double Upset Alert: Oregon & Kansas State will go down tonight”. Also I predicted that South Carolina would choke against LSU & Florida – that UGA would whip Florida and that Bummer would lose to Texas A&M. The one I got wrong was LSU over Bummer .. which Les Miles blew in the last 6 minutes by changing to a prevent defense. I would have been predicting that Notre Dame was going to lose to Southern Cal but I understand that Barkley injured his throwing arm today and won’t play next week. To bad because I would have loved to see two SEC teams be rated #1 & #2 again right before the SEC championship. I am going to wait for the injury report before predicting the winner of the SEC championship. Obviously Aubarn sux and Bummer should beat them by 4 TD’s. Like wise I see UGA over Tech by at least 3 TD’s. Tech is about 14 points better than Aubarn and will give UGA a decent game in to the 3rd quarter. What happens if the computers put a one loss Oregon team above UGA/Bummer – unlikely for sure but possible?

@Flo

Oregon’s issue now is stanford controls their destiny to get to the pac-10 championship game so one loss oregon could be left out there which really kills a team with voters if they can’t win their conference (for teams unlike ND who actually have a conference )

I’m going to punch every 3rd person who makes a Rudy reference between now and new years, I swear to god…

If it had not been except for a “home call” for the Irish on their field in OT against Stanford they would have lost. Lowly Pitt outplayed the Irish but poor coaching cost them at the end of OT. The BCS won’t be played with Notre Dame’s refs and Notre will lose to WHOEVER they play – either Bummer or UGA. Notre Dame wouldn’t score more than 10 points against Bummer or UGA. They have a decent defense but their offense is second rate. They are over rated.

You’re potentially right IrishFan …. 1.) Uga’s biggest test will be against Alabama, which they could very well lose, but 2.) they MOST CERTAINLY CAN beat an overated, over-hyped ND team, which hasn’t played anybody on their schedule that can match up defensively speed-for-speed with even a mid-level SEC team….. theory successfully contested!!

KEEP focus on next game, GT, a must win now. then hope Murray gets enuf protection to find his receivers, and the dawgs are able to run the ball some so the D can step up again and stop AL from running the rock. GA can whip Bama if they can stop the run. Then hope the [polls are kind and give GA a shot to play in <Miami vs whoever. Dawgs do control their own destiny.

You may be correct that Alabama may beat Georgia, but ND is very much overrated. There are about five SEC teams that could beat them. Let some of these teams that play one tough game a year come to the SEC and play against tough teams week after week.

If I remember correctly Richt is 3 – 4 against the Gnome…. so don’t tell me that Richt can’t win against Saban. UGA has taken some hits to their starting WR’s for sure with Bennett and Brown gone but they still have more skilled talent on offense than Bummer. As the case in most big games turnovers will decide who gets the “W”. The key to beating Bummer is stopping the run and giving UGA’s QB time to throw the ball. If the DAWG defense that beat Florida & Ole Miss shows up they can do it.

Two important points:
1) We will not necessarily leap Oregon. Their loss was very respectable.
2) If the Baylor game and the first 29 minutes of our game reminded us of anything, it is that anybody can beat anybody, particularly if one the less talented team has a deadly but unconventional offense.

Typical…can’t go out and get it ourselves gotta depend on someone else loosing. Last year it was USCe, this year too many to list. We had one of the easiest schedules in the SEC and we still had to wait for someone else to loose. When can we just go out and beat people? We get smoked by USCe and eerily think slipping in back door is so wonderful. PLEASE! GROW A PAIR!

With Bennett & Brown still in the lineup UGA would be a favorite in Vegas – without them UGA may still be a slight favorite.
